I've been to Hair Mates twice now, both times I've seen Tyler; he is awesome.

The first time, I came in looking for a trim and a bit of style -- my hair had been growing out for about a year, and was looking pretty shaggy. He listened to what I said about both what I was looking for and what my usual hair routine was, and gave me a gorgeous and low-maintenance cut with some nice layers and a ton of body. No fancy products were needed to maintain it, and the shape has held beautifully.

The second time was to have my hair dyed. I was bored with my color and wanted to try something new. I initially wanted to go a few shades darker. Tyler again listened to what I was saying, really looked at my skin tone and eye color and then steered me calmly in a better direction. He was really patient about the mistake generated by an omission on my part, and we wound up going with a color that looks rich, warm and natural.

After a couple of years of bad experiences elsewhere, I'm happy to have a stylist I can rely on. I would recommend Hair Mates in general and Tyler in particular to anyone who asked.

Okay so I changed my mind from my last review and decided after a while I had paid $45+tip for a gullet (girl mullet). When I finally couldn't take putting it up in a ponytail anymore, and with the simple knowledge weighing on me everyday that I HAD A MULLET, I went back. I know, I know... mullet me once, shame on you, mullet me twice, whatever.

So once I get there I find out that that particular hairstylist now works at the Midtown location. That's fine by me! She was sweet but I can't put my hair in harm's way again. Mitsuru steps up and we start talking about traveling, food and motorcycles. He starts to regale me with stories of the huge fish he caught deep-sea fishing off Cape Cod, of riding with some motorcycle gang through the mountains of New Jersey (which is scarier, the gang or Jersey?) and before I know it my hair is recognizable again... healthy, layered but not shaggy, bouncy, and most definitely not a mullet.

This time, $55+tip but so damn worth it.

My first experience was alright. I had my hair done by Olga, and based on some reviews she doesn't seem to be a favorite. I think despite her shortcomings, yes okay, I admit she didn't do EXACTLY what I want (And I've had my haircut done for cheaper and not require the work of two blow dryers and two flattening irons, done by two people. Do I really have that much hair?) but for 45 dollars, she gave me a good cut. I admit I came in with one WILD mane and had it straightened to cute perfection. Can't complain that outcome was bad.

I would be willing to recommend this place to someone looking for a simple cut, they will give you exactly what you want and them some. But for something edgy I'm not so sure. I might actually come back again, that's how torn I am, since I will admit I had a great, pleasant experience and I've heard some of the Japanese Stylists are truly perfectionists at their craft.  I've heard of other places such as Sei Tomoko that does pretty good edgy cuts (actually I've heard people complain their cuts are TOO edgy, might just work out fine for me) So if you're very particular about your cut, I would request someone experienced, but if you're looking for someone to give you a nice cute workable cut, I recommend Hairmates.

BTW - to the Chick ranting about hairstylists ruining her V shaped cut, I actually came in with straight layers and was given a V shaped look in the back. Mhmm, maybe it's just luck...

Great Hair salon. Great prices and your a dumb-ass if you don't use Yun. This is not a fancy salon but a place with very friendly, caring and intelligent people who are cool and give great haircuts. Just go.

I guess I got that all wrong... It was Yun who used to cut my hair, not my roommate's. Imagine my surprise when she remembered me years later?
I'm a long haired gal & I'm not looking for much change. I like my bangs cut the same way, always. Yun understands this. She gets it. It's my look & I'm sticking with it. I don't want a scissor happy stylist that wants to show off a new look on my head! I will never leave her chair again.

I try to come here once every semester though I should stop by more often for my regular trim. I was so glad when I found out about this salon from my friend last year. The price is reasonable but you have to pay in cash, so stop by the atm before you enter. I usually prefer going to korean salons but they're so ridic expensive so I decided to try this place and I LOVED IT.
I usually get my cut from Kozue, who's a really sweet person.

I hate getting haircuts.  I'm too fidgety and I don't like magazines.  But twice a year when I can no longer ignore my increasingly unruly hair I go to Hair Mates near St. Marks.

