They have very fresh and tasty food. The egg rolls are always delicious and not too greasy. The sweet and sour sauce is homemade and very addictive. This is one of the better American style Chinese restaurants in the city. They have been around for decades and are the only Chinese restaurant to participate in the Taste of Chicago [I believe] since year one.
I love the Chinese Spaghetti. It is made with your choice of meat. The sauce is full of veggies with a gingery sweet taste. It has a good amount of burn, too for those who like it spicy. It seems like an "oyster sauce" and molasses type of base.
I've never been disappointed. We happily leave Chinatown to go here.
Jean is the lady behind the counter. Her husband is in the kitchen. They are always nice and very happy to see you. A wonderful family restaurant.
Average food. No ambiance. Helpful, genuinely kind (if slightly brusque) service.
Our server had a great memory--she recalled seeing me walk by the day before, checking out the menu posted outside on my way home from work, based on the jacket I was wearing.
We walked into a birthday/welcome home from Afghanistan party thrown by some regular patrons, and no one minded the interruption. The service was initially a little slow, but chattiness and overindulgence in our (my) question-asking made up for it.
Everyone else at the table seemed to enjoy their food. My dish was not on the menu, whipped up special just for me: cashew veggies in a gluten-free sauce. The cashews, server remarked, were fresh, not the canned/bagged shit, and she was dead on. They were so fresh that one night in the fridge cause the leftover cashews to absorb much of the sauce and soften. The veggies were well-prepped. The sauce was a bit bland--needed a kick, like pepper or tamari sauce or something. Next time I'll know. And yes, there will be a next time.
We received a plate of sugar cookies along with the fortune cookies at the end of the meal, and I was handed a free egg roll coupon when I paid the tab. They also sell stuffed birds that tweet when you squeeze them.
Bleck and yuck. You know how crappy Chinese food can still be satisfying? It is like a good greasy burger! This was crappy Chinese food with absolutely nothing satisfying about it! We ordered spicy black bean chicken and mushroom egg foo young. We ate it.... it fed us....but we threw away our left overs because we new we would not want to revisit it the next day. I experienced serious take-out regret. I should have gone to Silver Seafood!
I ordered for take out about 10 minutes before they closed. I didn't realized they closed at 9 - but the lady on the phone didn't seem to mind that I was placing an order 10 minutes before they closed.
I asked if they used MSG and the nice woman on the phone said yes, but that everything was made to order so if I didn't want something with MSG, they would just not cook it with MSG. That was very nice. I ordered the Empress Chicken and a small order of egg rolls. The egg rolls had MSG and the lady said they were pre-made but that was okay.
I quickly jetted over to the location and walked in. There were a few tables full - all of the patrons seemed to be having a nice meal. The women who answered the phone greeted me. She was super sweet. She even gave me a free wood carved flower! They apparently sell them, along with a few other odd items like stuffed animals.
The place was pretty old looking, but still clean.
The Empress Chicken was pretty good - 4 stars. I would order it again. The white rice was kind of tough - but that could be because it was the end of the night. The egg rolls were good - but kind of weird looking stuff inside of them, but still good. The portion was huge - it was shareable.
I may go back and try some other items.
File this place under "looks scary so I avoided it for five years and now realize that you can't judge a book by it's cover and I missed out on tasty food with in walking distance". Since we are regulars at Nancy's Pizza I finally decided to read up on Guey Lon's Yelp reviews. They were pretty awesome so we placed a carry out order. We have now been there twice and both times were really pleased with the food. Fresh ingredients with distinct flavors-something we find lacking in a lot of the local chinese places. I will rave about the crab rangoon and Mandarin Shrimp and Oyster Sauce Beef. We look forward to checking out more of the menu!
I went there because of the other two reviews, and it was just like they mentioned, very friendly! My portion was a great size and now I have lunch for tomorrow.
The egg rolls were awesome! I even got a coupon for next time I go in.
YUM! I stopped by here last night because of the reviews you guys have posted and once again, Yelpers did not steer me wrong! I wasn't sure what I wanted when I came in, and the woman who I think was the owner made some great suggestions and they were super accommodating. Since I'd read that the egg rolls were good, I wanted to try them - only to find out it's an order of 4, which is a bit much for little old me. I asked if there was a half order and she said sure - or "we can just make you one if you want."
