I liked this place. We were seated right away. The food was "okay". The margaritas were great. I liked the interior. Service was good.

Wasn't the best mexican I've ever had, but we had a fine time.

With all of the amazing tex-mex in Austin, I can't understand why anyone ever eats here.  The margaritas and salsa are crappy, the rice has zero flavor and the tacos are just plain disgusting.  The fact that it was featured in one of Quentin Tarantino's movies instead of Trudy's, Maudie's, Vivo or Torchy's made me want to die.

The wait was 1.5 hours when we got there and we hemmed and hawed about staying/going. the kindly hostess (whom I tipped after our  meal) gave us a tip to wait for the front room tables to open up, as they are first come first served. yay! We seated within 15 minutes!

Atmosphere is festive and fun. Food was great! I got the Picadillo taco (beef, carrots and potatoes) and Al Pastor Chicken Taco (w/pineapple, cilantro, added avocado to it). Both tacos were excellent, our server kept her cool even being really busy. You can't argue with that!

Before my dad retired, he used to meet me and my sister here for lunch.  We would always begin our meal with the chips and Queso with my sister grabbing the salsas at the salsa bar.  I miss those times.

My favorite meal at Guero's is the Quesadilla plate.  I was happy to find that they will make the quesadillas with corn tortillas!  Nice for a person who can't have gluten.  Dad always got either the tortilla soup, chocked full of veggies, chicken and pieces of corn on the cob or green chicken enchiladas.

I think Guero's will always be a "see and be seen" kind of place.  Lots of legislative staffers and lobbyists hang out here plus the South Congress and west Austin crowd. The food is okay and always consistent.  With all the competition now, Guero's may have to take a back seat.  Sure, Bill Clinton ate here but so what?  I don't get how that makes the food any better.

OFFICIAL ROT RALLY REVIEW 6/13/08. My wife and I snagged a seat on the porch last night at Guero's for what was a good night for motorcycles galore and the folks that bring some of that 35 million a year to our awesome city.

Despite the wait inside the restaurant, we were able to snag an outside table immediately. My wife and I both ride with the exception of this weekend as we let the ROT participants have there fun.

I always start every meal at Guero's with the mini al pastor tacos. They are simply without equal to any others I have had in A-town (including Angies). Both entrees Grilled Shrimp and the Veggie Alambres were delicious and filling. This place also has my favorite Shrimp fajitas in the world. The difference is the grilled tomatillo slices in with the traditional onions and peppers served on a sizzling platter.

We didn't see as many motorcycles in the area as years past. We were still happy to sit in the shade with a cold beer and a margarita and watch the bikes go back and forth. One ROT participant we sat next to from McKinney said he always comes to Guero's for at least two meals during the weekend as he has been coming here for over 10 years. He says he can't get whole wheat tortillas within 100 miles of his hometown.

The food is good; probably 3 stars. The other star you get from the atmosphere. You are sitting on the sidewalk in SOCO. What could be better? The answer is this weekend with extra motorcycles!! Watch out for bikers...

Fuck this place. Every time I get conned into eating here by one of my misled friends I feel like one stupid, stupid gringo. Next time you get the Guero's urge just picture the restaurant owner rolling around on a pile of money, twiddling his mustache and cackling maniacally as he stares into a hidden webcam of you sucking down processed cheese like its exotic manna from heaven.
How appropriate that the name of this joint is "Guero's" because apparently us white folk love to shell out dinero for faux mexican atmosphere. Gueros indeed.
P.S: If you think you're actually eating genuine tacos al pastor then you are most likely a tourist from Michigan. Come then, Marge, and allow me to guide you over to east 7th for some puff tacos at "Angies" or "De Las Casa" for the best enchiladas you ever put in your mouth. Then you will repeat after me: "THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR SHITTY SALSA."

This place is supposed to be pretty legendary, yeah? Sorry...I'm one of those dirty tourist types. Just went for lunch. Less than impressive, in my opinion. But then again, I guess I'm just a Guero, though.

