Review from Whitney M.
San Francisco, CA
I spend many many a Sunday sitting at a coveted sunny outdoor table and drinking the hands-down BEST latte in the vicinity and noshing on the most affordable lox bagel that you'll ever find. 8 coffees = 1 free coffee with their stamp card. All the ladies & gents behind the counter are exceptionally friendly. The market is amazing in every way. Cheap & fresh produce abounds. Neighborhood discount is given on a lot of produce as well. More tea than you've ever seen. Superb deli. Organic beauty products that make me swoon. Lots of Bay Area goods.
I recently went on a Thursday morning - strangely different experience ... Haight Street gutter punks were taking up the majority of the tables and coughing/hacking up unspeakable things for minutes on end. No fault of HSM's, but it was still disgusting! -

Loved the free meat samples that they were giving out this week. Yummy.
I love the space since the expansion. Love the deli and the fresh meat bar. I am in love with the red liquorish that is in the bulk bin area. It is great to get organic foods as well as meats in a health food store. With all of the new additions to the store, I still think that the moving about space still comes up short. I think they still could us another 3000 square feet especially to make more room for those in wheelchairs. If one is in a wheelchair, they will have a very challenging time getting around the store since some of the isles won't accommodate them very well.
Having said the the space is a bit small yet, the space is clean, inviting, busy, and friendly. The prices are better than Whole Foods, so go here instead. Support a local owner in lieu of Whole 'Pay-Check' Foods.
The store is easy to get to via Muni (71, 43, 6). Get there super early in the am if you are driving since parking is quite impossible later in the day. -

I was honestly very concerned when the HSM expanded to a larger space. I thought that the prices would go up and the quality would go down, something which commonly happens when places expand. But nothing could be further from the truth. The groceries have remained well priced for the quality and there is more variety. The cafe and deli are absolutely superb. Honestly there is nothing better! In fact i would challenge anyone to find anything more fulfilling than getting some beers and their pulled pork sammich (or for you veggie lovers out there, the hippy hill sammich) and spending a day in the park.
My only real complaint, oddly enough, is that even with their expansion there may not be enough room now! ha. -

I really like Haight Street market. The produce is terrific and it's priced right. $50 at Whole foods would be about $20 at HSM. The deli staff are a cool bunch; they're willing to make special cuts and even season your chicken for you. I'm glad they expanded!

This place has really changed since Whole Foods moved in. I could never imagine going to Whole Foods with this is in the hood.
The old store was cute and friendly, and pretty well stocked for a single store-front. But it couldn't offer all the stuff the big competitor could.
The new store, however, is a great damn grocery store. Great produce, dry-food, cheese, bread, meat, prepared-food, coffee, and everything else selection and quality. Great service, crazy-friendly employees & owner, and neighborhood ("member") discounts.
I think the only weak spot is the wine selection - it's definitely not up to par, but there's plenty of good wine stores in San Francisco. -

I absolutely LOVE this place.
I do a lot of my grocery shopping here. They have Annie's brand, delicious fresh-baked bread, and lots of different cheeses and yogurts. They strive to provide organic and fresh food, so yea, the price is more than you would spend at Safeway on some produce doused in chemicals. But I honestly feel that the prices aren't that bad, and really what I would expect for the great quality I get here. I know that everything I put in my shopping basket is the best of the best.
Their employees are really kind, and they have a surprising amount of stuff despite the small space. There's a lot of veggie faux meat in the freezer section, the Wallaby yogurt is so yummy, there is sometimes a stand set up for you to sample cheese, and the bread is freakin' life-changing. Oh, and there's a TON of tasty, vegan-friendly "ice cream" as well. I love that I can purchase junk food here and feel a little bit better about it at least...
Favorite grocery store in the city! -

Haight Street Market has my heart.
They always have free samples of fruit, their produce is insanely delicious and fresh, and their staff are unbelievably sweet and personable. In fact I will go out of my way - just for some light check-out counter conversation.
My favorite aspect of this place as of late - is their huge packets of blackberries for a dollar. A dollar! I made a fresh blackberry pie today for just two dollars. You can't beat that. You just can't/
Don't ever change Haight Street Market.

