Gyu-Kaku I love you!!!!!!!!!! One of the places I crave when I go to NYC!

It's very unique, an a-la-carte menu style, where you order small plates of meats and vegetables to grill yourself! I love harami skirt steak and kalbi short ribs are among my favorites. Also, their mushroom medly is good! But I have to say my absolute favorite thing there is the grilled salmon! Ah thinking about it makes me want to drool!  The flavor and the meat is perfect!  Also, a must try is the garlic noodles! Delish! For dessert, you must try the green tea crepe cake, AMAZING!!! One of the best desserts I've ever had in my life!

Great place to bring a large group of friends! Great food and service! Definitely worth the money!

Have been wanting to eat here for a while. Finally did and accidentally did so during happy hour. Sweet. Really the best time for your wallet to go. Nice waitstaff, good food. 'Nuff said.

Note: they serve lady m's green tea crepe cake that isn't sold in lady m's bakeshop.

Two of my favorite things in life: multiple assortments of meat (that's what she said) and ninjas.  Gyu-Kaku has both, I shall explain.

Gyu-Kaku, pronounced OO-KA-KOO (as per our waitress Yisel), is a meat-lover's dream.  I entered with a friend, and were greeted with the rich aroma of maillard reaction as I could smell the denatured proteins on the surface of the meat recombine with the sugars present.  I was highly impressed by the clan of servers we had.  I honestly do believe that there is a secret ninja school, at the back of the restaurant...I shall explain.  I drink like a fish, that is, I drink WATER like a fish; and may I say that my glass was always full.  They've trained their servers to have secret intense ninja senses; my friend is extremely sensitive to ice, allergic almost; the ninja waiter noticed this, and ensured her glass was always at room temperature....our glasses were always full, green tea was always kept at the right heat, our food portions were the exact 3.5oz that they suggested, our grill was replaced consistently (without a slight raise of the hand)...but most of all, as our waiter(s) spoke to us/took our order, they all managed to squat down effortlessly to ensure that they gave perfect eye contact as they took our order(s).  Once our meal arrived, like little savages---we couldn't wait to devour it---in our defense we were starved for hours.

We packed our grill with our vegetables to steam (potato garlic was great, muschroom medley is a must, and the asparagus was divine).  But the meat, the meat was so damn good (for lack of a better phrase).  We ordered the garlic shrimp (ok).  The short ribs were marbled to perfection, and marinated in a sweet sauce.  As we grilled it, the charring of the meat allowed for the perfect flavor.  We then took a dab at the miso steak (which I believe is their most popular item, as described in the menu as #1 most popular item)---this was again, so damn good.  I mean, no words, no words.  It wasn't dry, just the right thickness of meat (lol), and it just tasted so freaking good.

As we settled down from our food coma, and came back to reality, I was disappointed that we had to leave, so soon.  We placed our cards to pay, and in a "ninja second", Ben (our other waiter, we had 10), like a little covert mercenary---comes out with our cards, with two pens.  I couldn't breath.  Two pens, I love that I didn't have to share my pen.  I digress, I will come again, and this time order more garlic rice.

AMAZING! The platter with all the different steaks was absolutely perfect! I love that we get to grill them right at the table and I love that they make a good lychee martini mmmm! And don't forget the green tea fluff like cake for dessert served with green tea ice cream. The cake was melting away in my mouth! Oh so good...

We came as a large party and I'm not sure as to what we ate (as 1 person ordered for all of us) but it was Meat and a LOT of it. We even had some sushi. Everything was delicious. Steak, Kalbi, Beef, Yum! But beware, this place is pricey! But the decor is nice and it makes it almost worth it.

Holy cow! Gyu-kaku is meat heaven! We came here during their happy hour special- a number of meats at discounted prices and all beers at $3! After taking a look at the menu, we decided on the Geisha Course (usually $70, but $55 during happy hour) and additionally ordered a mushroom medley as well as a spicy pork. For two people, this was way more than enough food...

