We were walking in the neighborhood and came upon a woman with giant orange barrels and rubber gloves.  Kind of a weird setup, but these were some of the best pickles I've ever had.  She had a variety of pickles from sour to hot to fresh.  I'd never had "fresh" pickles before.  They are now my new favorite.  They're like the best flavors of the cucumber, but more intense.  The full sour was also quite delicious.  I didn't try the hot, but some in our group found it to be a little too hot.

They sell them individually and in half and full pint containers.  If we had had room in our luggage for pickles, we totally would have packed a pint.

OMG!
Guss Pickles just announced that they are closing the LES store within 6 months.
I have been going there for over 25 years. I grew up on Guss!

I am going to miss them. Oh, they do have a Brooklyn store.

What can I say, Guss' Pickles are amazing. Sour, fresh, and the spicy? They're absolutely incredible.

and if you don't like cucumbers (are you human? really? get out of here...) they have tomatoes, peppers, - fabulous.

really, places like this are the reason I love this city. great pickles, I'll be back, don't worry Guss. and this time I'm coming for a bigger container....

Wednesday July 15th. Middle of the week, no holidays, secular or otherwise, for weeks in either direction. Sunny, not a cloud in the sky, a welcome respite from recent weather.  Not too hot, with a mild breeze to refresh you. Tourist groups going up and down orchard street, their wallets bursting with money to spend on historical crap, and failing that, kids dancing in the subways to old MJ songs. The stage is perfectly set...so WTF?! Why was Guss' closed, yet again?!
Had $20 to burn on pickled gifts for others. Thanks Guss', you fail now.

It's sad that this wonderful pickle place won't be here for long!!  Try one (or all) before they move - it's definitely worth the trek downtown.  Or, if you'd like to eat these vinegared treats with a tad more refinement, grab a table at Spitzer's Corner and order their pickle appetizer - which are Guss' pickles!  Hurry though, they don't last long at the restaurant, especially on a busy night!

Memories, lah dee dah dee dah, memmm-ries, la dee dah dee dah, memmm-ries.....

Ok, I have a crappy singing voice that doesn't do justice to Guss' Pickles.

As a child I remember visiting and getting one of those huge full sours wrapped by a napkin and eating it for about an hour as a snack.

Nowadays kids eat sugary snacks to increase the chance of diabetes.  Back then we went for salt to increase the chance of heart attacks!  How times have changed.

Somehow another pickle has never completely satisfied.  Once you've gone Guss' you can never go back.

Haven't been to Guss' in years, but seeing it on Yelp sure brings back memories!  (I'll spare you the chorus.)

...And the picklessssssssssssss!!!

That was back when Dane Cook was good.

Oh man oh man, when we walked up to Guss' and saw all these fine pickles I knew we needed to have some. Ordered up a quart of their ultra sour pickles and some of their homemade Dijon mustard. Plus 2 pickles for the road. All for $10.00.

Sat on a bench next door, dunked one of the pickles in the Dijon mustard and proceeded to crunch my way to happiness. Best pickles. Best Dijon mustard ever. Grey Poupon what?!

You win this time New York...

Awesome product. I am sad they are going out of business because what is better than something pickled the proper way...not just shoved into a jar full of vinegar, preservatives and yellow #5...

After being stood up, we came here for a pickle.

Oh, but this was no ordinary pickle. This half sour was incredible! I wish I'd bought an extra one (or five). They were just that crisp and delectable! And at two for a buck, these babies are in reach even if you're on a tight budget.

You really haven't had a pickle until you've come to Guss.

By far, the best pickles that I've ever had.  Period!

They had fresh-, half sours, 3/4 sours, and sour pickles. I saw pickled beets and other vegetables.  Reasonable prices.  Special care packaging if you tell them you'll be traveling.

I have read that they're not open on Saturdays.  They were open on Sunday, 8/10/08 when I visited in the afternoon.

I give my highest recommendation.

I came here from the west coast and I have to say I've been to all the pizza and hot dog joints and I'm being honest here, not the best I ever ate.
But, NYC knows how to make a pickle.

This would be 5 stars, but I'm pretty sure they depend on Punxsutawney Phil as to whether they will open that day or not. I've brought friends during what should be an average normal day... more than once... to ultimately be greeted by a shuttered pickle joint.

It would be nice if they had a website with a giant thumbs up if they are open or thumbs down if they are closed. Do you know how many times I've had a great sandwich in hand and I'm ready to watch the big game and all I need are Guss' pickles... only to have no pickles.

Little known fact... more children have been disappointed by a closed Guss' than on Christmas morning.

A few years ago, when I heard that Guss' was leaving their original location behind, I was devastated. Luckily, their new location is a little less off the beaten path, closer to my dad's office, and just as.....briney?