My GF and her friends have been raving about the queso in Austin. Forgive my ignorance, but if you told me I was eating Tostitos brand cheese sauce from any 7-Eleven, I would have believed you.

The margaritas were really good though. They use fresh key lime juice, no sweet and sour mix. That stuff tastes like arse.

Eh...with so many other great spots to eat, I see no need to come here again.

Long live Bevo.

It pains me to give this place even one star.  The obligatory star.  This place BLOOOOOOOWWWWS.  For all the celebrities and SXSW people who come to town and read their little hotel brochures to find out where to go...to them I say...PUT THAT CRAP DOWN!  Why are you reading hotel literature??  You don't go in there and read the Bible, do you?   Why are you not on Yelp, for Pete's sake??   Get with it!

This place is so freaking terrible, I can hardly bring myself to explain further.  BUT I WILL:

Ridiculously long wait
VERY VERY VERY average to below average food

That is all.

I've tried. I've tried. And I have tried again. Sure the service is OK. And the crowd can be nice. Decor and ambiance are certainly pleasant even if the restaurant is a bit loud. The food? Well thats where I'm goin. As much as I WANNA KNOW I simply cannot distinguish what it is that makes this place so darn popular. I've waited an hour or more for a table. Thats not a plus. I've tried about everything they have. Please FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND EVERYTHING HOLY somebody explain it to me.  It is the same exact food as a hundred other mexican places in texas. No worse certainly but surely no better. Help me please, someone, unlock the mystery of Gueros unbelievable success.

My favorite reasons to end up at Guero's on a Saturday afternoon are the great margaritas and the tacos al pastor appetizers.  The Silver Train is my favorite margie, but there's also a nice selection of tequilas for your choosing.  We usually sit in the bar area, and being afternoon drunks, never have to wait long if we decide to get a table in the dining room.  We've had many, many great times here, and as touristy as SoCo has gotten, Guero's is still a fun place to while away a few hours drinking, munching, and people watching.  As for the tex-mex, if you get away from the typical enchiladas, etc. and go for the more traditional mexican dishes (like the snapper), you might be surprised at the yummy goodness you'll find. At least, I find it after 4 or 5 Trains. Yeah. Woo Woo Chugga Chugga Chugga Chugga!

I have only successfully eaten here once, but that was enough.  It wasn't terrible, but I wouldn't go back unless I had a compelling reason to.

When we went, it was terribly crowded and we were told to expect an hour to an hour and a half wait.  (!)  We made our way over to the bar area, where we just decided to stay, rather than waiting forever.  Our waitress was nice enough, the seating was kind of crappy (but we were in the bar area, so that's somewhat understandable), and the food was mediocre and overpriced.  The guacamole was meh, the queso was liquidy and my chicken taco was OK.  My boyfriend got a burrito that was *huge* and he seemed to like it.

The only other time I tried to go there was when my mother was in town visiting and we were wandering SoCo one afternoon and decided to stop in for lunch.  We were finally seated after a VERY long time of hanging about and wondering if there was actually anybody working.  Then, when she got up to go to the bathroom she noticed an...odor...coming from the kitchen that was...unpleasant...to say the least.  So we left and went elsewhere.

Oh, and it's way too loud and they have some really weird pricing.  (Extras are *per taco*?  Huh?)

I really was far, far too drunk to recall anything for a decent review, but feel compelled as a visitor to Austin to provide just a little bit of input. After all, many visitors to Austin plan to get as drunk as I did on my first trip there...

If you go with a large group, be prepared for a wait, and do it in the garden. Don't let the smells from Home Slice Pizza deter you. Indulge in the chip and salsa serve-yourself section at the bar, but don't eat three basketsful, thereby killing any appetite you'd need to properly enjoy your meal. Drink beer and 'ritas. A lot of beer and 'ritas. Enjoy the sounds of the band, feel the breeze, and be happy that you're alive.

Oh, right, the food. I ordered the chicken enchiladas and I seem to recall they were good, but I was toofa king full on chips and salsa and toofa king drunk to really remember.