    The course came with:
    Edamame
    Gyu-Kaku Salad
    Miso Soup
    Sukiyaki Bibimbop
    Premium Kalbi
    Harami Skirt Steak
    Chicken Basil
    N.Y. Strip Steak
    Assorted Vegetables
    S'Mores

All the meats came in 3oz portions and were deliciously marinated. We loved everything we had, but our favorite meat out of our course has to be the Harami Skirt Steak.. it basically melted in our mouths. The Sukiyaki Bibimbop was also a great side item.. plenty of meat and a great kick with every bite. We really enjoyed the mushroom medley too.. the enoki mushrooms had this buttery texture after being grilled for a few minutes- so damn tasty.

The decor is beautiful and the space is roomy.. filled with huge booths that can easily fit parties of 6. On top of this, we experienced impeccable service. Our waiter explained everything to us, including how long to cook each type of food and where to place it on the grill. They changed our grill 3 times and came by to make sure everything was to our liking. I love, love, love the s'mores dessert. It was the perfect way to a meal at a Yakiniku restaurant... and made me feel like I was 10 again.

This place was kind of fun, because you get to grill your food. On the other hand, everything is overpriced, and while it's good it's nothing particularly special. Ambiance felt kind of corporate, like a hipper PF Changs.

There was a happy hour deal on drinks when we were waiting to be seated by the bar, so we got warm sake for $5, which was a great deal. When we sat down, we found out that there's another (?) happy hour that starts at 9:30 (the server even delayed my beer by 2 minutes so I'd qualify). That happy hour also applied to certain dishes. Not sure how that works exactly...

Service was friendly and helpful, although it seemed like they didn't explain how the whole thing worked, when it's actually kind of confusing and menu doesn't say much. All the dishes are small, and generally you want at least two a person, along with probably a vegetable dish and a rice or noodles to split. There was no dish that was amazing, delicious, or impressive, although it was pretty good all around.

It came out to about $35 per person, and we left hungry. At that price we should've just walked the extra couple blocks to Momofuku. Not a bad place, but there are much better in the area, especially for the price.

Called ahead to reserve a table for five people on a Weds night.
Walked in five minutes before being "seated"
Hostess comes back and lets us know there was a mistake and we would have to add a chair to the booth. Highly inconvenient because a chair sticking out of the main pathway for servers is annoying.
Service was slow and the server could not even get our order right. One vegetarian person and he couldn't even recommend which veggie options.
Ahi Tuna Poke - very fishy and not fresh tasting
Sashimi salmon with hot oil - mediocre
Premium kalbi and short rib - not how it used to be.
Bulgogi bimibap stone pot with rice... didn't even come in a stone pot!! Came in a white bowl. UGH

Never again. I used to come here all the time, and loved their specials. Now its just horrible and went FAR down hill.

I went here right after christmas with two of my key employees and my business partner and his wife. We wanted to show our appreciation for our crew but did not have the budget for a big blow out party.

I called about an hour before we went and made a reservation. As soon as we got there, we were seated. We were missing one person and I could tell that the place did not like to seat incomplete parties but they said nothing and proceeded.

The waitress came over promptly and explained everything. We decided to order off the happy hour menu and got a deal that brought more then enough food and 1/2 price pitchers of beer.

The best part was that the wait staff staggered thew food perfectly so that the table was never overcrowded and yet the grill was always full. The sauces were amazing and the quality of the food was better then expected.

I will definitely be going here again.

Gyu-Kaku.. I came across this restaurant after my friends uploaded pictures on facebook from the place. It looked fresh, satisfying, and even a little bit romantic.

So with my date, we hunted this place down during the happy hours. GREAT DEALS. Probably not going to get as good as this in the city if you ask me, for awesome food and drinks.

Even though we struggled to find the place, we managed after 20 minutes of looking around. IT IS DIRECTLY ON THE OTHER SIDE OF COOPER UNION WITH A FLAG THAT SAYS GYU KAKU. that being said, lets get on with the food.

This place was not as romantic as I thought it would be (lol) but regardless, the food and the interior was great. We were seated and handed the happy hour menu. I ordered the bibimbap and the garlic noodle. Then ordered bunch of beat such as the tongue, ribeye, ny strip, wagyu, hanger, and etc. All the meats were excellent. Very juicy and well marinaded. I don't know if i could've asked for different marinade for some meat but whatever, i guess next time. I do not recommend the garlic noodles, though. It was a bit...dry and flavorless. We had to add in the hot sauce on the table to bring out the flavor a bit.

All in all. bang for the buck. check came out to be about 50 bucks or so including tax and tip. Definitely will be back.

