I went to Heather at Hair Candy for a simply cut and was not impressed.   She had zero imagination and lacked vision too.  I made the mistake of going back for a correction, (always a bad sign) and she continued to make a mess of things...  cut my hair too short and with both visits, I left the salon looking blah!

From here, the climb looks impossible.  I'm at the base of Mt. Hair Candy Reviews and the red and dark orange monstrosity towers into the air in front of me.  But, I'm wearing my good hiking boots, I've packed some granola, and my backpack is filled with Redken styling products.  And so I start.

The climb begins slowly through the Cozy Interior Pass.  There are vintage posters and funky sconces on the cliff faces and The Decemberists can be heard faintly in the distance.

An hour later things get tougher: Amazing Cuttin' Skillz Peak is a battle, as is Massaged Scalp Bluff and the Comfortable Conversation Gulch.  Luckily, I catch a break when the trail opens to a clearing and I stop for lunch near the Control Paste Pond.

And then the final ascent begins: The shear, dark red rock gleams with etchings by those climbers who came before me: "...best cut of my life..." "Elana works magic..." "Cheerful...fun...perfect."  And then at last I reach for the final star-shaped hold, pull myself up, and stand triumphantly at the summit.  I take a moment to admire the vista and see the yellow and dull orange hills of lessor salons laid out before me.

I open my backpack and gingerly remove the 5-star flag.  With my black Sharpie, I write on the back: "My search is over.  Thank you, Elana."  I plant the flag in the ground, take a moment to coif my well-textured do, and start the long walk back down.

I've been with Elana since her Transformer days.  It's been wonderful to see what she's accomplished, she is most definitely deserving of all the kudos and success.

Elana is a wizard with color and her cuts are just fabulous.  Most of the time my hair is in a ponytail and motorcycle helmet and I feel like I should apologize to her for being a poor advertisement.  However, whenever I am able to "look like a girl" I'm consistently amazed at how great she's made my hair look.  And oh my - the scalp massage she gives when she's shampoo'ing you - that alone is worth the visit.

So of course I'm going to give Hair Candy 5 stars.... I am one of the five stylist that do hair here.

I wanted to write this for a couple reasons.

1) Thank you to all of our clients! Your service and loyalty mean so much to us. Obviously the success of Hair Candy could not be possible without you.

2) There is some major confusion on here regarding CREDIT CARDS.
I'm happy to clear that up. We do have a credit card machine, but not all the stylist offer it as a way of payment. The two stylists that don't take credit cards take cash and check. The machine is also available when purchasing product.

To all of you looking for a new stylist, we look forward to working with you. The health of your hair and making your visit with us a happy experience is our goal!!!

Heather is a TOTAL rockstar!
I cannot even begin to sing her praises enough when it comes to dealing with the crazy, curly, frizzy mass that is the hair on my head. She took a classic/hideous triangular cut and turned it into a fabulous, multi-layered gorgeously styled masterpiece!
On top of that she is super nice and sweet and helpful. She was really informative when it came to products but didn't push anything on me that I didn't want.
In summary - if you are of the curly haired variety: GO SEE HEATHER!

Three times I've called this salon to make an appointment. Never did I get a live person--only voice mail.

When I finally did leave a message, asking for an appointment with one of the stylists, I never received a return call.

If this is how "Hair Candy" does business--with a complete lack of regard for potential customers, not to mention basic courtesy--then I have quite lost interest.

Update:

I finally called the salon, and left a message saying as much.  Oh, but THAT got a response.  The stylist I'd asked for left a voicemail message for me:

"I got your message, and I'm out of town, but you sound upset." (Upset? More like disgusted.) "You should know that we are all individual operators, and we don't have a receptionist." (Gee, maybe the outgoing message should indicate as much instead of trying to make it sound like there really is a receptionist.)  "And besides, I'm not taking any new clients." (Oh, now we learn the real reason for not bothering to call back.)

Sorry, still disgusted--even moreso. These cookies are charging top dollar for their services and they're too cheap to offer a more reliable communication system? They think that just because one of 'em goes out of town, that means the business doesn't exist and people don't deserve a call back?

Get some manners, girls. Pretty is as pretty does.

