I always look forward to my haircuts at Hair of the Gods!
The salon itself is clean, beautiful, and has such a calm and peaceful atmosphere. There is no pretentiousness here like I've felt at other salons in the area, just a friendly staff and a comfortable setting. And then there are the haircuts.....just killer! Betsey Low was recommended by several friends of mine and has been my stylist for several years now and she never disappoints me! She's a great listener and very attentive, and will often have new styles in mind to share with me at or prior to the appointment And, most importantly, she makes my short drab hair look absolutely stunning!!
True story: Just mere minutes after my last haircut I was walking home and was a few blocks from the salon when an SUV stops in the middle of the road adjacent to me, the driver rolls down the passenger side window, and he actually yells "I LOVE Your Hair!" I thanked him and then he continued on his way. Now *I* always LOVE my cuts by Betsey, but to have complete strangers go out of their way to notice and say something about it just proves to me that I've made a great choice in stylist!
I have pretty straight hair, but it's coarse and has a tendency to get big and frizzy. When I go for a cut, I always need to get a lot of the weight chopped out from underneath to minimize the hugeness, preferably when my hair is dry. Geno did take off some of the weight but then wanted to send me on my way with wet hair. He said I could come back anytime if I didn't like the way it looked. I told him it still felt too big and would prefer to have it dried in the salon to make sure. Without any protest he dried it, witnessed first-hand its hugeness and then cut off a ton more. In the end it was one of best haircuts I've ever had, but if I had been nervous to speak up, it might have been one of the worst.
Bonus: the music was great and the space is awesome. It feels like you're getting a hair cut in a rainforest.
Whether you are facing a skunk stripe down your part or just dealing with those annoying grey sprouts, ANYSSA is the go to girl for your coloring needs. Her work is perfection and my hair always comes out looking healthy and best yet the color is one recognizeable on this earth!
The salon is so unexpected and calm to go to. I love Geno's aesthetic. Each time you sit in a chair you notice some other object or new plant that wasn't there before. Very cool staff and a great place to come to.
Love it!
Stylist: Anyssa
Not a dumb blonde, I don't want to look like one. Anyssa knows her colors and mixes glorious shades which look natural for 8 MONTHS, no contrasty roots, no evidence of a dye job. During my second appointment I could tell she was weaving carefully patching and creating art, not just going through the usual routine.
Salon: Hair of the Gods is a stimulating yet calming experience with global decor and huge plants and soft lighting. Nothing sterile or typical about it. Eclectic, yes done with a discerning eye and with care and heart.
The owner: Geno
Although he did not work on my hair he gave Anyssa some pointers and spent time with us, even though it made him late to Yoga. The result, Anyssa gave me one of my best cuts, EVER!
Thanks guys and gals!
Good work should be recognized.
When I moved back to CA from Colorado, I was in desperate need of a great stylist. I was very reluctant to try someone new, as I was going to my best friend, and obviously trusted her immensely. I used Yelp to help me find a good stylist in the area. I stumbled upon Hair of the Gods and read all of the reviews by the other clients. Intrigued, and interested I made an appointment with Geno. I will never forget my first appointment. The salon was not what I had expected. Not stuffy, or uppity, but instead filled with plants and treasures collected from Geno's travels. Geno made me feel incredibly comfortable, while he highlighted and cut my hair. He ended up spending 3 hours on my hair, and I have to say that it never looked better. The color was beautiful, and the cut was exactly what I wanted. Geno has a way with hair that makes you look amazing. He says that he just "listens to the hair" and somehow that always makes it look amazing. I trust him completely, and often let him do what he thinks will look best. Even though I have many friends who are stylists, Geno is the one person who has made my hair look truly amazing. I continue to drive 50 miles each way because I don't think that I will ever find someone as good. Yelp really helped me find a diamond in the rough!
I've had my hair done by both Rudy and Geno- they are both wonderful and talented! The overall feel of the place is so cozy and you feel like you're in amazon rainforest. Wonderful people. Wonderful place.