I always leave this place incredibly full since we like to go during Happy Hour, which runs from 3-6pm. A lot of the meats as well as some appetizers are 50% off. Usually one order of beef costs around $10, so 50% off is a really good deal.

I like the fact that I can cook my own meats - it's more fun that way. I especially like this place because I don't come out smelling like I just spent 5 hours in eating Korean BBQ.

The best part is dessert! They have this amazing green tea mille crepe cake, which is about 20 layers of thin crepe stacked on top of green tea creme. Paired with two scoops of vanilla ice cream, this was perfect.

This place is great for groups and the service is quick and attentive. I will definitely be back.

This is probably one of my top 3 favorite restaurants in NYC. Interactive eating at its best. Open flame grills and marinated meats: what more could you want? Best items are the harami miso skirt steak, the kalbi short ribs, and the original chicken bibimbap. You can use the set menu as a guide as to how much food to get, and then just order what you want. Expect to be there at least 2 hours. Also, I recommend this location over the midtown location. Just is a more chill, sexier atmosphere.

My friends took me here for my birthday - there were about 10 of us.  It was my idea because it seemed like a different, more interactive experience for a large group.  It was definitely a fun vibe and a nice atmosphere.

Because there were 10 of us and only 2 grills, cooking was a bit complicated.  We couldn't all use the grill at the same time and we were only able to cook one item at a time.  As a result, I finished my mushrooms before I even started cooking my steak!  And the waiter didn't even bring over the shrimp course until later in the meal.  I would have preferred to eat everything at the same time.  Also, while I am not the best cook in the world (or the 2nd, 3rd or 100th best...), I think the instructions for how long each item should have been cooked were a bit off. Had I taken my steak off the grill according to the waiter's instructions, it would have been raw.  And I think I definitely undercooked my shrimp because I didn't feel that well later in the night.

Since my friends wouldn't let me pay, I have no idea how expensive it was.

In sum, it was definitely a fun experience and I would like to do it again someday but it was just too unorganized for me.

Whenever my friends and I hang out, we like to come to Gyukaku... with of course a full wallet!

We like to choose the very best - so the kalbis and the kobes we've all tried before and they taste wonderful! Again- I'm a HUGE fan of steak and beef so if this place satisfies me, then it must be good! As my friends and I like to order and order and order until we are actually full (it takes awhile :)), sometimes it can get quite pricey - 50 upwards per person for a casual 'Japanese' style Korean bbq. Not my idea of casual! Especially when you cook everything yourself.

One thing I must recommend again and again is the negi-tan - the beef tongue. I was grossed out by the thought of it at first (what American wouldn't?) but after trying it out, it was probably the most delicious thing on the menu!! It tastes kinda like beef, only a little chewier and a bit different in texture (it's rougher but interesting!)

So although it's expensive, I think it's quite worth it. Just can't casually dine with friends like this every other day. Meh.

I love this place, the only thing is their dishes and BBQs are small(except the rice dishes). You'll end up ordering a lot and paying a lot. But I found out they have specials, I think is M-Th after 9:30 most BBQ, some delicious appetizer and drinks are 50% off. But don't go there at 9:30, it'll be too crowed you might not get a seat. You can go there an hour early and order a salad and appetizer( not on the discounted menu) then place the rest of your 50% off order like 9:15 ( let them know and ask them to bring it at 9:30).

Great yakiniku place.  As others have mentioned the skirt steak is spectacular and the smores are just genius.  It's a little pricey compared to Yakiniku West, but ambience wise it's a lot nicer.  Fun date place.. a full a la carte meal for two (1 app, 4 meat cuts, side of rice, order of veggies, and a bottle of wine) ran me $100, not including tip.

Wow. If you want some fantastic grilled meat, exactly to your taste, here's your place. Why? Because you grill it yourself. Some may not want to put in the effort, but it's a fun, social, different eating experience, perfect for a double date or group dinner. The portions are small but the cuts of meat are fantastic. I had the Harami Miso Skirt Steak - wow, wow, wow. SO succulent and flavorful, and the miso marinade is out of this world. Others at my table ordered the Duck and Kobe Kalbe short rib, among others, both delicious. We also order veggie sides and Sukiyaki Bimbimbop to compliment the meat. Don't be scared about not cooking your meat or sides correctly, the wait staff is very helpful and will give you recommended cooking times. They also have a full bar here and make a mean martini!

