We had a "team building" meeting after work one day and chose to hang out here for happy hour sushi and drinks. Only one other person including myself showed up out of a 10 people in the office. So, hopefully next time we can have a bigger group join us. They apparently have private rooms for such events, so that is helpful. We sat outside because it was a cool enough day and that was nice that they had that available. Our waiter Warren was helpful and very friendly. It was kind of slow, so he sat out and chatted with us for a bit periodically.
Happy hour specials were fantastic! The only problem that I had was that I couldn't take my left over sushi home to my boyfriend. He was looking forward to having some when I got home... so he was pretty disappointed when I came home empty handed.
Overall a good experience.
Alright, I made the mistake of eating here without checking out any reviews or anything.
I was in the shopping center picking up a dress, and decided that it looked like a great place to eat. I was by myself, and the hostess sat me at a table. (I thought that was odd, personally.) My waiter looked at me, turned around, and proceeded to help all every other table except for mine. I was there for over ten minutes before he even stopped at my table to get my drink order (water with no ice, please). Granted, he had two other tables, each with several people. I kid you not, TEN minutes later, I got my glass of water (WITH ICE!) and then he walked away without even asking if I was ready to order.
I'm just going to fast-forward this. An HOUR later, I got my check (after being done eating for nearly HALF an HOUR) and left.
The sushi itself wasn't all bad. I've had much better in the past at any number of locations. I was a little miffed at the size, however. The rolls were very measly, and over-priced for what I had gotten.
Its the service that really got me. Never in my LIFE have I ever had such awful service. Maybe the waiter saw a young woman eating alone and thought that he wouldn't be getting a good tip from me. Maybe. However, his lack of customer-care ensured that all that I added at the bottom line was $.25 to show my disgust.
Please, save your time. Don't bother going anywhere NEAR this place.
Ahhh.....the pleasures and pain of cheap sushi happy hour. It's always a toss up to find that perfect place that has outstanding prices, long enough time frame and good tasting rolls/cuts of fish. I don't think HaiKu is that spot necessarily.
Located in the ginormous Southpark meadows mecca, you can find HaiKu next to Amy's Ice Cream. The happy hour goes until 6:30, which is kind of a bummer. I wish places would keep Austin traffic in mind when they offer happy hours. I joined my 2 friends and we let the fun begin. I have to say, the prices for everything, including booze and food, is really really awesome. But the big BUT goes to the rolls. Aesthetically speaking, nothing to rave about. They look like your typical HEB rolls. I really hate to say this, but they taste like them too. I just wasn't impressed one bit. I did enjoy the fact they offer a crawfish roll but that wasn't enough to save the taste of the others we ordered. I did try the baked mussels and salmon and white tuna sushi. Happily, they satisfied my craving and pleased my tummy.
Service was pretty good. Our guy checked on us and offered to put in any last-minute happy hour selections before time ran out. Smart guy. Basically I really wasn't impressed, but I did leave not paying an arm and a leg for sushi. The place seemed to be busy with other happy hour patrons.
So maybe it was me. Nah, it was the damn mediocre rolls!
I didn't have a very good food experience here. Went for dinner and went with a open mind. The service was ok, but my issue was with the sushi. I ordered a Rainbow Roll, salmon and a yellow tail sushi. First of all, the pieces of sushi were huge. They were thick cut and twice as big as normal sushi. It's pretty difficult to eat a large piece of raw fish. But, the biggest problem I had with Hauku was with the quailty of the fish. The yellow tail looked terrible. I sent the original order back and when they returned with the second order I had already lost my appetite. I don't expect to go back any time soon.
Haiku is consistently delicious. We love their happy hour - you can't beat buy one, get one free beer, and really cheap rolls. Toshi, the sushi chef is really nice; I recommend sitting at the sushi bar, where you'll be treated to cucumber salad at the beginning and and an orange half at the end.
I've also dined during lunch and the special with soup, salad and two rolls for $10 is well worth it.
I have taken a date to this restaurant a couple times and have not had any major complaints. As for atmosphere, it has a very romantic setting. It is usually dimly lit and a candle at each table. Its easy to forget that the restaurant is in a shopping center. The times I have gone it is always quiet and relaxed. The service can be lacking sometimes but that is easily overcome by the amazing sushi rolls. I recommend the Texas roll and the Tropical roll. The servers are usually slow to take your order but once they do the food usually arrives quickly and has been correct each time I have gone. It has a small bar in the front that serves some amazing pineapple Saki.
