Granted it's not a giant two-floor store like it's big brother over in San Francisco, This H&M holds it's own pretty well. It isn't a huge store by any means, but it's decent sized. As far as a men's selection, we just got lucky, as what was once the men's corner is now the men's section of the store. You'll find all of the basics and things a step above here. I highly doubt it's the FULL men's selection, but there are still great things here.
I can't really complain about the customer service here. 8 times out of 10, I get greeted by at least ONE employee and the folks at the cash point always help me out. -

Why can't Yelp have negative stars?
This garbage hole not only sells the tackiest crap made in sweatshops around the world, they are thieves as well. My son, for some unknown reason, bought me a sweater for Christmas here. I tried to return it yesterday. I had the original receipt.
They gave me a store credit card for half the amount. I asked why and they said the receipt had "expired" so they could only give me credit for the amount the item was on sale for now.
Note to H&M - this is a strong-arm robbery, plain and simple. I have never heard of a receipt "expiring." The IRS would honor the receipt and so should you.
I spoke to the manager, got no help. Got a customer service number, will call tomorrow.
Next call to make: to my son to tell him to never buy me anything at this tacky place again. -

Yikes! I think I just had my WORST shopping experience of all time today [maybe I'm exaggerating a little]! It was really at the cash register where things went badly, not that the rest of the store wasn't shitty, don't get the wrong idea. I walk up and the cashier says "Hi" in a the most monotone, unfriendly voice I have ever heard, tells me my total (while completely avoiding eye contact) and practically throws the bag in my face. Even with the unnecessary attitude, I decide to be nice anyway and give a friendly "Thank You" as I walk away, do I get a "You're welcome"? No, of course not, they didn't even look my way. I feel like I was pushed out of the store.
Listen, I get it, I work retail too. I know it's the holidays and it's busy and customers suck, but seriously, come on! I'm going to give you two stars still, though, because while I'm irritated by the experience, I'm going to assume that you were just having a bad day and H&M wouldn't hire someone that awful. -

Okay so I totally love H&M, but this location is always packed and is always out of sizes. You would think that they would realize that if there are always size 0 left on the rack of every single thing in the store, you should order more of the other sizes! And the dressing room always has a line... so not worth it. There are other locations that are much better to shop in, like Pleasanton, Walnut Creek & SF. This review is for this location only!

Wow, this is probably the worst H&M I have ever been to. First, this is a small store. And being that it is a small store, you'd think it be a bit tidier than the others. Totally wrong. This is the MESSIEST H&M. The one on Powell is pristine compared to this one. The selections here suck. Tonight was my second visit, and definitely the last, and the music was so f'ing loud. And this is coming from a person who plays music loud and goes to a lot of concerts. I want to try to shop and not go deaf. Never again.

H&M has a decent selection of clothing and most of it is pretty fashionable. However, that's where the pros end and the cons begin.
First, none of the employees at this location will greet you or ask you if you need assistance, even if you spend a long time in there browsing. I don't have a big problem with that fact but greeting and engaging is customer service 101.... Also, when you get to the counter you're treated like you're being herded out of the store. They don't ask if you found everything you were looking for, they don't care about offering add-ons or anything.
And to top it all off, prices are not competitive. Old Navy (which I might add is across the street) offers essentially the same apparel at a better price point with friendlier staff. -

I've had the luxury of being able to shop H&M Sweden so coming back to the US and seeing the quality was disappointing and it has only continue to decrease as the years go by. Once in a while you'll find 1 item that is made decently. If you want something trendy come here but know that it will not last.

I agree with the others. This H & M has the worst people working. I tried to return a Christmas gift (w/ receipt) and the cashiers were rude, unprofessional and clueless. The girl that "helped" me has absolutely no customer service skills. She was so proud to tell me that she has been in retail for four years. I politely congratulated her and told her to go back to school to improve her "skills" .