    ONE WORD: NEGI-TAN!!!! SO YUMMYY!!

I've tried the Gyu-Kaku in Beverly Hills as well and this one in East Village definitely tops it. It seems to be more of a high-class, sophisticated restaurant than it's counterpart in Cali, which offers All-You-Can-Eat sets for cheap prices. I would not recommend the rice or noodle dishes, but the meats (the negi-tan!!, the kobe beef, harami miso skirt steak) and the spinach ...amazing.

Happy hour makes price so much more affordable. Went in around 3:30pm (made a reservation an hour ago on opentable). When we went in, it was packed!

Friends loved the spicy pork - she got two dishes! The rib eye was good too. Definitely try the Harami Miso Skirt Steak! There's also liver and beef tongue if you aren't afraid to try new things. Overall, wonderful place with lots of meat (DIY- style)!

Took my bf here to celebrate his 30th bday and we loved it. I made the reservations through OpenTable and when we arrived we were seated immediately.

We decided on the Samurai ($90; enough for 2 ppl) and added an order of cheesy broccoli, lamb chops, and chicken noodles, we both ordered the vodka strawberry lemonade.  After ordering the food started coming out almost immediately.

Loved the hot oil seared salmon. Mmmm.  As each cut of meat came out the waiter told us how long to cook each.  The experience was great and the food was amazing!! Everything was seasoned/marinated to perfection!! We ate everything and loved every bite!!

We will definitely be making a return visit!!

A decent Yakiniku restaurant that has everything the hungry meatatarian would want. With that said, having been to a Gyu-Kaku in Taipei, Taiwan, there are several differences that keep this location from being above three stars:

    1) The ordering style: The Gyu-Kaku in Taiwan (along with all other Yakiniku restaurants I've been to overseas) are all-you-can eat within a certain time limit (usually around 2 hours). That unfortunately does not hold true here as you must order per item from the menu. There are however some meal combos that help simplify the process.

    2) The size of the table: The size of the table at this location is considerably smaller than the one in Taiwan. While it certainly makes for a cozy atmosphere, it turns out to be a bit too cozy as certain party members are forced to sit virtually on top of the grill.

    3) The size of the grill: Considering how much food is to be cooked, it's a bit too small for my taste. As such, the process of cooking and eating is limited by the amount by the amount of meat you can cram onto the grill. As someone who likes to maximize the amount of food I can stuff by eating quickly, this becomes a bit of a hindrance.

Despite the drawbacks listed above, this restaurant still gives a good bang for the buck and is certainly worth the trip for any meat lover. Just make sure you bring a hearty appetite.

Good stuff. Went here during the freakish storm of Halloween weekend. This was the perfect option because we wanted to feel warm and cozy while it snowed outside in October, and walk out feeling full. To say that we left feeling full is an understatement. As a party of 4, we went for the Shogun BBQ course. Holy sh!tballs this was a lot of food. Well, let me explain. With the Shogun dinner, you get...NINE different kinds of fish/meat, but to be fair, you get two to three bite-size pieces per person. But I mean come ON, that adds up. I was borderline uncomfortably full (in that happy/fulfilled/tired way that makes you want to run home to your sweatpants).

    Here's what we got:
To start, a small plate of Ahi Poke (tuna tartare infused with soy and sesame), Miso Soup and a Shogun Salad. So far so good, although already starting to feel a bit full.

Then on to the endless rounds of meat that came out of the kitchen raw and in pairs. Each item and was served with cook-time instructions for the personal grill placed inside the table in front of you (our table had two).
    1. Chateaubriand
    2. N.Y. Strip Steak
    3. Prime Rib Eye
    4. Chicken Basil
    5. Salmon
    6. Shrimp Garlic
    7. Ahi Tuna Shi
    8. U.S. Kobe Kalbi Short Rib
    9. U.S. Kobe Harami Skirt Steak

As you can see, the Kobe beef came out last; but sadly our stomachs had already met capacity. Those were probably the highlight of the BBQ, but in all honestly it was all really tasty.

In addition to the endless amounts of meat, we were served veggies to throw on the grill- nothing fancy, but went perfectly with the BBQ: corn on the cob, onions and tomatoes.