Elana is a goddess.  That is all there is to it.  I even flew back from the UK JUST TO HAVE HER CUT AND COLOR MY HAIR.  No joke.  I do not know what people are talking about as far bad service, etc-  Hair Candy is like a therapy session, beauty retreat and hanging with your best friend all rolled into one.  I am a stickler for customer care, and I have never received anything but hot hair 'dos that make me look and feel sassy, no matter how fat / bloated / gnarly I may feel, quick call backs (when I do get the rare voice mail), great products and a load of TLC.  I have the most "worked on" hair around-  curly, coarse, dyed to with in an inch of its life-  with out Elana, I would surely be bald!  LOVE YOU GIRL, and I am so proud of you and all the ladies of Hair Candy!

I've known Heather over 10 years. She is not only a good friend but also a fantastic colorist. My latest burgundy red dye job came out AMAZING! Her haircuts are fantastic as well. We're considering bangs in the near future and she's the only person I'd trust with that. It's a big step for me.

She's like a crack dealer with the extensions! "Here, I thought we might try just a few extensions in this color to see what you think..." Well YEAH!!! Before I know it I have an appointment to have a full head of fantastic extensions done! It's gonna look bitchin' for my wedding!

Yeah, I love my haircut.  It looks good sleek.  It looks good messy.  The products they carry smell f-ing fantabulous.

But enough about that.  I'm writing this review to let everyone know how totally cool Dionne is!  Seriously, though:  she's warm yet professional, super neat and super sweet, and really easy to talk to (or NOT talk to; I hate it when stylists make you feel like you need to discuss random shit with them when all you really want to do is just close your eyes and space out for a few minutes).  I liked her so much, I thought about asking her if she wanted to hang out sometime, but decided against it because, well, that would probably sound weird.  Hmm.

I can understand why there's so much confusion over whether or not Hair Candy accepts credit cards.  It's like this: the stylists only take cash, but the business itself will accept your plastic if you want to buy products.

LA rejected me because I'm not superficial enough so I came to the last place that might offer me peace AND quality: SF.  I left a fabulous stylist/colorist and began my search for a new one.  I went to salon after salon paying horribly obnoxious amounts of money because it was "the city" and I get highlights.  I got good colors but NOBODY custom tailored my color/cut to ME.  My last stylist had and I was afraid I'd never find another.

One and a half years later and I found my salon.  Theresa booked me and hooked me.  She sat me down and listened to my ideas, told me hers, and we tried something new and it ROCKS.  I've waited two weeks to write this review just to see how my hair would play out and it's singing a solo all on it's own.

If I was to make ANY criticisms (but NO star deductions because my review is for the FABULOUS work of Theresa), I'd say that the other people working in the salon could have been more friendly.  Sure, they were "nice" but it felt like it was forced.  To be more exact, it felt like, because *I* wasn't paying them anything, they didn't have to put out any extra effort to help me or be kind to me beyond a half-hearted reply or answer.  For instance, I walked in [early] and T wasn't around so I stood in the door (first time there) trying to figure out what to do until a nearby stylist told me to wait (but not where).  It was odd for me because I expected to be greeted and told where to sit and that T would be told I was there, instead I felt awkward and uncertain.

ANYWAY.... my hair is getting compliments, I love what was done, and I'm SO DAMN HAPPY to have FINALLY found a great stylist in a great location and with a real "eye" for hair and color and how those fit a persons skin/face/etc.  I'm really happy and I send a big heaping scoop of gratitude to Theresa.  Thank you for doing such a great job.  My hair is my ONE accessory and it ROCKS because of you!!

I've gone to Heather 4 times now over the past couple of years and I can't recommend her highly enough. The last time, I gave her a general description of what I wanted and told her that I trusted her to take those guidelines and run with it. She talked me out of some of my other ideas and steered me toward a completely wonderful and flattering short a-line bob. I'd had long hair for all of my life and told her that I just needed an extreme change.

No other stylist would I let chop all of my hair off. She's just that awesome! Book far in advance, though. She's well loved.

Some of the stylists at Hair Candy do take credit card and some don't, so check in advance.

You all know how it is when you get a new hair cut.  You look good.  Your hair smells good.  You feel great.  You walk out of the salon, floating on a cloud,  thinking "Wow!  I look HOTTT!"  And  then you wake up the next morning and you wash your hair.  And you look in the mirror to find that you are so NOT hot.  You're not even moderately attractive.  In fact, you look like a hideous freak of nature, with tentacles of hair flying off in every direction.
That's my usual experience.  And then  I found Teresa - yup, on Yelp - and decided to give her a try.   I know it's redundant to write yet another glowing review for a place that already has so many, but Teresa is awesome and deserves yet another glowing review.  After all, I was devoted enough to follow her from her former salon over to Hair Candy.  She stands apart from any other stylist I've been to because she takes the time to explain what she's doing to you, and then teaches you everything you need to know - how to dry it, how to style it, how to use the products -  in order to avoid that "Oh Crap! What did I do to myself?!" moment the next day.  Next month, I'm going to try highlights.  Teresa rocks!  Hair Candy rocks!  Yelp rocks!  I am so happy.

