I just don't know how Marty does it.
I swear, every time I see him, complete strangers stop me and compliment my fabulous hair do! LOVE IT.
I went to see him yesterday and gave him a rough idea of what I wanted. What I love is that he takes my idea and gives it his own spin... and it always rocks. Feminine and pretty, but just edgy enough to keep it modern and interesting.
Marty's a hair genius and I love him to bits and pieces!

There's an episode of "Sex and the City," where Charlotte asks "is my hair too shiny today?" Ever since I bleached/fried my hair in an ill-thought out manner over the summer, I have longed for Park Avenue Princess shiny locks. My hair craved hydration like the deserts miss the rain. (Sorry, bad "Everything but the girl" reference... )
Enter Damian and Keratin Hair Treatment to the rescue! He waved his magic wand, and a mere 1.5 hours later, my once-frazzled, frizzy locks were straight again, glossy, and shiny. I love, love, love the look.
And I have a new gay boyfriend. Don't worry Rodney; you are in still in my heart. :)
Awesome, Fantastic, informative, enlightening....
I'm happy to announce that I have found a place that knows what itz doing with African hair types. Fritz and his staff are hair scientists and artists rolled into one. To top it off the salon staff is professional and courteous.
So happy I didn't go to Oakland...
To all my SF nubian queens, caramel courtesans, cleopatra's, grace jonez'z, and hot mamaz buy local and get your hair done at Hair Play where they do it right.
I will follow Tammy wherever she goes - I think it's been four years now? I travel a lot and get busy, so when I get to see her again to cut my hair razor-cut, it's like a dream relaxation session. I usually get a funky short-hair cut (which always comes out hot), but now I'm trying to grow my hair out, so it's in that weird middle phase. Tammy knew exactly what to do and, seriously, I almost want to keep it at the weird in-between length it's at right now - that's how much I love it.
And now she is at Hair Play - which I love. This place is great: spacious, great music, lively, good people working there, and there is an outdoor lounge for relaxing.
I can't wait until I have to get my hair sculpted again. Five stars.
My daughter has never been able to wear her hair down until now. No longer is it stiff and lacking movement. She has swing and we have smiles! I contacted Fritz regarding my 7 year old daughter's hair, and honestly I expected this salon to be one in my long list of attempts to find a place that truly understood and could work with my daughter's hair. She has mixed hair that consists of actually VERY fine individual strands, but are curled as tightly as brand new miniature telephone cords. She has always had issues with frizz and often very dry hair. I would spare no expense in trying to get her hair to have a look she could be happy with. I tried a multitude of products (purchased from salons and online) as well as stylists at various salons in the bay area, only to be continually disappointed. I contacted Fritz via email and advised him of the hair woes we had faced and he assured me he could work with me to find a style that would make her happy. She now officially loves her curls as much as I do. He very nicely did a deep conditioning treatment and style on our first consultation visit gratis, which impressed me. He wanted to see how we did working with it after that and with some new product - his product "SET". After a week of zero frizz, but still too much tightening in the back, we went for the texturizer. It is now PERFECT. She now has soft wonderful curls, that hang and swing. She now feels like she has real length to her hair and I've been asked by a dozen women already where she gets her hair done.
As a near final note, the product SET is a MUST for anyone with curly hair! I used it on my 3 year old daughter for her unruly curls (but yet much looser than her sister's) and with that product she has AMAZING CURLS. DO NOT SLEEP on this product! I have tried Deva Curl, Carol's Daughter, Curly Q's, Mixed Chicks, Ouidad, and a host of others, and HANDS DOWN this product cannot be beat. I have told literally EVERY curly head I know to either hit the shop or buy it online.
Lastly, just be aware Fritz does have a tendency to run behind, but in the grand scheme of things it's just not that big of a deal, so be patient.
