I have my hair permed straight with their liscio thermal reconditioning from My and it makes a pretty big noticeable difference.
Prior to straightening, my hair was frizzy, dry and has a lot of unwanted volume. I always wondered how those hair models do it because no matter what products I used, unless I straight iron my hair, my hair always looks dry.
Straight perming solves that problem. My hair is actually shiny now.
I have to thank My for being absolutely wonderful during the process. She's very talented with the scissors (14 years experience!). She's quick and is naturally very caring. (She also speaks 4 languages wow!)
I went in around 2pm on Sat, waited till around 2:40pm and didn't leave till around 8:30 pm. Here's a quick summary of what happened:
1. Quick talk about my hair. Length. Whether I ever permed it (no), colored (no), etc. How much I would like to cut off.
2. Hair wash!
3. Hair cut!
4. Hair wash again!
5. Scalp protection stick follow by chemicals hair straightening with checkup ever 15 mins.
6. Hair wash again!
7. Blow dry!
8. Straightening with straight iron. She literally pick up a small bunch of hair and straightened it with two different iron. The whole process here took 45 min at least.
9. More chemicals!
10. Hair wash!
11. Blow Dry
12. Hair trim!
I might've messed up on the order because there were just so many but My was meticulous through out. She stayed late (past closing time) to finish my hair. She is a wonderful and dedicated hair stylist.
Cost was definitely on the expensive side (not for a perm, but in term of general expenses) but that's ok. I haven't cut my hair, let along permed it in ages.
After reading all the glowing reviews for My, I finally cracked and made an appointment to have my hair thermally reconditioned again. I have only had it done in the Philippines, and have always been apprehensive of salons in the states. Their website was very helpful and informative, and educates you about the thermal reconditioning process, and after care instructions, and what products they recommend.
My treatment took 5 hours, and My was very sweet, and took her time, and did everything herself, I really don't like it when you get passed around, or have too many hands working on you. She was very detailed and would explain all the steps she was taking and products she was applying to my hair.
Although it has only been 3 days since my treatment, I was so pleased with the experience, that I just had to get my review out. Thanks My!
This review is for My. She is awesome!! I have never gotten such FANTASTIC results from Japanese straight perm anywhere else and I get it done annually. Yelp - you did not let me down this time...I am so happy I went to My. My hair is so shiny, silky, straight and sleek. She made sure not to touch my scalp with the chemical and was very careful not to let the hair burn because I have some hair that she knew was still straight from last year's perm. She would put the solution on those last and for less time. My totally devoted all 5 hours on my hair (unlike others who would have their assistant work on it and come check every 45 minutes while taking in walk-ins or other double booked appointments). I went in 10 minutes before my appointment and My helped me right away. FIVE STARS FOR MY!
Normally I would find the ends totally burnt that I would need to have a trim but this time it wasn't like that (although My did trim it for me at the end without additional charge). H-K salon uses the LISCIO system from Japan and it's top of the line...the stylist are all certified by Milbon to do the straight perm so this place is so popular for this.
The total for the straight perm was $225 (not including tips). They charge by length of your hair--I have semi long hair (to shoulder blades). I also bought a hair treatment from their Milbon line; My said this hair treatment will work wonders and I believe it cuz she used it on my hair after my perm...I have never had such shiny and bouncy hair...me so happy !!! TOTALLY WORTH IT....GO TRY IT OUT AND ASK FOR MY....TELL HER I SENT YA!!
Ever since I was a kid I wanted straight hair! After living with my curly hair for 35 years , I decided to give this a try. I had no clue where to go or what is the right product , salon etc. I posted my question on yelp and thanks to Olivia F.....I am just blown away by the awesome job hair stylist 'My' has done. I am not used to compliments for my hair but lo and behold...I have stranger coming to me at work and complimenting my hair...
