My closet is probably 50% H&M. I've lived in Berkeley for a couple of years, and I've purchased zero items from this store. Come to think of it, I've returned one item I bought somewhere else...so they get an extra star for location convenience. I am a dude, so remember my review will only apply to dudes and dudettes that dress like dudes.
Everytime I come, I'm rather disappointed with the weak representation of the men's section. I know guy's sections at H&M are always smaller, but from the 7 H&M stores I've been to, this one has THE smallest mojo's for sure. And I feel like its H&M Rack judging from the lack of selection. If you're travelling far for this store, spend the $4 across the bridge to go into SF's store. Unless your styles old school like the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air", don't bother with this location.
Boooo!!!!
I went in the other day and store fully loaded with absolutely nothing I want!
Is it me? why does everything seem over sized, no shape to it clothing, maybe i just have such great taste that H&M is no longer within my liking?! (drives me insane)
the one and only thing I can always count on is a vast majority of accessories and all the earings are nickel free what a treat to my sensitive ears.
I realize that during this gorgeous weekend, I spent most of my day inside a dressing room. Actually, in H&M, it was about 45 minutes spent waiting to get into a dressing room. I sweated more carrying my 30 pieces of clothing and trying on 12 pairs of pants than I did running that morning at the gym. They are lucky I bought most of the clothes I tried on.
The clothes here are trendy and decent without a hefty price tag. I purchased 3x as many clothes here as I did at Anthropologie for 2/3 of the price. It's the price you pay for one store setting up a fitting room for you ... and H&M where I had to stand in front of a terrible couple flirting with each other. Ugly people shouldn't flirt.
Don't waste your time in this H&M. All the good stuff are at the H&M in San Francisco. The styles were just bad. I couldn't find anything even worth trying on.
This place has tons of stuff.
It's cheap, and not all of it is overly trendy. Yes, it's kind of "young", but I suggest giving it chance if you don't wanna spend a bundle and you have the patience.
My lil sis was pretty happy with it.
But boy does it get packed.. if you don't dig the crowds or standing in line for long periods at the dressing rooms- I suggest going during old lady hours.
H&M is listed as a ladies store, but there is guy's stuff there too. I took a long look for stuff inside for me.. and honestly I do wear clothing like that, but I was kind of miffed on really how silly it all is.
First of all.. must this overpaid horrible gang busting bouncer be on your chops at every moment?
Next... We all know trendy obsolete crap of hip-hop / rap clothing rags is totally dead.
Finally.. H&M is all about cheaply made, but it isn't cheap. Go in.. pick out five things to wear, and walk to the register - ching ching $$$ next thing you know that $29.90 + $39.90 + $19.90 + $35.90 + $49.90 item(s) and then the very last minute you decide to reward yourself with five earrings at $3.00 (err $15.00) has just set you back some pretty penny plus tax. That isn't the main problem of 154.50 but rather its the fact H&M maybe spent a buck each on those things... meaning they just profited almost all of it due to cheap labor.
Agh. Maybe it's because there is no men's rags. :/
I have found that in a case like retail, your opinion of the store depends on if you had a great find. In my case, I did. I go hot and cold on having good luck at retail clothing stores. Sometimes you just have to be in the right mood.
I ventured in here with SG while strolling in emeryville. I cant say that I needed anything in particular, but just thought I would look. I like the way H&M sets up their store. It is very clean and organized in a way that you can easily find coordinating items (a key for those of us challenged at it).
Needless to say, I got a super cute long Red coat. The quality is great. The style is very fashionable. The price is far lower than other places. Usually you would be sacrificing quality for price, but it seems like H&M does it right.
I am not some love-the-world-hippie chick or daisy-do-right that gives a shit about some child from a 3rd world country making a blouse, jacket, skirt..etc. for 25 cents an hour. So, I like H&M!
Not the best quality on some items, but cmon, those kids work hard.
Just bought a fucking awesome coat on sale from $70 down to $30.