Guss' Pickles are another one of those NY treats that I was lucky enough to grow up with (some husbands surprise their wives with flowers--my dad, however, favored pickles!), and I'm so glad that they're still alive and kicking pickle ass. The sidewalks of the LES wouldn't be the same without their giant barrels of sour, salty, but always crisp goodness.

Extra points (not that they need them) for the guy who packed up my quart to go--he gave me a freebie on the spot and plunged the container back into the vat of brine with such reckless abandon that surely there must be pickle juice running through his veins--now that's dedication to your trade!

This is definitely the place to get the best pickle. Don't be faked by those guys on Essex, the pickle guys. They don't even compare!!! The 3/4 sours and half sours are amazing and I love the vegetable mix thingy too. I don't really go out of my way for pickles, but my dad is addicted and it brings him back to the good ol' days so I pick them up from time to time. However, if you love pickles, you should seriously come here. The people that serve the pickles are very friendly too.

Dear God,

I just wanted to thank you for giving my the brilliant idea to walk over the Williamsburg bridge and stop at Guss' Pickles before walking uptown to get my hair cut.  God, you know how much I love pickles.  Remember all the years I spent at my mother's eating Bet-Shalom half sours? Remember how as a child I would ask for an extra pickle with my sandwich at the deli?  I don't mind that I woke up in the middle of the night salivating and thinking about a half-sour from Guss'.  Really, it's fine.

Love,Rebecca
ps: Why didn't you create a Guss' delivery option so I could order some pickles for dinner tonight?

I'm a sucker for a good pickle [insert bawdy joke here], and these are some damn fine ones.  And believe me, I know pickles! [Insert second bawdy joke here].  Sold in a charming old world style on the street in the barrels, they come in all shapes, sizes, flavors and they're all delish.  Pick your favorite - mine's the half sours - and take a tub home.  Or two for a dollar?  Don't mind if I do!  [Too easy, guys, come on!].

Five stars because... well... if you like pickles the place is perfect for you. I didn't think you could have a place that solely specializes in pickles, but low and behold, Guss proved me wrong. Guess its just another reason of why I love the city

If you like fresh, crisp pickles out of the barrel, this is the place.  I loved the new pickle, but wouldn't complain if there was a dill or half sour next to my pastrami sandwich.  Kudos to the garlic stuffed olives from my daughter.  They are more than happy to give you a sample, so make sure you try that one you are thinking about but are not sure!!

i am a pickle nut (i actually prefer the new pickles over the half sour) and guss has perfected the pickle.  BUT.  even better are the sour tomatoes.  yes, sour tomatoes.  they're little and white and so tangy your face is guaranteed to scrunch up as you eat them.  but they are SO GOOD.  so good.  mmmm.

I love Guss Pickles!!   These pickles are the best.....They are sold in these big giant red barrels right off the street on the lower east side in N.Y.   There are a a variety of pickles to choose  and sample from. You can pick from spicy to dill or half sour flavors.  My favorite was the green tomato!  It was sour and juicy and amazing!  I wished I lived in N.Y. because I would be there weekly..but I  did find out  that they do ship any  where in the U.S.  YAHOO!!

Brilliant, old-school New York for foodies. Fresh pickles, pickled peppers, and other pickled items for sale from barrels on the sidewalk. You can get a single half-sour pickle for 50 cents -- wonderful street food -- or you can get larger containers for about $6. Fresh, fun food. And a bit of history worth maintaining!

Guss' Pickles is often touted as the lone survivor of the pickle district a few blocks away on Essex.  It changed locations, but it's still bringing expertise to pickle making, as far as I can tell.  This is less of a shop than a storefront with five pickle barrels sitting out front.  You have your standard pickle options - full sour, three quarters sour, half sour, and new pickles.  The full sour is everything you need in a pickle, as far as I'm concerned.  If you know your pickles (or even if you don't), it's worth wandering over to the Pickle Guys on Essex and trying to do a taste comparison.  I can taste a difference, but can't pick a favorite/decide which is best -- but eating a pickle wandering down the street in the LES is pretty fun!  Next time I go I'll ask for a bag or at least a twist-tie for the pickle bag...I may love pickles, but I can't eat three at a time.

I love pickles.  If I eat a burger, i like my pickles to be almost as big as teh burger.  This place was great (no burgers - that was just a side not - they just sell pickles).  Not sure what kind you like between sour, spicy, and new?  They will hook you up with a selection of all of their pickles.  Bringing them to a dinner party?  They will select the proper snack sized pickles for multiple people and bite sized proportions.  Also - go for the spicy pickles - they are the best!

Ok I love pickles..I love that they are sour, salty, and oh so garlicky...that's why Guss' is great! They have these huge barrels out on the sidewalk where you can get 2 pickles for a $1...lots of different flavors but I usually prefer my old standby of a half sour pickle.  One more thing to note..The guy that sells the pickles, he's really nice but I think he must have sold too many pickles in his life because he's a little eccentric (think cat lady eccentric but with pickles).
