10 reviews for Gunn House Hotel
My friend booked this place for the Blues Festival this weekend. It is a lovely historic building (the dining room is the old speakeasy), but the rooms are comfortable and well appointed and you can't really hear the neighbors. We were on the side of the building (room 15) so heard some street noise, but it's pretty quiet in the wee hours as there's not much open that late. It's a great place if you're a smoker, too - the rooms are non-smoking, but the rooms at the front and the back have wicker chairs and tables with ashtrays on them for you to smoke outside. Also, smoking is allowed by the pool. Just not in the rooms (fine by me!).
The bed in room 15 wasn't that comfy, but my friend said that she had stayed in a few other rooms and they were good. The bathroom has all the mod cons (modern conveniences) - apparently all the rooms were remodeled recently.
The pool was fantastic considering it was hotter than Hades on Saturday so we came back to the hotel for a dip and a disco nap.
Service is friendly and efficient, and the breakfasts...oh yeah, baby...egg bake and the *best* coffee cakes (peach, blueberry, cinnamon, you name it) all freshly baked every morning. Mmmm...
So reasonable too (compared to SF prices, that's fer sher). Definitely a keeper, though if you are a rampant anti-smoker, this would not be the place for you.
While doing research for my recent trip to the USA with my parents and sister, I came across Gun House hotel's website, which made it seem the perfect place to stop on our drive from Yosemite to Lake Tahoe.
Right in the heart of Gold country, the inn promised to be a unique and historic experience, which would be a welcome change from the chain motels.
After a 2 hour journey from Yosemite, leaving the park along the 120, we arrived in Sonora with its quaint town centre. Gunn House is easily spotted along the main street. Its balcony and front porch area certainly brings to mind an olden house as pictured in tourists' mind and the history of the hotel is told in some literature in the bedrooms.
We were in room 7. The rooms retained a lot of the original features and both beds had teddy bears on them though we had brought our own! The room was a good size and the beds comfortable.
The hotel is ideally placed with the main high street literally just 50 yards up the street. We were there quite early in the season and not all the shops were open but there was still an interesting mix of places to browse.
The Innkeeper's Breakfast was as great as had been promised with fresh waffles and savoury tray bakes available along with cold options. We were certainly sent on our way with full stomachs.
So why not 4 stars? Well, it just seemed to me like we were treated like customers rather than guests. Throughout my trips in the USA, the welcome and customer service is usually second to none. At Gunn House, the atmosphere seemed polite rather than truly warm. A shame as this is a lovely and unique historic inn

Just got back from the Gold Country this afternoon, and have to recommend the Gunn House in Sonora! It's an historic hotel (originally constructed in 1850, but added on to since then) that manages to be sort of a hybrid between a motel and a B&B, but manages to avoid the negative aspects of both. Rooms a cozy and decorated with 19th-century antiques. They've recently been renovated and are clean and comfortable. Try to get a room in the back overlooking the pool, as the front of the hotel is along Sonora's main drag. The first night we were there it seemed every other person driving by was on a Hawg with open pipes, but then that's what I keep earplugs in my bag for.
The prices are a bargain, especially when you factor in their innkeeper's breakfast. Amble down to the parlor to chow down on amazing homemade coffee cakes and pastries, fruit, waffles, and a sort of egg and sausage casserole thingie with cheese and artichoke hearts and stuff in it.
Our kids loved the place, too, especially with the teddy bears all around. For dinner, walk across the street to Outlaws BBQ, or check out the Chinese or Indian restaurants next door.
We booked two rooms -rooms 20 and 21 last week and they were quite satisfactory.
These rooms are at the back of the hotel but in room 21 because you have a lovely little balcony overlooking the side parking lot and main street, you do get some street noise.
Room 21 was done is a nice burgundy coloured theme and had two queen beds. Room 20 is for golfers - it has one queen bed and tons of golf related pics and knick knacks.
The hotel is quite interesting - with many levels and stairs to negotiate. The courtyards are nicely outfitted with chairs and tables and plenty of beautiful flowers and shrubs. They even have a fountain/pool with rubber duckies floating along. Brandy, the dog, seems to be a fixture and is a lovely old lab or something, but is very gentle in nature.
Parking is not an issue for they have a street level side parking lot and and up the hill behind the hotel parking lot - the back lot is also easily accessible from the top level of the hotel.
The breakfast was okay - the baked goods were replenished continuously and the waffles (have to wait for the very efficient breakfast lady to make for you) were light and cooked just right. If you like carbs for breakfast you will be in heaven. A very good selection of fresh fruit and orange juice also are available.
All in all a nice, very economical, and very clean place to stay. We'll be back with our family for sure.

