This was a great place to go to including around Halloween while I was growing up. To this day, I like to stop by every once and a while and relax around this area. It has enhanced throughout the years and is a really fun family oriented spot to take your children to.

As for the Haggin Museum itself, it's not the biggest museum you'll ever go to, but it's nice to have something to do and keep your children occupied if you don't want to take them for pizza and ice cream :) Maybe they can learn a new thing or two.

I haven't been here since 3rd grade but this is a great place to hang out because the park is huge. I always see a lot of families having birthday parties here all season long.

Its got one of the nicest parks to walk around here and kids love the ducks. There are a few native baskets here that are worth the visit to see. Beware of goose bumps downstairs if you know what I mean!

This is one of those places you leave and feel like you actually had a fulfilling and educational day and it was a really great time!

The staff is very nice, the place is in the middle of a park, it's got art, jade, beautiful paintings, the history of Stockton, things about Native Americans, a really beautiful old boat..

..and what I saw that I had to ask about was the neat blue tile floor in the jade room and downstairs near the gift shop.. Tile that was from the original Stockton courthouse. Beautiful.

Check this out. I was born in Stockton, moved and am now living in the Sacramento area.. Had heard to check this place out and i was so happy!

Went there last week sometime, and it brought back childhood memories.

The best is learning that all the tanks throughout the world today started in Stockton!!  Ben Holt was the man!!

Loved the Stockton history with Weber and the personal guided tour.

All residents of Stockton should go to the Haggin at least once.  You will learn about Stockton's rich history.  Go for a walk around Victory Park and check out some of the most beautiful homes of Stockton.

Only 4 stars, you wonder?  Because the hours are weird and the last time I went there, I felt like I was in a sauna!  By the time I was leaving, my eye makeup had melted and created a clever beard and had millions of sweat beads on my forehead.  I wasn't sure if I should say 'thank you, goodbye' to the receptionist or cover one eye and say,  'ARGH..... shiver me timbers!'

OK... maybe I'm exaggerating, but this is how MY memory serves me.

We decided to check out Haggin Museum because VIA magazine, Sunset magazine, & Huell Howser recommended it, plus it's FREE on the 1st Sat of the month.  I love FREE so we went.  Regular admission is $5 for adults.

If u want to take photos you are allowed but you need to fill out a waiver form: No Flash of any kind in the galleries, No photos of items on loan to the Haggin Museum, which when we went was the Plein-Air Painters of America.

The museum is not very big, we spent about 1.5 hrs here.

History Galleries:
Pioneer Rm: trace Stockton history from the time of early Native Americans to present day

Native American Gallery: artifacts from various N.A. cultures

Calif. Rm: early Calif. & Stockton history, including explorers, missions, & Gold Rush.

Storefronts: turn of the century Calif. shops & school.

Vehicle Gallery: early fire engines, including Old Betsy, & WW2 Willy the Jeep.

Victorian Hallway: 1890 homestead of Miss Jennie Hunter & family, prosperous wheat ranchers.

Holt Hall: Benjamin Holt's invention workshop & Caterpillar tractor.

Ancient Arts Gallery: Ancient Egyptian mummy  (it's Famous, but in a glass case) & artifacts from Greece, Rome, & Mesoamerica.

Art Galleries:

Hull: American western landscape paintings by Albert Bierstadt & other artists.

Haggin Rm: Realist & impressionist 19th century European & American paintings.

McKee Rm: European Realist & Orientalist paintings. (don't remember if I saw it).

Arcade: American landscape paintings (don't remember if I saw it).

Upper & Lower West: changing exhibits: Plein-Air Painters of America , now thru 1/6/08.  Nice oil paintings.

Bathrooms available.  They have a museum store.

In Victory Park, nice to walk around outside and check it out.  Small area outside for roses.  Pond for ducks, & a playground for kids.

Yeah, this is a great Northern California museum.  I am shocked Sacramento doesn't have a counterpart to compete, but there you are.  A reason to visit Stockton if you never thought to do it before!

Mummy.  Neat "nature art".  A room of art that features catholicism and muslim muses.  The best: the reconstructed "town" of Stockton on the basement floor.  This is awesome.  There's a Chinese herbalist, a western apothecary, a school house, a barbershop, a general store, a saloon...there are some reconstructed rooms from a genteel Victorian farmhouse in Linden, CA (complete with the creepy and uncomfortable Victorian furniture) and a really nice Native American section that actually covers tribes all over the US, but has a nice interspersed focus on the California tribes.

