A Welcome Step Back in Time!

No trip to San Antonio is complete without Breakfast at Guenther House. This Restaurant / Museum / & old time store located next to the Pioneer Flour Mills in the Historical District of San Antonio is a step back in time.
We usually eat out under the trellised patio, but theres plenty of great seating indoors. Theres plenty to see while you wait to be seated (theres always a short wait) Walk the grounds, walk by the river, wander through the old house, or visit the store. You can order a traditional breakfast or one of the house specials. They also serve lunch. (Brunch?) All baked items are made from the mills ingredients, so everything is fresh right out of the oven. Not your greasy spoon fare - think pastries, pancakes, biscuits, and fruit, etc. Just amazing food.
Service is warm and friendly, and the whole experience is relaxing and rejuvenating before making that grueling trip back home. Easy to find and ample parking. (Side Note from one of my trips: If theres a Tour Bus in the parking lot, you might want to visit another time, cause the wait will be quite long.)

While Guenther House is open for both breakfast and lunch, breakfast-time is definitely when you'll want to hit up this place.

The location in South Town is beautiful. Located by the river, it's a quaint old German home. There is seating both indoors and out. Don't be concerned about our "OMG IT'S TOO HOT" or "OH CRAP WHEN DID IT GET SO COLD" weather fluctuations, either - outdoors has water misters in the summer and heaters in the winter, so it's not unpleasant.

I've never been to Guenther House for lunch, so I can only speak on breakfast - but I can speak on it very well. It's my go-to place to take out of town tourists. They are always charmed. For weekend breakfast, be sure to get there early and be prepared for a wait either way. There is a gift shop a few floors up in which to bide your time (where you can buy plenty of Pioneer mixes if you didn't get enough of the food while you were there), or you can hang out outside on the benches near the complimentary coffee.

I've had a few dishes, and these are my top three breakfast choices:

    1. Biscuits and gravy. Oh my. Their biscuits are so fluffy and delicious, and the gravy is thick and amazing with sausage chunks in it. Yes, I could eat it for days... and I would if I weren't worried about the giant fatness it would cause.

    2. Fruit and coffee cake. Their pastries are delicious. If I'm not feeling like pouring 1.5 cups of gravy into my gullet (see above), I'll pick this. The fruit is fresh and tasty, and you get some sugar cake to balance out the health of it all.

    3. Waffles with fruit. The waffles are great too. The waffle holes are big enough to hold a good amount of syrup and whipped cream, which is one of the things I judge my waffles on. Two thumbs up, waffles!

Spent my honeymoon in San Antonio, and while on a Segway Tour, our tour guide mentioned they did a breakfast Segway tour that included breakfast at the Guenther house.  Since we were already on a tour, we decided to just go to the Guenther house later in our stay to experience the fresh baked goodness our tour guide spoke of.

When we arrived, we were somewhere between breakfast, and lunch times and apparently it was the perfect time, immediately after we were seated a huge line of people showed up.  I chose to have a tortilla soup even though our tour guide had gone on and on about the waffles, and how the flour was made onsite, never bagged it went straight from production to the kitchen, etc.  But I wasn't in a real breakfast mood.  The soup was OK.  The side of biscuits I ordered were phenomenal.

They are huge, one biscuit is the size of two Popeye's biscuits.  They are fluffy, and warm and when you bite into them heat and the texture just make you feel like it's melting in your mouth. The preserves were also really tasty.  Our waiter was very attentive, the atmosphere was laid back and relaxed and I loved all the sconces, and chandeliers with dragons, etc.  You could tell this was an old house and it had that kind of charm about it.

I went to the gift shop and bought lots of the large post cards with biscuit photos to mail our friends.  I wanted to make sure the next time they were to San Antone they had these amazing biscuits!

This was a good spot for breakfast.

We split an order of their Cinnamon Roll, which was a good and nice way to start the meal.  I had their "Favorite Breakfast Platter", which was a generous plate filled with their Buttermilk Biscuits, Country Gravy, River Mill Preserves (Peach), Fruit and Sausage.  While I thought the gravy was great, I thought the biscuits were pretty good and not necessarily fantastic...they were definitely fluffy and had good shape, but they lacked a bit of richness I would expect from biscuits.