'My' is so dedicated in her work...she did everything herself from start to finish...very nice person. She said she just needed to trim my hair but as she started...she noticed that I needed a good haircut....she spent 45 min and my hair looks nothing less than gorgeous....
Thanks My...You get a 5 star from me....this is a life changing event for me :)
When I came here, the only person I let touch my hair was Laura. I loved the way she cut my hair, and she would always made sure it looked how I wanted it to look. The only reason I stopped coming here was because even when I made an appointment with her, she'd book one or two other people at the same time as me, or take walk-ins right before, so I would wait a minimum of 30 minutes and she'd constantly be switching from cutting my hair to helping someone else. Other than this recurring scheduling problem, the price is good and her and her staff are good at what they do. I must also add that I LOVE it when they wash your hair for you, it feels so darn good!
First off, I hadn't realized until now that the place was called "HK Hair & Beauty." I always thought it was some miserable Chinese character I couldn't read and avoided straining my eyes.
This place was recommended by my friend who frequents it and at first, I was a bit leery of the place because of my past history with similar shops. In the past several years, I've lost my faith in Asian people cutting my hair. They either make me angry, cry or disturbingly unhappy afterward and I've avoided cutting my hair for some time but I couldn't stand the weight of it much longer so something had to be done.
I came in with a photo of exactly what I wanted; simple, clean, easily manageable. Though this didn't work out with other stylists before, I decided why the hell not give it another go. Maybe some miracle will happen. Turns out, the guy who worked on me was hilarious. A bit animated, but nevertheless sweet. He was able to cut my hair almost exactly as I wanted and was the first to make me blush with compliments about how beautiful my hair is. Most find it tedious with it being coarse and plentiful, but this person was the opposite of all others. He found it the best hair to work with...wow. That's a huge compliment! Anyway, the cut was even and he took his time making sure that it was what I wanted despite the language barrier between the two of us. I'd go back but only to him. I believe his name was Henry.
I just got my hair thermally reconditioned this weekend and I LOVE IT! Vy (pronounced Vee) is an absolute magician! I washed my hair for the first time today and it is life changing! I used to dread washing my hair because of the time it would take to style it, or I would resort to pulling it back in a tangled mess of a butterfly clip to hide what was the rat's nest of hair on my head. Today I got out of the shower and blow dried my straight, shiny locks in 7 minutes!!! If you have ever considered getting TR, go here! I did my research and the staff at H-K is trained and certified by Liscio (which is the best TR product on the market). Not only did Vy do a great job on my hair, but she is also incredibly funny and sweet, which is important considering the process takes hours. I will happily go back to Vy and H-K to get my hair touched up in the future. Thanks Vy!
I had thick frizzy hair so all I ever wanted was stick straight hair. I knew someone who had straightened her hair here. (I even thought she had naturally straight hair) I got an appointment on a Sunday morning. I was done after 5 hours. They really do a great job. It's worth your every buck. It's been more than a year now but my hair is still straight. Best of all..it looks so natural and even glossy and soft the first few months.
I even went back to have a hair cut. I don't usually go for the trendy and stylish haircuts because I would think that it won't suit me but I got it done here. It looks fab for sure!
I can't wait to go back for another haircut!
I got my hair straightened here by Laura and V about a month ago. They did a really good job and paid close attention to the details. They had to put the chemicals on in 3 different steps for (1) normal hair (2) dyed hair and (3) already straightened hair. The whole thing took five hours and cost me $220 plus tip. Yikes.
However, I wasn't too happy with the haircut that Laura gave me. It's too bluntly cut with not many layers. I guess since my hair is pretty straight now, it doesn't make too much of a difference.
After reading Yelp reviews and being frustrated at Shing's long wait, I decided to try out HK with My. She was friendly and spent time trimming my hair as I asked. But the hair cut was just OK. She was not too gentle with hair wash and combing ... but the unpleasant part though was she went ahead and colored my entire hair instead of a touch up I had requested. The result was not bad but I had to pay $100 for the job part of which I didn't ask for.
