Even with the cold weather I can't help but come here to get my 2 scoops and just lay low. I got the little bonbon too just because I was in the zone !! Normally I just go with a mint chip with something chocolaty !!

To make things even better they're in the Entertainment coupon book which gives you a deal of Buy One Get One Free .. YEEEEEE !!

    A must if you're in town ; )

After 2 years of loyalty to Vic's, the boyfriend convinced me to try out Gunther's. While both shops offer the same quaint, vintage 1950's-esque style and decor, I have to say that the menu at Gunther's in a bit more in the lead at this point. Aside from the delicious variety of ice cream (try the chocolate-dip!), floats, sundaes and shakes, they also have a great --- actually, AMAZING lunch menu that you can't help but try! Since I'm a huge chili fan (not that I'm 'huge', I just LOVE me some chili), we got a bowl to put it to the test.

Dear Lord --- thank you for this abundant mix of meat, beans, and just the right amount of spice to give it a mild kick. I had to fight off my 5 year old from stealing too much of her share (yes...Mom of the Year over here) so I could get my fill.

My ice cream sundae was just as delicious, with a huge helping of whipped cream, hot fudge, nuts, and a pretty little cherry to top it off.

Prices were....eek. Is $20 expensive for a sundae, small bowl of chili, sandwich, and ice cream cone pricey between two people? Who knows. What I can say is that I left feeling full, but not uncomfortable, and equally happy with my freshly-satisfied sweet tooth. It was a great spot to stop in for lunch with the family, plus with the great location ideal for people-watching, I'd definitely suggest coming back again. Maybe even purchase some SWAG from the retail area they have. Who doesn't want an authentic 1930's tin ice-cream can? I'm sure we can find something to do with it at home. I think.

So I've tried leatherby's and the other big franchise ice cream shops. And I would have to say this place ranks up there as my favorite so far in this area.

I had a coffee shake, while my gf had the banana split. Both were good and a good serving size.

The ambience give you a classic ice cream shop feel. Friendly staff. And good ice cream.

Best Ice Cream in Sacramento, Best Ice Cream in California.  Best Ice Cream in The US of A... seriously, no exaggeration, Gunther's is the Best Ice Cream Ever!!!  To all the locals reading this, yes, I love Vic's too, but Gunther's is the champ, and that's just the way it is.  On all measurable variables: flavor, texture, variety, and awesomeness (I added that in there myself), Gunther's gets a perfect score.

Anything you can think of having to do with ice cream: 30+ flavors, shakes, banana splits, sundaes, brownie sundaes, bon bons, waffle cones, fruit freezes, and more, Gunther's been doing all this for years, and have long ago perfected their trade.  My favorites are the banana ice cream, and the strawberry (boring I know, but I'm a classics kind of guy), and when I really want to splurge I'll opt for a brownie sundae topped with whipped cream and cherries on top... YUM!!!  My gf loves the fruit freezes, and usually goes with orange that has a middle layer of vanilla ice cream.

So if its your first time, just wait in line (yes, there is ALWAYS a line -morning/night, summer/winter, it doesn't matter), and prepare to be impressed.

Why, why, oh WHY has it taken me sooooo long to go to Gunther's?  I've lived in Sac since 1990, for goodness sake?  What's my excuse?  None really...thank goodness I had a CBS Local Deal coupon that was expiring December 31, 2011, which compelled me into "use it or lose it" mode.  So, I dragged the hubby out on a sunny New Year's Eve afternoon to muster together $20 worth of fare at Gunther's.

Our sandwiches (me: roast beef, Hubby: turkey) were fine.  Remember, we had to hit $20 worth of menu items, so ordering JUST ice cream would have been near-impossible.  They were nice enough to tell me to let them know when I was done with my sandwich and THEN they'd make my sundae...YAY!  Hubby's butter pecan shake was delish, as well as plentiful.  My little sundae (made with fudge brownie ice cream and hot fudge) was phenomenal!

This place is great, and the kids working the line that day were nice, efficient, and chirpy as all get out...made the experience all the better, IMHO.