I haven't been shy stating how bummed I have been by H&M over the past years.
Been to the Emeryville location now several times and I'm a convert! Today I scored a TON of on-trend goodies, nothing over $25!
-neutral tencel dressy shorts $17.95
-basic long racerback jersey tank $7.95
-organic cotton cardi $19.95
-flesh colored silk cardi, on sale $20
-printed romper $14.95
-tasseled tunic $24.95
-pink & flesh strapless pencil dress $19.95
Key: ALL machine washable.
From SF, Santana Row, Stoneridge, Boston, Spain, this one has the best selection of unorganized clothes with smaller sizes available!!!
Yes the customer service at the registers could be better, I liked the gals in the dressing room just fine and true, no one to greet me at the door, hey at these prices, the CLOTHES wave to me, no need for a human to engage. -

The store has made some improvements recently, namely the expansion of the menswear section. The staff is indifferent, just there to get you in and out. Sometimes the lines to get a dressing room are ridiculous. I've been to better stores but this one will do when I'm in the area.

None of the employees ever offer me any assistance when I'm here. Which is okay since I prefer shopping without employees hovering over me. But you know, I'd like it if they did put some effort into uh...customer service. CUSTOMER SERVICE. SERVICE THE CUSTOMERS. Please.
But moving on. The store isn't terribly big. Until recently, a majority of the store was filled with women's clothes, but the back half of the store now has more menswear. The old section for menswear was really just a tiny corner. A corner. I'd see guys walk into the store and get all confused because they couldn't find the men's clothes. And when they did, you could always hear them say something like, "This is IT?"
Um, so. The security guard is always nice to me. He's just about the only one to ever greet me. -__-"
And...I think that just about does it? -

The location is small, so the selection is small as well, the staff are't overly friendly or approachable, but if you ask for something they are efficient.

It's stocked nicely.
But if I can quote what 1 star stands for, "Eek! Me thinks not!"
My sister's friend's bag of Victoria's Secret items were stolen in 2 seconds. Messed up. I never come here, if I do, I clutch my bag for dear life. I feel safer in Richmond [I grew up there] than i do here. Workers or management didn't give it a second thought. -
Review from Denise F.
I honestly don't see why everyone is so crazy about H&M...they have SOME cute stuff here, but I could never fill up multiple shopping bags like I could at other stores...
The quality of their stuff is decent for the price, but you really do get what you pay for, and I wouldn't bet on anything from here lasting more than one season. Its more of a "quantity over quality" type place, where you could get a ton of stuff for cheap. I think there are better stores out there that are in the same price range, but have better selection &/or better quality, such as Arden B., Wet Seal, or even Macys.
The store layout was also really confusing, there are different sections in he store, but..there isn't really anything that makes these sections into actual sections..its like they just add spaces & the business/dress/club/casual clothes are all jumbled together like a garage sale..very weird. Also, they had men's clothes too, I was surprised..but it was a really tiny area with basically nothing to be desired, they shouldn't even bother with the men's stuff, because they're failing horribly. Just quit while you're ahead. -
Review from Tracy N.

This store was a mess. It was hard to find any particular order to the clothes laid out, except that the men's section was right by the changing room (which they had far too few of for such a popular store in a popular location).
I decided to skip the long weight to try on my clothes (luckily they fit :)) and headed for the long register line. I got in the shorter of the two lines, yes they only had two registers open despite the extreme business on the place and having four registers on the counter...Somehow I always manage to choose the shortest line that then decides to move the slowest. After standing in line for 20 minutes I finally make it to the counter and the cashier walked away! It was so angering, and after that she had the audacity to be rude to me.
I like H&M but I would avoid this location. -

I made away with a few good items recently, but not without effort.
The fitting room was very hot, and I had to try on far too many jeans / shirts to get into the right size. It seems a Large for one shirt fits very differently than a Large for the exact same shirt. The inconsistency was somewhat annoying... but then again, that's probably how all clothing manufacturer's do it.
In the end, at least I found something that worked. For the most part, the staff was somewhat aloof and didn't seem to care too much for their shoppers... which can be a good and bad thing.
Good: leave me alone to do my own shopping
Bad: do you have any extra sizes in the back?
At some point, I'll probably go back there to pick up another set of jeans... a hard find these days.
3 Stars! -

