I just discovered one of the most yummiest seafood soups in town. So yummy! Mussels, Clams, Scallops, Salmon..in cilantro broth with onions and tomato's. OMG,
my taste buds had a party!
I am so going again.
Parking is tough to find. seating is tricky. try to sit close to the view if your indoors or sit outside :) -

Ugh!! And double Ugh! My company has had many group functions at Guaymas for over 15 years. The food fabulous; the drinks stellar; the service spot-on.
However, on a recent company group outing to the restaurant, I was absolutely appalled. The menu has completely changed. Gone are the unique and savory entrees and appetizers. They have now been substituted with very pedestrian boring dishes that are ill-conceived and ill-prepared. I had the seafood brochettes and the fish was dried out and tasteless. Others in our group were also disappointed with their dishes -- the chicken mole, the chili relleno, the seafood fajitas -- all lackluster and no depth. Everything was flat. Even my expensive margarita tasted watered down.
But the most horrific experience was the service. Poor timing of serving the group and the drinks took FOREVER to arrive. Forget about asking for a second round. It was a Monday evening with hardly anyone in the place and they screw up the timing? The topper was the server asking us after all our plates were cleared, "Is there any thing else you would like? Dessert? Or do you want to get the hell out of here...?" I couldn't believe (nor did my colleagues) what he said. Absolutely stunned. Ummmm... I guess we'll leave, leave for good!
Guayams has turned into an expensive tourist trap for those who don't know any better. The one star is for the spectacular view, but that's it! -
Review from Greg G.
Great in 1987 when I first tried it, still great today.
This place has one of the best views of any Mexican restaurant that I have ever been to and has top notch cuisine to match. In case you have not been there, on a clear, un foggy day, there is an excellent view of San Francisco, far better than what you see from Sausalito. The restaurant scene in the Bay Area is fiercely competitive and this place has managed to survive for more than a quarter of a century so they must be doing something right. We had the grilled chicken with a nicely spiced peanut sauce and the chili relleno. Both dishes were perfectly prepared and came out very hot and were also served with nice fresh tortillas. They still have all of the dishes that I remember them for and the food is excellent. If you're in the mood for some good Latin food, this is the place in Marin. It's just so damn good, still after all of these years. I guess that's how a place becomes an institution!! -

Perfect location on the waterfront in Tiburon. The guacamole here was just okay, but hey, I will trade in mediocre fresh made guacamole for a great view any day of the week. The carnitas were tasty with just a hint of lime and easily separated without the need to pull out my knife. Portion was actually too much to take down in one sitting (which is a good thing). The only strange thing about Guaymas was that on a beautiful sunny day sitting out on the patio, they had the heat lamp on which made it feel like I was in 90 degree weather. It took a little while for our group to figure this out, but we were able to to get the heat lamps turned off and enjoyed our beers celebrating Cinco de Mayo.

The service is so slow at this place, my bf had to get up and get water. The drinks that we got where pretty good though. He got the Pomegranate drink and I got the sangria which where both really good. We also got two oysters that where really good, and way better then whatever oysters they had at Sam's club.

What has happened to this place?!?
We used to like the food, drinks and service. Tonight the food was mediocre and far too salty (especially rice and beans). The drinks were fine (especially margaritas without sweet and sour.)
And the service? Abysmal. Really long waits for the drinks. Mitchell, from the bar, was downright rude, didn't come back with the check (despite his telling us that we would have to cash out with him and a fairly long wait for a table in a nearly empty restaurant) and then he chased us over to our table where we told him that I finally went to the bar and paid.
Then at our table we waited even longer for drinks. And the guacamole. We had to ask twice for each. And for a water without ice. A later beer took as long if not longer. telling us that we would have to cash out with him). The rest of the food came pretty promptly and the order was correct.
This was the emptiest we've ever seen this place. It used to be a favorite of ours, especially with the kids, but we truly doubt we'll ever be back. -