The service was attentive and friendly.  I'd visit this spot again, but probably order something else just to try their other options.

I agree with the reviews saying that Guenther House is over-rated.  The food is good, but not quite good enough to merit waiting so long and paying so much.

The atmosphere was cute, yet crowded, and the property was very pretty.  We waited about an hour to get our table, and then maybe 25 to 30 minutes then to get our food.  By which time my stomach had already given up and eaten itself.

Was a neat, new place to grab breakfast, but I don't think I'd go back.  There are places with breakfast that is cheaper and just as good, without the wait.

Beautiful location, OK food. Was a little surpirsed by the limited breakfast menu, but everything was tasty. Portions were a little small so may want to order up when looking at stacks of pancakes, eggs, etc.

The highlight was wandering the grounds while waiting for a table. I don't think I would do it at the height of summer, but for early fall it was perfect.

3 star food, four star locationThis restaurant is ground floor of a historic home.  Upper two floors are mini-museum. There are a few tables in the home's original dining room but most are in what looks like an addition - try for seating in the dining room to get the full feel.  Walk around the grounds, riverbank, and neighborhood afterwards.  Just a real lazy, old world feel to the whole place. There was an outdoor seating area but it was hotter than the house of hades so we opted to sit indoors.

Bitesize blueberry muffins they bring to the table standout.  The breakfast tacos were also really good - but basically just breakfast in a tortilla.  So, don't get crazy.  Wifey had the biscuits and gravy which was good but overwhelming - the biscuts were each the size of her head and they served two.  Coffee was tasty - but they really need to walk around with refills.  $2 for one cup of coffee and no refill is redonkulous!

I think this place is over-rated. I was highly disappointed with my meal.

My friends and I decided to meet in San Antonio. I flew from the East while two of my other friends flew from the West. Before ending our lovely trip, we decided to have breakfast at Guenther. The place was quaint. It was an experience to have a breakfast in historic house but the food was just average.

I had Buttermilk Biscuits & Country Sausage Gravy. Sausage was integrated with gravy. It was too saucy for me. I would have liked to have more sausage with the sauce. The taste was insipid. I wasn't impressed. As for the biscuits, it's something I wasn't used to. It was big and it tasted more like bread. It was doughy. One of my friends, had breakfast tacos. I am not sure why she didn't finish her meal. It was basically an omelette wrap. I guess she wasn't impressed either. Meanwhile, my other friend ordered wheat pancake. The pancakes looked fluffy but I don't think my friend thought much about the dish. I would NOT go back there again. At the end, there was a regret of not having to have gone to Magnolia Pancake Haus.

Visited Guenther House while I was in San Antonio this summer for an early morning breakfast get together with a boss. We were the first ones here so I had a little time to look around the house before sitting down for breakfast. The history behind the house is a nice touch, and it's located in a beautiful part of town. Very quiet, clean, and scenic.

The restaurant portion is in the lower half of the house, and it gets packed pretty quickly (even at 7 in the morning). Food was great, and the service was awesome, too. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone stopping by town wanting some good breakfast!

Breakfast served all day! Which I usually love, but this time... not so much.

It didn't seem overly obviously where the front door was... if there was a "front door" at all, so we came in from the top floor, looked at the memorabilia, the store, and then came down the stairs into the restaurant.

Maybe the staff was having an off day, but they didn't seem very friendly. It took a while for our server to take our drink orders, bring the drinks, and then take our orders. When the food eventually came, the lettuce in my mother's sandwich had dirt on it! Literally, there were globs of dirt and grit on her lettuce in her sandwich. Needless to say that after biting into that mess, she had lost her appetite. We attempted to flag down a staff member, but they all seemed to be ignoring us, so my father got up and went over to the register where 3 employees were chatting. One  of them eventually came over and took my mother's sandwich offering to replace he. He brought a new sandwich back sans lettuce, but also sans any sort've condiments so it was dry as a desert. We eventually got someone to bring us mayonnaise, but not without another long wait.

