Whoever Dave N is...  doesn't know what he is talking about.  I am in town from PA, in town on business and found a great hometown bar.  The crowd may not be the cream of the crop, but they are solid, Americans!  Drinks are cheap even by Pa prices.  Service is stellar.  Pete is one of the best bartenders I have ever had and pours a mean drink.

Matthew C.:  this bar gets a very mixed crowd stop being racist.  I am tired of it.  This bar gets Asian, Latino, Black and White. Stop your feaking whining.

I think this is going to be the toughest review I have written since I totally changed my position on this place during the course of my visit. It went from hate to love in a little over an hour.

First hour- My first impression was that this place is bizarro Cheers where everyone knows your name and what number to call after you pass out. First off there is no sign up front and you don't know if this is an abandoned building or a functioning establishment. There were a couple of folks up front who were smoking and being really loud. I would not have gone in if I was with a lady friend but decided to give it a try since I was out with a guy buddy of mine.  I wonder why the smokers bothered going out since there folks who were smoking inside!  Now that's a sight I have not seen in a really really long time. There were 2 types of patrons. One set who were sitting at the bar and seemed to know each other really well. They were the ones smoking. The second set was college kids with their baseball caps backwards. More observations... It looked like they had not unpacked since there were tables with random stuff on it like plastic flowers. They had TVs which were like 25 years old. The jukebox had Bob Marley, Metallica and Beyonce. There had 1 pool table.  The only food item they had were chips. I half expected to get into a fight with someone who was drunk and was looking for trouble.

Second hour - This place slowly but surely crept up on me. First off the drinks are cheap!  A glass of scotch for 5 bucks. I am used to paying a lot more, so that was a nice surprise. The bar tender, Cindy, was very cool and sweet.  I realized that this place was totally unpretentious ( I was there in shorts and felt totally at home) and a good place to just relax, chat with some friends and get some drinks. This place has a rough exterior but a heart of gold.  I am going back.

Pretty decent dive, great prices on drinks and draft beers, under the current market prices.  $3.50 for a premium pint and a little less for domestics.  I'm actually getting real used to the $5 pints, so after seeing my change here, it kinda caught me by surprise.

The crowd is what you make of it, after work crowd earlier in the evenings and local younger peeps in the later hours.  It isn't the kind of place you really wanna be seen at, which is exactly why I chill here every now and then.  Actually, my cell phone reception is quite limited here (kinda like a cave), so when I'm here, I literally have disappeared, which sometimes is a very good thing!

Old school CD jukebox which is nice and cheap, like 9 songs for 2 bucks, as opposed to those Touch Tune jukes which will cost you a 5 spot for the same amount of songs.  Plus the peeps here like to mix the songs up a bit, making it a more eclectic music experience.  On my last beer outing here I heard The Temptations, to Journey, to Prince, to Bob Marley then to No Doubt.  As varied as that may seem to be, it sounded like my friggin' MP3 player.

Cold beer, cool company and tunes for the jukebox...9 dollars.

Zero reception on my cell phone whilst enjoying my cold beer, cool company and tunes on the jukebox...priceless.

Not really sure why people have given this place a negative review.. Seriously guys, this is a DIVE BAR.  Not your downtown San Jose club.  I love the dingy, old school, secluded feel of this bar.  And the juke box ain't that bad either.  It's a little off sometimes but I've been to other divey bars that have weaker selection of music.  People need to learn how to differentiate the Dive Bars from the BJ's Brewhouse happy hour crowd.  People seriously is expecting too much out of these places..

Anyway, I love this place because it's seriously like 1 minute away from my house and the bartender, Pete, is really cool.  The regulars are really friendly and I always have a good time here.  It's a great place to go if you want a chill place to drink at.  Very friendly crowd here...

I wanted to like Gubera's.  I really did.  The idea of a tucked-away dive bar in suburban Newark is appealing, especially since it's one of just a few bars in the whole town.

I saddled up to the bar after entering through the side entrance.  You know-- the one right by the corner of the bar with a sign overhead indicating "Asshole Corner".  No, seriously, there is a sign that says that.  Obviously the corner of the bar for the regulars.  Cool wit dat.

Inside, it has a good sized bar with a decor that, like any good dive, shields its denizens from daylight during the day.  So far so good.

But when I sat down to order a well drink, I got a lot of ice and not a lot of booze in it.  It was at a time that is technically happy hour anywhere else, and the price wasn't even especially that happy.  I decided to order another round to see if the first was a fluke.  Nope.  Just as watery.   I actually ended up ordering a bud light on draft after that.  If the drinks are watery and you're stuck there for awhile, go with beer.  It's harder to get wrong.

A dive bar with watery drinks is not really a dive-bar anymore.  I wondered if all the other patrons were just pretending to be drunk and having a good time.

Oh, and at one point there was a guy sitting next to me smoking at the bar.  Nothing necessarily wrong with that, but it does indicate that this bar must've been operated by the owner at the time to be exempt from the CA no-smoking law.

This "dive bar" is exactly whatever you make of it. I've been seeing my neighbor's car infront of this place ever since I was learning how to ride my bike (6 years old?)! I've stopped by this bar a couple times randomly, and I have bumped into my neighbor here! Each time coming here, you never know who you'll bump into or meet. Drink prices are good, can't complain about the service, and the location is easy to find. Great place to hang out if you want to just kick back and enjoy an ice cold beer!

I love it here. Yea, it's small and not all that exciting to look at. I didn't even know it existed until my bf  introduced me to it since he always goes there with his coworkers. But I feel really comfortable there and have always had good experiences. My bf and I go here kind of a lot. I'd say we go here about once a week, haha. Anytime we want to just chill and have a drink, we go here. The bartenders are nice, too. Pete's our fav! =D

Young bartenders tend to a middle-aged crowd of men. There is a sign outside that says "Men at work," but in the middle of the day, it becomes a pleasant irony. With an entryway clouded in smoke, the bar has a pool table and an awkward spaciousness. I actually did come here one night and there was about 8 people, 4 locals sitting at the bar, and us four Asians and it just was well... awkward. I think it would be a sight to see this place poppin'. Anyway, small bar, with no special attitude, and no credit-worthiness of being deemed one of the local watering holes. It is more dead than uplifting. Sorry. -Matt
