17 reviews for Hair Color Salon
Though I was happy with my previous hair stylist, I felt like my hair needed a new color approach. So, I did a Google search for "Hair color specialist in San Jose" and up popped Hair Color Salon. After reading through all of the reviews I decided to call Anh to give it a try.
The appointment was a long one, longer than I expected. This is because I have never had a proper color consultation before. Anh pulled out books of color swaths, hair samples, etc. to get the base color and the highlights just right for me. After the color and cut she then showed me a unique way to blow dry my hair to give it more volume.
The result: I absolutely love the color, highlights, and cut. One of my friends told me she loves the color (unprompted) and that it's the best she's ever seen it. Then she asked me where I went so that she could go there too!
Average, at best.
Quote phone price was different than what was charged.
Quoted appointment was incorrect; I ended up being thirty minutes "early" and the owner felt that she had to rush through the client she was working on.
Employees speak negatively about clients in VIetnamese. For example, "oops, her highlights are too light...hahaha."
Cut was forgettable.
An acquaintance had highlights here, and they looked terrible. That, and just a few weeks afterwards, they started to fade immensely.
Not for me.
So I just looked at Hair Color Salon's web page and they give a FREE hair cut if you write a yelp review! HOW COOL IS THAT? I get a free hair cut for something I did anyways. They are also offing a promotion rate of $55 on a 45 min European facial and a 25 min stress relief massage. I am so there!

For my birthday I went to get my hair done at Hair Color Salon. The place was clean and the owner,… Read more »
I have been dealing with unruly curly hair my whole life and finally got fed up with my time-consuming blow drying and straightening routine, so I decided it was time for a change.
After extensive research trying to find a place that did Japanese hair straightening (thermal reconditioning) services, I decided on this salon. They use the Yuko system - the original, best brand for this process. I went in for a consultation and Anh explained to me the results I could expect and also showed me before and after photos of some of her clients that have had their hair straightened. Everything looked promising, so I made my appointment with Anh.
The five hour process actually flew by. The staff did a great job of keeping my comfortable. Anh thoroughly explained each of the steps to me and even ordered me lunch from the restaurant next door. =0)
I am very happy with the results so far. The service was expensive, but worth it.
The real test will be after I wash it for the first time, after 24hrs. (I'll add to this review to say how it went.)
***UPDATE***
I have lowered my rating to two stars. After washing my hair and letting it air dry, everything came out fine except one section in the back. I was very disappointed because I had done everything I was told in order to get ideal results. I didn't allow my hair to come into contact with any moisture for 48 hours, or change the shape in any way with hair ties, leaning on chairs, etc. I wouldn't even let anyone roll down the windows in the car afterward for fear it would mess up the pricey service.
I went back to Anh to see if she could fix it. She gave me excuse after excuse as to what could have happened - accusing me of wearing a hooded jacket that may have left my hair kinked, squishing my hair against a chair, etc. She then blamed it on the fact that the back of my shirt was wet after they washed it and that I must have let my hair touch my wet shirt. I explained to her that I was extremely careful and did not do any of these things. She simply put me off saying that there was nothing wrong with her process and all I had to do was flat iron it to fix it.
Having to flat iron my hair is exactly what I was trying to avoid by getting my hair straightened. My hair is far from the "wash and go style" she guaranteed me. I'm disappointed.
***UPDATE***
It is now 2 YEARS later. I went to a reputable salon to try and get thermal reconditioning again. My hair is still so jacked from the breakage I experienced during the first one, that they cannot even do it. Hair Color Salon lied to me and told me that thermal reconditioning does not damage hair because it uses conditioners. WHEN IN FACT IT SEVERELY STRIPS PROTEIN FROM HAIR AND MUST BE DONE BY PROFESSIONALS. The people at Hair Color Salon are far from professionals. They did not even do a strand test on my hair to see how it would respond to the CHEMICALS.
The one star rating isn't necessarily for the entire salon, but for the one cosmetologist that I dealt with. I came in as a "walk-in" on my lunch break. A lady named Leslie B. said that she would be able to cut my hair but had an appt in 30 mins. I said that I didn't need a wash or a style, so it would be fine.
It was her first day at this salon since the one she previously worked at was shut down. She was a little abrupt and not very warm/friendly, but I assumed it was just because it was her first day at the new place and she was trying to get settled in, etc. Anyhow, nothing against her personally because I don't know her well enough, but here is where the ONE star comes in. When I went to leave, I asked how much the trim would be. Let me make a note that my hair is long, straight and ALL I needed (and all she did) was a TRIM! 1.5 inches, if that. She charged me $55!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For a freakin' trim. I was so taken aback that I just paid that amount and was even asked for a tip (not by leslie but by another associate that helped run my debit card through). So, after the tip (ok.. I gave a shitty tip) it was $60!
I was very upset and should have said something. It was unethical for her to charge me FULL price when she didn't even wash or style my hair. Anyhow, it gets better. So, the next morning I am blow drying my hair and the ends aren't even straight... the hair is just cut straight across and choppy. I called her back and she apologized and said that it was probably because she didn't wash my hair and cut it dry. WTF!!!!!!!!! She offered to fix it and I made an appt to return.