I love love LOVE John Nick! After only going to one colorist ever in my life, I was really afraid to try someone new. A friend recommended John Nick. He is just wonderful!! My brownish-blond hair now has lovely, natural, sunkissed highlights (without using bleach) and a cool new cut too!
John actually LISTENS to what you want and actually DOES IT! I thought that was impossible to find, but it's true. If you want a great cut or color from a cool, interesting but not self-absorbed guy, go to John Nick.
John's prices are very reasonable ($145 for an abundance of highlights on my long hair, plus cut & style). The salon is as down to earth as the people who work there - very hippy-artsy and comfortable. Pay parking lot around the corner for $10 but you can park free for 2 hours if you can find street parking a block away.
It's all about Anyssa and Kelly!
After the most outrageously hideous hair dye and cut I've ever received, I found Hair of the Gods through Yelp and called up Kelly. She was SO nice, understanding, and helpful on the phone. She recommended I see Anyssa and she was right. Anyssa is the definition of the "right" hair stylist - she is professional, thorough, creative and awesome. We always have great conversation, and she always makes my hair look fan-freggin-tastic. After the first time I went to Anyssa, I created a page for her on yelp for her review, she was just that great. But I wanted to add a review for her on the Hair of the Gods page because I also wanted to include Kelly - who is obviously the heart and soul of the studio. I highly doubt the studio could function without her.
If you want your hair done right - you just gotta go to Anyssa at Hair of the Gods, end of story.
Unique salon tucked away in Hayes Valley. The salon feels like a spiritual atrium with deities, plants and religious symbolics from around the world embellishing each and every corner of the space. Not typically my thing, but at the same time, I can't help but love this experience !!
Rudy is amazing. I've always been completely satisfied with the way he colors, cuts and styles my hair. Rudy is a true artist, something that cannot be said about previous hairdressers I've had. He is completely fixated on perfecting his clients' hair.
On my recent visit, I found out that he was on set of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs latest video 'Zero' filmed in SF. He showed me pictures of Karen O.'s hair that he worked on. Very cool !
I've lived here in SF for 3 years now, but would always get my hair colored by my stylist in San Diego every time I went home as she knows what I want and does a great job. The fear of getting a bad color job had held me back, but after reading fab reviews about Hair of the Gods I thought i'd give them a go.
I went to see Anyssa for my first time and I now see why she has so many great reviews!! She is fantastic, very thorough and detail oriented, and extremely nice. I called her up, she squeezed me in and did a great color job with low and high-lights. She listened to what I was looking for, gave me some suggestions and worked her magic!
Anyssa truly is a great colorist, and trust me having experienced bad color jobs myself, you won't have to worry with her. She's professional, friendly, creative, and listens to what you want. I am very particular about my hair, and a stylist who knows how to color is extremely important to me. Her prices are reasonable for SF, and your hair will come out looking fab!!
My hair has found a new home. I love Hair of the Gods and I love Shannon! She's cut my hair about 3 times and colored my hair too. I feel extremely lucky to live so close to this place which makes it incredibly convenient for me.
Here's my breakdown of why I love it here (in no particular order):
HOURS:
Shannon's hours are convenient for me. She works easily around my schedule and will even take hours that are outside of the usual 9-5 for normal salons.
THE VIBE:
Hands down, the best atmosphere of any salon ever. As much as I like the modern, sleek salons, I like this one way more. It's cozier, homier, more organic and earthy feeling. What other salon has a tree growing in the middle of it, and skylights?? Yeah I thought so. It calms you down just being there. which is a big difference from the cold and proper feeling at other salons. And the people there are great! Very friendly and upbeat.