Dionne is just wonderful. She has worked magic on not one, but two of my friends who have the most diametrically opposed styles on the planet.

Friend #1 is flamboyant, center of attention, definitely likes to be noticed. Imagine Rita Hayworth as a modern day techno-nerd who really favors slutty cleavage-revealing fashion. Dionne gave her long flirty bangs and added black streaks to her naturally red hair. She is the cat's mrrrow.

Friend #2 is shy and reserved, a hippie with a conservative day job. She never uses product and had the same boring haircut since high school. Dionne gave her hair some layers and made it more vibrant and modern. She still looks recognizably hippie/low-key, but now in an updated and fun way.

(I know, you're wondering why haven't I gotten my hair done by Dionne. Nothing against Dionne. I just haven't gotten my hair professionally cut in years. I hack at it on my own whenever I'm feeling restless. It's a hobby. But if I were to get a professional haircut someday, I would definitely see Dionne.)

Also, this salon is in a lovely old Victorian, and they were playing an excellent mix of mostly alternative 80s music while we were there.

They only take cash, so come prepared.

I LOVE DIONNE and will never stray!

I followed recommendations from my fellow Yelp-ers and booked an evening appointment with Dionne (which worked great for my work schedule).

The salon is in a cute victorian, located in the heart of the mission (which works for post-cut drinks!).  I went in with a picture and Dionne was very patient with me as we both worked through what would work best for my face and my lifestyle.  All I knew was that I wanted to continue growing it out but was bored with the style.

The time I spent in the chair was so enjoyable.  I felt like I was hanging out with a close girlfriend.  So fun.  And when all was said and done, I left with the most amazing textured haircut, very fashion forward, that I could wear in a number of ways but most importantly was fairly easy to maintain.  It was rocker hair for not-a-rocker.  I explained to her that I hoped I would be able to make it look as good as she did and she showed me some tricks and had me do it on myself a few times.  She said if I had any problems I could come in and we could do a little tutorial session on drying and styling.  She also offers in-between upkeeps.

I have never received more compliments on a haircut!  Dionne knows what she's doing and I'm glad to have found her.

I called Hair Candy after seeing that they're listed #1 in SF, and was greeted by a voicemail. I left a message, assuming I'd have to call back in order to talk to someone. Well, the following day I received a call from Teresa who said she'd just had a cancellation for the next day. I made the appt and was quite pleased.
The salon is very cozy. It's a converted Victorian and is very colorful and fun looking. Teresa listened to my rants about my hair and made sure she knew what I wanted.
I left pleased with my new 'do and plan on going back.

Wow, I never knew Heather had so many fans (besides me)! Gosh, now I don't think I have anything interesting to say. Like just about everyone else, I see Heather to deal with my curly hair and she does a great job for a reasonable price. I'd been visiting her for a couple of years at another salon and followed her here.

I also like that the salon is near BART so it's easy to get to. It also is cute-looking.

**Note to readers:  the folks who work at Hair Candy definitely read your review!**

Update:  Dion does do free bang trims so that was a really nice way to save additional money and allow my haircut to last longer.

So they definitely don't take cards so bring cash otherwise you are running across the street to the ATM and paying the ATM fee.

Overall the haircut was pretty good--no one noticed that I cut my hair but then maybe because it's long.  It did seem to take a long time though which is good because it seems methodical but I was almost late to a wedding.  My appointment was for 1:45pm but we didn't start on my hair until 3:30/3:45 or so.  Dion was nice enough to give me a call to let me know her clients were running really late but I still ended up sitting for 45 minutes at the salon.

My highlights are probably one of the worst I've had.  The color is too brassy.  In fact that day  Dion was "surprised" to see how quickly my hair took color.  I don't think she's worked with people who have dark hair--maybe she only does blondes. But she really didn't seem to know how strong peroxide she should use or if she should use it at all.  So now my highlights look a little trampy instead of the chocolate highlights I'm used to having.

I just moved to SF from NY so I'm going to have to keep looking because this place definitely didn't cut it for me.