I have no idea what all the fuss is about. I got tricked into going here. This place is so TEX-MEX. Hahaha...and Indie G's review is so right. To pay the price here for tex-mex is so ridicoulous. I fall over laughing at how many people keep on going here and keep on getting swindled. Go to the east side for real mexican food. I promise for those of you that think this place is great, it will literally blow your mind. The portions at those places are enormous too. I chuckled at how much they gave me for the price.

Maybe because I'm from Houston (we have so much better food, and if you think I'm lying go do your research), but this place would be considered another Taco Bell like place.

I love Austin and I love this place!
We went for breakfast one morning and our entire party (four of us) loved it. The migas was especially good, and the chorizo was some of the best I've ever had.
Our friends had lunch here the previous day and enjoyed it enough to come for breakfast the next day.
Our server was quick and friendly.
(Is it me, or is everyone in Austin nice?)
I can't wait to go back.  Great restaurant, great town.

I really have no complaints about Guero's but I don't understand what the big deal is.  The food is okay...just okay and nothing more.  In a town that has so many great Mexican restaurants, why settle for okay?  I do love the house margarita, just wish it didn't come in a child-sized cup for 5 bucks!

Loved it. The tomatillo sauce is to die for, the migas were really yummy, and they've got a centanario (aka my new tequila of choice) margarita. Plus really good, cheap prices. No wonder friends love it so much!

A classic establishment in Austin, it's always been famous for its food.  So by the time I got around to visiting it many years ago, I came away thinking, "That was it?"  It was okay, but there are better establishments for this kind of food in Austin.  One of their claims to fame was that former Governor Dubya loved the place.

I remember going to a Bad Religion show at Stubb's about 4 years ago, and the band said, "So I've always heard how the Mexican food here is supposed to be awesome...and everyone kept on telling us to go to Guero's."  I frowned, knowing that their opinion on Austin Mex would be forever tainted...and said out loud, "Eh...it's all right..."  Then the band did the so-so hand motion and said, "Eh...it was all right" before diving into another song.

This is one of those places I wanted to love, but I can't figure out what all the fuss it about.  We've eaten here 3 times - the first time, the food and service were good.  The second, the food was below average (none of us finished our meals) and service (on a Friday night) was poor.  The third time, around 10am on a weekday, our service was good but when I picked up my spinach & bean taco, about a teaspoon of oil poured out of it (seriously).  It turned my stomach and that was it for me & Gueros.  There's so many other better Mexican & Tex-Mex places around that giving it 2 stars is generous.  Skip the food and enjoy the great live music & drinks on their patio underneath the giant oak tree.

I hit this classic SoCo establishment for the first time back in February. It was late on a sunday, and the place was PACKED, inside and out. It was just two of us, so we were able to get a table towards the back. Our server was friendly and sarcastic [a bonus in my book] and the food came out fast.

I don't do salsa, so I had no reason to go to the salsa bar, but my date said the salsa was terrific. My enchilada's were super cheesy and the verde sauce was good, but spicier than I thought it would be.

I'd probably go back, but not during lunch time or dinner time. This isn't a place that is worth a long wait, in my book.

3 stars for the food and one extra star for the drinks. I'm not a huge drinker but I decided to try to their Top Shelf Cabo Wabo Margarita and that thing was strong but smooth.

I live within walking distance of Gueros, so I'm sure I'll be back.  I wouldn't drive across town for it, since it's basically like all other Tex-Mex but it's not terrible by any means. I had the beef fajitas and I was so stuffed from chips that I ate like half a taco, my honey had some dinner combo and the one bite I took of the enchilada was pretty good.  Our waiter was on top of things but  not annoying which was nice.  Honestly, next time we go back I'll probably just have drinks and chips and Queso because that's all I ever really crave when it comes to Tex-Mex.

I first tried Guero's about 4 years ago -- I got the quesadillas and HATED them. I swore I'd never go back.

But I did go back. About 6 months ago. And I've been going back at least a couple of times per month.

The tacos are where it's at, I've found. Love their sirloin tacos, and the black beans are tasty. Prices are a little high, but I think you're paying for the location and the touristy-ness.