I walked in and saw only women's clothes. This was expected. But then I searched... and searched... where's the... oh there, in the back corner.
A couple of jackets, some jeans, and a few shirts = the smallest men's section I have ever seen in my life. All of us guys who were looking for clothes were comically cordoned off, picking over a few unremarkable plaid shirts in the middle of a (comparably) vast expanse of women's clothes. Is the market for men's fashion really that small in Berkeley? -

Best service by far of all the other H&Ms I ever been to. I wish I gotten her name. She was awesome. She pointed out that the bracelets were sized and got the right size for me. She also told us we can grab another pair of sunglasses because it was going to be basically be free. She was courteous, professional and great! I wish I got her name.
I been to many other H&Ms, yes their men's selection was tiny, but I am not a man. So yay. My fiance found some great items even though the selection was slim pickings.
To the manager of the store:
Cashier 036711 on Register 4 around 3:38 PM on Fourth of July needs a praise and raise.
I have always experienced horrible service at all the H&Ms I been too (refer to H&M Milpitas) but this one was the exception. -

From a guy's perspective, it was fairly disappointing to say the least.
Last I checked, H&M covers both genders. This one is obviously tailored for the ladies. My girlfriend was pretty happy with the selection, not to mention the prices. But again, I was rather disappointed.
You've got maybe a studio apartment's space of mens apparel and accessories, and you've got the rest of the store with female tailored items. What's up with that? Frankly, I think they're missing out on some easy money here. I know H&M carry some excellent items for men, as I've been to ones out of state in Chicago and New York. Is this a west coast thing? New here, forgive my ignorance.
Suffice to say, I'm sure the girls find the items and prices very competitive and attractive. But if you're a guy lookin' for something, keep your expectations low. -
Review from Richard R.
San Francisco, CA
It was 94 degrees and I needed an escape from the heat. When I realized that the H&M was now open, I decided to venture in and check out the short sleeved mens shirts. In I go. I turn to the right...well those clothes are clearly for women. I turn to the left, "oops, excuse me, sorry." No men's clothes in this corner either. I went from corner to corner and never found one stitch of men's clothing. All of the women kept giving me looks as if to say, "what are you doing in this section of the store?" "You're creepy." Then it happened, I realized that I was a male standing in a woman's clothing store without a female by my side or within arms' reach who I could pretend I was with. Yikes I felt like the ultimate perv.
Of course, when I related this story to a female friend she chimed in, "Oh that H&M doesn't have any men's clothes." Uh where were you when I needed you?
Shame! Shame! Shame! on you H&M for teasing me with displays that suggest that men's clothes are somewhere within your store knowing that I am never going to find them. Once outside I started to feel like a decent human being again. I will just have to limit my H&M excursions to the store in the city. -

I am not some love-the-world-hippie chick or daisy-do-right that gives a shit about some child from a 3rd world country making a blouse, jacket, skirt..etc. for 25 cents an hour. So, I like H&M!
Not the best quality on some items, but cmon, those kids work hard.
Just bought a fucking awesome coat on sale from $70 down to $30.
How ya like me now coldness?
I'm think I'm gonna sit around in my house wearing my coat to save money on my PG&E bill too, because it's just that comfy and will essentially end up saving me more money in the long run.

Size 6 Size 6 Size 6 Size 6
Clearly no one wears a size 6 because they are all on the racks of the freakin' poorly made black slacks that I'm trying to buy!
or the khaki slacks
or the brown slacks...
you get my drift.
Seriously, H & M has got a conspiracy to make me and my ghetto booty feel bad. Helloo? The majority of women in the United States wear a size 12 and above!!! Honestly, should we all start emailing them that statistic?
Anyway, I do love the fact that I can run into H&M 30 minutes before a date and get a cute outfit for less than 50 bucks. Of course I'd be happier if they had more than one pair of size 12 slacks on the rack. The downside is that after a wash in the laundry (yes one) you can't wear that shit again. -