CUTTING:
I've never been disappointed by Shannon's cuts. She's versatile, will listen to what you want even if your idea of it is incredibly vague. I've also shown her pictures in mags and she does an awesome job of making it look like it and adjusting it to your own facial/hair characteristics. She also takes her time and pays attention to detail no matter how busy she is and that's always a great thing (and hard to find). My roommate came with me to get her hair cut too and she's a convert too now. :)
COLORING:
I had my first real color experience with Shannon (bleach and color). I had purple and pink chunks done, and she did them beaaaautttifully! It's also been 3 months since I had it done and the colors still look sweet!! Endless amount of compliments on my hair, and I never knew how fun colors could be. Shannon was great at telling me how to adjust my life to colored hair (how to lessen the colors coming out and making sure my stuff at home didn't stain). I think everyone who's done color with Shannon knows that she is the color master and entrust her with complete confidence. I know I do.
PRICE:
Certainly not on the lower end of price ranges (I'd say it's the mid-range), but for the quality of the cuts, I have no problem paying what I do. You don't have to worry about leaving the place feeling like you essentially wasted your money. Instead, you'll be glad you spent it.
Thanks Shannon and thanks Hair of the Gods!!
Donelle M, I can't quit you!
I really can't afford to get my hair cut or colored anymore in this shite economy, but I'd rather miss a credit card payment than go to a cheap-ass salon where I can't trust the hairdresser.
You complete me!
i just got back from a haircut with shannon @ hair of the gods, and i'm seriously high on this cut right now.
the first time i went in to see shannon was on a recommendation of a friend. i had no idea what i wanted, i knew i just needed some kind of change. my hair is extremely thick, dense, and heavy, so its not always the easiest thing to work with and definitely takes a lot more time than the average hair cut. shannon explained to me what she thought would look good on my face and with the degree of effort i was willing to vest in my hair every day, and gave me a super cute cut with some long chunky layers. people complimented that cut for two months after it was done.
in between then and now, i neglected to go in for a while, but guess what, shannon didn't give me shit about it, it was just as pleasant as ever. today i had a greater idea of what i wanted in a cut, and shannon took that, made some adjustments for me, and for style and i ended up with *literally* the most awesome haircut of my whole dang life. its fresh and light and relevant; i can wear this cut mod and clean or lose and wispy.
moreover, my experience with shannon was profound; i found myself having absolute trust for what she thought was right with my hair. i felt as though she had my best interest in mind the whole time. we talked trought the entire 1.5 hour haircut effortlessly about life and art and i felt like i was hanging out with a friend.
honestly, i would rate this experience five stars ++, that's how stoked i am. reasonably priced, good atmosphere, great company and *amazing* haircut.
I've been getting my hair cut by Betsey Low at Hair of the Gods for I don't know how long. Have never had a reason to go to anyone else. I'm somewhat vain about my hair in general, and I love Betsey's work (get lots of compliments on it, too). I've sent several friends there who were happy with her as well. Prices are reasonable, too. And she's really friendly, and listens when I, say, just want a little bit more off on the sides or something. And did I mention I love my hair cuts?
The salon is very cool, too - lots of art all over the place. Parking is fairly easy as well - I just go a few blocks away, and leave a little extra time - have never had a problem.
Ten years of great haircuts with Donelle. Beautiful studio, great location, cool music, nice vibe. The perfect San Francisco experience. Highly recommended!
Anyssa is THE hair color Goddess. I haven't let anyone else touch my head in the last four years. She get's it perfect every single time and I without fail walk away from her chair a very happy girl. AND she gives a great hair cut too. I have been stopped in the street, the gym, dance clubs, and grocery stores to be told by complete strangers that I have fabulous hair (I kid you not) and I am all to happy to wip out Anyssa's business card and pass the joy around. I would recommend her to EVERYONE that wants to look and feel like the sexy vixen you are.
AND, it is just icing on the cake to have such a lovely creature, that Anyssa most certainly is, making you look beautiful.
Oh and the salon itself is a sight to be seen. It's like the sacred temple of eye candy. You'll think you dyed (pun intended) and went to hair heaven.