This place is so much fun -- it's always crowded (but they get you in pretty fast), the service is excellent, and the salsa bar is awesome. A great place to take out-of-town guests before you check out the shops on Congress.

I've been frequenting this place for 5 yrs. now. Something happened. First of all it used to be way more packed all the time and that's gotta say something right?  The food was so good and now, just so so. With all the Mexican food in Austin, somebody's gotta step up.  Also, the service is pretty absent that one may slip out without paying. ...not that I would do that.  I just have an active imagination.

Everyone in town told me to head here.  So, I did.  I'm no expert on TexMex or Mexican food, but my overall opinion of this place was that it was as good as it gets.

Why then only 4 stars?

To this day, I don't know what constitutes good Mexican food.  It's a matter of constant debate with everyone I know and with every review I've ever read of every Mexican joint everywhere.  My general opinion of most Mexican places is that THEY ALL SUCK!!   Everything always tastes like everything else.  I can never tell what the hell it is I'm eating.

Guero's is what I consider to be good Mexican.  It demonstrated all the hallmarks of actual food.  For instance, I could discern by a mere glance what was on my plate.  Fish tacos in a flour tortilla looked suspiciously like a flour tortilla, with fish in it.  Some corn salsa stuff with cilantro and what seemed like sour cream.  The fish was moist, juicy, and appeared to be nicely seared with a nice smokey flavor.  I really dug on the Fish Taco in Flour.

I enjoyed the place and the Fish Taco so much, I stopped in a few more times over the course of my trip.  Here's what else I observed.

The margaritas were OK.  The Salsa bar was real good, but the cups could be larger.   I tried the huevos rancheros with a side of chorizo and can't rave enough about them.  RAVE RAVE RAVE.  And the coffee straight black, was unbelievable.  I didn't expect the coffee to compliment my meal as well as it did.  But it was bold enough for the job.

I didn't think the prices were so high, but I'm from where I"m from and everything everywhere seems cheaper to me by a good 20 percent.   The staff was nice and attentive and the crowd that ate and drank there seemed diverse and cool.   People actually held eye contact and smiled and didn't freak out if you talked to them.  In fact, complete strangers actually initiated conversation with other complete strangers and no one came out the worse for wear.  Again, maybe this is normal behavior, but in Connecticut.......NO ONE SMILES.  AND PLEASE DON'T TALK TO ANY OF US.   We think you're trying to sell us something.

Go to Guero's.  It's a nice place to visit.

Some of this review written with tongue planted firmly in cheek.  I love NEW HAVEN.

Ugh, where do I start?

When I first moved to Austin I use to frequent Guerro's lot. The price WAS right and the food was decent, especially the enchiladas verde.

Later, when I was a chauffeur I use to take celebrities there; they wanted Tex-Mex and something Austiny. Guerro's was it, and they loved it.

Fast-forward to now. The food is crap and the prices are outrageous. Last night I had my usual enchiladas verde and could not finish the meal. It's not that this is a one-time-deal, but my last severe meals here have been absolute crap. I will never, ever, eat here again.

If you ever eat at Guerro's, pray you had a large lunch, it's First Thursday or you are only there for the cheap Tecates and Dos Equis.

Location.  Location.  Location.  This place has it.  You can put your name on the waiting list, grab an early David Cronenberg cult film at Vulcan, and maybe catch a few Happy Hour songs at The Continental Club while you wait for your table.  The place is crawling with life.  Lots of great people watching.  Good social buzz.  Fun place to see a cross-section of Austin.  The historic building has nice open feel inside.  Yes, the food is average.  Yes, the al pastor tacos are made for Oompa Loompas--way too small and too dry.  But--the wait staff is usually friendly and flirty--our last server was anyway.  And in Guero's, you just feel like you are in the center of it all.  I like being in the center--sometimes.  And even if everyone in the center is gleefully eating and paying too much for mediocre food, it's still enjoyable.