I consider the clothes at H&M to be affordable and fairly cool, albeit definitely low quality. Whenever I buy something here, I like to imagine Nigel in London or Bjorn in Oslo getting practically the same stuff.
Be warned though, the men's section at this location is ridiculously small and pretty mixed in with the ladies fashion. I almost tried on a ladies green hoodie before a kind female employee warned me otherwise. My initial thought was, "Why is this medium so small?" We shared a moment.
I would take H&M over The Gap every day of the week. 4 stars. -
Review from Meg T.
So since changing sizes I'm more apt to step into an H&M.
Why?
Well the black top I inherited from Best Friend #1 is the same black top I wore to the Gaga party and like three other times the same week.
I love it.
So for their simple black skirts and tops, the basic wardrobe additions, this place can work it out for cheap (if you find them on the sake rack).
However this store in particular wasn't all that nice. It was shaped funny, with lots of walls closing in like a maze. Their sale stuff was also spread out in several different "rooms" and their dressing room? Don't even get me started.
There's around four rooms (from what I could see, waiting on the bench) and a huge wall so you have to walk in a U shape to get to them.
Fire your contractor ladies, he effed the hell up.
Otherwise, meh. I'd stop in for the sales. -
Review from Polly R.
This place has tons of stuff.
It's cheap, and not all of it is overly trendy. Yes, it's kind of "young", but I suggest giving it chance if you don't wanna spend a bundle and you have the patience.
My lil sis was pretty happy with it.
But boy does it get packed.. if you don't dig the crowds or standing in line for long periods at the dressing rooms- I suggest going during old lady hours. -
Review from Devon F.
Is there a more frustrating store out there than H&M? I think not.
You know the drill. You're reading some silly fashion magazine when you get to the "Splurge or Steal" page - half the clothes are $500+, the other half are generally under $100. Typically, H&M dominates the latter half. Going strictly off the pages of the magazine, you convince yourself that H&M has super cute clothes that will make you look like you follow trends.
And then you get to the store.
And realize that it's more or less a classier Forever 21.
Except that nothing ever fits you.
So you hum and haw for about 20 minutes, deciding if $20 is a good enough price to for an ill-fitting Michael Kors knock off. Around minute 18, you decide that it isn't, put it back on the hanger, and skulk out of the store.
Just me? Oh, fine then. Enjoy your clothes, super skinny or super curvy girls! We girls in the middle can do JUST FINE at Gap or BR or even Target. So there!
(All complaining aside, in the zillions of trips to this store, I have only ever bought FOUR things. FOUR things that have actually fit me properly. And obviously, frugality wins out and I wear them to death.)
Addendum: Bring your nunchucks. Those high school chicks come ready to shop at this cramped store with pointy elbows out.Listed in: She's got legs, and she knows…

I guess once you've been to the flagship store, you're spoiled. I kept looking around, wondering how to get to the other floors and where all the good stuff was.
I had time to kill and money to burn, and all I could find was a tank top. They had one cashier and 3 customers ahead of me doing complex returns. I put the tank top down and left. I can't even muster up a "Meh" for this place. -

Oh H&M.
I remember when we first met. This was long before you made the long trek across the Atlantic. Back in the day, when I was a fancy-free college student in Barcelona for spring break. So cool! So cheap, back when Euros weren't $1.50. You were still known as Hennes & Mauritz.
Then when I lived in Germany, you were like Old Navy. Dependable, I mean, everyone wore it, but kind of fun, one would go every so often, whatever.
I think you followed me here, H&M. And I understand that you were obviously concerned about losing a trusted customer to the US...but really, was this necessary? Maybe you were just missing Ikea. Do we really need another cheap chic store in the US? It just ENCOURAGES us.
And I have to say...your quality has decreased, pretty significantly since you've been here. This location, in the Bay Street mall...well, it's a new low. Shopping here on the weekend is tantamount to death by stampede, with the stampeding crowd being made up of 4 million 13 year olds. Kill me now. Never again. I'm breaking up with you. -

not as big as some of the other h&m's ive been to and definitely not the best in being clean and organized. this location seems to change their layout more often than the other stores too, i found myself looking through male shirts a few times.
as for customer service, i guess you cant expect much for a cheap clothing store?
they have a guy at the front that looks like a doorman, but he didnt open doors. im guessing he's security that h&m hired. -