I was not impressed with this place. The layout of the restaurant is strange and not inviting. I'm not sure what type of ambiance they were trying to create with the dim lighting, but it was so dark I thought I was going to have to take out my cellphone to view the menu.
I didn't like the fact that their main sushi menu did not give a description of the ingredients for each roll. Was I supposed to close my eyes and randomly pick one or choose the one that had the most creative name? We started off with tempura and then had the Smoked Salmon, Austin, Rock and Roll, and Texas rolls. I didn't care for any of the rolls and none of them left my mouth watering. They were all unsavory and most of them fell apart before they hit my mouth.
I'm not sure how the other dishes taste, but I don't plan on venturing back to find out.
AMAZING Happy Hour prices, until 6:30m, you can't beat it.
Good Sushi and their Bubble Teas are FANTASTIC!
This place is pretty good. I went here once last year and want to return to give it another shot. I consider myself somewhat of a sushi purist. I eat sushi simply and traditionally. sashimi, nigiri and simple rolls. I'm not a fan of sauce or fried sushi because it masks the flavor of the fish more than it enhances it. Their sashimi and nigiri were very big cuts.. I don't know if that is a good thing yet. I see value in it, but then again there is a different texture and experience eating huge pieces rather than perfectly portioned ones. The fish was fresh and presented well. So for food I would give 4 stars.
The hot towel before the meal is a nice touch, but my complaint was with the waitstaff. I know my sushi very well and i know exactly what I order. I ordered tobiko with quail eggs but recieved ikura with a quail egg. To those who know sushi there is a huge difference between the two kinds of egg. I let the waitstaff know before i touched the food that I had not ordered the ikura, but she insisted that the ikura was tobiko as if I were stupid. After a few minutes of talking to the waitress I let it go because she would not be convinced I was given the wrong item. So maybe a 2.5 for service.
I am going to try this place again and hopefully write a positive update. The only thing holding me back from 4 stars is the service, maybe i had a new server or she just didn't know better.
Another fantastic dinner at Haiku! We have chosen this as our favorite stopping spot for Sushi. They have a wonderful selection of Rolls and Sushi that are prepared and served in a wonderful atmosphere.
The spicy shrimp roll, spicy tuna roll and crunchy shrimp rolls for happy hour are great! Everything is extremely fresh and has wonderful taste.
I really enjoy the side sauces for the larger rolls and the presentations are great.
I highly recommend that you visit at least once. I can pretty much guarantee that you'll come back again!
I wish I could say that I was disappointed by my visit to Haiku last night, but I knew what I was getting into. My past bad experiences with other strip mall sushi joints such as Umi should have steered me in a different direction, but I'm a sucker for a good deal, so I gave Haiku a shot.
Folks, it was bad. The scallop sushi was a desecration. What came to the table were two bundles of what looked like minced scallop potato salad. All I tasted was a mouthful of mayo. My miso soup was yummy, but it's nearly impossible to mess that up. Broth + onion + dallop of miso from a tube = miso soup. Not hard. My dragon roll was nearly inedible. The "snow crab" inside was more minced, seafood salad with a sliver of eel. The presentation was cute; they made my roll into a dragon with octopus suckers for eyeballs and cut shrimp to create horns.
Our server Sydney was sweet and helpful, the one bright spot in an otherwise mediocre sushi meal.
It has fueled my sushi addiction to a whole new level. lol I still love it and it's fantab for take out!

This place was at first a decent find, that is until I discovered their tendency to manipulate their online ratings by creating fake accounts in order to give positive reviews.
Their sushi is average at best. Their wait staff is horribly slow and sometimes they seem put-out by having to wait on you.
I find no need to go here ever again. There are SO many better choices just a few minutes away. Uchi, Umi, Yu Sushi, Mikado, Sushi Sake, Mushasino, Maiko, Kenichi, Tokyo... and a dozen more.
I would probably have gone back if it hadn't been for their obvious online scam.
Despite being slightly frightened of Southpark Meadows (that place has so much stuff. It's like an outdoor Mall of America and I fear one day it will have it's own government and a place where you can get old-timey sepia-toned pictures taken), Haiku was a nice last minute dinner find after running errands within the Southpark Meadows compound.
We arrived near closing time, but the staff didn't seem to mind. They were extremely friendly. I did not try the sushi, but had an entree. They tend to run between $15 and $18 but do come with a bowl of soup and a salad. The miso soup was good and I loved my salad. The tempura plate was so gigantic I had enough for lunch the next day.