Bit of a stretch.
I've been going to a super expensive boutique stylist for the past 4 years, and boy do I wish that I could somehow recoop some of that money that I blew.
Based on my bridesmaid's (Catherine L.'s) recommendation, I decided to try out H-K and her stylist, My. She was extremely meticulous about her cuts, and she let me know exactly what she was doing every step of the way. I have very thick hair that gets frizzy, so it looks rather dry. Everywhere else I go, they always get me to pay more for some sort of hot oil/cream conditioner treatment. My flat out told me that my hair is actually not dry at all and that it only LOOKS dry because it's frizzy. All these years of paying extra...*accck* My could have easily suckered me out of some more dinero, but instead, she was very honest.
Overall, I am extremely pleased with my cut. I wanted to keep the length, and she was able to keep most of it while adding layers to my hair. People would comment that my hair was so thick that it looks like it's weighing down my head and face---now, it looks a lot "lighter" with much more texture! And the best part? The best cut I've had in a long while came out to be only $30!!!
I highly recommend trying out H-K. If you do, ask for My!
The best place to get your hair straightened! I got nothing more to say, except get your hair done here
I've had My cut my hair twice and loved it both times. She listens to my input, gives hers, takes her time to cut and style, and it's about $15 cheaper than my previous hairdresser. She doesn't try to sell me products and services, which I appreciate. Plus, My is a sweetheart. I'm sold!
so, with ALL this hype, I decided to get my much needed hair cut by My. They were nice, but the cut was not exactly what I wanted. Since my cousin (Adriana who moved to Main St. Annex Salon in Los Gatos) was formerly a hairstylist in Santana Row, I know their values and they are supposed to take mine into account to 'make the customer happy'.
WELL, since I want to grow my hair longer, I asked for trim (2 in.) and very little layers in the front, more layers around and showed 2 pictures from their mags.
What i received:
way too many layers 'framing' my face, which inevitably means it will take even longer now to grow out my hair! And my hair seriously takes 3 mo. to even get an inch!!
so, it really didnt look bad, but it was a totally different style than I expected, therefore earning the 3 stars. I even told after I didnt want that many layers in front, but she insisted it looks good on me and that she combined what i wanted with what she thought would look good.
but it looks better a month or so after it was done so im sort of over the layered fringe in front since it grew out a bit.
I was looking for a new haircut place earlier this year and turned to yelp to find the perfect place. I read the reviews about My and decided to book an appointment with her. I have to say, she is the BEST!!! I always get a great cut with her. She has great suggestions and gives a great head massage when washing your hair. Whenever I call last minute, she somehow works me into her schedule. I recommend this place and My to all my friends now. TRY IT!!!
they literally turned my hair pink AND my friends hair pink. We wanted dark reddish/brown high lights.. the color was PINK. It was humiliating walking around like that for a week till I got a REAL stylist to fix my hair.
After reading all the great reviews on this place, I decided to give it a try since I've been searching for a new stylist since I've gotten tired of the stylists at Shing's Hair Studio (I also tried Sandy at Salon de Paris, but her haircut was just ok.... maybe it was the picture I brought in....). I called today at 11:30 and asked for MAI, and she said she was booked all day today....
boohoo me, so I was disappointed but I really wanted to get my hair colored and cut, so I ended up going to Shing's Hair Studio across the street to see if I could squeeze in there (i've gotten my hair colored at shing's and one time it turned out great - when i dyed it chocolate brown with purple undertones...but when i tried to go for a light brown it turned orange......) ------ however, at 1230, as i was waiting in line at shing's to see if I could squeeze in somewhere, Mai calls me back saying she just got a cancellation and could fit me in at 1 --- score!
I told her what I wanted and she gave me her opinion on what she thought would most flatter my face shape and we kind of reached a compromise b/c she wanted me to leave my bangs long b/c i have a square/round face but I wanted tapered bangs that i could sweep to the side or lay flat, but I agreed to do longish bangs and long layers...