The biggest compliment I can give?  I will gladly return to Gunther's EVEN WITHOUT A COUPON!  Trust me, that's saying something ;)  However, I do believe they're in the 2012 Entertainment Book...woot!!  But I'll STILL come back after that.  A Sacramento institution worthy of the title and accolades!!

This place is an old antique place, however, because its been open this long, it means that this place has business! I love coming here because it has a homey feel. The staff is very fast an efficient. I always come here because you can get green tea ice cream. Not many places sell this type of ice cream unless you go to a Japanese restaurant and order it. The scoops are huge too. I got a half gallon for 7.50. so worth it!!

On our way home I discovered by boyfriend had a GroupOn for this place expiring that day! How in the world did we manage to go so long without making a trip to Gunther's?!?(Probably for me you don't know what your missing out on until you try.) Anyways I've hear rave reviews about this place and believe me they are all true. We had $20 to spend before a heavy dinner so we had some sandwiches, soup and took a quart of marble ice cream home.

For $7.99 I had the daily special- a roast beef sandwich, chicken tortilla soup, chips and a drink while my boyfriend had just a turkey sandwich. Both sandwiches were very simple and tasted fresh. You have your choice of bread and option to add other items. The chicken tortilla soup was very tasty. It had a strong flavor and was a good size. We got a pretty good deal and hit the spot.

I haven't tried the ice cream yet but if I can get to it before my boyfriend I'm pretty sure I'm going to like it. I'll be sure to write a follow up review when I do.

My mother and I used our Friday off last week to get some Gunther's!  We had lunch first.  We both enjoyed our pastrami sandwich on a sour dough roll with chips and a drink.  While very tasty, it was a simple sandwich.  No bells and whistles.  But it was good.  No complaints.  Sometimes fancy is too much... and fancy on a pastrami might be too much.

After our lunch, we had ice cream.  My mom's favorite is black walnut (I hope they never discontinue the flavor... she loves it that much!).  I sampled the pumpkin and the candy cane.  It was a toss up.  Both were very tasty!  But, the candy cane stays on the menu year round, so I went with pumpkin, which literally tastes like a creamy pumpkin pie!  It was so good... but so rich.  And the portion was HUGE (and for not much money).  I couldn't finish it.  The restaurant is clean.  The employees are friendly and helpful.  The sweets options are endless.  Gunther's is ROCK SOLID.

Now, for my only complaint: they don't have a restroom.  LAME!  I thought it was the law that you had to have a public restroom if you served food.  But they directed us to the brewery across the street.  That is my only complaint.

I really don't like eating ice cream but yesterday I just had a craving. I have never been here before but have heard some pretty good reviews about this place.

I was not expecting it to be so tiny though. I came during a rush so the line was already out the door. The staff were super friendly and nice even though it was so busy. I would have expected them to be a little irritated with us but they weren't.

We were noobs so we had no clue what we should order. I ended up ordering the Traditional Banana Split and there was so much everything that I satisfied my cravings and then some. I will definitely be back to try a sundae.

Does really anyone need an additional review to realize how awesome Gunther's is?

Yes, there will be a line, and yes, it will be worth it.

I've been here twice now, both times on odd weeknights, and each time it has been busy, and for good reason! Each time I've been, I've enjoyed traditional hot fudge sundaes, but there are quite a few options to choose from including clown cones, 30+ flavors of ice cream to choose from, brownie sundaes, waffle cones, bon-bons, milkshakes, and more!

This old fashioned ice cream parlor offers a three scoop sundae with whipped cream and two cherries cost $5.95 which is wayyyyy better than anything you'd find Baskin Robin's!

Gunther's also makes their own creamy, delicious ice creams and hand-scoops each delightful scoop into rounded perfection. You can truly taste the quality ingredients and the craftsmanship that goes into their ice cream.

Come, visit, eat, enjoy... you'll be happy you did.

Let's get to the important stuff: you can make any ice cream into a shake (awesome!) and they do old-fashioned chocolate dips (double-awesome!).

This place is a Sacramento institution, it has retro charm, blah blah blah, but the main reason everyone loves it is that their ice cream is creamy heaven, really the best ice cream I've had besides the hand-churned vanilla by dad used to muscle out for 4th of July when I was a kid (but you can't really beat childhood blood-sweat-and-tears vanilla).  My favorite flavor here has to be the classic chocolate chip cookie dough, although their swiss orange chip and praline are strong contenders.  I like to get the dipped cones and my husband gets the shakes, and we'll share.