I think if I moved out of this neighborhood, I'd be having a really really hard time being without this market. First off. If you're a foodie, 3 words: legit Greek grocer! I can't exactly afford to do my weekly shopping here but I make a point to buy all my produce and last minute meals stuff here. The price is really fresh, local, and often organic. But here's the kicker for me. The feta cheese. No joke. I LOVE feta but didn't really understand that there was a difference. I didn't even know what good fresh real feta was until I bought theirs. TRUST ME. JUST TRY IT ONCE and you'll be glad did. I can't stress that enough. The new deli is fantastic. Try the dolmas.
If I could give this place more stars, I would. SO TRY THE FETA! -

So you wanna put a Whole Foods at the end of Haight? Well, I won't tell you to stop. Go ahead, it's nothing that my Haight Street Market can't handle!
Who has the best heirloom tomatoes this time of year? HSM.
Who has the best avocados? HSM.
Who has Blue Bottle Coffee, a fantastic cheese selection, a full deli, fresh bread, fruit samples, friendly cashiers, AND is a hop, skip and jump CLOSER to my house than Whole Foods? HHHHSSSSSMMMMM!!!
That said, Whole foods is cool too. -

Love this place. The owners are super sweet and so is the staff. They have tasty sandwiches to go, a convenient coffee bar, and yummy, reasonably-priced produce. The only reason I don't give them the extra star is because sometimes it is hard to move around the store with all the displays and then the shelves constantly being replenished - which I know is a good thing in terms of freshness of product - but it can get cluster-fucky. I wish they had more bath and body products, I just don't like having to go to Whole Foods or Rainbow to get that stuff and I would buy it here if they carried it. I hope they expand, again.

During a mammoth day hike of SF, this market served as a quick pit stop as I explored the Haight for the first time. I needed to use the loo, so I stopped in.
From my quick scan, I could tell this would be my kind of store. Lots of good looking produce, nice organic food, and friendly staff. The latter pointed me to the restroom. There was also a deli-type joint here as well, and it looked good. Next time I'll definitely have to put this market to more use! -

Best grocer in the whole damn neighborhood. Yeah, I'm lookin' at you, Real Foods Stanyan and Whole Paycheck Haight. And I'm DEFINITELY lookin' at you, Alpha Market Cole (wilted green onions? Really?)
Ever since they expanded to add a full-service meat and prepared foods counter, the good folks at Haight Street Market have created the only place for locals to find high-quality organic produce, high-quality meats, and reasonable prices.
It helps a lot that their service is best-in-class. It once took me 5 minutes to get one of the hipsters at Real Foods to even acknowledge my presence; the Haight Street Market employees are across-the-board friendly, attentive, and clearly getting sent home with the leftovers - they're happy people!
Can be quite packed during the usual hours, but for good reason. I like how the aisles are cramped and it's kinda awkward to pass by other customers - hey look, a market that uses its space!
I only wish it were closer to my place in Cole Valley. On my lazy days, I put up with the abuse at Real Foods, or, in real desperation, will pluck a hormone-enhanced apple from Alpha Market. Haight Street Market is the place. -

This place Rock!!!

So i shop for food and sing at the same time... Awesome...
Prices are average but the quality is top of the line. -

What was already the best little local produce store in town, is now the best grocery store in San Francisco, period. Deli, salads, butcher, fresh fish, beer, wine, and let's not forget perfectly pulled shots of Blue Bottle espresso pulled to order. The whole roasted chickens are delicious and a great deal. Now that this store has expanded, there's really no reason to shop anywhere else.
And, for the record, friends don't let friends shop at Whole Foods. Whatever you want to eat - you can get it at the Haight Street Market - support your local and family-owned grocer!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Gorgeous environment, friendly staff, and DELICIOUS DELI.
Get a sandwich at Haight Street Market. Get one. I dare you. Because you have never tasted such a delicious sandwich.
I suggest dutch crunch bread, easy on the mayo, and the roasted peppers & onions on any and every sandwich you order. The quinoa salads are lovely as well.
MMMMM!!! I've found my favorite deli for sure. Success!! -