So she starts snipping away at my mane of hair, and suprisingly enough, she never touches the razor through the whole process. Hairstylists ALWAYS razor my hair because i have a LOT of hair and it's easier for them. and yes, it looks nice at first, but when it starts to grow out.....ugh, terrible.... i hated the razoring.... so that was nice that she didn't razor my hair even though it increased her time spent on me by like 3-fold because she even said herself that it grows out terribly wehn stylists razor hair!
during the whole process she would explain what she was doing and why and how it was going to look --- she was very friendly and easy to talk to adn i usually don't converse with my stylists
i also colored my hair --- i wanted ash brown but she adivsed me that it would turn my hair orange because my hair was dark... so i went for my usual reddish tones and select "garnet"-- a brownish violet, from the hair palette.
i also got talked into getting one of those hair treatments after the coloring that would make it shinier and my hair softer or something --- i was kind of skeptical, but it was only 20 bucks more and hey, that's just like a dinner out so i was like ok let's do it =P
she told me how to style my hair the quick n dirty way myself and for the cut + color + hair treatment the total came out to be 145 (including tip) and I came out happy --- ASK FOR MAI! she's great
Yay... I finally found a hairstylist that I trust with my hair!
I've been going here since summer 2006. The decor is very stylish and modern.
I personally recommend "My". I describe to her what type of cut I want, and I am pleased with the results. She knows what's in style and gives trendy cuts. Plus, she's friendly! I usually call the salon to make an appointment with her to make sure she's available.
For women, it's about $25 for shampoo, cut, and style. I say it's worth it for the results :)
Just got my haircut here over the weekend and decided to yelp about it. I've been here consistently for about a year.
Laura is excellent at her profession. I haven't had a bad haircut from here yet. I also recently changed up my hairstyle a bit, but it still came out perfect.
If you do get a haircut, definitely get the shampoo too. Instead of your standard 3 minute lather-rinse-repeat, they actually take the additional effort and give you a head massage. I always come out a bit lightheaded, but much much more relaxed than I came in.
The only downside is the long wait, even with an appointment. I have to call days early for an appointment on the weekend, and sometimes I have to wait long past it. But the cut/shampoo is worth the wait.
I'm a bit torn about sharing this place - because it will get more busy, and I'll have to wait longer. Oh well.
I had searched and searched for someone who can do 'accent highlights' or another name for them is 'peek-a-boo highlights'.
About 2 months ago I had Jack cut my hair at H-K Salon and he gave me such a great haircut that I just had to go back to see if they can do the highlights that I wanted. Laura and her staff were very professional, kind and attentive. The atmosphere is very chic and they are very clean (I'm picky). They explain everything they will do to your hair and they explain the products they use which is very helpful. You can also purchase the products there.
As far as the highlights go, I'm EXTREMELY pleased. I don't think I would of had the same results if I would of gone elsewhere.
I personally recommend this place.
I've sent a few people here based on other friends' reviews but never got a chance to go to H-K till today. The hair cut I got here was SOOOO much better than the ones I've gotten at Vidal Sassoon. I told the stylist exactly what I wanted and she executed it to perfection. All with somehow keeping almost the same length I started with. which I found very interesting since every time I've ever gotten a hair cut anywhere else I always end up loosing alot of length. I'll definitely be heading back here again.
After reading reviews on yelp, I decided to make an appointment for May to cut my hair. I didn't need anything crazy done, just to bring up my layers, thin out my thick hair, and side bangs. She took her time and did a GREAT job. My hair is light but still very full. May did an excellent job! She charged me 30 bucks for the haircut, because my hair was so long. I will totally go back again! I might even get a perm next time. :) Highly recommended!