I have really straight hair.  Kozue has been cutting it for a few years now and she is fantastic.  I always love whatever she does with my hair.  It grows out amazingly and is low maintenance while still looking good.  She knows that I don't do much in the way of styling day to day so she doesn't do the typical salon after-cut, multi-product styling thing that drives me nuts because I can never replicate it.

Oh, also they always do a pleasant little head massage when they're washing your hair.

Good place.  Cash only.

It's an affordable haircut.  Nothing fancy.  I thought it'd be really good, but eh, it's ok.  What I didn't like was how hot it was in there.  It's summer, hot air dryers blowing, combine with bright lights, not even any fans.  Really?  I say if you're looking for nothing fancy, just go to a barber and save half off.  There won't be any ac there either, but at least it's a lot cheaper.

i come here because they have great asian hair stylists, who understand and know how to cut asian hair.  i have been going here for about a year now, and kino has cut my hair around 5 times.  to be honest, my hair is thick and grows like a weed, but kino knows how to thin it out so i don't have to get it cut again for months if i wanted.  ALSO, he has never given me an asian mullet.

my only negative about this place is that it's cash only.

I only now see my stylist for treatments and I no longer let him cut my hair.

I think he's over me and over my demands and high standards.

I can't help it I know what I want and I don't want some idiot, Lucy to finish my blow dry who has no idea how to blow dry my hair or anyone's hair for that matter.

I am sorry but whatever school Lucy went to didn't school her enough or she didn't pay attention.

When you want to achieve volume, you don't try to blow someone's hair with a 1/2" round brush!

I miss the days when my guy would finish my blow dry.  I am not a fan of an assembly line, if I was I would still go to Bumble and Bumble.

I'm not a New Yorker and came here on recommendation by my sister (who is) and our friends. Hailing from LA I've yet to find a place I've been truly ecstatic about getting my hair cut so I'm pretty much a skeptic at this point.

I scheduled the appointment the morning of, as I was leaving town that evening. I got a mid-afternoon appointment and went in and got Denise. Now having incredibly thick, slightly wavy Asian hair, I was interested in going to a predominantly Asian salon. However, I have to say I was a little dismayed that Denise was not Asian. But in the end, she did an excellent job and it may very well be the best haircut I've gotten.

Time and care were taken and I let her pretty much decide what to do with my hair. She was a little surprised when I said I was an architect and she was afraid that what she had done was too "funky" but I was totally into it. It's been a solid 3 weeks and my hair still looks great. I love whenever anyone takes the time to rinse my hair out at the end so I don't end up shedding all over anything I come in close proximity to.

Only caveat is that I live in LA. But now I have another excuse to visit more often. $40 for cut and shampoo. Definitely a good deal and I'll be making sure I come back next time I'm in town.

The person that cut my hair unfortunately was that kind of hair stylist that wouldn't cut my hair the way I wanted it, even though I had it before and showed her a photo of it.  I called to get it redone but the downside of that is one could only get it fixed for free if it's done by the person who initially cut it.  After I arrived, I found out there was a mix-up in appointments plus the hair stylist walked by me, ignoring me and leaving the receptionists to sort it out.  By that time I was fed up and walked out, going to a nearby Supercuts and getting it fixed.  I'm sure all the other hair stylists are great but I wouldn't recommend getting a haircut by Lupe.

In response to Min H, pretty much everything he said is true.

I used to go to Hairmates and get it cut by Kino. His cuts were "alright", but they always start the next client before they finish yours.

When my cut was finished, I went to get it washed by some lady. After she dried my hair and seated me, she began applying the wax/hair products onto my hair while Kino was talking to the next client.

Obviously the girl applying products onto my hair didn't know what she was doing, cause she doesn't know what kind of cut I even asked for.

Once Kino saw her trying to wax my hair in confusion, he took over and did it.

Would I recommend people to Hairmates? I doubt it.

I been going here for......years! Same stylist, changing prices - but same stylist = consistancy.  I'm not gonna exploit my stylist so everyone of you readers will have the same cut as me - I don't need twins, triplets, quadupulets of me - it'll be total anarchy!