They also have other treats here like dipped cheesecake, bananas and mud pie; ice cream cakes; bon bons; chocolate-covered cherries; and my personal favorite, a Gunther's spin on the It's-It cookie ice cream sandwich.  It's-Its are my favorite dessert of all time (very difficult to find in Midtown by the way), and I hate to say that the Gunther's is not QUITE as delicious (oddly, I think the cookies aren't stale enough), but they're still pretty darn delicious.

In the summer, Gunther's is open late and we go there to cool off and grab sweets in the late PM. It gets busy, but it's actually a fun little neighborhood hangout.  Gunther's is in the Entertainment Book, so use those coupons!

Insider tip: Don't be intimidated if the line is out the door (which happens on weekends sometimes).  The friendly Gunther's staff is very efficient and sends someone down the line to take orders to expedite the cash register process and thus, your wait time.

I am not much of a sweets person, but oh man, this place totally changed my taste buds.  This is where  I discovered the mint cookie ice cream - a mixture of my two favorite ice cream flavors (mint and cookies n cream).  I was in heaven!  The guys behind the counter were extremely patient while my friends and I took forever to make our decisions.  They were even nice enough to take a picture of us with our yummy desserts.

After going here, I went hunting for mint cookie ice cream and have just stocked my freezer with my new nightly dessert.  YUM!

This place makes me giddy with excitement.  I walk through the door and feel just like a kid again - flashback to lil BadJuju in pigtails and terry tube top romper clutching my Ballerina Barbie in one hand and Cobra Commander in the other - and I break out in the giggles.  The anticipation of the forthcoming sugar rush, taking the first bite of that sweet, creamy, rich, cold ice cream on a hot summer's day, savoring the flavor as it slides down my tongue, throat, and dissolves in my stomach...WOW!!!

We didn't have a place like this in the little town I grew up in.  Our ice cream choices were either Baskin Robbins or Thrifty.  So naturally I feel righteously spoiled when I have the chance to stop in at Gunther's.  I'm charmed by this place:  the historic ice cream soda shop vibe (OG location est. April 1940) with original (?) wood booths - names carved in through the years, neighborhood character - hehe, huge variety of ice cream flavors and seasonal flavors, yogurt, sherbet,(they also offer no sugar added, no sugar added vanilla and no sugar added black cherry), novelty items, milkshakes, sundaes, floats, sodas, frosts, blended coffees, fruit freezes, 50/50s, Smoothies, Hawaiian Shaved Ice, and let's not forget just-like-home sandwiches, and custom made to order ice cream cakes and pies.  Their emphasis on quality shines through in their products and friendly customer service.

A few of my favorites:  Sidewalk Sundae in a waffle bowl (I refuse to share - mine!mine!mine!), 50/50 - any combo flavor, you can't go wrong, and a sugar cone single-double-triple-wanna dip that in chocolate? - scoop of Pecan Pralines, French Vanilla, Butter Pecan, Espresso Chip, etc.etc.

Check their website or FB page for their featured ice cream flavor of the month!

I'm lactose intolerant, which means any large amount of dairy I consume will inevitably lead to an interesting night on the porcelain throne. Still, I will suffer through this affliction if it means being able to savor a waffle cone filled with the wondrous, creamy delights made inside the walls of Gunther's.

This cozy shop is a perfectly maintained relic of a bygone era. If I squint my eyes just right upon walking in, I can see Biff from "Back to the Future" telling McFly to "make like a tree and get out of here." The samples are generous and addicting. I know I abused my sample privilege trying to narrow down my flavor of choice on my last visit. And did I mention all the ice cream is made right there?

Order a cone or a shake, sit outside on a summer evening or stroll the beautiful surrounding neighborhood. Gunther and company will have to try pretty hard to disappoint this loyal customer!