How ya like me now coldness?
I'm think I'm gonna sit around in my house wearing my coat to save money on my PG&E bill too, because it's just that comfy and will essentially end up saving me more money in the long run.
H&M..stitches for poor bitches.
I went here when I was in desperate need of some retail therapy (this was pre-recession). Though it wasn't as awesome as the first H&M store I went to on Fifth Ave in New York (two stories), it was lovely. I went at lunch, so it was nice and quiet (relatively). They had some $5 sale going on, and had all sorts of fun, cool, 80's feeling items. Not bad. If I'm getting something artsy or silly, I'm more than happy to pay $5. I also got a couple pairs of blue jeans, and a year later, they are in great shape--nice material, and not cheaply constructed, either. The blouses are interesting, but a couple of the blouses ran on the small side, FYI (but that's typical for cheap-ish clothing). Hard to choose between this and Forever 21... When they put in a shiny new H&M in Fremont, then I can make a decision.
I like H&M because they've got cute, affordable clothes in small sizes. (Unfortunately, they tend to run out of the smallest size so I can't always get what I want.) The accessories are cute and cheap, too. The main problem I have with the store is the line to get into the dressing room. I don't think I've ever experienced a line that long in a clothing store before. If you go later in the evening, it's a lot easier to get in, so I recommend doing that.
Smells like sewage.
No.
I guess once you've been to the flagship store, you're spoiled. I kept looking around, wondering how to get to the other floors and where all the good stuff was.
I had time to kill and money to burn, and all I could find was a tank top. They had one cashier and 3 customers ahead of me doing complex returns. I put the tank top down and left. I can't even muster up a "Meh" for this place.
Wow, one word. RUDE.
I love H&M. I'm a frequent buyer because in comparison to their Forever 21 styles, they actually survive past 3 washes. I've been to their Walnut Creek location numerous times, and have gotten great customer service. The employees are very snappy. Bitch, i'm buying clothes from YOU. Two stars because I still love H&M.
Service here is terrible. And they will not let you enter the store 20 minute before closing. I can understand not allowing anyone to enter anymore by the hour mark, but 20 minutes before? And I experienced that more than once. That is the kind of self-serving attitude that retail (or any service occupation) does not need. Open until 8pm means OPEN UNTIL 8PM, not workers-need-to-be-able-to-leave-by-8pm. Bunch of LAZY WORKERS.
The only reason I don't give it a 1 is just because I like the store chain itself.
Sorry to say it ladies but I hate this store! I never find anything in my size that will look right on my body, let's not even go their with the Bra's again, lol! (Marc A. Know's) I can't even wear any of their jewelery because it all has Nickle in it and go figure I'm super allergic to Nickle! So the only time you ever catch me in this store is to help my best friend find something! SORRY!!!
AMAZING!
Emeryville's selection isn't the best but every other store you go to will have tons and tons and tons of selection and seriously is SO cheap! I love this store not only because its low priced, but because it has so many options. Note to first timers: the sizes are not normal sizes, so try stuff on before you guess one size and have to bring a whole new stack of clothes in the right size back to the dressing room.
BEST BUYS: my camel color fake-leather messenger bag.... I literally wear it every day and get compliments on it all the time!
Additional good buys: scarves, dresses, plain colored T's, jackets.... things that would normally be really expensive at most stores and at the other cheap places would fall apart, but not here... its perfect! :)
Whenever I travel to places outside of Denver, I make it my business to stop into an H&M. WHY Denver doesn't have one yet is beyond me... especially when I believe there's one in Cleveland.
Cleveland... but not Denver.
Come ON.
Anyhow... H&M used to be the coolest thing ever. Nifty clothes at reasonable prices. HUGE selection. Hip stuff. Now... well... there's a bazillion other stores that do the same thing. Forever 21 comes to mind. The prices at H&M aren't as cheapy-cheap as they used to be, and the clothes aren't as cooley-cool. A large percentage of their stuff is way too hoochie-mama for my tastes, while most of the rest is a touch too businesslike. Still, I'll continue to shop there whenever I can... mostly because we don't have one in Denver.