I was unable to make the appt and tried calling her to let her know... no answer. I actually was going to tell her to nevermind the appointment at all that I would NEVER return.
I called up Friday afternoon, and got an appointment the same day for a haircut. Danny talked me into a few highlights as well, and within two hours I had an amazing hair style with perfectly natural-looking highlights. I love it. Really good service, friendly stylists, central location, I have nothing bad to say at all. They don't take personal checks, but credit cards are accepted.
This unassuming storefront houses great talent. I came to Anh the day after getting possibly the worst haircut imaginable. Anh was able to do an excellent rescue job and has been cutting my hair since. As she is the proprietress, her attention is in high demand: expect her to get called away. But don't let it put you off, she has done beautiful work with my hard to manage hair. Definitely make an appointment, and if you can manage to go on a weekday, it's much less crowded.
I was looking for a new place to get my hair done. I called this place because it was close to my work and met with Vivian to get my hair done. She did an excellent job! She looked at my hair and took into account the condition (dry and I had some breakages) before she did anything to my hair. We discussed my options and she went through some pictures with me. She did a great job with the cut and color! I got so many compliments on my hair the next day =) She did a great job with the color using lowlights and highlights. The only reason I didn't give her five stars was she was a bit pricey.... but you get what you pay for!
****February 2007*** update
So I haven't cut my hair since the last time Vivian cut it in November 2006. She did such a great job, it still maintained the original shape and cut.. just longer now. I am still getting compliments on my hair cut & style! Totally worth it.. updating my rating to a 5 star.
I found that the same problem i had previously happened again. I went in to talk to the Salon owner and she agreed that i should come back in a few months after the crease has grown out so that they could fix the area. She also agreed that she would do it free of charge but that if the problem were to persist that i would have to pay- I thought this was a very reasonable agreement. they were all very nice and polite and seemed genuinely confused about what was going on with my hair...hopefully once it moves away from the root the crease will not return.

I went here after a REALLY blotched hair straightening job i had done at a salon in SF. My hair was… Read more »
I was referred to Vivian by another hair stylist because he had booked me for the wrong date and had offered to find me someone else. I wanted my hair done special for a wedding, hopefully in an updo or just something to make it look different and nicer. I was really disappointed.
It was an awful experience. Vivian complained about my Jessica McClintock dress the whole time, saying it was old-fashioned, and thought that my dress should be more modern and trendier for my young age. She was expecting something more modern and said she would have only worn my dress if she were stuck going to a wedding with her parents. I'll admit that the Jessica McClintock style might not be trendy to her, but I would think it was ok for a client to have a preference for styles different from her taste. Besides, I've received quite some compliments for this dress which I've worn before that I thought I would like to wear it again.
She was so frustrated with my dress that she couldn't do my hair (at least that was the excuse she seemed to give), saying the only look that was suitable was plain straight hair. So I said if she really believes that, then just do that for me, and give me more volume. She did some backcombing to give me volume, but that smoothed out immediately. The only thing nice was that my hair looked smooth. I pretty much looked like I do on a normal day. A real stylist should be able to give you volume in your hair and for backcombing to smooth out immediately, I really question her skills.
We also experimented with makeup which was a big failure. She said she liked using browns on her models, but I asked if she was sure, because from past experience, brown didn't look good on my fair Asian skin tone. She did it anyways and then decisively said she didn't like it on me, because it just wouldn't work with my dress! I wasn't wearing my dress but had on a white button shirt at the time. I don't think it would have looked good on me in any case. She acted so frustrated and gave up on the makeup and so I said we should skip it.
Basically it felt like she blamed my dress for everything that didn't work. She said she based her designs on the clothes and is able to work on her models based on the clothes they choose. Since she complained so much about my dress not being in style, I thought I'd be open and asked her what was the current trend. She couldn't give me details, but said she saw a couple of nice ones from Bebe's. Perhaps if I wanted go for more low-cut sexier styles, but not everyone has that preference.
From the very few pictures she had on her laptop to show me, she only had done 4-5 girls. Most were of one Vietnamese girl with blondish/brownish hair coloring. I'll admit that if you're one of those types of Vietnamese girls who like that blondish/brown dye look, then perhaps she could do a good job on your coloring. Other than that, the only other styles she showed me were:
1 Hispanic girl whose hair she did by pulling the top half to the back and pinning it or tying it into a half ponytail
1 Vietnamese girl with black hair which had the top half also pulled back and pinned but maybe the hair curled for the bottom half.
1 pic of the blondish/brown Vietnamese girl with all curls and the rest were pics of her with different layered modern cuts.
She charged me $35 with a loud sigh, but I was generous and gave her $6 tip. $35 is their lowest price for a style from what I remember.
I regret this as I realize my hair looked like it normally does and I had been way too nice to her despite all her criticisms and negativity.