When it came time to ask for the check, guess what... right! no one was around again. Eventually our original waiter brought over the check and said that his manager took off my mother's sandwich, which honestly was the LEAST they could do in my opinion. The rest of the food was mediocre. My father had some of their in-house made tortillas with his meal and they were average at best, but not worth the hassle.

Needless to say, if I ever find myself in San Antonio again, I most certainly will not be back.

What were two people under the age of 35 doing at Guenther House, a brunch spot in the beautiful King William District that appeals mostly to moms and grandmas?  Well, besides the fact that I often say I am an old person in training--a fact confirmed by my love of knitting, jigsaw puzzles, Werther's Originals and distrust-slash-fear of anything made after 1963--my love for Guenther House can be summed up in four words.  Those four words?

    SOUTHERN SWEET CREAM WAFFLE

Really, this is all you need to lure you into the Guenther House's antiquated, musty clutches.  It is the most divine breakfast food I have ever eaten, and growing up in my family with its nearly-annual trip to San Antonio, ordering this dish was a no-brainer.  So when I returned as a real life grown up with my BF, I decided this would be our last stop on the trip.  We walked up to the hostess stand ready to receive this blessed gift from the gods.

Walk up.  "Hi," I say to the guy behind the hostess stand.  Receive a dirty look in return and walks off.  Oops, just a patron creepin' a peek at the books.  Actual hostess walks up.  "Hi!" I repeat.  "Two, please."

    "Inside or outside?"

    "Doesn't matter."

And then: "I do have to warn you that we have a 1.75-2hr wait right now."

Cue "soul crushing disappointment".  I was already too shaky-hungry to wait that long for sweet, sweet cream.

HOWEVER--I did not leave emptyhanded.  Upstairs there is a gift shop that sells the divine Sweet Cream Waffle mixture, so I was able to obtain The Precious after all, even though it was not immediate.  The gift shop also includes a variety of fun kitchen gadgets and pretty linens if you're in the market for that sort of thing.  I have asked in the past why they don't ship out the mix to the stores, and apparently it spoils quickly so they recommend you store it in your freezer.

I basically want to live in the house, which used to be home to the folks who started the Pioneer Mills.  The parlor is preserved in its elaborate Edwardian glory and I informed my BF that this is what I'd like our living room to look like eventually (told you about that grandma thing).  Add in the fact that the main dining room is painted my very favorite color in the world and it's a wonder I didn't melt into a little puddle on the floor.

Heed our mistake.  Go early, or with plenty of time to spare--but really, the point is "GO".

This restaurant is within the historic Guenther home which was built in 1859 next to the Pioneer Flour Mill.   There is a good chance you will have a wait to be seated so I suggest taking a stroll around the property and inside the home.  It appears they kept much of the furniture and decor in it's original condition.

We were told we would wait 45 minutes at around 1:00 pm on a Sunday but it ended up being only about a 25 minute wait.

The rolls and biscuits were very good but the sweat cream waffles were even better and contrasted well with their smoked bacon. If you are too full for pastry, then get some to go as we did. The coffee cake and pecan streusal were so good. They were too big to eat all at once later that day and were even still very good two days later.

There is a reason when you go to the Guenther House to get there before 9am, there's an hour wait. All the yelpers say to go before 9, and even during the week, it was still an hour wait.

If you decide to wait, go into their cafe to get a coffee and danish. They offer multiple flavor danishes, which are perfect for that hour wait while you sit outside on their quaint tables and grounds.  When you're seated, you can choose to sit inside or outside in their covered tent. Outside was so pleasant.

We started with the black cherry strudel. I'm not sure if they make these inhouse, but whom ever made it, it made two very waiting hungry people happy until the table was ready. I moved onto another wonderful carb filled breakfast, one of their specials, almond pancakes. They were wonderfully sized, browned well, and cake with a delightful surprise of thinly sliced almonds cooked in the batter as well as in between each pancake within the stack. The almonds gave it a nice addition to the texture of the syrup soaked pancakes.