The fact that I literally just got home from my appointment says something about the intensity of the experience. Luckily, in this case, it's all good news. I'm one of those people who gets really anxious prior to my bi-annual hair chop, then feigns being zen in front of the stylist, and ultimately ends up with a ponytail on the way home in order to avoid dealing with the 'do.
It may have been the spiritual collage decorating the place, or the incredibly sweet and low-maintenance staff, or the general atmosphere of a funky, comfy, plant-y living room, but I didn't even have to put on airs of enjoying the cutting process or cover my head afterwards.
I have copious amounts of incredibly dense and curly hair, and am used to being tsk-tsked by the entire salon. Geno not only made me feel like the most normal-tressed person in the world, but cut with such ease and comfort that it was uncanny. He really does know hair, and I can vouch that he does a fine curly cut for those of you who don't want to go full-'fro. We had a great conversation and he didn't rush me out. For $75 it's not a bargain, but it's well worth it.
The whole haircut was not merely painless, it was...pleasurable. This is wonderful new territory for me and I look forward to going back.
Geno is the greatest thing that has ever happened to my hair.
As long as I live in SF, I will never go anywhere else.
Color, cut, he's top notch. He's also a pleasure to spend a few hours with every couple of months. I'm also completely addicted to the Eufora hair products he sells.
The atmosphere at the place is fantastic. Plants, deities, great music, and incredible photography by Geno himself. It doesn't get much better.
This hidden little jewel of a salon is one of San Francisco's worst kept secrets! It is tucked away - out of sight - but keep it in mind if you need a stylist! It is like being in a temple/spa.
Shannon is a Goddess of color. If you need tiger stripes, red, white and blue, or the just the hottest looking highlights ever - she is the one for you. This woman is a natural - an artist.
Pricey, but worth every cent.
I love my hair! I love it, I love it, I LOVE IT! Anyssa is Hair Genius Extraordinaire. She does a glorious red that stays consistent between colorings and if you know anything about red, you know it fades easily. In fact, my red is so natural that people who have only known me as a redhead don't believe the Facebook pix that show me as a blond in high school are actually me. That's good stuff, man.
The salon is gorgeous, Geno is a dream, and Kelly is so dang sweet that my teeth hurt when I leave. I love this place and if I could live there, I would. If you want hair so good you'll slap your momma, call up Anyssa and get to slappin'....
Rudy.........Mmmmmmm........went for a styled cut........left with a 'Rachael from Friends' do circa '96.
Not the look I was going for; not the look I described plus, the horror, I was BANGED....... (took freakin' months for them to grow out too)
So, the search for an adept hairstylist continues. Oh and it was $90 for a simple haircut. $90! Wah?
I will admit that I don't have the easiest hair to deal with. I also have a lot of mistrust of the scissorhand from bad experiences with a straight haired mother who didn't know how to deal with my unruly, curly, beach damaged hair as a child. Donnelle at Hair of the Gods has absolutely restored my faith. Now twice.
I've been waiting for years to have someone talk me into cutting bangs, for fear of the dreaded curly bang visor, but Donnelle talked me into it and did a great job. I love my hair cut and visits to Hair of the Gods is a pleasurable and relaxing experience with all the amazing plants art and fountain. It's a gorgeous salon, centrally located in Hayes Valley and for a change for the first time in my life... I'm looking forward to my next haircut!
Geno - nice enough cut, but could you please show some interest in the client and spend less time talking about yourself?
this unique salon space is an exquisite melange of altars and various paeans to spirituality, of which anyssa is a delightful and perfectly placed piece of awesome. i sipped some bergamot tea and relaxed under the *huge* tree in the center of the salon while my color set... a perfect piece of nature inside that makes the place seem that much closer to nirvana. i left feeling like a raven-tressed goddess; clearly geno's hair of the gods lives up to its name.
my hair color is gorgeous, i absolutely love it. black can be flat and boring, and this color is anything but that! it is shiny and full of volume and looks so healthy; i get compliments daily and love the looks of surprise from those who don't know or can't tell i am actually a natural blonde!
to top it all off, anyssa is a total sweetheart and just a doll to spend the morning with. i left with a beautiful cut and color in the time she said it would take and the experience was worth every penny. anyssa (and the salon, as i understand it) is super flexible with scheduling as well. (get in while she still has that freedom, this gal is hot and her stylist dance card should fill up quick!)
the single star removed is only because of the cash only policy. fortunately, there is an atm a short hop away at the walgreen's on the corner.