Quaint and comfy, this historic inn was a perfect little retreat. My boyfriend and I stayed in Room 10, one of the "super deluxe" rooms on the second floor. It was large (I'd say around 300 sf) with a king sized bed, and sitting area. The furniture and accents transported us back to the late 1800s (it is one of the historic rooms afterall). We loved the little veranda out front and the rocking chairs.
It does face the street so you will hear a little traffic, but even on a Friday night, the town is pretty quiet. The staff was great, the morning breakfast hot and tasty. Loved the waffles, breads. Compared to other B&Bs with similar amenities and breakfast options, the Gunn Hotel was a pretty great deal for $115. It was well worth the room upgrade and we'll definitely be back.
Wonderful place to stay. Reasonable rates, friendly staff, and great memories. We stayed here on our wedding night and for our one year anniversary. As mentioned in the other review, the complimentary breakfast was delicious. I would definitely stay here again!

This place is awesome. I stayed at the Ahwahnee the night before and actually preferred the room here, for a fraction of the cost.
Built in 1850 and renovated back in the 60's, it was called the Gunn House Motor Hotel. It has that super cool roadside motel feel, antiques throughout the rooms, little pool and knick knacks all around. And don't forget Louise hosting the breakfast room with homemade yummy breads, egg quiche, waffles and all the other continentals every morning. At 89 a night, what a bargain! Also try Outlaws BBQ across the street for dinner.

What a beautiful little hotel. I have never had the opportunity to stay here before as I usually stay with family in the area, but I was quite impressed with the updated rooms which still kept a historical feel but delivered modern amenities like a hot shower, comfy beds and quality, soft linens, scented shower gels and lotions and a hair dryer. I also loved the delicate courtyards with water fountains, statuary and flowers. Ample parking was available too. We had a room upstairs over the courtyard - a nice touch if you're staying and want to visit with family or friends outside of the room. It was quiet and private except street noise which filtered around through the bathroom window. The room was a little bit dark, an overheard light would be nice. But the room was very nice with elegant decor, including the bathroom. Definitely a classy touch. The complimentary breakfast was awesome!! Although the "Grand Central" was a bit cold and the music was an odd choice for morning, the food was outstanding. PS....More coffee please? We were all desperate for caffeine and the poor hostess had to run back and forth to perk coffee somewhere far, far away. How about an air pump coffee service (like conferences and large hotels use) which you can make 2 pots ahead of time and still keeps it hot? Also, our housekeeper barged in on me while I was taking a nap---I guess she thought she was being efficient, but it felt a bit violating. And she was in one big damn hurry to kick us out even though our check-out time wasn't until 12. Finally, we were disappointed that the large, lovely pool just below our room was closed due to needing a updated drain. Just be aware that cell phones probably won't work and there are no phones in the room. Also there is no wireless access for computers. In a way, it's nice to escape the technology after you get over the panicky feeling of being disconnected.
Overall, a very nice surprise....and an elegant touch. Keep up the good work!

Just got back from a trip through Gold Rush Country, and we were lucky enough to stay a night at the Gunn House Hotel! it's a picturesque place with comfortable rooms and a nice little pool. The best thing of all was the breakfast--all sorts of yummy choices served in a beautiful room with fresh flowers everywhere and a poolside patio. Quite a bit of bang for not much buck. We loved it!