They also offer freshly squeezed orange juice that comes with delicious pulp floating in it.  Enjoy!

This place is all atmosphere.  The food is fine but nothing to write home about.  The service is friendly and they are quite efficient at moving people around.  The place can be a zoo of people as we had a 30 minute wait.  We had pancakes which were ok.  The biscuits and gravy is good.  The prices we fine and the out door seating seemed like the real treat if the weather is nice.

I came here a few weeks ago. The day before mothers day. I love breakfast and had read good reviews on yelp. I got there around 9:45. It was 2 of us. We waited around 45 minutes which is a long time. However from the begging they told us the wait was actually an hour and a half!! yikes! Either we decided to stay. Maybe it was extra busy because mothers day was next day ??

Let me start by saying the Guenther House is so beautiful... They had coffee for everyone waiting. The coffee was delicious! They have lots of benches, and small tables and chairs for the people waiting. It was nice and time actually went by pretty quickly. We sat at a bench over looking the river... I enjoyed that view with my coffee. We also got to walk around in the house and they have a small store upstairs.

We sat outside. It was a nice day and they also had a man playing the harp which was a really nice touch. They brought out some bread & pastries while we waited for our food. REALLY good & sooo fresh

I had the strawberry waffles. They came with applewood smoked bacon ! OMG delicous!! I can have these again & again :)

My boyfriend had the buttermilk biscuits & country sausage gravy. He also had the option for preserves. He chose the jalapeno preserves! To die for! Perfect combination or sweet & spicy. You can quickly taste how fresh the biscuits were. Gravy was also really good!

I definitely recommend this place & I cant wait until I go back

I almost wish there was a six-star option for the Guenther House Restaurant.  The entire experience is simply terrific and not to be missed if you visit or live in San Antonio.

The Guenther House is the 1860 (with additions in the 1910s) home of the family that founded the Pioneer mill adjacent to the Guenther Home.  The place has been restored and now serves as the restaurant, a museum and a store.

The breakfast menu is heavy on carbs and light on protein since it features Pioneer products.  My wife had biscuits and gravy that were delicious.  I enjoyed breakfast tacos, and while the meal was tasty (and the tortillas were amazing), I think I'd go with something else next time.  My brother had the waffle and said it was the finest he'd ever had--it was melt-in-your-mouth goodness.

The restaurant is more than just a place to eat.  The history is evident around every corner, plus it's a terrific San Antonio experience.  Located on the new portion of the riverwalk in King William, you can enjoy a coffee and stroll the grounds while waiting for your turn in the restaurant.  Many people choose to eat outside in the wonderful arbor, but we ate in a stately, paneled  room in part of the original home.  It was a terrific breakfast worth repeating!

My husband and I arrived well before our party of 21, and after we toured the house (beautiful) we were sitting outside waiting when the hostess asked if we would like coffee while we waited. She brought out the best coffee I have ever had, complete with fresh cream to drink while we waited...for free.
They do not take reservations, but were able to fit all of us in pretty quickly. Our waitress was upbeat and kind, which can't be hard to do with such a large party.
I ordered the breakfast tacos with eggs, cheese and potatoes. It came with a side of fresh fruit, which was so fresh and delicious, and in an ample amount.
The wait for our food was a bit long, but that probably had to do with the number of our party.
Even if you don't go for breakfast or dinner, the house is interesting and historic. There is a gift shop as well but it was a bit pricy (I did score some interesting tea, though). I would love to go back the next time we are in town to try something different.

I loved, loved, loved this place! Large portions for cheap!! Great decor, especially for the ladies. It was beside a (frozen food?) plant, but I couldn't notice it from where I was sitting.

I was walking around the King William historic district one evening when I bumped into another visitor from Minnesota. He had just dined at the Guenther House Restaurant earlier in the day and highly recommended it for lunch, so I decided to visit the following day to see what the fuss was all about.

After a bit of trouble finding the entrance (Enter on S. Alamo St across from the Blue Star building or according to Google, approx. 1418 S. Alamo St), we were finally seated in a shaded outdoor patio.