When I see this place I just know I'm gonna be in trouble. Guaymas puts a spell on me that says I should sit outside by the marina, eat good Mexican type food and start imbibing all that tequila and the drinks made with it.
Falling asleep in the sun afterward is possible but that's why I have friends to make sure I can stumble out.
I like the food enough not to just suck up the drinks but sometimes I'm helpless. -
Review from May D.
I looked up Mexican restaurants after my day long retreat in Tiburon and only two restaurants popped up. We had a reservation at Guaymas and like the yelper that I am, I decided to check out the reviews AND quite frankly, this establishment had better ones! Here's the low down:
VIEW:
I was fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the beautifully lit skyline before the fog and heavy rain rolled in. The view is breathtaking in and out of itself and can be seen from all angles of the restaurant. Guaymas is also easily accessible by ferry as the boarding dock is adjacent to it. This restaurant would be a great place to take your visiting friends and relatives!
BAR & HAPPY HOUR:
My first stop after a long day was at the bar. They have a great happy hour with $4 sangrias and $5 margaritas . The sangria, both white and red, were absolutely delicious and sweetened to perfection. Seriously, the sangria would make you want to yell "Uno mas!" to the bartender!
FOOD:
For appetizers we were given a selection of dips and guagamole paired with chips. The guacamole was nicely seasoned with a nice kick of lime. We were served a buffet dinner of shrimp and chicken fajitas. The shrimp had a hint of spice that creeped up on you, but other than that the food was good. Everything was nicely seasoned and flavorful.
DESSERT:
Churros with vanilla ice cream. Now whoever made this combo is an ultimate genius! I highly recommend this. The churro has a nice crunch and is coated with a good blend of cinnamon and sugar and pairs well with the homemade tasting vanilla ice cream. -

There are far, far worse hours you can spend than those lounging on the sunny deck of Guaymas, right on the water, drinking fresh-lime margaritas and dunking chips into three appealing house-made salsas. The long menu offers lots of tasty tidbits that go with drinks such as: Don Cacahuate - Two marinated grilled chicken breasts topped with a spicy peanut Serrano chile sauce, Pescado Veracruzana -Line caught, fresh catch-of-the-day with roasted jalapeno polenta cake drizzled with veracruzana sauce and Chipotle Glazed Prawns - Grilled prawns glazed in homemade smoky chipotle sauce, served with fresh guacamole...just to name a few. Whether seated at the bar, patio or dinning room, the service you receive is fantastic!

Simply a terrible experience. Service was horrible and slow. Our order was incorrect, the hostess couldn't manage getting us seated. The place is a mess, and the staff seems to not give a darn about anything.
Previously Guaymas had the feeling of a welcoming place, where everyone was friendly and the staff enjoyed each customer. But no more.
I've been visiting this restaurant for 20 years. This will be our last visit. The new owners have ruined the restaurant, but I'm sure they don't care much because food is now an afterthought, and alcohol service seems to be their primary interest.
Goodbye Guaymas. -

After completing a 12K run on Angel Island a group of 8 of us ravenously entered Guayamas for some much needed post-run nourishment. We immediately ordered a round of drinks ranging from bottled beer to margaritas to bloody maries. I personally had a bloody, spicy, and it was perfect. The people with the margaritas said they were good.
Obviously one of the biggest perks to this restaurant is the location - right on the water, mere steps from the ferry. We sat outside in the sunshine which was perfect. Of course there were gulls and pigeons assisting with cleaning up abandoned tables, but nothing too intrusive.
Our food:
- calamari: lightly breaded, nice dipping sauce, nothing fantastic but did the trick
- chips & guac: Yummy; was devoured quickly
- oysters w/jalpeno infused dipping sauce: perfect! The oysters tasted fresh, the sauce was enjoyable. YUM.
- carnitas: I was really hoping a place like this would know how to do carnitas right - but I was disappointed here. It was dry, boring flavor. Good thing I split this plate w/my husband. The black beans and rice were good and the housemade tortillas saved us.
Service:
Speedy, friendly, just right.
Overall I'd say we had a good experience here and I would go here again - although we don't frequent Tiburon often so we would probably venture around to some of the other local restaurants in the future. -