Loving the new and much expanded market. They carry tons of local products, have a deli with lots of Mediterranean style foods, along with lots of other goodies. OMG their wraps are amazing, try the Indonesian or the Mumbai wraps if you're a vegetarian like me. The men working in the deli are super helpful and for the most part everyone is friendly.
his market is truly a neighborhood market and very San Franciscan. I'm loving it!!
P.S.
They also have an espresso bar which serves Blue Bottle!!! Yum! -
Review from Jane K.
To market, to market ... to buy up delicious deli foods, hot toasted bagels with lox and herb cream cheese (only $3.50!), Blue Bottle Coffee and of course, all the typically grocery foods one might need on a daily basis.
The selection of healthy eats is extensive, and while it's the size of Whole Foods down the street - it makes up for that in quality and prices. And on those rare sunny mornings, it'd nice to kick back on the bench out front and watch the neighborhood wake up. -
Review from Chris T.
What a great local market -- fresh and plentiful produce, a variety of fresh meat (and a full-service meat counter), and natural/organic goods and brands that cater to SF consumers. The staff is also friendly and the coffee kiosk serves several Blue Bottle coffee roasts (kiosk only takes cash though) and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly.

Here's why you need to shop here:
Organic produce that is AFFORDABLE! It's not $6.00 for a basket of strawberries! It's $1.00.
There is a giant selection of everything organic, good for you and tasty. The deli selection expanded & did a great job of providing interesting & delicious fare.
There's a sizable wine selection as well!
For a one stop shop market, go to the Haight St. location. And best of all, no deals with Monsanto & GMO foods, unlike Whole Foods down the street. -

Excellent grocery store. They carry all of the quality food brands that I am looking for and have an excellent produce section for when you don't manage to make it to the farmer's market.
There wine and beer selection is smaller than at whole foods and lucky BUT the selection is great, offering items at different price points.
The deli and pre-made food offerings offers a nice variety and quality as well. I am so glad they got their expansion done quickly and that I have such a great neighborhood business to support. -

What can I say? If you would've asked me 2.5 years ago about this place, (when I didn't live here yet) I would've told you it was small and super over-priced. Over the years, though, (and after moving here) they seem to have gone through astronomical growth, and I can only commend the owners for making such a gutsy strategic move to put up a big fight with Whole Paycheck, which just opened a while back at the end of Haight. Thank you also for allowing me to wow the lovely girlfriend with delicious food I've made with your items!
After the sticker-shock wore off, though, it's true, their produce is fantastic, cheap, and always fresh. They carry tons of organic options, and they also have the essential staples at a decent price. Their prices seem to have either gone down a bit with the opening of their expansion, or I love this place so much now that I don't feel bad spending a little more just to support this local institution. I usually come here every 3-4 days and look around for cool stuff I can't find anywhere else. The people working here are SO nice. Enough said.
If only they carried a few more things (that I gotta hit up Trader Joe's to get) I would never shop anywhere else.
Go local! Support the Haight St market!

I've been shopping at HSM for 17 years, so I'm a little biased.
However, some reasons why you might want to go to the new, expanded HSM there aside from the usual organic produce:
* Beer: a huge selection of interesting West Coast microbrews, including several I haven't seen anywhere else in the city.
* Wine: really good selection of mid-priced California and European wines; a lot of excellent stuff in the $9 to $18 range.
* Fish: best high-quality fish market between Faletti's and New May Wah. Blows away Whole foods completely.
* Deli: lots of interesting salads and you-heat stuff which change daily. Like pastitzio, weird greek salads, asiago-potato salad, more.
Frankly, HSM stands up against any gourmet market the city has to offer. Plus, you know, local and family-owned. -

I'm so glad my friend took me here. She changed my life in a really great way.
This small store is jam-packed with yummy goodness. I feel like a kid in a candy store when I'm there. Excellent produce, excellent breads, excellent meat & fish counter, excellent deli counter, excellent... other stuff that escapes my mind right now.
The long lines proceed at a breakneck pace AND it's pretty affordable!
What more can a girl ask for? (From a store! You're so naughty!)
I love this place. -

Now that Haight Street Market has completed their expansion and had their official grand opening, I feel compelled to write an update and give them their five stars as is only right and proper. Haight Street Market will be my official, Chris-endorsed grocery store as long as I live in this neighborhood (i.e., prolly forever.) They now have everything one could ever possibly want or need from a grocery store - the best produce section in the neighborhood, a very good meat counter, a great deli counter, a fine selection of organic/natural boxed foods, a very decent cheese selection, a wide range of all natural toiletries, Blue Bottle coffee, and a huge beer selection. In fact, the only thing they don't have is delicious Pliny the Elder IPA. I need to talk to them about that.
Not too long ago, I watched proprietor Bobby Vardakastanis, gently wrest a shoplifted bottle of beer out of the hands of one the neighborhood's annoying homeless youth. He shook his head in bemusement and placed the bottle back on the shelf. I asked him if he'd ever consider a checked bag policy like his stupid looking competitor, Whole Foods, down the street. His response was "fug no!" Awesome!
The best thing, however, was walking in one day and seeing him standing in the middle of the store, beaming with pride at the obvious success generated by the expansion. That earned my instant grocery store loyalty. There's nothing more satisfying than seeing a neighbor's hard work and determination pay off in such a gratifying way. Two thumbs up and +1,000,000 points for Haight Street Market, mang!1 Previous Review: Show all »