Bonus points for giving me children's chopsticks AND a fork as I am chopstick-challenged.
Wow. Okay, first, here's my quick schpeel. I learned to love sushi on the coast of California. It's fresh and cheap there, no matter where you go. When I came back to Texas after years in Cali, I was distressed by the lack of affordable, fresh sushi places.
And then I found HaiKu, which is just that -- fresh and affordable. And delicious. With a classy atmosphere. And hot waiters. Umm what? No, you didn't hear that. Move along. They're all mine.
Seriously, though, I ordered three rolls -- crunch (like a fancy California roll with real crab and tempura flakes on the outside), "special" eel (aka "eel"), and salmon-and-avocado. They were all take-me-to-my-happy-place delicious. Also, I'm pretty sure they were all $4.50, which made my day. I got stuffed on sushi rolls (yes I ate them all myself because the friends I dragged with me are anti-sushi) for LESS money than my friends paid for boring ol' chicken teriyaki. Nice.
The only thing that makes HaiKu less than perfect? It's in Austin, and I'm in Dallas. WHYYYY??!?!?!
The value of Haiku is in it's Happy Hour. (4-6:30) We're talking $1.50 sushi.. $3 rolls... it's quick food, usually well made, and cheap. The owners are respectful and kind people. They have their kids up there sometimes, working on homework at the bar. The bathrooms are peacefully clean and well designed. I also like the hot washcloth that they bring out before your meal - refreshing...
Anyway it's cheap - GET SUM!
As a lot of people said, good sushi joints are as rare as it gets in South Austin.
A friend recommended this place and I decided to give it a try today and went at Happy Hour. A really nice perk is that their happy hour lasts from 4 - 6:30 - this is a good range of time when students such as me are stuck in traffic for about an hour and half going home right around that time. Other places have happy hours of about 15 minutes where you scrounge to get there half an hour early only to miss it by another half an hour because there's a ridiculously long line.
We walked in and the ambiance was really nice - dimly lit with little candles at each table. However, I decided to go there with my male roommate, so it was two guys walking around with couples at every other table. REGARDLESS however, we were seated immediately, and the service was quick and pleasant. We were seated with towels that were steaming hot to wash our hands with (How cool is that?! I felt suave and sophisticated)
Their menu was pretty broad, there was about 10 sushi options and 10 options for rolls on the happy hour menu. The sushi were $1.50 while the rolls were $3.00 each. They had a few appetizers (gyoza and edamame as far as I can remember) both for under three bucks. I didn't get any, but the back was a very very very long list of cheap and a variety of alcohol.
I came starving and got the crunchy, spicy tuna, and dynamite. They all came out pretty quick, nicely placed and prepared. They tasted fresh and was satisfying enough to fill me up (Ten bucks of sushi filled me up, who'd thought).
SO. If you want quick, fresh sushi with the perks of not standing in long lines or paying for parking (downtown austin is just awful) then give haiku a try.
I created an account just so I could write in and say some good things about this place. I went there with my fiance because we were craving sushi and this is one of our favorite sushi joints. Well we ordered the Love Boat and it was waaaay too much food haha. It could have fed four people. In the middle of our dinner, after the only other group in the restaurant left, the host (manager?) brought over a lit lantern and turned down the lights for us to set the mood for us. It was a really nice gesture. Everyone is always very nice when we go there, and it is very elegant yet I feel comfortable wearing shorts and a T-shirt in there. Thanks Haiku.
Surprisingly good sushi for the price. My wife and I usually split the sushi dinner and maybe one other roll. The dinner comes with a soup and a salad--she likes soup I like salad so it works out pretty well.
Definitely try the Tiger roll and the Haiku roll. My only complaint would be that they are a little tempura crumble-crazy, but if that's your thing, you'll love it.
Haiku restaurant is by far the best sushi place in South Austin. It is one of the best finds out there for anyone looking for cheap, flavorful food in a great atmosphere and awesome service.
The facade of Haiku blends in with the other businesses and restaurants of the Grove in South Park Meadows shopping center, formerly the concert area for us native Austinites, located just off of I-35. The sign is very elegant, yet discrete. As you walk in, you are greeted by the manager and taken to your seat. The dining area is surprisingly large, and you have the choice of a booth, table, or sushi bar. We sat at a booth which gave us a nice view of the sushi bar. The two chefs were working very hard while still maintaining conversation with the people sitting at the bar. Toshi seemed very nice, joking with one of his customers.