What happened to this place? Adios, Guaymas! The place was nearly empty and there were plenty of waiters. We sat and sat and sat, as did other guests, and only a few got service. We would have waited longer until we spotted the gulls and pigeons descending by the dozens on the outdoor tables, scavenging for leftovers. The bad part was that the bus staff shooed them away and took the chip baskets and other items right back into the bins inside. So unhealthy. A pigeon was literally inside the basket, feet, feathers and all, and they put it right back into the bin to use for the next customer's chips. Not me. We left and we won't be back.

First off good food and margaritas after a long day hiking Angel Island. However, their SERVICE IS THE WORST I'VE EVER HAD! If you get the slightly overweight middle aged male waiter with a long gray pony tail, just pick up your belongings and leave. The place was nowhere near full. We were seated immediately and promptly were given chips and salsa (off to a good start). 15 min later after being ignored by the wait staff our waiter finally came over and apologized for the bad service. We ordered water and margaritas... 10 min later they arrived with another apology. We ordered... another 15 or so min pass and the food shows up (understandable). Then no offers for more water or drinks through out the entire meal! We finish and give the international sign for "I'm done" by placing our napkins on our now clean plates. 15 min later... bingo, our waiter shows up after doing nothing in the corner for a good 10 min while we could clearly see him. First time me or my girlfriend have ever left a $5 tip for a $60 bill. Not going back.

I couldn't agree more with Annie B. - don't come expecting amazing, groundbreaking food. It's okay, and there are some good picks.
But who needs food when you have a great selection of beer and cocktails and an AWESOME view of the city. Especially when you have time to kill before/after a commute from the city. It definitely could be worse.
I was meeting a friend there for drinks (low expectations are often exceeded!) and it was just a perfect place with the ferry right there and the view.
As for service, again, I had low expectations: I was there to catch up, hangout and chat. Definitely what I would consider a low maintenance table in the grand scheme of things. Our server was actually the Bartender, and he was great, and super friendly. He could have easily ignored us sitting there, but he was sure to check in just the right amount to make sure we were never on empty. Great guy! Again, going above and beyond! :)
We did order chips and salsa and the happy hour tacos. They really were not terrible, they were worth the calories to some extent. But they were also on happy hour, so I felt the price was commiserate with the taste. I would recommend their happy hour for sure - they have a good variety and good prices.
As many have already mentioned: the view is the real reason to stop in. And you can't really mess up a margarita. Go for it! -

Sipping a Crushed Grape Margarita on the patio while taking in the view of the city and Golden Gate Bridge ... Awesome!

5 stars for the view and our server Eric but 3 stars for the food.
You really don't come here expecting to be wowed by the food, you come here for the view. I have heard from our other friends who have been here that the service can be slow but we got lucky and our server Eric was attentive and knowledgeable and steered towards solid choices on the menu.
We started out with an order of the guac, which was fresh and not overseasoned. I got the prawns and DH got the surf and turf. Both were solid choices. We skipped dessert because none of the choices appealed to us. -

San Ramon, CA
Large establishment and on the water is nice. But the food is just so-so. Service is okay, and if you have a large group this place totally works. Food portions are giant, and they will cater easily to fussy kids.
Ambiance feels suburbian though, and food feels like the American version of Mexican food. Not noteworthy, but if you are hungry and want a water view during dinner, here's your place. -

Went to Guaymas for the first time recently and was very pleasantly surprised. I assumed it would be an overpriced, average, "Mexican" tourist trap with bad food but what it turned out to be was a far above average, well priced, Mexican restaurant with amazing views and even better service. Mitchell was our server and he was great. He was very knowledgable about the menu and super willing to help everyone at my table make their choice. Our margaritas were some of the best I've had in a long time, and for $9 I thought they were well worth every penny. Every single person at my table commented on how good the chips were and everyone was happy with their entree. I was a bit nervous ordering their fish special (not sure it's always the best choice at Mexican restaurant) but it was really good and large enough to share. I will definitely go back.