The food was definitely cooked to order, fresh, and flavorful and the owner and staff could not have been any nicer. This place is fantastic - GO GO GO!
I think that this place has some of the best Mongolian Beef in the city. The lady who runs the place is very friendly & talkative. This place has been around for so long it's famous!
Ok another great chinese place that I have been going to for years and they are even in the Taste of Chicago !!!!!! even better to enjoy down town and a great place with great food... This is definetly one of the stops to make at the Taste if you go. What I aslo love from them is the chinese spaghetti also I have not found another place that offers this and "Gene" the owner once told me that her son Devon Invented it and put it on the menu???? IDK but I truely love the food here its great...
Step inside this dingy little store front and be prepared to be treated like family. I worked for these fine, fine people during one horribly disgusting Taste of Chicago and they were nothing but wonderful! The current owner inherited the restaurant from HIS father and, if all is right in this world, their children will take the reigns when they're ready to pass them on.
I believe this place has been around since the early 40's, It sure looks like it! It's like the place that time forgot, aka gramma's messy sitting room. There's crap piled up all over the place, it's dusty, it's got absolutely no ambience, but so what? I think ambience is over rated and if you have good company with you and a good meal, shut the fuck up and be happy!
A good friend of mine's family has been coming here for over 20 year and for good reason! They have the best egg rolls I've ever had. They're not your typical cabbage, shrimp, and ground pork at all. I don't even know if I can explain them properly, but they have shredded beef and cabbage and that's it but they're so much more than that. There's other secret stuff in there for sure, but it's delicious. They make their own sweet n' sour sauce (see if you can guess the secret ingredient I know it because I worked there ha ha on you!) and have the best crab rangoon I've ever had. They're huge, piping hot, and full of fluffy mounds of cream cheese YUM!
Do you feel like you're coming down with a cold? Stomach been hurting? The chicken rice soup from Guey Lon is better than any pill you're taking. Once I came into work even though I was sick and Jean, the owner's wife, sent me right back home with a big carton of the stuff. I think it saved my life and I still go out of my way to get it when I'm feeling down and out. They also have excellent egg foo young. The only thing I would really, really, really stay away from Is the Chinese Spaghetti. It's really, really, really bad. Sorry guys, but it is. They use KETCHUP as the sauce. Nuff said.
I don't think they deliver, but just swing on by and pick it up!
Been eating here since my grandmother owned the neighboring shop in the late 70's. It's great to see the same family running it. Probably my favorite egg rolls anywhere. I need to go back soon.
A lot of people have probably had Guey Lon's fried food at Taste of Chicago, where they usually have a booth.
This is a great Chinese restaurant which serves a mostly non-Chinese clientele (their menu reflects this, for example they are popular for their egg rolls and crab rangoon, both of which are in fact delicious). But while this isn't a super-Chinese style establishment, all their food is really good.
The real superlative here is that the owners, Jean and Dan, are perhaps the friendliest Chinese restaurant proprietors I know of... they remember and care about their customers and make every visit more pleasant.
What a great place. Great Mom and Pop Place (Jean and Dan, are perhaps the friendliest). 51 years, Guey Lon has served Cantonese cuisine in this Jefferson Park neighborhood.
One thing to remember here, everything is made homemade from scratch. So if you are looking for fast food in 10 min. forget it., take it elsewhere. But, if you want good home-cooked type meals then come on in a sit a spell. This place is worth it.
Egg Rolls Rock. Take Out and Dine In only
This little place is great.
Top notch take out. As previous reviews said, everyone was super nice. The food was very fresh & light tasting. The chicken was very tasty and not fatty. The egg rolls were awesome as was the veggie fried rice. Just wish they delivered, but its pretty close by anyway! Great place to go for some tasty food.
No no no! I have tried this place a few times, trying to be fair (maybe they just had a bad day?) but I have always been disappointed with the food here. I used to work in the area and phoned my orders ahead, but each time they would forget to get to it until I showed up in the restaurant. After those few disappointments with food and service, I gave up. Never again.