That said, next time I'm in the Bay Area, I'll be skipping this Emeryville store in favor of the big one in the City. The Emeryville store is way too small, with only the barest minimum of a men's department. The salespeople would rather talk to each other than talk to you, and changing room area is too tiny with too long a line. I didn't notice the poo smell that some other reviewers have mentioned, so I guess I can be thankful for that. Regardless, you'd be better off skipping this location. It's pretty lame.
I first heard of H&M from my best friend whom purchased a few pregnancy pieces and then sold it on EBay after she gave birth. The second time I heard about it was when I mentioned it to him and he said that H&M was all over the place and extremely popular when he lived in Germany.
After picking up a few pieces from Old Navy, I walked across to H&M and waited until 11 am, the time it opened. It was a tease, taking four steps to hit another department within the store. Walk in four steps and you get the ladies section. Walk in four steps to your right and you are in the juniors. Walk two steps to the right and your in a corner of men's clothes. From the Ladies section, walk in four steps forward and you get the dressing room.
Most items are well made, fashionable, and costly. I found two pieces that I was willing to pay for.
The workers could be more approachable. When I was there they were gossiping on last nights events. They were more interested in the story than being more attentive to ringing me up.
H&M is my fave clothing store but I wish the clothes would fit right. I am sometimes finding the fit in the clothes is off 2 sizes and for that I have to lug 20 outfits in the dressing room and emerge with 3-4 because I have to double up the amount of clothing just to get the right fit.
Wassup with the security guard at the door? Scary. I would think he would just stroll outside instead of standing there staring at me as I look through shirts and leggings. Shouldn't he be more closer to Bebe or Coach where stuff isn't dirt cheap?
But anyways, I digress. I love H&M and thats all I hafta say. Despite the long lines and attitudes from the females at the counter. :(
As a skinny dude who has trouble finding clothes that don't make me look like a little kid playing dress-up with his dad's suits, H&M is a godsend.
Trendy, fitted clothing at affordable prices? YES PLZ!!!
Too bad this specific H&M location has the crappiest men's section I've ever seen. Two or three racks off in a corner, and almost exclusively the worst stuff H&M has to offer. Sleeveless hoodies in M & L only? XXL leather jackets? Socks? Where are the fitted dress shirts, the casual sport coats, the trendy slacks?
Five stars for H&M as a chain, but this location is crappier than the Bush Presidency.
not that big of a H&M fan... but i think the best one in the bay area is the powell st. location in san francisco.
this place feels so unorganized and is just full of young (pre) teens...
I don't even know why I go to H&M. Everytime I fool myself into thinking I'll find loads of cheapy clothes and pay a visit to the store, I come out empty handed.
I was in the area, so popped in to check out their inventory (which is really sparse and not so fun, compared to the SF stores). Sales people were young and not overly helpful...typical mall rats with a 'tude.
I found some silly hats, earrings and the like, but no apparel tickled my fancy.
Well, except the sequin spandex dress on the $5 sale rack. Too bad that an H&M size 6 is a real person size 2 or I totally would've worn it to Pop Inn one night.
What is up with a small corner of the store passing as a Men's section!?!?
I like H&M... can we have a larger section for the guys, please?
It was 94 degrees and I needed an escape from the heat. When I realized that the H&M was now open, I decided to venture in and check out the short sleeved mens shirts. In I go. I turn to the right...well those clothes are clearly for women. I turn to the left, "oops, excuse me, sorry." No men's clothes in this corner either. I went from corner to corner and never found one stitch of men's clothing. All of the women kept giving me looks as if to say, "what are you doing in this section of the store?" "You're creepy." Then it happened, I realized that I was a male standing in a woman's clothing store without a female by my side or within arms' reach who I could pretend I was with. Yikes I felt like the ultimate perv.