I was never much of a fan of fruit freezes because I always found them a bit too inconsistent in texture, but I loved the mango 50/50 fruit freeze here. I got the mango 50/50 with black raspberry marble ice cream. The mango was just..yuuum. The ice cream was creamy and smooth. It was probably the best ice cream I've ever had texture wise, but I can't say much about flavor since I pretty much ate every bite with the mango. :9

After my first initial bite, I thought "Man, I wouldn't mind giving up my search for the best Taiwanese shaved ice in the bay area if I could easily go to Gunther's instead." Anyway, I'll definitely have to go back the next time I'm in the area to try the other ice cream flavors. :)

(Edit 10/16/2011) I went back today and had another 50/50 mango with peach ice cream. The peach ice cream didn't strike me as remarkable. It had the same creamy texture but rather bland in flavor. I might as well have stuck with vanilla.

Holy Cow Batman!  How is it that I've lived here for seven years and only just discovered Gunther's?  In a head to head competition with Bi-rite in SF, Gunther's wins no contest on flavor, texture, variety and character.  This is literally the best ice cream that I've ever eaten.  Its so good, that I've stopped eating on Mondays just to keep my calorie balance in check so I can get my Gunther's fix.

I'm not gonna lie.  If they were down to the last scoop of Butter Brickle and I had to choose between taking it or giving to a six year old girl with pink bows, I wouldn't give it to her. I'd take it, and I'd eat it, and I would enjoy it.  Its that good.  That doesn't make me a bad person, it just makes me a committed foodie.  At least that's what I tell myself...

Top picks would have to be birthday cake and mint cookie!

After being called crazy by multiple friends, multiple times, I decided to visit the original Gunther's Ice Cream Parlor. Why did I decide to cut back on sugar, I already want to go again after seeing the ice cream sandwiches.

So I've had their ice cream many times before through a number of restaurants they supply to and have been a lover from the distance. Their green tea ice cream is amazing, like the best I've had yet. I've only had one other flavor but I can't recall the name exactly, something like mocha chip. Anyways I just remember it being pretty good.

I'm not sure if they make their in store ice cream differently than the ones they supply to local restaurants, because I personally feel that every time I go to the original store the ice cream doesn't taste as good. Whether it's the mass amounts of people, Sacramento being hot and dry, or lack of seating, the ice cream there has just been OK for me. My friend took me and although he loves green tea, he said it tasted like avocado and had a terrible after taste and he couldn't even finish it. I felt bad after raving about it, and it did taste a bit odd to me too. I will be back to try their other flavors, I'm not giving up yet!

Overall Gunther's makes great ice cream and serves it in a fun and lively environment. You must try it at the original location or at the dozens of places in Sac that serve it!

I don't know why I haven't reviewed Gunther's earlier, but my family discovered their delicious ice cream late last year after some family friends brought us out for dessert night.  Since then, my family has been avid consumers of their delicous Freezes and their Half-Gallon take home ice creams.

If you want to know what's best here, I can honestly say...EVERYTHING!

But for me, my absolute favorite is their Green Tea ice cream.  I LOVE Green Tea ice cream and was super bummed when Dreyer's stopped making it.  But, when I found out Gunther's had it, I was pushing people out of the way to get to my sacred Green Tea ice cream!

On top of that, their 50-50's are absolutely ridiculous!  The Freezes are all made in house and are super delcious.  My mom loves their 50-50 so much, she will buy containers of Freeze's and stick them in the freezer at home so she has her own private stash.

But, for the creme de la creme of Gunther's, it's definitely their Vanilla Ice Cream.  I know you might be thinking, "WHAT? Vanilla Ice Cream? Come on!" But seriously, their Vanilla is the BEST I have ever had....EVER!

The Vanilla is so rich and creamy, it can make your heart sing.  It's not overly sweet, it's texture is so smooth, and there isn't a lot of air whipped into it, thus, making it the best Vanilla in the world.  To prove it, my family probably has half a dozen empty tupperwares sitting in our house that once held Gunther's Vanilla Ice Cream.

My recommendations: order a 50-50 and experience the sweet tang of the Freeze midst the silkiness of the Vanilla.  You can't go wrong!

There was a point in my life, i ashamedly admit, when I trekked to Gunther's every single day for two weeks straight to obtain a single scoop of their green tea ice cream in a sugar cone.

That was until I realized what the consequences were...torturous long hours at the gym.