We were greeted by a very nice waitress who brought us warm towels before she took our drink order. This was a nice touch to start off our dining experience. She quickly brought us our drinks and took our order in stride, never wasting a moment. I can always appreciate attentive service like hers.
The food was brought out very quickly, within 10 minutes of placing our order. We had the Longhorn roll and the Tropical roll, both of which were presented on large white plates and garnished beautifully. The longhorn roll is a nice combimation of crab, tempura shrimp, and tuna. The Tropical roll consisted of crab, tempura shrimp, and salmon. The meats were very fresh and tasty, but what really made these dishes were the sauces. The Longhorn roll is dressed in a spicy mayonnaise that is just awesome. It is just spicy enough to have some kick, and flavorful enough to eat by itself. It complimented the roll perfectly. The Tropical roll was different, but very nice as well. It has salmon and mango on top of it, and it is covered in a sweet tropical sauce. The sauce has a little spice to it as well, but it is by no stretch of the mind overpowering. Both dishes were just delightful.
Each of the rolls were HUGE, filling us both up. They were reasonably priced, beautifully presented, and freshly made. Couple that with great service and awesome atmosphere and you have one hell of a sushi experience that will bring you back for more. Ask for Jennifer.
I've been here for both lunch and dinner at various times and there's really been nothing special or bad until today. Overall, the place is clean and when you first sit down, they give you a hot hand towel which kind of a nice touch. I've also gotten takeout a few times before and preparation takes longer than some other places but it's been ok.
However, today, I had an Twilight Zone meets Seinfeld experience that has cast a cloud over my recommending or endorsing this place.
I walk in during the1/2 price happy hour time and I pick up a happy hour menu. It's an unusually cold and rainy day and the place is pretty dead and I just want to grab a couple of the happy hour rolls for takeout and go home...not a big deal right?
When I advise the lady at the front that I would to place an order for takeout, she stammers that they don't allow that, that the happy hour pricing is only for those who come in and sit down, and then she proceeds to hand me a regular menu to order takeout.
Of course, since I have already gotten takeout during happy hour before I'm a little taken aback at this announced "policy". Plus, as she says this, I quickly review the happy hour menu and it's not like it has an *exception - happy hour prices do not apply to takeout. I then ask, "So, if I sit down, order and then want a to-go box when the food is ready are you not going to let me walk out with it?" She says... "Yes, you can, but only if it is a little bit." She again shoves forth the regularly priced menu.
At this point, I start to feel like I'm a bad episode of the Twilight Zone and took a moment to pause, reflect and pinch my arm to make sure I wasn't dreaming. With this pause, she yelled over to a manager or coworker behind the bar asking if the restaurant would allow a takeout order and when they said no, I decided to just turn and leave.
Sure, this place can slice and set raw fish on rice, but they won't be doing it for me and my $ any time soon. There are other and better options nearby like D K Sushi/Seoul http://www.yelp.com/bi... & Umi - http://www.yelp.com/bi... where I've not had a sushi nazi hostess who would rather spend three minutes dictating to me how I can receive an order rather than walking 20 steps to deliver a takeout order to the sushi chef and ringing up some business.
I've been here several times and never had a bad experience. The sushi is always very fresh and rolled well. The servers are usually new to what they are serving, but that's what you're going to get in a strip mall. They've always been very friendly and helpful. The lunch specials are awesome and the sushimi platter is enormous. Bring friends along to share this thing. My daughter loved the kids cheater chop sticks and a paper pineapple they afixed to her juice. They are very kid friendly and that's a plus.
Haikus for Haiku:
tender fresh salmon
atop a sweet ball of rice
and it's super cheap
I love the eel roll
It only cost five dollars
and it is kick ass
make sure that you try
the honey wasabi shrimp
hot and sweet, crispy and fat
I eat here often
it is fresh, healthy and cheap
did I mention cheap?
I've been to Haiku a few times for lunch with co-workers. The fish has always been fresh and the rolls are well made. The cuts of the salmon nigiri I ordered were huge and delicious and the steak tataki was pretty tasty. The lunch special has been a great deal the few times I've had it. Everything seems reasonably priced and the decor is not bad for a strip-mall location. Service has been good all the times I've been. If you are a hardcore sushi connoisseur then you will not be impressed, but I'd say this place is better than average.
Hungry? Good sushi
Not fantastical, but fine
Enjoyable staff.
Well, what can I say
about the big Kyle Roll?
Covered in fish roe.
Interesting, too.
Cinnamon and Wasabi
And Habanero
Pot stickers, fried right
Nothing beats an Ichiban--
Cold with spicy food
Crunchy roll, the fave.