Anyway, the prices are different depending on your length.  Long hair cost $50, then $45, $40.  They charge me $50.00 + tips to stylist and clueless shampoo girls. I been to salons when I couldn't get to Hairmates and they do a horrible job on asian hair.  Some stylist use razors - not too fond of that look.  Layers shouldn't fray and look like feathers (my opinion). I prefer the good old scissor and some skill.

I'd give this 5 stars if they accept my platinum american express *jk* - aka credit cards - run to the ATM because they only accept cash and appointments is a MUST.

$12 pre-tip is pretty good for a bang trim.  My stylist seems to understand that it's almost as important as a full haircut because we've all been in a depressing place where growing out stubby bangs is an embarrassing exercise on patience.

I've been coming here for 2 years now to the same stylist (Yun) b/c she remembers what we did last time, what I do and don't like and what would look best on me.  She's honest and tells me when my idea isn't such a bright one.  It's a tad pricey but I'll pay it to know I'm getting a good haircut.  I can see how the language barrier could be a problem but they have a ton of magazines to look thru to find your next do (there's another waiting bench down the steps that tends to have more mags).

Cash only, folks.

Their hairstylists are great. However, the only thing that might prevent you from having the hairstyles you want is the language barrier between you and them. Many of the hairstylists do not speak enough English. I've gotten around this by showing them pictures of what I want. By doing so, they understand what I want and get the job done.

I've been a customer for years and I recommend:

Jin: She only cuts Men haircuts. She speaks sufficient English.
Jun: She is great on both Men&Women haircuts but, I personally think heir Women cuts are better. She speaks fluent English so there shouldn't be any worry.

If you're a bit daring, Try:

Tomo: His English isn't the best, but his cuts are great.
Ryohei: He's a new hairstylist, and speaks zero English but a true hairstylist.

I speak Japanese so I have never had a problem but.. for those that don't, be warned.

only salon i've been to where i've gotten a haircut and every month thereafter it still looks fresh and people think i've recut it!  it's been over 6 months now too!  I am asian, these people are asian, they know how to layer hair so that it grows out nice.

some of these stylists don't speak much english but if u show them a picture of what you want they definitely do a good job of replicating it.

there are some cutters that cut more conservatively than others.  meaning when you come out you might look like you didn't get a haircut at all.  you kinda have to try diff ones to see which one suits ur tastes more.

if u want someone who speaks english and will have conversations with u then book with yun... if u want someone to spend a lot of time on ur hair don't go for someone so popular thats mentioned all the time on this forum.  sorry but not revealing my stylist as i think he's my favorite!  my highlights have grown out but the way he did it it looks very natural still.  And my hair doesn't feel ruined either!  As for my haircut it was edgy and sharp just like i wanted!

cash only... call ahead to book appointments!  downtown location is slightly cheaper than midtown location... heard that if u get promoted though as a stylist u move to the midtown location... not sure if that is a rumor or not...

When I get a haircut, I'm more concerned with the final result than with how chic the place or people are.  That said: I've been here 3 times and never had a cut I didn't like.  I have BIG, unruly curly hair and it's hard to find someone who a) knows how to deal with it, and b) understands what I ask for (I, um, have very specific ideas).  I've had 3 different people do the job (and excellent luck getting same-day walk-in appointments), and each and every time they gave me EXACTLY what I asked for.  The last time I was there I was even lucky enough to get a half-price cut because it was the girl's first day.

(For the record, the place and people are relatively chic).

Loss of 1 star = cash-only.  But other than that, highly highly recommended.

Read through all the Yelp reviews and called to set up an appointment. They were able to get me in same day. My head is shaped vaguely like an egg. I have a colony of cowlicks. I have typical wavy white guy hair. I spent $40 (before tip) and feel better about this haircut than any I have gotten in a salon before.

The place is completely unpretentious. I mean, seriously, their radio station of choice played a g**dam Glen Frey song. My stylist was named Olga... a Ukrainian woman who commented how funny it was that a Ukrainian was cutting an Irish guy's hair in an Asian salon. She was warm and friendly and totally knew what she was doing. This is the first time I've ever had my hair cut in a place that washed it before hand and then washed it afterwards, just to get all the leftover hairs off my scalp.