Mmmm... it sometimes feels like they're resting on their laurels. The haircuts are inconsistent. Every other cut I've been happy. Now, I've been watching my hair grow out. I don't know if it's just the changing texture of my hair, or it's the cuts. But, I really feel like couple times the hair was cut shorter and in a shape that I don't like. For a couple years, I was on a roll here, but now... About a month ago, just about ten days after getting my hair cut here, I was having my hair blown out by another stylist and she asked if I had cut it myself because something wasn't right. Mmm... I go to one of their top stylists and it's pricey, so I hope it was just a mistake.

This is a review for KATRINA at Hair Play. I would follow this woman to the ends of the Earth if it meant she would perform her magic on my hair! She is AMAZING and fast and super good. I always get stopped by people asking "who does your hair?" I love telling them them about her. I've walked into Hairplay feeling like $1.50 and walked out feeling like the proverbial $1,000,000. She works Wed-Sat and will try to squeeze you in even if she's booked. Don't be surprised if apprentices come up to her during your appointment asking for confirmation or verification. She is the master and totally knowledgeable. Love love Love Katrina!
Got my hair did by Katrina. She is the best!
I have been a loyal Hairplay customer for about 12 years now, and it shows! Random passersby often compliment my expertly styled haircuts, and my hair is happier than it ever was before I entrusted my locks to Fritz (with occasional help by April and Damien).
Fritz always recommends amazing products that leave my hair feeling moist and scrumptious! I especially like Set (his styling product) and Clear Moisture (his most recent shampoo recommendation).
As for customer service, I've experienced consistently high marks. Case in point: a recent shampoo that Fritz recommended left my hair feeling a little dry after my 1st use. I called the salon and they said I could bring it in and chat to Fritz about it and get a different recommendation. Fritz took back the slightly used bottle, recommended Clear Moisture (YAY!) and refunded me the difference. Service with a smile!
Fritz is a genius! And I love every Hairplay experience I've had for 12 years running! Sending love, love, love and 5 shiny stars to Hairplay!
GO to Hair Play, and see Traci Tucker!
Once you go to Traci, you will never want anyone else to do your hair!! She is absolutely wonderful. I have never been more happy with a haircut. She really knows how to work with the shape of your face and make you look your best.
My hair is very wavy, not curly, but wavy. It can be really annoying but if it is done RIGHT it can be very sassy! ;0) She know how to do it right, I you don't need a genius to tell you that happiness is a great haircut! I don't even have to do anything to it. Its awesome!!
I recommended her to my best friend and her hair has never looked better either!! She has very long hair, but is a very small person. I don't know how Traci did it, but her hair FITS her now. It totally changed her overall appearance. She's hot regardless, but now its like, BAM!! Absolutely stunning.
Go to Traci and find out what a difference a haircut can make. She ROCKS!!
Too rich for my blood... $250+ for highlights and a slight cut is a bit ridiculous... While my hair does look amazing I just don't really think hair should have this price tag. My own fault... I knew what I was walking into and splurged.... However if you have extra cash flow to drop on this place... seek out Matthew... his no BS approach pretty much rocked... and I would so go see him again if the price didn't mean I would have to shake a tail feather at the neighborhood club for dolla' dolla' bills ya'll...
Paul has left Hairplay and now I am in love with Peggy! She does a great job, takes her time and listens to you, and is fun, but not overly chatty.

Have been constantly impressed with the service at the salon. It is refreshing when a stylist tells it like it is and helps you avoid bad hair mistakes( color and or cut) at the expense of their own profit. I went through many different salons in SF before I found this place and though I am no longer in the city and have numerous options closer to my house I'm sticking with what I have found to be the best salon in the area. My hair was over processed and dry when I became a Hair Play client a few years ago and I am am happy to say that is behind me now. I have the hair I had at 16 ( healthy, full, and glowing).
Damian, my stylist, does not push me to buy products, he gives me honest answers when I ask if - insert style- will look good on me and he is professional, ON TIME and does great hair. I always get compliments when I leave the salon. My only regret is that I did not find him sooner
I just went to see Marty yesterday and I feel so beauitful with my new cut and color. I have been going to him for the past four years because he is a genius. I have very thick, long curly hair and he is the only person I have come across that can cut my hair beautifully! I get compliments all the time and I had to resort to keeping his business cards in my purse! He is also an amazing colorist so it is a package deal!