The art collection is really strong; both local and international names, and some famous folks like Renoir, Rodin and Gaugin are all featured 123--punch~! in the main room.

It's like families from Stockton nearby just handed over family heirlooms they didn't want to cart around, so there is a beautiful case full of Art Pottery from early 1900s.  There are buggies.  There are Holt Caterpillar tractors (and it walks you through their evolution).

One of the best things are the docents, and especially the ones down in the basement in the gift store, which is jampacked with great kids gifts.  Really great books, old paperdoll kits, and really great little knick knacks for the parentals.

FYI, Huell is covering it on Road Trip with Huell Howser tonight!

Also, every 1st Saturday is free admission, regular admission is only $5 (a steal!) and the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month are late dates; in otherwords, the Museum is open on those Thursdays until 9 PM.  Great news for folks who want to zip over there after work!

Love this place; a Stockton tradition, may it always be here to enjoy.  Bierstadt is one of my favorite's; majestic oils of Yosemite.  Of course I have to mention the mummy.  As a child it was my favorite thing to view.  There is also an amazing collection of farm equipment since the Holt Company has called Stockton it's home for many decades.  One of my favorite things to do at the Haggin is to attend a concert or recital. Chances are you will see & hear some local musicians-a real treat!  It's such a peaceful and culture filled place to listen to beautiful music.  The museum is our little jewel-a real local treasure; visit and support the Haggin...you don't have to drive to Sacramento to have a fine day at the museum!

Originally, I thought to dock the museum a star because a) their hours of operation are pathetic, and b)they no longer merely 'suggest' a donation, they demand it.
But then I remembered how much I love the Bierstadt paintings, how my sister and I spent countless hours seeing if we could ditch the old Asian man curator who shadowed us every visit (I swear he either teleports or is part of a set of quintuplets that all work there), how one of my favorite paintings ever, 'Sophistication' hangs there, and of course, how I was a child actor in one of their in-house videos to demonstrate new display-technologies... (hey, smiling and pushing a button and looking cute, while pretending to be amazed by a start menu is hard work!!!),.... so Haggin you're a class act, and a 5star commodity.

Last time I was there (a few months ago) there was no mummy, but I still think it was worth the visit. My favorite part of the museum is the history of good 'ol Stockton, the port, and they even have old high school yearbook pictures. How embarassing, right?

My family and I really enjoyed this museum. We moved from Florida and wanted to get to know our new community. The Haggin Museum was a great place to learn about it.  I love the exterior architecture, and the grounds are beautiful.  The inside was even more of a treat for the eyes. I like how the exhibits are set up. They gradually introduce different areas, instead of combining everything together. A little art here, a little history there. Didn't even know how much this city was developed by immigrants, and farmers. We went on a weekday, and there wasn't much of a crowd. We got a chance to read every thing, and that made the museum more enjoyable. They even have a real mummy there! Also a good collection of Native American artifacts. One of the security people there was really nice and answer all of our questions. This is such a great museum! It's just a wonder to me that some of the people that have live here their whole life have never been, or even heard about. If you are one of these people, you have to go!

Nice museum with a very nice park.  Great for the whole family.  Used to have a really scary mummy (I thought) when I was a kid.  Hope it's still there. . .

The Haggin is a really fine small museum. Their collection of early California art is stellar. Some of the most noteworthy early California artists are in their collection. I especially love the  Julian Rix and William Kieth paintings. I've told many people and will continue to tell many people about this little gem. It's a feature Stockton can be really proud of. I am currently participating in their juried show and the opening reception was one of the nicest receptions I've ever attended and all of the volunteers and people from the Stockton Art League were so gracious and kind. It's definitely worth the trip if you're from out of town and if you're from Stockton and have never been there shame on you. The rest of the museum is also really great.

This is a surprisingly good (but small) museum. There is a nice section on the history of Stockton and...of course...the now famous "mummy" :)

As a small child, my only memory was of the mummy. If I recall, in the '70s you were actually able to touch it....but, of course, times have changed and it is now sealed off in glass. Still, I wonder if the mummy will eventually be returned to Egypt since its journey to downtown Stockton and its acquisition by the museum may be somewhat dubious...