Emeryville, CA
H&M is listed as a ladies store, but there is guy's stuff there too. I took a long look for stuff inside for me.. and honestly I do wear clothing like that, but I was kind of miffed on really how silly it all is.
First of all.. must this overpaid horrible gang busting bouncer be on your chops at every moment?
Next... We all know trendy obsolete crap of hip-hop / rap clothing rags is totally dead.
Finally.. H&M is all about cheaply made, but it isn't cheap. Go in.. pick out five things to wear, and walk to the register - ching ching $$$ next thing you know that $29.90 + $39.90 + $19.90 + $35.90 + $49.90 item(s) and then the very last minute you decide to reward yourself with five earrings at $3.00 (err $15.00) has just set you back some pretty penny plus tax. That isn't the main problem of 154.50 but rather its the fact H&M maybe spent a buck each on those things... meaning they just profited almost all of it due to cheap labor.
Agh. Maybe it's because there is no men's rags. :/ -

For a chain retail store, this place is just average. Average clothes somewhat poor quality and inexpensive.
I don't understand why they don't carry a size 0. The smallest size that I could find in tops and dresses was a size 2, which is just huge if you're petite.
I don't get the hype about this place. Its so blah. Plain and cheap. I'd rather opt for Forever 21...comparable prices and quality, but at least they have cuter stuff. -

Berkeley, CA
I stumbled upon Emeryville H&M's opening day (4/5/07) by happenstance. There weren't crowds of people inside, as one would expect, so, just a few hours after opening, I sauntered in. I witnessed the rare and beautiful phenomenon of a neat and orderly (dare I say pristine?), H&M, you know, clothes hanging neatly in place on hanger; clothes folded nicely in stacks, arranged precisely by color and size. It was a sight to behold.
I was able to browse very leisurely, with plenty of space between me and my neighboring shoppers, and without getting irked by teenage girls pawing their way through everything and hysterical types climbing over my head. My only minor gripe is that someone exactly my size had whipped through the store before me, and snatched up a lot of the clothes in my size! Also, I wanted to check out, but didn't see in this store, Madonna's current line of clothing. Maybe I missed it.
But those minor complaints are of no consequence.
It was a blissful and eerily tranquil H&M shopping experience. I walked away with three spring-summer blouses and some cute hair accessories. And a free H&M tote bag for being there on opening day.
I realize that my H&M experience was a once in a lifetime thing, and that I will likely never, ever, have such a blissful experience there again. But it's of no concern to me - I had my moment in the sun with H&M.

Bloody hell.
I waited 9 months staring longingly at a large sign covering the store front to what was to become the H& M at Bay Street- trying with all my might to will the damn place open. I was brought to tears several times.
On many days I passed by that same sign wondering what or rather when did "Spring 2007" mean? Would H& M abide by the calendar? Could I expect to bask in the glory of H&M on March 20th? I obsessed on this question. Cruel bastards- It was March 24th already- - I was depressed to say the least. Emeryville shopping is enough to give anyone suicidal ideations. Not to mention that I continued to dwindle my earnings at the Banana Republic while also bringing home clothes that reminded me of my 7th grade wardrobe which comprised of collars and khaki. According to the plans, means, prior resources model, someone should have 5150'd me.
And then suddenly it was open. No warning. No party. No Madonna to sign the track suits she had "designed." ( I attempted to will this to happen as well.) Not even any balloons.
I felt like I had been a nanosecond away from jumping off the Bay Bridge only to be yanked off by homeland security while simultaneously peeing my pants.
I was rescued by H & M. I wish they had come a little earlier- but I'll take it. Shaking, crying, cold and sweaty- I'll take it.
Granted I'll destroy the clothes quickly and I'll become exacerbated when while standing in line at Tea Cake Bake Shop , I spot 3 other people wearing the same shirt. But god dammit, it feels good to be alive.