We were started off each with a small blueberry muffin (not to sweet!) and a bread roll. We ordered 3 sandwich-soup combos; 2 cream of potato soup with chicken salad sandwich and 1 cream of potato soup with club sandwich. Each combo was $8.75 and came with pickle and chips. The soup came in a large bowl and was the perfect consistency. The sandwiches were also very well sized and tasty, and I was plenty full when I was finished.

Service could have been a little faster (they forgot our straws twice), but the atmosphere was very laid back. It made you want to sit back and enjoy a nice, relaxing, long lunch, so no stars taken off. Highly recommend this place!

The quality of food is amazing here, the pastries are to die for, the service is excellent and the price for a meal is reasonable for anybody. After saying all that, how could you turn down an opportunity to have brunch at this place. Surprisingly, I was that person. I lived in San Antonio my whole life and I had never been here. Maybe it's because I wasn't a brunch person back then. Well breakfast is back. Get there early in spring/summer and enjoy a nice relaxing meal outside along the river and in the  "shadow" of the mill that's directly behind.

Okay enough of the sentimental: So what should you get??? Well that's all on you but if you love fluffy biscuits then you have to get them here. It's practically half a loaf a bread and  they are mouth watering. Pancakes equally delicious.

As a bonus to your meal you can drive/walk around the King William District and look at all the amazing houses. They also have tours of the house as well.

P.S. Don't get turned around, Then entrance is right across from the Blue Star Brewery.

What a nice place. But how hard it is to find! We drove around twice before finding a sign that was directing to the parking lot, and even then we didn't know where exactly should we go. It was like a treasure hunt, which actually made it more rewarding at the end.
It is very sweet and wonderful place. Right on the river and has a beautiful old patio, so we had a chance to eat outside. Even though it is located right underneath the Mill tower - it does not affect a bit the serenity and prettiness of the place.
And what a nice menu. I had a breakfast platter with the signature Guenther Mill's biscuits. Real good!
And - after brunch- be sure to walk around the neighborhood! The King William's area is full of history and gorgeous houses!

The Guenther house was a pretty good place to eat if you ware with adult family (LONG waiting time, not good for hungry kids) and enjoy southern (heavy) meals.
The BF and I went here for brunch (10:15am), went through the maze to get to the hostess' stand (**just cut around the outside of the house to the "back yard" to get to her**) and waited an hour and a half to be seated. The grounds are lovely, (fairly hot of course) and the river runs fairly close to the house.

The house coffee was delicious with a hint of hazelnut(?).

On yelper's suggestions, i got the Southern Sweet Cream Waffle. It was sweet, and i could taste the cream baked in, but the description in the menu was a "light" waffle. It was not. It was also kind of boring compared to the strawberry waffle and banana waffle I saw being served.

BF had the biscuits and gravy, which were pretty good but also heavy as heck, in keeping with southern-style.

I also DO NOT suggest getting the sausage patties, they were fairly dry and crumbly without much taste, but the side of breakfast potatoes we also ordered were pretty good.

Basically, we felt this was kind of a nicer version of Cracker Barrel, including the convenient, on-grounds gift shop guests are suggested to wait in.

Try the sweet cream waffle, it's delicious.

Yes, this is the same company that makes the Pioneer Brand Buttermilk Pancake Mix at the grocery stores. Unfortunately, I haven't eaten at the restaurant because the wait time was 1 and a half hours on a Sunday morning so I decided to take the food to go and eat it at my hotel. I ordered the sweet cream waffle, 1 egg, an order of sausage, 1 biscuit, and 1 coffee cake. Their biscuits are huge! nothing special and they charge 1.25 for their jams....lame! Their sweet cream waffle is soooo gooooood. The coffee cake was dry.

I think Sunday mornings are their busiest mornings so try to go on Saturday morning and their wait time will probably in the range of 20-30 mins. While you wait, you can sit down and drink free coffee.