Of course, when I related this story to a female friend she chimed in, "Oh that H&M doesn't have any men's clothes." Uh where were you when I needed you?
Shame! Shame! Shame! on you H&M for teasing me with displays that suggest that men's clothes are somewhere within your store knowing that I am never going to find them. Once outside I started to feel like a decent human being again. I will just have to limit my H&M excursions to the store in the city.
Size 6 Size 6 Size 6 Size 6
Clearly no one wears a size 6 because they are all on the racks of the freakin' poorly made black slacks that I'm trying to buy!
or the khaki slacks
or the brown slacks...
you get my drift.
Seriously, H & M has got a conspiracy to make me and my ghetto booty feel bad. Helloo? The majority of women in the United States wear a size 12 and above!!! Honestly, should we all start emailing them that statistic?
Anyway, I do love the fact that I can run into H&M 30 minutes before a date and get a cute outfit for less than 50 bucks. Of course I'd be happier if they had more than one pair of size 12 slacks on the rack. The downside is that after a wash in the laundry (yes one) you can't wear that shit again.
I consider the clothes at H&M to be affordable and fairly cool, albeit definitely low quality. Whenever I buy something here, I like to imagine Nigel in London or Bjorn in Oslo getting practically the same stuff.
Be warned though, the men's section at this location is ridiculously small and pretty mixed in with the ladies fashion. I almost tried on a ladies green hoodie before a kind female employee warned me otherwise. My initial thought was, "Why is this medium so small?" We shared a moment.
I would take H&M over The Gap every day of the week. 4 stars.
Is there a more frustrating store out there than H&M? I think not.
You know the drill. You're reading some silly fashion magazine when you get to the "Splurge or Steal" page - half the clothes are $500+, the other half are generally under $100. Typically, H&M dominates the latter half. Going strictly off the pages of the magazine, you convince yourself that H&M has super cute clothes that will make you look like you follow trends.
And then you get to the store.
And realize that it's more or less a classier Forever 21.
Except that nothing ever fits you.
So you hum and haw for about 20 minutes, deciding if $20 is a good enough price to for an ill-fitting Michael Kors knock off. Around minute 18, you decide that it isn't, put it back on the hanger, and skulk out of the store.
Just me? Oh, fine then. Enjoy your clothes, super skinny or super curvy girls! We girls in the middle can do JUST FINE at Gap or BR or even Target. So there!
(All complaining aside, in the zillions of trips to this store, I have only ever bought FOUR things. FOUR things that have actually fit me properly. And obviously, frugality wins out and I wear them to death.)
Addendum: Bring your nunchucks. Those high school chicks come ready to shop at this cramped store with pointy elbows out.
I don't get it. Sometimes I think I am the only girl who doesn't think this store and its clothes are "the cat's pajamas." But I want to. I really want to be cool and like this store. My dear friend Lea B., my former roommates, and a few other close friends look so cute in their clothes. And, gah, I just don't feel it...I think I know why:
a) I'm not a skinny bitch.
b) The store is overwhelming and I just have no patience to look for anything.
c) I am actually quite boring with my clothes. By "boring," I mean, like, how Jeanine Garafolo (sp?) has to wear boring clothes for her Gap job in "Reality Bites" kind of boring. Weird prints. Fugly colors. Assymetry (I %$#@ING HATE ASSYMETRY). Uneven hemlines. Textures. Embellishments. I hate them all...and this store is full of that garbage. I just cannot allow myself to wear it. Why? Have you MET me? I'm a big enough of a horse's ass on my own; I don't need to be more obnoxious with obnoxious clothes.
d) Let's assume that I find something I like, it will, at most, be just one thing. I will then look at lines for either the fitting rooms or the cash register, get discouraged by their length(s), and then place my clothing item at a convenient rack (which is likely nowhere near where I found it), and leave.