However, I  still fondly look back at those wonderful times at Gunther's and recall the subtle sweetness of the green tea accompanied by little nutty bits.

    Oh woe is me.

I'm sure it's been mentioned several times already, but two words come to mind every time I visit: BIRTHDAY CAKE.

Double-scoop, on a waffle cone. Instant happiness right there. There's REAL chunks of cake in there!! You know that sounds delicious...

From the cute decor, to the friendly employees and tasty sweet treats, this is definitely the place to go when you need a sugar-induced boost. Plus it's a great first date place to go to as well.

Gunther's: Worth every single calorie indeed.

I've died and gone to heaven!
First time I ever saw Mudd Pie on a Stick or better yet, Oreo Pie on a Stick.  These are sooo delicious and made so well.  The icecream is at the perfect temperature with its thin shell of chocolate covering the slice.  Also the cookies and crust are just the right texture.

They have other small treat like their choc. covered bananas (yummy)... I would skip out on the choc. covered cherries though.  Their icecream itself is also good too.  This truly is a local favorite for many many decades.  If only I move Gunther's back with me to So Cal!

Absolutely one of my favorite old fashion ice cream shops in Sacramento and possibly anywhere.  Gunther's have been in business for over 70 years and their name "quality" says it all.  This mom and pop joint is truly a classic and is always consistent.  Lots of flavors to choose from and a great place to bring your friends and family to make them feel like a kid all over again.  An absolute must if you live in the area and have not been!

There isn't many places that give me that "wow" factor like Gunther's does.  With all of the ice cream parlors that I've been to throughout California, Gunther's in Sacramento has the consistency as well as flavor that is unbelievably amazing.  It also gives you that feeling that you're truly in an old-fashioned nostalgic ice cream parlor that is straight out of the 1950's/60's.  It's also in an ideal location and every time I've come here, I've always found parking at or around the block.

I've probably been here over a dozen times but this is my first review on it.  I recently made a trip here with my girlfriend on a cool June evening on a Saturday.  I must say, it actually wasn't busy when we got there but by the time we were ready to order at the front counter, there was a line of people towards the main entrance.  After debating whether choosing a sundae or ice cream in a cup, I choose half a scoop of the marble fudge ice cream while the other half is French Vanilla.  My girlfriend orders a strawberry sundae complete with extra strawberries, whipped cream, nuts, and a cherry on top.

We choose on sitting outside as there is plenty of ample seating on the premises of Gunther's.  With the first bite of my ice cream, it truly has that distinctive creamy flavor that sets it in a category all by itself.  Both the marble fudge and French vanilla satisfied my ice cream cravings.  I even love that icy "crunch" that was found in the French vanilla as I know if I were to go back for seconds, I would have to do extra sit-ups when I get home!

Overall, for any out-of-towners who wish to visit Sacramento for the day or weekend; or anyone that has kids craving ice cream, Gunther's delivers in every department.  They also have an excellent variety of shakes, sherbet, novelty flavors, and even sandwiches.  This will always be tops in my book for best ice cream parlor.

I never knew this lil gem was so close to my house!
I'm really not a big fan of ice cream and when I do eat it it's in small amounts or ice cream cake!
Well my parents (that live 3000 miles away) decided to surprise me by ordering me an ice cream cake from Gunther's for my birthday! It was an awesome little surprise especially since I never get to see them. Gunther's takes credit cards over the phone and if you want a specialty cake made it has to be at least 3 days in advance.

Now on to my cake, It was delicious! My least favorite cake is white cake but this one had a unique flavor to it, and the vanilla ice cream with oreo crumbles in it was the perfect match. I never get cravings for ice cream but I've been having a slice of my cake quite often! I want to go back and try some other flavors because I was impressed!

The ice cream here is EXCELLENT my friends.  This is what Ice cream should taste like. You can even see the huge Ice cream machines at the end of the store to see what they're making.

There's really no point in me going down a list of what's good or favorited because I love it all and it's not cause I'm CHUNKY either! maybe...

EITHER WAY, if you want real ice cream go to Gunther's, there's a reason why it's been open this long for AGES.

If ya want cold stone or any other garbage ice cream then go there, what you'll find here is some DAMN good stuff.