I've always been a "SuperCuts" kind of guy as far as I can remember. It's convenient folks.
But on the recommendation of numerous co-workers ALL of who go to Geno, I finally gave HOTG and Geno a go and LOVED what he did with my hair! I have thick, dense and wavy hair and Geno worked his magic and literally gave me hope that my type of hair can be styled and made to look naturally wonderful. Thanks Geno!
They have a great set up. The salon is comfortable, a great set up and just down right awesome! Geno is a maestro with all types of hair and a true genius.
If you are serious about your hair, definitely go to HOTG. I'd have kept going but having to tighten my belt has prevented me from going. One day... one day...
This review is for Betsy.
I do not like getting my hair cut. It's long, curly and hard to manage plus I'm super tender headed.
Betsy is my hair hero! She LISTENS and then does what I ask. I've been twice and have walked out both times 100% satisfied. She understands I don't like product in my hair nor blowdrying and doesn't force anything on me. Plus she's an awesome lady and fun to talk to...hair salon gossiping at it's finest.
With Betsy I don't have the usual panic attack before going and afterwards I feel pretty! What more can you ask for?
I will still only get my hair cut once, maybe twice a year but I have found my hair goddess and will never look for another.
Haircuts always look great for the 1st couple of days (well, it does for me anyway) So I wanted to wait a few days after the haircut before I reviewed this place. Now I've waited a whole week and my hair still looks great. I called for an appointment with Rudy and got 1 the next day. He listened carefully and understood exactly what I wanted. The search for the perfect hairstylist ends here The prices are reasonable. I paid $75 + tip for a wash, cut and blow-dry and that also includes free bang trims in between hair cuts.
Geno was wonderful. He returned my call within several hours and scheduled me for the following week.
Geno was super sweet. He listened to thoughts I had on my hair and they chimed in with his. The cut was perfect. I love it.
He also spent extra time showing me styling tricks and fun up-dos. I didn't feel like he pushed products on me. After he finished the cut he spent time chatting with me about my hair.
I really felt like a special client as opposed to salons where they rush you in and out.
I have received a ton of compliments on my hair and am grateful to have found him. (He was recommended to me by someone who is about as harsh a critic as you get.)
Ever since my last stylist moved, I haven't been able to find anyone to cut my hair. I plan to be a dedicated Geno follower, and will return in about 6 to 8 weeks.
DONNELLE!!!!! The best hair-cuttress ever. Let Donnelle restore your faith in the simple hair cut. Trust me!
Anyssa Jordan is at Hair of the Gods and I have literally followed her for 10 years.
Anyssa has been my colorist and cutter since the late 90's! I come in every 5-6 weeks or so to get my roots done to reflect my natural (uhhhhh hhhmmmmmm) blonde color and she does a fabulous job.
She is friendly, sweet and easy to talk to.....or not if that's your thing. She is always on time and professional and every time I walk out of the salon I get comments on how great my hairs look. (If only I could have her style my hair every day!)
The salon itself is pure eye candy. I've been there more times than I can count and I see something new every time. You got to see it to believe it!
The stylists were very polite about my non-trendy upkeep and stressed hair which was as stressed as I was prior to sitting in that chair at that late Friday evening appointment.
As far as limitations on where I'll venture to, paying attention to what i'm supposed to be doing and where I should be going and the micro-management of society's every rule is not me so my approach is simple, do my research, look for talent, hesitate, and then I'm off, so with all of that I was off to the Hair of the Gods.
I called in advance to find out if a normal haircut was possible and the answer was yes. I got in soon after my call.