I used to LOVE this food, but perhaps it was just the alcohol thinking. Everytime I go back, the food and the service gets worse. The bartendars are nice though and I do like the mango margaritas.
They do not have mexican martinis.
The clientele is mixed, the atmosphere is casual.

Out of Towner alert!!!  I have been to this place once, and that will probably be my only visit.  This was the first stop on what turned out to be a multi-stop and multi-drink bachelor party two days before the wedding.  (Bachelor parties should never be that close to the wedding day for too many reasons to get into here in this space.)  Anyway, we stopped here because we had a local directing the festivities, and I trusted him since Austin was his town.

Our table was not ready when we arrived, so we went north a hundred feet to their beer garden/music stage area.  Very cool area.  I ordered a Shiner Bock and listened to some lame band play a John Cougar Mellencamp cover.  (Well, ain't that America for you and me...)  It was at this moment I truly felt like I was in Texas, and that my pansy California ass could be kicked at any moment.  A momentary digression on Shiner Bock...gawddamn that's good beer!  I wish we could get some of them suds in California.

When our table was ready we walked into the main restaurant and sat down.  Very loud.  Super loud.  Once again, to an outsider this place looked like what a Tex-Mex place that is actually in Texas should look like.  (My guess is that locals despise the decor.)  We ordered some more beers and some margaritas.  Our local guide told us that these were real margaritas and not the crap other places serve with sour mix: just tequila, triple sec, and lime juice.  I was a little scared because this gringo don't do tequila.  However, these margaritas were exactly like the menu said...smooth.

I had a shrimp taco and a fish taco.  The fish taco was excellent, but the shrimp taco was not very good.  I compensated by consuming vast amounts of chips and queso.  Loved the queso.  Then we headed out into the cool Austin night in search of more bachelor party shenanigans with full stomachs and bladders full of Shiner Bock and margaritas.

When I die, I've asked to be wrapped in six-foot corn tortilla, covered in queso, and dropped into the Gulf of Mexico.  I've eaten WAY more than my share of both Mexican food and seafood... so it's just my way of givin' back.

That said, I'm not so crazy about Guero's-mex.  Love their salsas but hate the thimbles they use for bowls... but the self-serve salsa bar is giddy-up good.  The only other thing I love is their Al Pastor tacos.  Naughty good.

I'd probably go just 3 stars but I'm bumpin' 'em up another star for the floors.  Yup... cool floors.  Old school hardwood that has a story to tell.

Check it out... and tell 'em Don Con Queso sent ya by.

Fresh Mexican food, including fish tacos done right and fresh pico (though really small bowls, cmon man...give me a bucket of the stuff).

I'm sick of TexMex so to go to a place that serve more of the Mexican and less of the Texan was great.

The food wasn't super-rich homemade authentic Mexican, but still tasty. My fish tacos with the tequila-mayo white sauce were delish! I had a couple house margaritas, and like the tiny salsa bowls, the margaritas came in tiny glasses full of ice. Boo! Look, my glass is empty already. . . guess I'll take another. I see where they make the money.

Overall a fun place with good food and good service.

It's not great and it's not awful.  I found it to be one of those in-between places that I probably wouldn't go to again, but I would hesitate to speak negatively about it.

The Guero's Dip is pretty tasty...and so are their black beans and rice.  Besides that, it's nothing to freak out about.

I only went there because it was in the movie Deathproof.

Why would you ever eat here?  This place sucks.  The enchiladas are so average.  I could get a better one at Piggly Wiggly.

The margaritas here are nothing to brag about.  There is supposed to be some tartness to a 'rita. These were not inspiring at all of any accolades. They get served in small glasses that are half-filled with ice.  One of those convinced me not to order any more.

On a friend's recommendation, I had the fish tacos.  Decent.  Another in our party had a salad which was half onions.  The service was adequate.  Just an uninspiring visit all around.  This place reeks of has-been-itis, coasting along on its rep and an appearance in "Deathproof" to keep it afloat.

If I'm down that way I'd rather go to Curra's, Polvo's, or even Trudy's(just for drinks).