Thank you Yelpers. This is now totally my regular salon.

I say 5 stars! Here's my review...
I found this place on yelp... I was visiting NYC for Spring Break a week ago and wanted to get my haircut... I have naturally wavey asian hair.
Yuzo was my hair stylist and he did a great job! I knew I wanted it shorter and layered and with side bangs... we talked about it for a couple minutes and he transformed my hair under an hour. He spent alot of time making it pretty... to only have it blown away as soon as I stepped out, due to the bad weather... but atleast I got to enjoy it for a minute. My haircut was $45 without tip. Cheapest haircut yet! I asked him about his hair history and he told me he just moved from Tokyo in November and he was cutting hair there for 7-8 years. So he's pretty experienced. We talked a little bit here and there about NY, HI and TOKYO but for the most part he was consentrating on my hair. He shampooed my hair and used several types of scissors on my hair and took his time. If i ever go back to NYC, I'll probably make it a must to go back and have him have fun with my hair again. I used to subway to get there and the walk wasn't that long from the station... so no problems with finding the location... theres BIG words saying HAIRCUT on the outside... Yay for Hairmates!

P.S. check out my picture I posted of me and Yuzo with my new haircut! :0)

This place was recommended by a friends, so I figured I'll give it shot.

The best part: the price.  It's so hard to find a salon with Japanese staff (who knows how to treat Asian hair), at a decent price.
For ladies, $45 for wash, cut & dry!  I haven't seen a price like that else where.

Maybe I went there with too much of an expectation though.
(considering the fact that the last time before this hair cut, I got my hair cut in Japan, where they totally know about how to handle Asian hair styles).
I wasn't going for some crazy, trendy hair style, but the outcome was normal.  Yes, I didn't want to cut much since I wanted to grow it out some more, but maybe SOME change??  It was thinned well, which was a key factor for the amount of hair I have, but hmm... just.... normal.

The staff was nice.  There was a person who shampooed my hair, and another who sat me down before the shampooing to see what kind of style I wanted, then went on to cut my hair after the wash.

This may be my personal opinion, but I like it when they chat with you.
The hairstylist I had really didn't talk much.  It wasn't that he was unpleasant or anything though... just too quiet!!

But for those of you who don't want to pay much more for a hair cut, and still get a decent one, you should give this place a try.

I've been doing some street-sweeping of the body and soul and realized I desperately needed a change.
When I was 5 years old, I'd just get new friends.
When I was 12 years old, I'd change pop singer idols.
When I was 15 years old, I would pierce my ears more.
And when I was in my 20's I would color my hair... until of course, the Peppy Le Pew skunk hair incident.

Now in my (ahem... cough, cough) 30's, I cut my hair. So on a whim, and with the blessing of a 4.5 star yelp review, I got a same day appt. at Hairmates and let them chop my hair. Naoki seemed a bit hesitant to chop all of my hair off, so we went chin length and he bobbed and weaved and combed and cut with my hair wet and dry. He definitely understood the pitfalls of straight, fine Asian hair and didn't try to razor or layer my hair. Just a simple cut, lots of precision and a simple blow out that made my hair look shiny... for only $45 (cash only kids!). It was way cheaper than therapy and good for spring-cleaning of the body.

Now if only I could spring clean my apartment...

Let just start off by saying that I love the Japanese stylists at this place, and I would give them 4 starts or more. I have been a loyal customer for over 2 years and have recommended my best friend to go there. And now she is a loyal customer as well.

HOWEVER, the reason for my 3 stars is due to the fact that now they have non-Japanese hair stylists!!! I just had the WORST HAIRCUT of my life with this Russian girl a couple of days ago. I have had $13 haircuts better than this. Don't get me wrong, she was stylish, young, and very friendly, so I thought, what the heck, maybe she was trained in Japan and knows how to cut Asian hair. I am adventurous with my hair. So I gave her a chance.