I get my haircut about twice a year for two reasons:
- most stylists can't do the layers that I like (sweeping, simple, Ralph Lauren style model hair)
- not a fan of other people's experiments that I have to wear around. (it's like a hangover you can't quite shake that's attached to your head.
waking up every morning, raising up from the sink with an AAH scream inside my head, followed by regret churning in the stomach is an experience I like to reenact.. about twice a year.)
I'm not going to lie, I strongly disliked this haircut at first, but I believe the hairdresser has an eye, if not an ear :D.
I was afraid he wasn't being thorough because he was quick, but the haircut was a thorough cut with no accidental or forgotten patches.
I was repetitive about looking to maintain the preceding cut and about distance of my hair from my chin and what I got was "a great new cut for a new city." In retrospect it was pretty harmless and I even grew to like it.
Since I had to pick up some anyway and I'm always experimenting to find that perfect "shine that doesn't dull the lightness in my hair"
I picked up some of the shampoo and conditioner. The shampoo and conditioner smells nice, very minty and fragrant but I don't think it added to my hair leaving it frizzy and slightly more dull in color; my hair color has always been natural.
The location itself was visibly appealing with large plants, walls of antique picture frames and small statues abound. For all of it's glamor, I found the place to be very approachable and amenable.
I went for my first appointment here and was delighted with the results. John Nick is quite skilled and has good instincts about styles that work.
I'm not terribly adventurous when it comes to hair, but I was willing to give his ideas for my hair a chance, and he definitely came through with a great cut and style for me. It's different, easy to care for, and extremely easy to style (or not at all) :-)
Furthermore, the atmosphere of the salon is fabulous! It's in an older building up a few winding flights of stairs, across creaking wood floors and in a large room with myriad objects from different cultures decorating the walls and ceiling. Amidst the objects are the stylists' stations, created with re-purposed furniture. All together, the space is really vibrant and full of character.
What can I say? I've been going to Hair of the Gods since Shannon moved there -cause, you see, I've been trusting Shannon with my hair for over 7 years. I love Shannon. I mean truth be told, she's one of my best friends in the whole world. What started as a professional relationship, grew and morphed and twisted and turned into a beautifully dynamic friendship.
But you're here to read about hair right? Well Shannon rocks in that department. She's creative, talented, patient with my swings from super short to "growing it out" without ever pressuring me to do anything that doesn't feel right. She's extremely communicative when it comes to options and what each option will mean for me - and not just at the moment but also what it might mean from a maintenance perspective.
And beyond her skills as a stylist, she is the consummate professional. Always on time, calls to remind me, shows up and is present at every haircut (even when I know things are tumultuous in her life) - her business is extremely important to her, and it shows.
And finally the salon - it's beautiful, comfortable and full of lovely people who all care about their customers, and many of whom I've known for a number of years. Every 4 weeks when I come in for my cut, it feels like coming home - a truly beautiful experience.
I cannot tell a lie: Shannon scares me.
Maybe I just caught her on a bad day, but my experience was far from pleasant. I had a hair color formula from a prior hair stylist, which I wanted Shannon to duplicate. I went to her because she uses the same color brand that my old stylist uses. Before my appointment, she informed me that she is cash-only and would charge me $80. I asked her about parking, and she said "it shouldn't be a problem at 6:30 on a Wednesday." I got there a half-hour early and drove around for 40 minutes before I found a parking spot. I called her to let her know I would be late, and she was clearly pissed off at me.
When I arrived, I was 10 minutes late. Shannon was standing outside the salon when I arrived. I didn't know she was my stylist, but I smiled and said hi anyway. She didn't smile and barely acknowledged me. I went into the salon and it was empty; after a couple of minutes she walked in. I had to ask, "are you Shannon?" and introduce myself. She was totally unfriendly.