FYI as of May 1st, Marty is leaving Hairplay and going to Alcheme on Sutter Street. I will miss the super nice people at Hairplay but I will follow Marty wherever he goes!
I love you, Marty!
DO NOT GO TO HAIR PLAY!!! MARTY IS NO LONGER THERE. DON'T HAVE KATRINA CUT. I went to Hair play, (have been to Marty and LOVED HIM, but he's no longer there) had Katrina cut/color my hair. The salon over-books the stylists. She rushed EVERYTHING. Had to go to another salon to fix the uneven cut, as well take off the dead hair she left!! Then looking at my color...there are roots. At least half an inch.. have to go to another salon to re-color. As well FRITZ is the RUDEST MGR. He blew me off and thinks he can treat customers like crap! Filing charges against the salon. Not to mention that the day I had my re-do app.. salon called to CANCEL app at noon. my app was for 5.
Before I came to San Francisco I received an awful haircut and my hair was slightly damaged and dry with not so perfect highlights.
To say the least, after I went to Fritz, my hair was completely transformed... shiny, healthy, perfect highlights/ all around color and the perfect cut for my face. I now just say whatever you think and it comes out perfectly every time. Not only does Fritz cut my hair perfectly but he also cuts my boyfriends hair perfectly and we both love his products!
I highly recommend this salon and Fritz for everyone with any type of hair. Thank you Hair Play!!!
So over 2 years later I'm still a faithful client to Matthew. Sure I got a buzz cut for a couple of months and didn't see him, but I like playing around with my hair and Matthew always makes it work for me. He's the type where I can say I don't know what I want, but just make it happen...and he does. He knows what I like and don't like. If I want something more conservative he'll do it...if I want it edgey he'll do it. I love this guy!! Go see him...he's now in LA too!

Anne Marie is awsome. I've been going to see her for more than 10 years at hairplay. She has always done my hair exactly how I've wanted it. And I have been through a lot of colors in 10 years. I've got naturally dark hair and her magic color skills have transformed it to almost every color there is. The cut is always beautifully done and styled and everyone asks me where I get my hair done (well, women anyway).
I would definately reccommend this salon, the staff is always friendly and I'm always happy with my stylist.
Looking for a stylist who knows how to cut curly? Try Ann Marie.
I'd been driving all the way down to Menlo Park to see the "Curl Whisperer" (my nickname for her, not hers) but her prices got a bit too high and I got a couple of cuts that made me look like Mozart. I found Hair Play on yelp and was a bit apprehensive because I hadn't heard anything about Ann Marie in particular, but she was available, so I agreed to see her.
My hair has changed drastically over the past 2 years due to stress and is a shadow of its once luxurious, thick self, but Ann Marie still managed to make it go from limp and drab to hot. Now, happily, my hair is growing back. And it looks sexy-funky thanks to her.
Only 4 stars because I'm only paying marginally less than I was in Menlo Park! These cuts are expensive...
Fritz worked his magic again! Friday Fritz colored and styled my hair - lovely! After visiting the Grand Canyon, sleeping on Amtrak, I arrived in Chicago for my brother's Saturday wedding (8 days after Fritz) to rave reviews! I received so many compliments on my color and style. Thanks to Fritz!

I need to warn anyone headed to Hair Play. Do not, I repeat DO NOT get anything done by TAMMY. She gave me the worst haircut of my life. It was a complete mess. As soon as I got home I cried for an hour. I had to go out and buy some new hats. That was the biggest hair mistake of my life. Maybe we should judge a book by its cover
Very happy with Katrina at this salon - she's highly experienced and I've never had a bad cut from her. She listens to what you ask for plus she understands the way my hair grows.