I really should have said something, but I kept on expecting things to get better, but it never did. It was like watching a train wreck in slow motion. The reason I ALWAYS go to Japanese hair salons is because they cut hair differently than other stylists. I have had $200 haircuts at upscale non-Japanese salons many times, and been disappointed many times. But I find Japanese hair stylists very knowledgeable on how to actually CUT your hair not just to style it into something fancy that you can never replicate at home.

I wish Hair Mates would stick with their wonderful Japanese stylists. Or at least train the non-Japanese people well so they know how to cut hair.

I will go back to Hair Mates again, but I will ABSOLUTELY make sure I ask for a Japanese stylist. No offense to anyone, but I HATE my new hair cut so much, I am ashamed to go out.

for those of you complaining about the place...  it's about the stylist, not the salon.  get it right!  anyhow, i've had my share of celebrity stylists in several major cities, and most are just too self-absorbed to actually listen to what you want.  it seems to be the downfall of many stylists.  however, i just wanted to mention that Olga has done an amazing job in perfecting my style as one of very few stylist with the skills needed to make it possible.  i can see that she's everyone else's fav on yelp too :)

For shaggy layered haircuts that look good on day 1 and look even better after months of growing it out, go to Hair Mates.

Hair Mates Pros:
- Hair looks natural the first day
- Hair looks better and better once it grows out
- They take a really long time cutting hair, like they're doing brain surgery. Very caring, very detailed, very friendly stylists.
- Get your bangs cut for 10 bucks

Hair Mates cons:
- Cash only
- Lately they've been getting real busy. always a wait. (sign of good business)
- Never tried the non-shaggy hair do here. Not sure if i want to.
- Once in a while you get stuck with a stylist who doesn't get it right. Note their names and avoid.
- Sometimes they thin out your hair too much. (This might be good for people with thicker hair)

I love Hair Mates! I'm Asian with really stiff and thick Asian hair, so I have to find a place where they know how to cut Asian hair. I discovered Hair Mates through Yelp, and got my first appointment with this Ukrainian (I think she's Ukrainian but she might be Russian... I forgot) girl called Olga. Olga gave me the best haircut I've ever had at the best price ever! I'm usually disappointed by haircuts and it's very rare that I like my hair cut right after, but I love Olga's cut from day one. This place is a little noisy, but like what many reviewers said, it's very unpretentious.

Thanks to all 32 reviews on Yelp, I was convinced that Hair Mates was probably my best bet to get a much needed style upheaval. So I made an appointment with Veronica and within 2 days, found myself at their doorstep ready for a change. (Alright, it's only a haircut but I've outgrown my previous cut so much that I almost considered pulling a Britney shave)

Perhaps I've been spoiled in my past experiences at salons, but the hairwash here was disappointing. No such scalp massage as mentioned in some reviews. But I digress, after all, I'm here for the cut! I'll get a great wash and blowdry in Chinatown complete with a scalp & shoulder massage another day. Finally seated in Veronica's chair, I showed her a picture of my best, most-complimented-haircut-ever (oddly enough, cut by a Caucasian in my college town. Go figure!) and eagerly dug into the magazines laid out in front of me. About 20 minutes and a blowdry later, I was looking at the new me. It was pretty. Almost there...but not exactly.

So am I pleased with it? Overall, yes. Do I think it's THE gorgeous-life-changing cut like my aforementioned? Sadly, no. Was it $50 well spent? I'm not sure. The bottom of of my hair was thinned a little too much and the volume that I wanted (and explained how it was previously achieved) was lacking.

1 week later:
This isn't a wash and go cut for me. Because my hair is somewhat wavy, it needs to be coaxed with products and a blowdry. The volume I was going for has not appeared, and manipulation is definitely needed. Once all that is done, I'm quite satisfied. Unfortunately, I'm not keen on having such a time consuming cut. I like it for now, but not enough to make me go back. My next trip to visit the shears will most likely be at Sei Tomoko (which was recommended by a fellow Yelper) and not Hair Mates. Oh well...the search for The One continues.

What I liked about this place: fast, not too expensive, next to a good bakery

What I didn't like: my stylist didn't speak a lot of English and so we did have some communication problems, boring cuts of uneven quality, actually not that cheap

I always go here when I don't have the energy or inspiration to try a new place.  It's okay, but I always leave feeling unsatisfied and vaguely frustrated.