Like many of my Yelp brethren, I followed Heather here. Now, I heard rave reviews of the place before I got there. But then when I actually got there...

WOW!

This place is so amazing. It's much bigger than the last salon, and it's more cheerful. The pastel colors are super cute and make the name of the salon seem more real. Plus, I love the fact that it was once an old Victorian home. It makes the place more homey and welcome.

As always, Heather worked her magical hands on my hair and I came out of the place with a new cwaf that was amazingly wonderful. I owe her so very much.

Also...a few people said that they don't take credit, which is not true. I paid with my card and had no problem what-so-ever. :)

ok, so i cheated on my stylist (sorry jeff!) because i just wanted to try someone new. i got an appointment with teresa, and i'm happy with my cut. she is good with asian hair and gave me an edgy cut that is growing out really well. her prices are normal for the city. the only downside is that she is in extremely high demand -- you have to call a month in advance to book an appointment, or a week in advance to get a bang trim. damn!

Theresa is the absolute bomb.  It's a shame I've moved down to the peninsula, because Hair Candy is like half a block from my old diggs.  I could have beautiful hair every day instead of once every six months.

Oh well.

Pretty sure they don't take credit--which can be a drag if you don't remember to bring cash.

New in town, with the hair of  a wildebeast and afraid to try a new salon?  That was me.  But not anymore.

Lovey cosy salon with cheeky staff.  Unbelieveably reasonable, price-wise.

The fabulous Dionne cut my hair and I can now be seen in public, hair- flirting with abandon!

Book yourself in now, seriously.

I broke up with my hairdresser of 16 years, so when my co-worker recommended Teresa to me I was very cautious.  I walked in feeling very nervous, but as soon as I saw Teresa I eased up and thought, "OK, this girl will be able to cut my hair."  It's been great!  She's wonderful with color and inventive with styles.  There's always a cool playlist coming from the iPod and the conversation is great.  I highly recommend Teresa and Hair Candy!

I came to this great salon by way of Yelp. My coarse, naturally dark, curly hair gets regular bleaches and cuts-so I am very particular about who handles it. Well, thanks to all of you who gave reviews here because I am so happy with the results! Lisa is a true professional and extremely talented with color and cuts. My hair is in a pseudo marcel wave type curly bob.I like the look of a 1920's to '30's cut-yet with a bit of rock and roll edge. She instinctively knew how to make it look great. I have gotten so many compliments since she started doing my hair. Also, my daughter (whose hair was waist length, but damaged) received the sweetest cut from her-absolutely darling! Lisa is very friendly as well. Go to Hair Candy for a wonderful experience in a down to earth and really great salon!

Based on the positive reviews on Yelp, I made a haircut appointment with Teresa.  She was very nice and seemed very knowledgeable about cuts and coloring.  Everything was great until she started blow drying my hair.  I wonder if it's because she's not used to working with long hair.  She pulled my hair so hard the whole time and it hurts. I couldn't wait till she's finished.

In retrospect, I know I should have said something to her. I guess I was in shock...I was suppose to be under the care of an experienced hair stylist.  Shouldn't she know she's pulling someone's hair too hard, and doesn't her other clients feel the pain too beside me?  I lost quite a bit of hair that day.

When Teresa left The Salon to go to Hair Candy, which is an unbearable six blocks from my apartment instead of just one block, I decided to try getting my hair cut at a popular, reasonably priced salon in Hayes Valley my friends raved about.  Mistake.  My hair didn't have nearly the body or cute quotient it did when Teresa cut it.  Normally I wait six months between cuts because I'm a cheap ass, but this time I had to go to Teresa after just two and a half because I couldn't live with my boring hair anymore.  And she fixed me right up, and I'm bouncing around the city in style again.  She gets just the right balance between sexy, cute, and a little bit edgy.  I wish she were a tad cheaper ($65, which is a little steep in my income bracket, esp when you add tip), but she's worth it!  She's even humoring my doomed attempt to grow out my hair, though we both know I'm going to run back to her in a few months and tell her to chop it all off again (into a cute little bob).

I just found my new stylist!  Dionne has made me into a goddess!  She took my lifeless blah hair and made it fabulous!  People did double takes on the street afterward and my friends and coworkers can't stop peppering me with compliments!  This is not to mention that Dionne was totally nice, not snobby like some other salons I've been to.  The salon is also a relaxing, homey, hip space that makes you feel relaxed.  It's kinda like going to hang out with your favorite girl friends!  You MUST go!