I'm not sure they really know how to work with Asian hair. I got bangs, and she said "I think you will need a week for them to settle, they're not used to it".
Thats not exactly what I like to hear after my $65 haircut. They may be great for non-Asian hair, but if you have fine thin hair, stick to Japantown. Better value.
Oh I have to change my review because they let Laurel move to a different salon - are they crrahhhaaazyyy???
Luckily I found out where she works now so I'll be a new customer of Groove Salon. yipieee
original review:
There are only a handful of nights a year I feel unbelievably beautiful and at least three of those I owe to Laurel.
Then there are few nights I feel pretty - not unbelievably pretty but you know.. pretty. Well, those nights I owe to Laurel.
Then the average nights and guess what, I don't feel too bad about myself lately. And why? Because I finally found somebody that is able to handle my fre*kshow of curly, frizzy hair.
Thank you Laurel! If I just weren't so lazy .....

Go to Matthew~
I have been seeing Matthew for a little over three years and he is the best! He always adds an artistic touch to whatever my latest color or cut request is....I have pretty much sent every friend and family member to him and everybody loves him...plus he's adorable.
Kisses Matthew. xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo
I have to tell you-getting my first gray hair was not nearly as traumatic as one would think. I was actually intrigued by the single curled hair that nestled itself in between my bangs.
I messaged my twin about it and his immediate response was, "Don't tell me this is your FIRST gray hair? I've been finding grays since my 20s!"
My response? "Well, J--, why yes it is, it is my FIRST gray hair," I messaged back smugly (now this is not entirely true because I think I did have one about 2 1/2 years ago but it was not a good day, I convinced myself that I had accidentally got some white-out in my hair, had Scott A. pluck it off my head, and made him swear to never bring it up with me again).
I actually kept that little hair on my head to show my twin a week later when he made his annual I-now-live-in-Texas-everyone-loves-me-throw-a-big- party-every-single-night-what-does-J-want-to-do-wh o-is-this-Bonnie-person-why-does-she-exist trip to visit us in the bay area.
But a classy lady in her 30s does not start conversations about her newly acquired gray hair with single men so the harmless gray hair was plucked after J's visit and an appointment was made with the amazing Anne Marie at Hair Play. I've been going to Hair Play for over 10 years solely because of Anne Marie and her saintly techno-color abilities.
About two months ago I realized I was in need of some serious updating. I sat down and told Anne Marie I was sick of my boring, long, brown hair-just cut it off and make it dark. I got a little nervous when I saw over six inches of hair piled up on the floor but I couldn't have been happier with the end result. That's trust for you. Plus, Anne Marie is quick, friendly, hilarious-always a joy to be around.
After today's appointment with Anne Marie I now have dark red hair, some funky little bangs and I'm loving it.
Tammye has been cutting my hair for a few years now, and that's kind of usual for me. I've never formed any sort of allegiance to hair dressers, I just took advantage of what was close when I needed a clean up.
A few years ago I lived in Duboce Triangle and one night I got run over by a hit and run drunk driver while riding my bicycle. I got pretty torn up, and couldn't walk for about two months and basically holed up in my house for a while. Finally I reached that point where I needed to get out of the rut that severe injury brings and limped down to the nearest hair salon to my house (Anvil, on 14th and Sanchez) and asked if they took walk ins. I needed to clean myself up, take care of myself. Tammye cut my hair, I was very happy how it ended up, and things were alright. We didnt talk too much that time, but it was not awkward like many hair stylists seem to be when you aren't the kind of person who is a bubbly conversationalist.
Anyway, that was about 3 years ago and I still go to Tammye, when she left Anvil she cut my hair in the upstairs of an art gallery in the Tenderloin, and I am happy that I have found her again at Hair Play. It's a nice location, (the atrium they have there is kind of special and I recommend sitting out there for a minute if you have a chance) and a relaxed environment. I dont really tell her what to do to my hair anymore, she knows what I am comfortable with but still doesn't do exactly the same thing every time. Theres creativity to her work but she also knows how to listen and read people. She's a good person herself (now that ive had a few years of haircuts to get to know her, we can talk a little more freely than when she first cut my hair) and Ive never been less than completely satisfied with what she does to my hair and at this point I couldn't really imagine going to anyone else.