We had a decent breakfast here, but the interesting location and adequate food wasn't worth the hour wait. I had the biscuits with gravy and preserves, K had the waffle with strawberries. The baked goods were the highlights and were very fresh and tasty, and the service was good as well. The waffles, however, came with canned whipped cream... why would you do that to your signature waffles? The main (only) reason to come is for the atmosphere of the old restored building and surrounding grounds, which are charming indeed. But on the second visit it'll get old, and the food itself isn't anything special to come back for, and certainly not worth the long wait times on the weekends.

Truly a gem! Whether you are a local or a tourist, this is a terrific spot for breakfast or lunch. Food is served quickly and, wow, is it ever delicious. Fresh fruit is truly fresh and their biscuits and sausage gravy are rib stickin' goodness. Have no idea what magic they put in those pancakes but they are exquisite. The museum, history and gift shop add to the experience and give diners something to do while waiting for a table or walking off an incredible meal.

Breakfast at the Guenther house is just one of those quintessential San Antonio things.  When the weather is nice, it just doesn't get much better than this for outdoor dining in our lovely city.  They have the BEST mile high biscuits.  Order them with the jam of your choice, but avoid the gravy, it's just so-so.  Or go for the sweet cream waffle.  Either way, get bacon on the side.  Honestly, some of the best bacon I have ever had.  I give 4 stars for the food, five for setting and location, but I always base my reviews on the food.  I have one suggestion / disappointment and that is the coffee.  It's REALLY bad!!!  Make some good coffee, please, to go with my yummy breakfast!!!!  After you eat, enjoy a stroll along the neck of the river that isn't crowded.

This morning, I went to The Guenther House. Parking was easy, "No thanks to Sprint navigation."

Customers have the option of eating in or outside, "I prefer inside, but that's just me." Our waiter was a nice and nice looking, "Like an underwear model."

The drink order came first as usual, a coffee for mom, orange juice for baby, cranberry juice for my sister, and a water for me. They were all good but the orange juice had a lot of pulp, "Here's to the pulp lovers."

We ordered two southern sweet crème waffles, Pioneer buttermilk pancakes, and buttermilk biscuits and country sausage gravy. These dishes are all great but then we started adding eggs, apple wood smoked bacon, and country sausage patties.

The waffles were the best part of breakfast, "So good," they were super soft and sweet with a slice of an orange garnish. The pancakes are okay but I loved the waffles. I'm really picky when it comes to my eggs, so I explained how I like them and they were immaculate. The bacon was great, I don't like biscuit but with gravy but they would be good for those who do. The sausage patties are not good, "Do not order the patties, (dry) waste of $2.50."

The gift shop and restroom are located on the second floor along a with a beautiful room called The Parlor.

The total, $50.98 not including the tip. I would definitely go back, the food and service were excellent.

Solid breakfast but nothing to write home about. I've had much better breakfasts in California and other areas in Texas, so it is hard to give this place anything above 3 stars. The servers are quite nice, and the location is quite relaxing. Food is unmemorable, however.

What a neat place.  We were staying downtown and the place was in our guidebook.  We decided to walk there for lunch.   It's about a 3/4 mile walk.  We took the riverwalk.  We were on the east side and almost missed it.  If you do walk it from downtown, walk on the west side of the river.  Coming home, we walked down King William to St. Marys and saw many of the old mansions.

The food was good and our server was nice.  We were glad we went.

I went here for a presentation hosted by Google, and man on man was I impressed.  I love going to places that have a history and some sort of character to them.  The Guenther is a mix between museum, cafe, and home. It's just the most precious venue.  I appreciate any place that uses the real thick bacon, and the coffee was superb ... I took a little walk by the river afterwards to talk off some ideas, but it was a great start to a lovely day.

Portions are small, food is uninteresting, I have no idea why folks like it here.

We ordered to go-since the wait was an hour and a half. Ordering food to go took about 20 minutes. Once we received our food we sat outside at a table that are used for guests to wait.  I had the sausage and biscuits which were a good size but just ok. Frederic ordered the eggs benedict which were AMAZING!

Great tourist spot: beautiful old home on grounds of the mill. Breakfast was fair; noisy room with very rushed service, but the food was good enough. Not spectacular.