AND there was the Sukiyaki Bibimbap which came out somewhere in the middle of the never ending meat course. I LOVE Bibimbap; takes fried rice to a whole new level. For those of you who don't know, Bibimbap is a fried rice dish served in a hot cast-iron bowl, and is mixed when served. And the fried egg you find in your standard fried rice, comes out (usually) completely raw with Bibimbap, and is mixed into the dish and cooked by the steaming hot cast-iron serving dish. The rice is then left to sit and cook along the edges of the bowl, making the rice crispy, but not burnt. I love it.

Oh wait, what was that? Oh dessert you say? Yup. There was dessert. Pancakes that you can throw on the grill with ice cream and s'mores!
Let's just say I rolled home happy.

I love do-it-yourself restaurants. It makes the meal last longer!

Usually go for the hot oil seared salmon and tuna volcano for apps. Come here after 9:30 and drinks (even wine) are half price at the bar.

My favorite is the gyu-tan, basically the negi-tan without scallion. I think we've tried every variety of beef, it's pretty flavorful - doesn't need spicy sauce unless you need a kick. The jigaes are okay, almost as good as those in korean restaurants.

The lamb chops and duck are good as well. I tried to stomach the tripe and horumon one time ... oh boy! My friend had about 4 pieces and I, being the eco-friendly person that I am, didn't want to waste food so I ate it all. I don't think I even chewed most of it. Didn't sit well at all ... the rest I'm going to leave to your imagination HAHA.

But other that that, I'll be revisiting.

Fun yakiniku restaurant in the East Village/NoHo area. The four of us ordered the Shogun for 4 at $180. I thought the price was a little bit steep considering the quality of the meal. A few of the beef cuts were great, but just as many were too fatty, tasteless, etc. Aside from the spotty food, the overall atmosphere is fun. I would consider returning with out of town friends for the novelty of the 'cook it yourself' experience.

Would have been 3.5 but they lost 2.5 stars and i'll explain why in a little bit.  I used to like this place a lot.  Used to come here quite frequently with my buddies for the happy hour.  Regular priced BBQ was a tad expensive, but for half off and beer....amazing.  Great selection of meats with different marinades and dipping sauces.  Premium kalbi, filet, bone-in kalbi and rib eye were my favorites.  Great atmosphere and layout.  Could get pretty loud in there, but never too loud I felt like I had to scream to converse with my party.
Now, why do you say it lost 2 stars.  EXTREMELY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE.  Not only are they slow at serving, which I can overlook since it gets pretty crowded and hectic with all the orders and BBQing, but they take little to no responsibility.  One of their servers spilled ponzu sauce on one of my friends, her phone and bag.  We got a half hearted, barely audible apology and the server was replaced with another server right after.  When we explained to the new server what happened, she said she did not know what happened and only gave us a few napkins.  When asked to speak to the manager, he asked us to point out the old server, which we could not find anywhere for 15 minutes, as if she just disappeared or was taken off the floor.  Needless to say, she never reappeared and we were not compensated in anyway.  None of us has been back since.  A great night, turned bad because the place was too cheap and smug to offer a solid and heart felt apology with perhaps at least a dry cleaning bill or free dish.

I am glad that I found this place when I was visiting in NYC. There is no Japanese BBQ in DC. So I was so excited to check out this place.
We went here on Saturday night without reservation. We expected to wait for a while but we just waited for 15 minutes to get a table.

We tried 4 course menu. The food was very decent. I love the dipping sauce. YUM YUM

I don't usually write reviews for places I find here but I've been to Gyu-Kaku several times at the behest of a friend and each time, the food and service has been excellent. It is my go-to place in the East Village if I want to ensure a consistently good experience.

Excellent food and the happy hour specials are extremely worth it.  Pitchers of ice cold beer in freezer-chilled glasses?  Delicious food?  Rib eye (either the $14 or $8) is delicious, duck is juicy, the mushroom medley wonderful.  The waiters are very helpful and will tell you how long to cook meats or dishes if you ask, or even if you don't ask.  Pork belly is delicious with fresh lemon, and the toro beef is thin but so juicy and tasty.  Love this place.

Kobe steak and hanger steak are the best. Bim-bim-bap is good. Appetizer is small but good (I guess we ordered tuna tar tar and seaweed salad). A lot of choices on the menu.