Ate that stuff right up, ya know?
Others were just fair
Would I yet return?
Possibly. It's close to home
But not the best ever.
Great stuff!
Haiku is a nice sushi place to go to when you just want to eat great sushi. Sometimes their shashimi can be frozen but I eat here almost every week and this has rarely happened. I find that the staff is friendly and I love every roll I have every tried. The Haiku roll is my favorite.
Added bonus: they have a great happy hour!! I encourage you to check them out!!
This place is a little pricey (like all Japanese restaurants) but their food is fresh and top quality! I highly recommend the Crunchy Roll :)
My husband and I tried Haiku tonight and really enjoyed it. We had the Love Boat, and my lord is it huge. The sushi and tempura were good, the teriyaki, especially the beef was awesome. The chicken rice is more like donburi rice than fried rice, nice and mild and slightly sweet, not oily at all. The soup is a clear dashi with a few noodles in it instead of miso soup, which is a nice light start to the meal.
The service was great and the restaurant was very pretty and relaxing.
My husband proclaimed we had to be members of the "clean boat club" (much to my dismay) but we ended up taking home enough food for both our our lunch tomorrow.
Update:
We went for happy hour the other day, and had some of their happy hour $1.50 sushi and $2.99 rolls. It definitely helped on the price total, even though every coke refill adds more than a buck. Ugh. The sushi was ok, but I'm still not really excited about it. They don't put wasabi in their sushi, which makes it taste a little bland to me. I realize I can wipe it over the top, which I did, but I'd rather not have to fool with it. The eel roll we got tasted vinegar-y. The service was attentive and friendly and the decor looked better in daylight, but it's still a bit weird.

Haiku's a nice little place that fits well with the rest of the restaurants at the grove in Southpark Meadows. If anything the interior is... tall. The dining area isn't terribly large, but it's interestingly laid out and the ceilings are tall, which gives a strange feeling. Also, there's a lot of, if I remember correctly, green light. The result is that it feels more modern that some may like, and not exactly intimate. If you had a booth by the windows it might be better, but it was hard to avoid looking at the other people eating.
The sushi is fresh and pretty good. It's not mindblowing enough to knock off my favorite sushi spot, but the prices are good and the food is enjoyable. The service is friendly and attentive.
Monday thru Friday from 4 till 6 or 6:30 they have Happy Hour in the bar with some really good deals like buy one drink get one free, $2.99 california rolls and other goodies. We haven't been yet, but that's probably what we'll hit next.
I've been to HaiKu twice now and have yet to be disappointed. The first time my husband and I were a bit undecided about what to order, so we splurged and got a Love Boat for two. For $48 you get chicken and beef teriyaki, tempura, a cali roll, assorted sashimi, rice, salad, and soup. Yes, it's a ton of food but I was under the impression the servings would be small so as to serve just two people. Wrong! Luckily we brought our appetites because we happily stuffed ourselves silly, which didn't go unnoticed by the manager. She was proud of us for almost finishing the whole thing.
The second time we downscaled a bit. I ordered the salmon teriyaki dinner and again found the portions large enough to take some home for lunch the next day. We got the chicken rice this time and I much prefer it over the steamed. The crunchy roll was also tasty. I'm not much of a sushi/sashimi eater (that's the husband) but everything looked very fresh and was beautifully presented. The plum wine I ordered was light and sweet and went well with my meal.
Aside from the food, the atmosphere and service at HaiKu is top notch. It has a nice modern decor with very clean lines. The service was excellent and the manager makes the rounds often to check on customers. We have yet to eat at the sushi bar but have been seated near it, and the staff there are very personable.
The best thing about HaiKu is that even though it looks upscale, it seems to be a friendly little neighborhood place. The staff recognizes their frequent diners, even though they are now getting more business. Little things like that will keep me going back for more.
Sadly, I have to take off a couple of star. I've been to this place several times after my first review and each time I go back the service gets slower and the cuts of fish gets smaller. This time not only was the sashimi cuts small but it was also a bit on the frozen side.
I can no longer say this is my go to place for sushi.

Good sushi has finally made it to South Austin! Haiku is a nice casual restaurant located in the… Read more »
My boyfriend and I ordered the sushi & sashimi combo ($30) with a crawfish roll ($4.50) on the side and couldn't finish it all! The combo came with 8 pieces of sushi, 15 pieces of sashimi and a snow crab roll. The fish was extremely fresh and the pieces were very large. Neither of us cared for either of the rolls.