For some reason the inner sunset grocers don't really start functioning until 9.30, so hit the Haight Street Market, and was impressed. They have a lovely clean store, lots of produce and at good prices eg. 12c for a chili pepper, 42c for fresh ginger. And a fantastic selection of spices!

I have loved "The Green Awning" for years. (I actually did not know it was called HSM until the new grand re-opening;)
Unbeatable produce quality & prices. The perfect city selection of groceries - organics, gluten-free, cheeses, sauces, spices, even cosmetics. The Green Awning has it all!
Whether my budget is $6 or $30 I can always leave there with a full meal's supplies. And a feel good send off from the people that work there and actually know their customers.
Thank you for feeding me so well for the last 10 years!
Of course the NEW Improved market is doubly amazing, from the delicious prepared foods to the WINE! Yay WINE! The lines may look long, but it is 10x faster than whole foods. TRUST ME. -

Exhibit A: Expanded store, new cold foods cases, meat counter, expanded veg section, beer section, small over priced baked goods section from Goody Good.
Price: comparable to whole foods, possibly cheaper because it's not corporately sourced from their headquarters (can national chains actually source locally to make a difference on the price paid by the consumer?). I'd rather buy a cheap bell pepper than a local bell pepper.
Free market economy and capitalism at its best. Welcome to America.3 Previous Reviews: Show all »

I've been shopping here since I was a wee lass, and it is alway a good experience seeing the Haight Street Market Family. For years they were the only place to shop to get fresh groceries in the Haight, so I love them for that.
Also, to make them even more awesome, they now sell coffee, wine, beverages and assorted deli treats. Stay local friends, don't buy at the behemoth down the street. -

I am so glad to see local markets expanding especially in the Haight area. Small store but the friendliest people though! I have to say people were coming out of nowhere asking if I needed help in a un-sarcastic but very friendly way. The food great, not crazy about their organic chocolate a little pricey. Loving their veggies and fruits, great fair trade bananas. Your papaya looked Yum Yum as well!
Blue bottle coffee , never had this type but I am so glad I came here for my first try, Fantastic! The barista was great, it took a couple of minutes for my coffee but worth the wait. FRESH COFFEE; Flavorful; I might add a little tangy but with a sweet boldness to it, Wahoo! Your food to go features look great, seafood fresh and will come back for your hippie sandwich for sho! -

Since the expansion, this place is better than ever! The quality of their produce has always been excellent, and now they have an expanded selection of everything else a normal grocery store has, with an emphasis on local and earth-friendly products. Also a good variety of bulk, vegetarian, and vegan products. I love the staff here, they are very friendly and helpful.

I'm not sure how they do it, but somehow they always have the cheapest berries around. I'm talking $0.89 for a pretty big box of strawberries, or $1 for a box of blackberries. Some may say it's because they go bad in like...one day, but I really wouldn't know because they usually end up in my stomach in 2 seconds.
Their packaged goods are on the expensive side, but sometimes there are sales that make certain things affordable. They also have a KILLER dessert/baked goods section, including red velvet cupcakes from Sweet Things (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) that I love.
Also, they recently(ish) expanded, so it's twice as big now, and quite beautiful ("TWSS!"). -

I have a confession... I've been shopping at Haight St Market since they were down the street on the other side of Clayton; I was a little kid. I remember when his wife was pregnant with their first son. I made many a trip when my mother forgot an item for a recipe, or just wanted some fresh "yuppie chow" before it was standard practice to have Mescalin Mix for salad.
They always have the best in season organic and local foods, and the prices do reflect that. However the quality is so much better than you can find in any chain, and equivalent to something that you'd find at the local farmer's market, but for less.
Show your locavore love and shop at the Haight St. Market.