This is the first ever review I've ever written on Yelp, I wouldn't have bothered if I didnt want to help out and give respect to someone I really believe in.
I've had my hair straightened here by Analise. She was trained under Patrick Evan and is very experienced.
She is also very cautious. She was worried my hair couldn't tolerate the straightening (because I was a bad girl and got highlights...) so she wouldn't do the straightening the first time I made my appointment. This was a little bit of a pain because I took a whole day off (the process takes about 5-7 hours) So she cut a piece of hair for a strand test and had me make a new appointment. To console me she had another stylist give me a hair cut -- which came out fabulous!
After testing my hair with the chemicals, I came back three weeks later and she did the straightening. I was very happy with the results, however, she used a weaker solution because of my "over processed hair." As a result, my hair didn't come out very straight. However, the texture was greatly improved.
This is the happiest hair cut and style i have ever had!! Ive walked out with victoria's secret hair!
and ive been wondering how they do that lately. Really. i have been in need of some real hair education from someone who knows my hair, which is mixed afro/euro confusion for me.
and then i met APRIL! she spent sooo much time with me telling me tricks and explaining how to work with my hair along with introducing me to hair texturizing. now i can walk into auditions looked perfectly manicured with ease. My hair flows and doesnt feel heavy and sticky with products which previously was the only way i knew to tame my hair! and she was so nice and interested. you can tell she genuinely LOVES her job and making people happy! I sure am and im sending all my friends to her especially the mixy ones
I hadn't been to a salon in 5 years but I wanted to color my dreadlocks. I was really afraid to color them myself or to go to just any salon because dreadlocks are so chunky and fragile, that if something goes wrong and your hair gets damaged, whole locks could fall off. NOT GOOD! So, when I saw an ad for Hairplay that mentioned that they did locks. I was definitely interested. Then, when I visited the website, I saw that the owner was a man of color with locks. Well, that just did it. I called a made an appointment right away!
Marty did my hair. He's great. Although his hair is stick straight, he had enough experience to know that a dime size of shampoo is not enough for Black hair. He washed my hair several times (commonly missed by non African American stylists) and, he gave me a great cut.
He didn't twist my hair as tight as i would have liked. Although the second time i went he got better. But, he had a lot of experience styling dreadlocks and he made mine look beautiful.
He also did a great job on my color. I took some magazines in and he adapted the color for dreadlocks. It's been 6 months and it still looks very good.
Looking around, I knew I had found the right place. The clientele and stylists are very diverse and they appear to have mastered what is an enigma to most salons that don't specialize in African American hair, the perm.
They also seemed genuinely in tune with their clients' wishes. Not only were they giving some folks very trendy styles, the people who marched to their own outrageous beat, were in there for one-of-a-kind creations. I also saw some older ladies getting their umpteenth Anita Baker or Halle Berry circa 1992 cut, and it was looking as good in 2005 as it did then.
p.s. For folks with straight hair who want locks, Marty also knows how to put locks into straight hair. He's a genius.
new do update: Last month Marty colored by locks a beautiful chocolate. Before that he put in some fun chunky blond highlights.
I walked out of Hairplay with the worst haircut ever. I'm still growing it out and the hairdressers I have gone to since have all asked, "Who did that to your hair?!" Not only did my stylist, Denise, seem like she'd rather be anywhere else than cutting my hair, she also did the hard core sell on their products.
Oh, and I waited 45 minutes for the haircut to begin.
Worst hairdresser experience ever.
Ok, so I got bumped for Naomi Campbell. I wasn't happy b/c I desperately needed a haircut. But hey! My stylist does Naomi Campbell's hair!
