I'm a recovering auto fanatic (I used to legally race cars and motorcycles) and feel that I'm very knowledgeable about them as I can do anything from swapping out a clutch, to modifying fuel injection mappings, to a minor engine overhaul type repairs.   Because of that and also being an internet nerd, dealing with dealers drives me crazy.  Most car salesman know nothing about cars and generally make my skin crawl.   For example, for my last car purchase I researched what I wanted to buy for over 6 months, knew exactly what options package I was looking for, and even had my financing setup ahead of time.   Even with all of that searching for a car was getting very frustrating and time consuming.

A friend recommended me to a contact at HM Brown, so I decided to give it a whirl.  I went down to their office to meet with my contact, and I was very impressed with her knowledge about cars, and was happy to talk to someone who could actually speak car lingo and understood exactly what I wanted.   It turned-out that I ended-up finding the car I wanted online but had them do the whole transaction, and it was very painless.

I've subtracted some stars for a couple of reasons--

1.  They are not clear about what they do or some of the extra services they provide.  They are a real car dealership, not just a broker, so naturally they do some of the things that car dealerships do (offer financing, try to get you to buy extra warranty coverage, etc.).  I did think about doing a warranty program since I knowingly bought a German car (they are notorious for having electronics which go on the fritz), but the package they were offering was more than 2x of what I saw on the internet.

In general, it just seems like they make extra money by selling you stuff and setting you up with financing rather than being an independent agent.  Basically I just feel like they don't disclose very much information... ie... "we are trying to sell this extra junk to you because they pay us $500 for every sale" rather than it being them working with a vendor which they felt was the best for your personal situation.

2. They are not very clear on how they make money.  I got a great price on my car, but a pretty lousy price on my trade-in which I felt was somewhat glossed over.  Overall I felt I got a pretty fair deal because I saved so much money on the car purchase and didn't waste much personal time getting the deal done, but I would have rather seen a line item for how much I actually paid them.

Despite these misgivings, I have no problem recommending them to friends and family, and do pass their name along every so often.  I would just like a little more transparency.

I HATE dealing with car dealers, and dickering over a price. I got the car I wanted, the color I liked, the features, etc., all for the price I wanted without having to step into a dealership. (OK, I did go to one and do a test drive). I highly recommend them... they even deliver the vehicle to you if you are too busy to pick it up!