I have been here several times over the last two years when I read all positive reviews about their Japanese Hair Straightening. Prior to that I had been in a wavy (hair) disaster going from one place to another with my unruly hair. I love going to HK Hair and Beauty because they give your hair the attention it deserves, Vy & Laura are very nice, and they'd charge you affordable and reasonable prices.
I've been here twice for haircuts, and I've walked away very happy each time. Great haircuts and a GREAT price! My two experiences were vastly different since I had two different stylists- one who had a long consultation with me before the scissors came out and another who did not engage that much but new exactly what I wanted. Yay! They could seriously charge more $ for their work, but I'm glad they don't.
They're also very honest about whether your hair is a good candidate for thermal reconditioning. I appreciate that honesty.
i've been going here since i've been in high school.
it's a lovely place, and i've seen it transform so much from what it was to what it is now, and it's a big improvement.
i've always gone to Mai. She's one of the best ones there, so you will need to get an appointment if you want her to cut it. (unless u want to wait like 2 hours like i did once! i was in need!).
She's very funny and she knows my whole family. why you might ask? cause i came home one day from there and my hair cut was really cute. Long with lots of layers. my mom loved it, so she decided to get her hair cut there the same day! same with my sister. after the ladies of the house got it done (and loved it!), my dad and bro decided to go. they've gotten their hair cut by the others there, but they've all come to realize that mai is the best so we all go to her now. while my aunt lived here, she also went to her. my uncle lives in pleasanton but drives all the way to get his hair cut STILL by mai. now my boyfriend enjoys his hair cuts there and so do a few of my gfs.
the only reason why i didn't give it the full 5 stars is because it is NOT a 5 start salon. yes, they massage your head and it feels great. but it's not very professional that they talk in their own language. I respect their culture, but sometimes you know they're talking about you.
anyways, if you go, ask for Mai. you won't be disappointed.
I said i wanted a trim and got a fade. Does anyone know how to just use scissors anymore? Stylist wasn't very friendly either. Oh well, i won't be back. I could've saved 16 bucks and gave myself a fade. Seems like there are some regulars there so i guess some people like it.
I got my haircut by My recently upon reading reviews here. I was quite happy with it. I didn't get anything dramatic, just layers without taking off too much length and fix my bangs. She talked me through what she was going to do before she started, and gave me a few suggestions on my hair. She did a nice job and took a lot of time on my hair, so I could tell she was actually paying attention and not rushing things. I don't tend to stay at the same hair salon for long, but I did like the cut she gave me. It was simple and clean and just as I asked.
[this is alvyn's sister. alvyn would never get a hair cut professionally]
this place was OK. my stylist was unfriendly [the young one, don't go to her!], but the other stylists seemed nice. my hair cut looked good when it was finished, but looked nothing like the picture i showed her. i think she wanted to cut my hair to match hers.
i'm saying it was ok because it was clean and they know what they're doing. the customer service was kinda whack. the prices are reasonable. hair cut is 22, with shampoo its 25. you should tell them if you only want a haircut cuz otherwise they're gonna wash your hair and charge you for it. i actually tipped her, i dont know why. probably just cuz she was watching me sign my atm reciept. i might give hairshaper's club on serra way another try.
came here on a recommendation from my cousin. i was waaayy overdue for a haircut.
i called on a saturday evening right before they were closing for an appt the next day. i asked for My cause well, i hear shes the best =] she was super nice and was able to fit me in at 12 on sunday.
i arrived early at 1130 the enxt day, and she got started at 1145! yay for earliness. the shampoo was nice. massage and all. i especially liked when she kinda massaged my neck. all those hours with my head buried in a textbook really kills my neck after awhile.
ANYWAY, i noticed that whoever i get a haircut from, it always turns out looking the same. probably the way i ask for it? [keep the length, layers, shorter bangs]. she hardly touched my length, just trimmed it a bit. good layering too. and i love my bangs right now...that is until they grow out =[
anyhoo, end results. i liked it. not LOVED it. but ive gotten a few compliments on it so far though. soo compliments to the stylist?