A professional should be able to cater to different styles. She can only cater to the Vietnamese clubbing girl look with the dyed blondish/brown hair and a taste for Bebe style dresses. Other than that she seems to only know how to make your hair straight or pull it back and pin it, maybe with curls at most.
So I just had a baby and I have not gotten a facial since my wedding so I was due. A friend of mine had gone to see Shirley at the Hair Color Salon and said she was great, so I made an appointment for today. I just got back and before I even kiss my baby hello I wanted to get on here and share my experience. Shirley was very professional and told me exactly what her game plan was (which I love, other people always just jump in and then you have to guess at what they are putting on your skin). To start with she scanned my face for any sun damage and to see where there was oil deposits or dehydration. It was really different because most estheticians don't know how to diagnose problem areas. Then she gave me a customized 90 minute complete facial, with everything from exfoliation to extraction to masque to massage. I was in heaven! And unlike other facials I have received my face was not red at all after the facial, but glowing! Shirley is amazing at her job and I will definitely be coming back regularly! Also a note - they validate parking for the lot around the corner at Market and Santa Clara, so the downtown no parking thing is no problem.
This place gets 4 stars for the convenient locale. it's close to work and i can run here for a haircut during lunch. Vivian is really nice and friendly. I really liked the wanna-be faux hawk she gave me. My only complaint about this place is I wish I had a longer scalp massage. You can park in the city lot next to Sonoma Chicken and get parking validation.
I have never been to this salon but I've always pass by it so I figure since it is my birthday soon I would try this place out to get a new hairdo. I like my new haircut but I dont really like the highlight that my hairstylist Sean suggested. Sean wasnt very talkative and at time very sarcastic. However, if you are not there for the company and just want a great new haircut, then you shold come to him. He takes his time to cut it and pay attention to detail.
pros: attentive professional hairstylist
con: parking
reccommend: yes, if you don't mind the overprice compare to similar salon in the area
What a joke!!! They reward people who write positive reviews with $50 off next visit. I went in for a touch up of my all over color with Vivian, after reading some great reviews. We had a "miscommunication" she says, when I came out with black hair instead of my light brown. She added highlights (I thought lowlights but you wouldn't have known. Anyway, I had a $15 discount voucher - but the price was still $185!!!! The color was horrific. I went back next day (first time I have done that in 20 years of coloring) , when she stripped the color and, despite me saying get the color off now, it was a lovely brassy yellow. Does she even have any qualifications?
Vivian is awesome! I was referred to her by my sister-in-law and was not disappointed. I have black hair, and every place I seem to go to says that my hair will not turn ash blonde. They say that they can only get me to a more yellow shade of blonde. I don't like that at all! When I saw Vivian, she showed me a bunch of pictures of her work on her laptop. This was really cool because I was able to see what she's actually done (before & afters, great color, and even her Japanese straightening skills). I talked with her in great detail about what i wanted: Full highlights in ash blonde or a caramel shade. She said she'd be able to do it. After quite some time (about 3.5 hours), my hair came out excellent. Exactly what I wanted! Ash blonde....not yellow! It come out to $180 including a $20 tip. Minus 1 star because of the price. My hair's a little past my shoulder and I didn't get a haircut, so it's a bit on the pricey side. I'll be back again though for sure. By the looks of the pictures I saw, she does some great cuts, too!
I've been to this salon twice, both times for a cut and highlights. I don't think I've ever had so many compliments before about my hair! I've been getting my hair highlighted for almost 10 years and have paid lots of $$ at high end salons, but Anh at Hair Color Salon really is one of the best!
I hadn't colored my hair in 2 years and I was ready for a big change. My natural color is a dark blond, and I decided I wanted to go light golden blond. I brought in a few photos. Ahn, the owner & "Master Stylist" suggested I get to that color via highlights. I questioned her saying "I can get that blond through just highlights??" and she confidently replied "yes". I made it clear that I did not want to be "stripy". A few hours later, I was nice and STRIPY and my hair had a pinkish tinge. I said I wasn't too happy, but submitted and said I'll give it a few days. I paid $120. About 9 days later, I called and said I was not happy with my hair. She was very nice and said please come back so I can fix it. When I got back in there, I told her again that it was too stripy and pinkish. So, she decided to put an all over toner in and then apply a few more highlights. Now, it was grey! She cut it, too, talking about how she cuts long hair like mine very well. She butchered it! She put so many products in it that I looked like a stripy gray scare crow with nappy hair! I told her in firmer words this time that I was NOT happy at all. She charged me $120 again! I asked her how she could charge me again when she said she would fix it! She said she had to b/c this time she did an "all over color". I was so pissed I was speechless. I just cried all the way home. I am still bitter about it to this day. I am so paranoid to go anywhere to get my hair done for fear it will REALLY be fried. But, I went to Planet Hair in Sunnyvale to fix the cut and the guy commented on how crooked and horrible the shape was. I didn't even complain about it or tell him I was correcting the cut; he just noticed. He did a decent job. I still long to find a good colorist that knows how to compliment my skin tone.