Guero's is another real good breakfast spot in a town that has a ton of them. It resides in a historic building that creates a spacious and informal feel. They offer tasty Ruta Maya coffee and great breakfast tacos.

i don't know why people come here. It's obviously not for the food, which is not and has never been good. It's over priced, as well, from the drinks to the "Taco Cabana" style food (as a previous person said). I came here once and got a moldy flan and wasn't even offered to have it taken off my bill. And who charges $5.50 for a well margarita?

Is it because it's a see and be seen sort of place? Is that why? Is it because it's some sort of "Austin Institution?" I really just don't get it.

Guero's is half diner, half taco joint, and half acid trip (yes THREE halves!).  It holds a great place on South Congress.

The tex-mex fare tasted great to my untrained Chicago 'buds.  I especially loved the salsa bar with 3 different types of salsa--chunky tomato, smokey spicy, and mellow green--what a fantastic concept!
Our server was fantastic--cracking jokes and keeping up with the best of em!  She kept us on our toes!

Finally, my margarita was especially strong, which I especially appreciated. :)

Guero's employs the world's worst hostess.  I've also seen her waiting tables before, but she is usually moping her way to a table with menus in hand, studiously ignoring the people she is supposed to be leading to the table.  The last time she seated my party, another host told her that we were a party of four, and she grabbed four menus and then walked away without looking at any of us or asking us to follow her or addressing/acknowledging us in any way.  She maintained the same morose-bordering-on-angry look on her face the entire time, without even a flicker of a change of expression.  She made her way circuitously to a table and threw our menus down as she passed the table without pausing (literally, threw them so that the stack of menus fanned out all across the table) and then continued walking directly away from us, never once turning to look at us or speaking to us, or checking to see that we had found the table.  That takes some balls.

Throughout that meal, I watched her treat other customers the same way, time after time.  It finally became funny to me, because, really, how can Guero's not know that she's Austin's biggest asshole?  The reason they choose to keep her on mystifies me, but she was still there the last time I went.

I am giving Guero's three stars because of a few specific items.  I love the queso flameado with chorizo.  I also think they make excellent margaritas, among the best in town, although they are too small and too expensive (I have occasionally been served a margarita that was WAY too sour or much too sweet, but they usually get it right).  The rest of the menu is iffy--I've had many mediocre things, but only a few really bad things.  And to top it all off, the menu is poorly designed.  Two stars might actually be a more appropriate rating, but, for the moment at least, Guero's third star is still sputtering along on the fumes of nostalgia.

Meh.

I lived in the PNW for almost ten years before moving to Austin and I was going insane at the lack of decent Mexican/Tex Mex food (once at a "Mexican" restaurant, we were served a pitcher of Hi-C Ecto Cooler spiked with rubbing alcohol posing as "margaritas"; also, you can't buy green salsa anywhere).  I'd read other meh reviews about Guero's here, but I figured my palate might be more forgiving and easily confused by not-so-great food.  Well, it didn't happen.

Not that it was bad, because it wasn't.  It was just very forgettable.  Beans and rice were pleasantly bland.  Salsa was nothing to write home about; neither was the queso.  Drinks were good, and the fish tacos were pretty good.  Our server was very nice and attentive, especially considering how busy it was at the time (Friday night).

Anyway, yeah, meh.  Three stars for good service and the fact that I vaguely remembered what this kind of food was supposed to taste like.

The food is good. It's your standard Mexican fare. Good selection of fresh salsas. But it's all about the queso.

I agree with Donna. I don't get it, either. I've had a few enjoyable drinks here on First Thursday, but food-wise? Never been happy.

After a long walk (12 miles) on Town Lake, a group went there. My migas were so greasy and were..just...so...blah.  You'd think I'd be super hungry, but I didn't even want to finish it.

I've been there for lunch years and years ago and I was recently reminded why I always offer other suggestions. I think there are so many better places in Austin. Yes, you can be seen here...but why, when you can get better food elsewhere?

We were at a large table and had good service (there's your second star), but I would not and do not pick Guero's as a place to eat.