She bitched through the entire appointment about the fact that my old stylist used "FIVE COLORS" which she apparently likens to a cardinal sin. She refused to put in the fifth color, saying it didn't make any sense. She rushed through the entire appointment because she had scheduled a business meeting exactly one hour after my appointment began. I've NEVER had an appointment that short, and I wasn't exactly reassured by her comments, "I learned how to work really, really fast if necessary at my first job." I didn't sign up for a quickie color. Yes, I was 10 minutes late--but even if I'd arrived at exactly at 6:30, she still wouldn't have had enough time. Not to mention the fact that this was my FIRST visit to her, and she should have been at her best.
At the end of the appointment one of the people attending her business meeting commented on how beautiful my hair color is. Only then did she admit that my old stylist knew what he was doing--she even said she would use the formula on other clients who complained that her color was too bright. So...if you get your hair colored a very natural looking red by Shannon and you really like it, you can thank David from Studio Hotel Lilly in Columbus, Ohio--not Shannon. Also, I must add that the fifth color WAS necessary, because my color looked different this time.
The appointment ended abruptly because of her badly scheduled business meeting. She barely blew my hair dry and didn't style it at all. Then she said, "your hair is longer than you described it over the phone. It will be $90 instead of $80. Cash only."
Gee, thanks.
I'm always very pleased with Donelle, she has talent. She tends to run a bit behind sometimes, but she's worth it. I love the ambiance too. Prices are the typical salon prices, but a bit steep for poor unemployed students such as myself. The good news though is that a great cut will grow out well and you don't need to frequent the salon as often.
Thank you, Donelle, for not being judgmental when I came to you a full year after my last haircut with my scraggledy post-hippy hair, looking like I should be hitting on Borgs at a sci-fi convention while wearing a purple Guatemalan schmata and attempting to impersonate Diana Troy.
ANYWAY. You gave me a sexy 1930s bob, reminiscent of whoreish, stripper mom Rita Mae on "Carnivale". I've already gotten many, many compliments on my hair. This is the place to go if you want to look like a Dust Bowl-era, Carny stripper (in the sexiest possible way!)
OK, so I have only been to this place once. I saw Shannon. SHe took one look at my hair, and told me:
"You look bald, you need to shave your head"
And she charged me $40 to do it.
She knew I was never going to come back, but unlike every other hair person I had seen, she actually told me what was best for me. Now I have no hair, and I am happier and sexier because of it.
Thank you Shannon!
Going into Hair of the Gods is like going to a meditation retreat, but without weird barefoot people, chanting, and mispronounced Sanskrit.
There are little deities and figurines and artwork everywhere, like your crazy grandma's attic, but factor in 80s music, good magazines, trees, fish, and all kinds of other amazements.
I get my hair cut from Betsey, and I loooove her. The woman has spunk.
If Shiva ever wanted to trim his dreads, he would come here.
This review is for Anyssa J, who was a color specialist/stylist at Hair of the Gods. I hear that she has recently moved to LA, but I wanted to send some love her way. I met Anyssa a couple years ago, while doing a quick fashion show for Dark Garden at Cow Palace during the Exotic Erotic show. I just happened to mention that I was in need of some color for my plumage and she was kind enough to give me her card.
I set up an appointment and she was definitely what I needed at the time. She sat down with me to discuss what I wanted and made some colorful suggestions, but I'm a bit bashful and wanted a toned down version of her vision. She quite deft and skillful and once I was finished, I had some gorgeous red locks. Pricing was pretty standard, so at least I didn't have to harvest my own kidney to pay for it.
The shop itself was a gorgeous collection of oddities and I felt very comfortable which is always conducive to a great hair experience. After all, it's hard to relax in a place that is completely sterile and minimalist, but maybe that's just me.
Total, TLC. Thanks to John Nick.
My hair was in a seriously unflattering spanish moss-like damaged state when I strayed from the street into their hair sanctuary. John & Geno gently assessed my damaged state and came up with a simple but well-thought out strategy to rehabilitate me.
Under John's expert care I am a sleek & chic redhead again. He actually understood what I wanted and created a great look. This seems to be a rare quality out there. Thanks hugely very much!!!