We went there Saturday afternoon, surprisingly it's happy hour. So we enjoyed both 'Happy Hour Menu' and 'Lunch Menu'. It's really cheap I have to say... $30ish/ppl including wine/sake for a 9ppl group!

    Fulfilled :)

btw - Green tea crepe cake is also good. Comparing with V-Cafe, it's even richer.

This place has a TGI Fridays kind of feel to it. Cheap plastic menus, no character. It is a huge place. They can afford to make it huge since all the patrons cook for themselves. So it's not New Yorky, but more Long Islandy.

But besides all these traits (which aren't necessarily bad), it's delicious. Really. You get tender pieces of choice cuts of meat with sweet tangy sauces. And you get to cook them yourself.

You can also order smores for dessert. And make them on the grill as if it were an open fire. Yay for using our imaginations.

You will spend a lot of money here.

I've been to a few Gyu Kakus and this is my 2nd visit here.

Usually they're like ninjas and are really on point when it comes to service.  Unfortunately, when we came for their Sat happy hour, they took forever to bring us out our pitcher of beer, and also meats, which I didn't understand.

It was still early in the evening, so perhaps they were still setting up, but I expect higher from them.  At the time we visited, it seemed like they had more employees there than diners.

At the location in Midtown East, they've always been pretty consistent and you get stuff pretty quickly.

Oh well, the slow service allowed us to control our appetites and not gorge ourselves completely on the meats and pitchers of beer.

    MEAT EVERYWHERE!

$3 beers?  $10 pitchers?  50% off meat?  50% off alcohol?  Don't quite know what to make of this except that you will leave full and satisfied and quite possibly, pleased at the bill.

You will need to order more food than you think you will eat.  It was 2 of us  (guy+girl) and we got 5 orders of the 'Miso Hanger Steak' + vegetables and that was about the perfect amount.  I tried most of the marinade flavors they offered but consistently go back to the Miso.  Excellent quality meat with great flavors.

I'm from the south and this is about as close as you can get to grilling some yummy cow in the city.

    Nice place!

We have seven people, didn't make a reservation, but only waited about 10 minutes before grabbing a nice long table at around 5:15pm. Happy hour is from 3 to 6 in the afternoon. Your orders have to be before then, but the waitress will give you a reminder before six.

They have quite a lot of beef, my favorites are harumi and kalbi, if I remembered them correctly. Seaweed salad is nice too, but quite pricy at $4, taking into account the small amount. Sets are only for lunch. I do recommend the courses though, quite suitable for 2 or 4 ppl. The service is good, as they changed the grill quite often.

Like this place, esp for group meals, including tip we paid $43/ppl for a 7ppl group. Will come back.

I fell in love with my waitress. I'm just gonna put that out there. Although I don't remember if her name was Hasumi or Hayumi..meh. it's all good.

So!! I went during lunch time, where there were special for lunch. I think it's like 12 dollars for a BBQ experience? rice, soup, salad, bbq. Nice amount, not filling, but satisfying. You can order more if you want to.
The portions are not super huge, but not tiny either. It's a nice amount.

Besides our one good attentive waitress, the rest of the statff were so-so. I disliked the fact that they've used MY meat grabber to change the grill instead of their own. The next time they do that I'll throw a fit, but I've only been there once.

NICE BATHROOM! Nice decor, mouth wash to use, toothpicks, etc. Just the best bathroom I've ever been to.
The overall design of the whole place is wonderful too.

    I'll definitely be coming back.

Meat marination was good, accompanying the sauces they had on the table. The Kobe beef wasn't up to it's standard, i didn't even know it was Kobe beef or nah.. Let's just say the Rib eye tasted better. Service was definitely not attentive and we had to wave down the waiter/waitress a couple of times to get their attention. Came here for Sunday lunch and had the lunch special. The order was messed up and the waitress was forgetting to bring our food or miss part of it, charged us the wrong items.. Anyways with all these flaws, let's just say i can still give a three star because i believe this restaurant deserve a other chances and the food  was delicious ! Hopefully next time i come here it'll be better and the star will go up!

This restaurant has a great ambiance!  The dim lighting and the booths provide just the right amount of intimacy.

The BBQ portions are small in relation to the price, but it was filling enough for me.  This is a good restaurant when you are looking to spurge a little.