I recently had breakfast at the Guenther House during a recent trip to San Antonio and thought it was DEEEEELICIOUS!!!

I was with colleagues and clients so I opted for something small...the Southern Sweet Cream Waffle (or something along those lines).  WHOA!!!  I totally fell into my own world for the 5-7minutes it took me to eat every morsel of this little piece of heaven.  I have no idea if anyone spoke to me during this time frame or not...all I know is that was an awesome waffle!!!

I was kicking myself after I finished my waffle for not ordering 2 of those or maybe trying a side or two!!!

We were here on a Monday morning for breakfast so there was barely anyone in the restaurant, but I had heard from other colleagues who had ventured here during the weekend that the line was INSANE!!!  I fully understand why!!!

This place is also a cute little slice of history.  You can walk around the upstairs portion of the house and buy some souvenirs or just view the historic pictures and stories.

If I ever find myself back in San Antonio, I will definitely be returning to the Guenther House Restaurant!!!

What a fabulous find, but wow, it is hard to find!

As others have pointed out, this is a combo restaurant in an old house that also serves as a museum and gift shop. There are grounds to stroll. Overall, the experience is quite welcoming and unique.

But be forewarned: the restaurant is hard to find. We followed some people into the "main entrance." From there, you enter the museum. But there are no signs as to where the restaurant is located. You wander a few floors of the museum, see the gift shop, and still don't see the restaurant. We were about to give up when I heard some people being called to their table. So we followed them to find the restaurant! Not only is the restaurant on the first floor (basement) but the check in is outside on the grounds!! How is one to know? (Once I became a "veteran" I directed several other parties to the correct location as we waited for our table. But once you get it figured out, wow, what incredible food.

I had the platter--two huge biscuits, with homemade jam and gravy with sausage on the side, fruit, and applewood smoked bacon, very high quality. The wife had the sweet cream waffle. Both hers and mine were off the chart good. The biscuits and waffle were so fresh, light, and fluffy. I am not a big biscuit and gravy fan but it was just incredible. We threw in a side of seasoned potatoes and we were in heaven and very full until the evening. The food is just outstanding, and the atmosphere is sublime.

We did not buy anything at the gift shop but it was fun to look. They sell several of the mixes for pancakes and waffles that appear on the menu (in the basement).

We definitely would return and this was one of the highlights of our Christmas vacation to San Antonio!

With amazingly fresh baked goods and a historic and warm setting, the Guenther House is an ideal breakfast or lunch spot.  One can easily be torn between sitting outside surrounded by the river and lush gardens or sitting inside and enjoying the perfectly restored former Guenther family home.

I have enjoyed the *Corn Chowder, a Portabella Mushroom Salad and a Vegetable Sandwich along with an array of baked breads and muffins.

The store is stocked with cute kitchen items, cookbooks and local Texas treats including jams and sauces.

I have worked with their staff too many times to count to host luncheons for work.  I am continually impressed by their demeanor and professional attitude.

Most recently I went to the GH with my husband and another couple for Sunday morning brunch.  We arrived at 10:15am and left just before 1pm, so if you are going for brunch plan on sitting back, enjoying the complimentary coffee and perhaps taking some time to read the historical markers.

*Note that this is a different recipe than online as there are dietary requirements for my groups.  No bacon or chicken cubes used.

    Gorgeous estate.
    Mediocre food.
Tourist trap but still worth the wait if you can sit outside.  Just order Guenther flour products.  :)

The only bad thing about the Guenther house is that it's no longer a well kept secret. I've been coming here for years and the atmosphere and food has never wavered in quality.
Hidden away along side the river walk in the King William District, it is easy to miss the entrance. It's quaint but well secluded, so look for the Pioneer Flour Mill to find the entrance. Once found, It's worth the wait for a table. Transformed into a restaurant, the historic home is now somewhat of a museum and has a shop on the second floor.
The baked goods made with the Pioneer Flour Mill products are delicious! My favorite plate is the light, fluffy, sweet waffles with strawberries.
A great place to spend a morning and a nice change from the breakfast tacos you can get just about anywhere in San Antonio.