The ambience was pleasant and the service wasn't bad. Everyone was extremely polite, but slooooow. It took them forever to greet us once we'd been seated and even longer to take our drink order. This continued on while waiting for our entrees and then when it was time for the check. Definitely not a place if you are in a hurry.
I like HaiKu a lot. This is really a 3.5 star review, but I'd say there are more plusses than minuses. There specialty rolls are huge and everything I've had tastes really fresh. The prices are good for what you get. The service can be spotty at times, but seems to be improving. I really love their house salad (for the dressing -- I'm addicted,) but a couple of times I've gotten it in a warm bowl. I hate cold salads in warm bowls!
The seating is also a little weird. If you sit in one of the booth seats in the middle row, and its just 2 of you, you are facing the diners across from you. I don't know, maybe its affecting my closet-eating side, but I feel a little like I'm on show. Don't dribble that sauce down the blouse, Lynn! All in all, this is a good place for a sushi fix.
Meh, indeed.
We were debating between Haiku and Shogun for a late-ish dinner on a Saturday night, and decided to try Haiku since we had never been. Despite being half-empty, they sat us at the end of their middle booths right next to the kitchen and waitress stations. It wasn't too bad since it wasn't that busy, but it did make us feel like less-than-desired guests.
Our waitress and the way they presented the menu are the top reasons for the "meh-ness". She was rarely attentive, and when I asked a question about a roll I received that wasn't what I expected (or wasn't what was explained on the menu), she just confirmed that it was what I had ordered, and that was that. The menu says the dinner items come with "soup and salad", but don't say which soup or salad, and so when my boyfriend ordered seaweed salad for his entree, he didn't realize it would cost extra, something that also wasn't explained.
The sushi was also somewhat sub-par. I ordered the volcano roll, which came out as a quite impressive mass of fish, but was almost impossible to eat. The roll pieces were way too large and thick, and when bitten into fell apart. I sadly scooped up my remaining pieces of roll, while sucking down my allowance of one watered-down soda, and frowned at the experience. I really wanted it to be good. I truly, truly did-- but the experience of meh sushi and meh service makes me want to say that I won't be going back in a while. Maybe for a lunch special far off in the future, but not anytime soon.
Sorry, Haiku. You failed me.
I actually like this place. For shopping center sushi it's not horrible.
Two words. Happy Hour. It is serious here, 2 dollar beers, cheap ass saki, and rolls that are damn good for less that 3 bucks! I think it's weekdays from 4-6:30, and it will knock your socks off. I like to sit at the sushi bar cause the chefs will occasionally chat with you and are hilarious.
I love sushi but good sushi is hard to find. Haiku has it, along w/great customer service. You can see the sushi chefs creating their artwork. They give you hot towels for cleaning your hands. The food is fresh w/great presentation. No complaints here! South Austin needed a good sushi place.
We love this place for Happy Hour. We have made it our home. The sushi list is ample for half price sushi until 6. I recommend the crunchy roll and the snow crab roll off of the happy hour menu. The Longhorn roll is the best off of the regular menu, and if you like spicy-the dynamite roll is perfect. The appetizers are great for starters, edamame is fresh and the miso is one of my favorites. The service is great, they take good care of us. The best part is the saki. It comes hot or cold and you have a choice of strawberry and pineapple if you'd like it flavored, which has become one of our regular orders.
We visited the hip and modern Haiku for the first time last night, to get a small bite before a movie. Enjoyed the miso soup (not too salty, and no need for a carp to come along and eat all the seaweed), a tempura appetizer (which my friend LOVED because of the jumbo shrimp) and split a gigantic, slurpily yummy bowl of Beef Udon soup. Sydney was our server who was friendly and efficient and asked about our pending movie - Hancock. Can't go wrong with a 4th of July Will Smith movie, right?
Sydney explained that the owners of this Japanese restaurant are a Chinese family who fled New Orleans post Katrina, landed in Austin and saved enough money to open Haiku. We're lucky to have them here!
This place is pretty crummy. I guess they are trying to create some type of ambiance with the dim lights, but it was so dark in the place, I couldn't read my menu. The waitress was really nice, but she came to our table holding a baby, which was rather strange. Also, she didn't let us know, that they do not offer free refills on the drinks, until after she had brought me several drinks and our bill. Our food was okay; maybe we ordered the wrong thing. I don't think I will be coming back here, since there are so many other places to choose from, which offer a much better atmosphere and dining experience.