Pretty darn awesome!  Elana is great to talk with and does a fabulous job listening to what I'm thinking for my hair and translating it into reality.  I always make my appointments way in advance for the next 8-week one, since she is so popular.

My life so far has been quite fulfilling. I'm best friends with my parents, I've enjoyed great travels across the world, I eat and drink beyond my wildest dreams, I'm healthy, and I've got a bright future at work ahead of me.

But I've never had a regular haircutter. Too hard to book, too inanely chatty, too far away -- you name it, there's always been a reason to not go back. Until now.

Call it love at first hair-tousel -- I'm putting my coif-fate in Elana's hands.

We started with a lengthy dialogue about the history and future of my hair, and agreed on a course of action. Pleasant chit-chat during the shampoo -- until out of nowhere it turned into a scalp massage, which is about the only thing known to man (well, actually, it tends to be more known to women) to shut me up. Then an expert cut employing a straightedge, three kinds of scissors, buzzers, and all sorts of techniques I'd never seen before. And for the first time in my life, I never once had one of those awkward, "Um, the conversation is dead, and I already know what you do for a living, so I don't quite know what to say" moments. Yeah!

Oh, and the place itself is really awesome. Elana did a great job preserving the house's Victorian feel while adding enough hipster-retro elements to make it feel fun and sassy.

Elana, I enjoyed this haircut so much that I signed up for a Yelp! account to tell the world about it. Your haircuts are so good that they're driving social media penetration! Wow!

Hair Candy opened in September by hair revolutionaries coup d'etat-ing out of The Salon, and is tucked away in a Victorian on 22nd, giving it a hip speak-easy vibe.   Elana is really creative, skilled, always does rad, current haircuts, and she's really friendly, and always has a good stories and conversation flow.  It's always good to come here and escape from the harsh non-haircut world.

I was in desperate need of a new stylist and hairstyle.  Thanks to you fellow Yelpers, I found Teresa.  She is FANTASTIC!  Teresa spent about 15 mintues educating me about different color options and styles that will compliment my face shape and hair texture.  I went from medium-long layered hair with blonde highlights to a chocolate brown medium bob with swide swept bangs.  I LOVE IT!  I've gotten so many compliments on my new hairstyle and it was a great change.  Teresa is an easy person to talk to, very skillful and devotes your entire appointment time to you.

Like most reviewers, I followed my stylist, Heather, from another salon. Today was my first visit to Hair Candy. The salon is situated in a converted victorian house in the Mission.

Like its name, the salon is decorated in a fun, irreverent manner: A modern silver chandelier tipped with candy-colored light bulbs greets you as you enter, and the walls are painted lime green (a fun contrast to the period crown molding and wainscotting). It does, indeed, feel like a house, not a hair salon.

Each stylist is a "chair renter" at Hair Candy, but that doesn't mean the stylists aren't great across the board. I've been relying on my stylist Heather for color, highlighting and cuts for years, and have referred her to all my friends. And from the reviews below, the other stylists are equally fabulous!

Bottom line: For a reasonably-priced hair cut or color in a fun, relaxing, roomy setting, you can't go wrong with Hair Candy.

Elana is so great. I always go away feeling so happy and full of brand spanking new self-esteem because of how great my hair comes out looking. This woman knows hair and knows what's best for your type of hair.

My recent experience with Teresa @ Hair Candy has brought me out of a two year Yelp exile! I needed a new crop to tame my mane that I've been growing out for too long.....pun intended.
I tracked down Teresa to this new salon like any hair vagabond should do. Hair massage/shampoo is still unbelievable. Cool attitude and great conversation is still awesome.
I happily walked out with a stylish hair cut that can be worn in many different ways (crazy for a Friday nights or neat for that Monday business meeting).
The location is cool too....I could see this being the setting of a TV sitcom....uh, not sure if that made any sense? You'll have to see it to believe it.
Do something with your life and book an appointment with Teresa.  She books hella early, so get on the phone now!!!

Finding The Salon was one of the first, if not the first, great find through Yelp.  A year and a half later, I still see Elana every couple of months or so for a trim.  Moving several blocks down on Guerrero to 22nd St, it's exciting to see that she's been able to open up a place of her own in a Victorian home, which she shares with other stylists.  Though there's been little variation, I've always put trust into any ideas she has for a new style.  And while they don't always turn out to be personal favorites, I've never been short on compliments.