Then (e) will happen. I will remember that I am not a skinny bitch, drown my sorrows in a dozen cupcakes at Tea Cake across the street, and then further condemn myself further from skinny bitch-ness.
=(
BUT, I am a true-to-form stubborn Taurus girl. Every payday, I will relentlessly go back to H&M in hopes of finding something worth buying.
And, wouldn't you know it? Last month, that FINALLY happened. I had been in the market for a long wool coat for quite some time. And I found a sweet one here for just over $100. I mean, just look at it* http://static.px.yelp.... Hot, right? I mean, it totally covers up not being a skinny bitch. Just don't get the same one as me and try to wear it to a DYL at the same time as me. We only children don't share spotlights well.
*Individual results may vary. Angelo F. and Campbell's soup not included.
Seemed like more clothes on the floor than on the rack. Long lines for the waiting rooms and registers.
Control the teenagers! Raging hormones everywhere...
Oh wait, what was I doing there?
Carry on then.
I really wanted to like this store.
I've come in several times, I've probably also spent several hours in here, but I can't say i really like their clothes. I've only bought some basic tees, made out of cheap fabric, for really low prices.
The sizes are small and inconsistent, most of their clothes are made out of polyester or viscose, and the style is really off! Once in a while you'll find something nice. I've heard their button down shirts are nice, however, I've never purchased one. I even heard this really skinny emo girl comment on how much she loves their bras. And I really liked the pleather H&M jacket Natalie Portman wore in Elle. They have some cute jackets that are reminiscent of the Members Only style jackets that was popular decades ago. But I guess that's all I can really say.
Actually, on second thought, it's not that i don't like H&M, but this store has VERY poor selection. Check out SF if you want something nice.
I almost freaked out when my total came to a little over $100. I only stopped in for some accessories. But, of course, there was a sale and I loaded up on a sweatshirt, a top (that I'll probably never wear), 8 pairs of sunglasses, 3 scarves, and some things for my hair. The tops were what really did me in. I usually come in for just the accessories, but this place has that Target-affect on me where I walk in and just HAVE to look at everything else.
The sunglasses here are decent and cheap. I break enough of them to know- but like that they have more than decent UV protection. And generally the other accessories are pretty fun and decent to choose from. If the selection doesn't cut it for me, there's always Claire's across the street.
The Emeryville location isn't known for their speedy or friendly customer-service, but that's what you get for shopping in Emeryville, I guess. But at least they TRY to keep the store orderly and tidy.
Last year, I found some great dresses from this place. They were perfect for going out. Since then, I go into this H+M location every time I visit Bay Street, but I never find anything.
Most of their clothes are for thin women with no boobs. That means I have to get a size 6 (!) to fit my chest but the clothes are very loose in the waist. That does not work for me.
The prices are all right, and they sell very trendy stuff, so I do not mind when it falls apart by the end of the season.
Oh H&M.
I remember when we first met. This was long before you made the long trek across the Atlantic. Back in the day, when I was a fancy-free college student in Barcelona for spring break. So cool! So cheap, back when Euros weren't $1.50. You were still known as Hennes & Mauritz.
Then when I lived in Germany, you were like Old Navy. Dependable, I mean, everyone wore it, but kind of fun, one would go every so often, whatever.
I think you followed me here, H&M. And I understand that you were obviously concerned about losing a trusted customer to the US...but really, was this necessary? Maybe you were just missing Ikea. Do we really need another cheap chic store in the US? It just ENCOURAGES us.
And I have to say...your quality has decreased, pretty significantly since you've been here. This location, in the Bay Street mall...well, it's a new low. Shopping here on the weekend is tantamount to death by stampede, with the stampeding crowd being made up of 4 million 13 year olds. Kill me now. Never again. I'm breaking up with you.
As the saying goes... you get what you pay for. So if you want quality... shop somewhere else and stop complaining.
Why only 2 stars?
Very rarely can I even find anything to buy since the guys section at this H&M is reduced to not even one little corner of the store.