I just moved back to NYC after having lived in the Bay Area for 8 years, so finding a reliable, affordable hair salon with Asians that know how to cut Asian hair in the Village was a must! Fortunately, a friend from work recommended Hair Mates to me after I came into work obviously sick of my long, limp hair (I hadn't cut it in many many months). I was able to make a same-day appointment, which I hear isn't hard to do here, despite its being very popular.

Tammy cut my hair and did an awesome job. I had no idea what I wanted, but my one ask was that she just chop it all off, and she did just that. I left with a dramatically new 'do (I can't even put my hair in a ponytail!) that was perfectly layered and meticulously cut.

Wash, cut, blow = $50 + tip

Tip: HM only accepts cash, so make sure to stop by the ATM before getting your cut.

I didn't like my haircut but it probably would have helped if I had a picture or spoke Japanese.  The actual cutting of my hair was interesting.  I have very thick hair and somehow it's been thinned out so much it feels like I have half the hair I used to but I'm not exactly sure how.  The stylist only used scissors but still managed to get the razored look.

I might go back because I think the stylist is quite skilled and it's cheap but I'll bring a picture next time.

So this review is going to be a bit skewed due to the fact that I was able to get my hair cut for free by having a student do it; nonetheless, this place is great.

The staff was helpful and did everything they could to ensure I was happy with the results. The salon itself is conveniently located and their normal pricing isn't too obscene. I will definitely be going back. Ask for Lucy - she did a nice job for me.

First off, I have thick hair that is slightly curly. So I can blow-dry it for fear of having lion's hair. So Im very cautious on which hair salon I go to.
Only at Hair Mates, I can rest at ease.
They take one look at your hair, touch it, and voila! they can cut your hair in a cute and trendy style. I was wowed by what they did to my hair. They have several haircutters so you don't have to wait too long.
Quick and efficient, they'll do a fine job to your hair. If your looking for a cool haircut, this is the place to go.

{NOTE:  this is the same review as the one for Hair Mates Midtown}

The long and the short of it:

Price:  $40-$45 (cut, wash and dry for ladies)
Service:  Great!
Results:  Love them, love them, love them!
Would I go there again?:  Fo' Sheezy - I am willing to wait until my once-in-awhile cross-country trips to NY to get my hair cut from them

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Details:
Hair Mates Midtown and the one in Astor Place were my fave salons to get my hair cut in Manhattan.  Unfortunately, I've since moved back to SF but until recently, I would wait until I visited NY to get a haircut at Hair Mates.
I'm not Japanese and don't speak Japanese, but was able to communicate fine with the stylists each time (I didn't have a regular stylist - everytime I went in, it seemed like the last one I had moved back to Japan).  I would just say something along the lines of "shorter, with some layers", the stylist would fiddle with my hair and study it for a few seconds then presto-change-o, a shampoo, cut, and 20-min blow-dry later I would have this superstar (at least for my low-maintenance standards) haircut that was better than I could have ever described, even if I did know Japanese.
The haircut (plus wash and dry), if I remember correctly, was about $40-$45 for ladies, which is pretty good in Manhattan.  I seemed to remember my haircut being about $5 cheaper at the Astor Place location, although it could have been due to different stylists and not the different locations.
I would highly recommend making an appointment as their facilities are small and in demand.  And the last time I was there, it was cash only.  Although I've recently found my "go-to" salon in SF, I will still plan on making a trip to Hair Mates if I know I'm going to be in NY.
I've paid for haircuts about twice in the past 3 years.  My last haircut was a debacle and 6 months had passed by the time I got my ass into Hair Mates.
Mayuko cut my hair.  All 30,000 of them.  Individually.
The entire process took 50 minutes and cost $40.  This was both the longest and most expensive haircut of my life.  I tipped her $20 cause she deserved it and because I had no idea how tips worked at these salons.
If paying $40 for a haircut doesn't faze you and you are Asian, then by all means go to Hair Mates.  I will definitely seek Mayuko next year when I get another cut.