I think Fritz and his team are awesome at Hairplay. I always enjoy going, even if it is a bit of a wait. The scene is relaxing and everyone is ready and willing to chat it up - just like a good salon should ;-)
And when I ask Fritz to "just make me look hot" without any real idea of what I want - I always love the end results. HOT!! (see my main photo. I loved that haircut so much i took a picture of it and emailed it the the parents. Dork move, I don't care.)
When I walk out, I officially say "I've been Fritzed".
ATTENTION ALL WOMEN OF COLOR!!!! We finally have a place to go in the city. Caution: Don't be dooped into going to the only black girl at the salon, April! Not worth the trouble... she had me waiting all day, wasn't that great, and for some reason charges way, way, way, more than everybody else!!!???
MARTY on the other hand is FABULOUS!! He can style my lovely curly/fine locks marvelously. Straighten, curl, cut, and color, he is the bomb! I've seen him do every type of hair. He's patient, listens (which seems to be asking for way too much with stylist), takes his time, but doesn't have you waiting the whole day. I'm almost conflicted with writing this review because I'd like to keep having him all to myself, but i'm not that selfish (lucky for you). Seriously, if you live in the city, it really couldn't be more convenient. Have fun!
UPDATE! 6/07
OK! The honeymoon is over with my stylist so I've taken away another star. I'll wait unil I have one more bad experience to tell you all about it...
I've never found this place very friendly. Laurel styled my hair at least 3-4 times. The first time she was extremely friendly, but not so during my subsequent visits so this leads me to believe she's just a phony (I'm an excellent tipper so that wasn't the reason).
The cut was just average, I guess I kept going in hopes that her mood and would improve and that her skills would finally surface.
On more than one occasion, she took on another patron so I was kept waiting. Not cool and not worth the money I forked over.
I haven't even been here yet (I'll give an update after my appointment) but I give Fritz and his team 5 stars! I emailed Fritz with a horror story: home relaxing kit, uneven textures, flat, dull, thin hair; and he responded the same day. He's going to try to fix my beast and I have faith cause I've only heard good things. Keep your fingers cross folks! My hair is definitely a doosy!
Update: I took away two stars because after the initial contact no one made the follow up. Don't know what happened, but we never got in touch. I ended up just going back to the same ol' boring braids as usual.
This place would be expensive in any other city (including NYC), but for SF is is worth every penny.
Peggy cuts my hair. Guy hair, that looks like guy hair. She is friendly without being nosey. She is fast without being reckless. She has a memory that is simply amazing.
Are you looking for a good short haircut. Something current, but not silly?
Make an appointment now, because Peggy is very busy.
I'm not an attractive man, but Matthew makes me feel pretty. For that, I'd almost be willing to switch teams.
...but Matthew can do better, so I'll give him his stars and be on my way.
I have to give a ringing endorsement for my girl Onika at Joe Hamer. I've been going to her since she was at Edo on Haight/Steiner, and I won't go to anyone else anymore. She's always taken plenty of time and made sure I was happy with my haircut. I feel like if I'm going to shell out $60 for a haircut, I'm getting someone who actually cares and doesn't make me feel like we're rushing to the next client.
About Hairplay, I like the salon, its a fun and slightly edgier kinda place. Kinda weird to find it at first, and then trek up a buttload of steps, but its got the urban oasis thing going on and some nice views from the windows.
I don't really have a ton of salon experience, so I don't what to compare it to, but its way cooler than Supercuts.
If you want fun colors and cuts, ask for Anne Marie. I've been going to her for the past 4 yrs. She can cut short and long hair-i know cuz i've done both. Rely on her advice when you want colors in your hair!
Update: still seeing her...seriously, this is my longest relationship ever in the city. ;)
I have to give Hair Play 5 stars cuz' of the kick-ass job Marty did on my hair. I was to the point where my long hair was always in a ponytail, or buns, or in a hat... That means it's time to chop.
So... Marty chopped. and Colored (just the roots). On short notice too..
If you want to see how hot my hair looks...See my profile pic (@ raggamuffin fest)
Thanks again Marty!