For a chain retail store, this place is just average. Average clothes somewhat poor quality and inexpensive.
I don't understand why they don't carry a size 0. The smallest size that I could find in tops and dresses was a size 2, which is just huge if you're petite.
I don't get the hype about this place. Its so blah. Plain and cheap. I'd rather opt for Forever 21...comparable prices and quality, but at least they have cuter stuff.
I finally checked out H&M and walked out with NO clothes but tons of accessories. The clothes look cheap like they wouldn't last past 3 washes. I didn't bother trying anything on. I did like the jewelry which were really cute and for a great price. I will def check this place out again for some scarfs and jewelry.
Bloody hell.
I waited 9 months staring longingly at a large sign covering the store front to what was to become the H& M at Bay Street- trying with all my might to will the damn place open. I was brought to tears several times.
On many days I passed by that same sign wondering what or rather when the hell did "Spring 2007" mean? Would H& M abide by the calendar? Could I expect to bask in the glory of H&M on March 20th? I obsessed on this question. Cruel bastards- It was March 24th already- - I was depressed to say the least. Emeryville shopping is enough to give anyone suicidal ideations. Not to mention that I continued to dwindle my earnings at the Banana Republic while also bringing home clothes that reminded me of my 7th grade wardrobe from Old Navy. According to the plans, means, prior resources model, someone should have 5150'd me.
And then suddenly it was open. No warning. No party. No Madonna to sign the track suits she had "designed." (So I attempted to will this to happen as well.) Not even any freakin balloons.
I felt like I had been a nanosecond away from jumping off the Bay Bridge only to be yanked off by homeland security while simultaneosly pissing myself.
I was rescued by H & M. I wish they had come a little earlier- but I'll take it. Shaking, crying, cold and sweaty- I'll take it.
Granted I'll destroy the clothes quickly and I'll become exacerbated when while standing in line at Tea Cake Bake Shop, when I spot 3 other people wearing the same shirt. But god dammit, it feels good to be alive.
I stumbled upon Emeryville H&M's opening day (4/5/07) by happenstance. There weren't crowds of people inside, as one would expect, so, just a few hours after opening, I sauntered in. I witnessed the rare and beautiful phenomenon of a neat and orderly (dare I say pristine?), H&M, you know, clothes hanging neatly in place on hanger; clothes folded nicely in stacks, arranged precisely by color and size. It was a sight to behold.
I was able to browse very leisurely, with plenty of space between me and my neighboring shoppers, and without getting irked by teenage girls pawing their way through everything and hysterical types climbing over my head. My only minor gripe is that someone exactly my size had whipped through the store before me, and snatched up a lot of the clothes in my size! Also, I wanted to check out, but didn't see in this store, Madonna's current line of clothing. Maybe I missed it.
But those minor complaints are of no consequence.
It was a blissful and eerily tranquil H&M shopping experience. I walked away with three spring-summer blouses and some cute hair accessories. And a free H&M tote bag for being there on opening day.
I realize that my H&M experience was a once in a lifetime thing, and that I will likely never, ever, have such a blissful experience there again. But it's of no concern to me - I had my moment in the sun with H&M.
H&M & Miu M. 4-ever
Spring 2007
Disappointed
Everytime I walk past H&M (this location only) I'm always hopeful that I will find something. I don't know how many times I've walked out empty handed. =( The staff is obviously underpaid (or they think they are)...you can tell they hate their job and they hate you. I don't know if anyone else has experienced this...but the store always has a strange, musty, poo poo smell. Definitely does not make a pleasant shopping trip. I walk out faster than I walk in.
My first experience with H & M thankfully was not here. It was in germany. Where they had the cream of the crop when it came to H & M AND they had not one, not two, hell not even three, but four H & M's on one street....all within walking distance.
Then this old rinky-dink store opens. SOo...Lets discuss. Its crowded, there's no customer service, the lines are HELLA long. Things just seem to be all over the place