Pros:
The view is why you go to Guaymas! It's a sunny alternative to Sam's if the latter is too packed or you want to change up the food. The location can't be beat, and if you bicycle over there, it is a perfect destination (sure, you can drive to Tiburon too). If you ask for extra spicy salsa, they'll give it to you, so be careful!
Cons:
Slow service, but most people come here to kill a lot of time!
Fun:
If you can't have fun in Tiburon, then you just can't have fun. -

I was stuck after a no show ferry back to San Francisco at 6:30pm. I had to wait for a taxi so this place seemed the reasonable place to do so. I spent some considerable time being ignored by the bar staff though it wasn't that busy. I mean, really ignored. I then finally asked for their basic margarita, that was $7.50. I was extremely disappointed, it was the worst margarita I've ever had in my life. It was very poorly presented in a simple half glass format as if I was being punished for asking for it outside their specialized margaritas. The appetizer was okay.
Obviously places such as these rely on the appeal of their location and view. Subsequently other things are allowed to slip because they figure people will come regardless of their mediocre food and rather lame service at their bar. They weren't that busy for a Saturday evening so I would imagine others feel the same I do.
I was also revolted they were emptying their large trash bins in a two step process near my and another dinner table. They didn't have any consideration of the diners experience or ambiance viewing themselves as a fast food place would. Why not wait until the dinners left? It was just so obvious how poorly managed the place was. -

I decided to celebrate my birthday dinner here with some friends and family. Well, I wasn't sure based on some reviews how much we would like it. I think we all had a really nice time. Food was good, service was good, view was great...not sure why other Yelper's weren't happy? For me I don't like the parking prices, but the restaurant has nothing to do with that.
The place is super great because you can take the ferry from SF to come here and eat. I ordered the Tamales Plantano and wow it was really good! Pretty sure I'd come back here again when I have a chance. -

San Francisco, CA
I differ with the reviewers who say this is all view, no food. The food is actually pretty good, especially if you stray from the usual. A lot of the dishes are not "typical" Mexican dishes--how many generic taco joints serve ceviche? The skewer-style dishes are also unusual for expat Mexican places. There is actually a selection of different kinds of salsa. I suppose if you order the generic Mexican dishes (burritos, tacos) it might not be inspiring. But that stuff is hard to make inspiring--it's basic fill-up food, no matter how you cut it. Go for the dishes you don't normally see on Mexican menus, and you'll be pleasantly surprised.
The drinks are decent, the service sometimes gets overwhelmed by the crowd but is generally competent.
And of course the location is hard to beat. The only downside is sometimes having to protect your meal from the more brazen seagulls... -

I love the food here. I had the seafood stew...it was the best broth I ever had. Totally blown away by this dish. My friends also enjoyed it very much. We tried a variety of appetizers too and it was soooo good. The wait staff was courteous and quick. I cannot wait to come back.

Glad i chose to stop by this place over the weekend. Ive read the reviews back and forth and I was iffy but I do love a good view so I decided to try it out.
Food was alright, I feel I can cook on par, but then again I cook a lot so probably great for some people that eat out and are Kitchen-tarded.
Our server was Eric, he was courteous, knew everything that a good server should and didnt leave us needed anything. He was great!
In the end id say its worth a stop, just glad I got a decent server, I was worried when i saw the review of slow service. It was enjoyable -

I *really* wanted to like this place since I just moved to Tiburon and it's RIGHT where the ferry drops you off.
The good: The view
The bad: Happy hour deals are only offered inside (no view).
The service is the slowest I've ever experienced. Including in europe. seriously. It took 10 minutes to be seated when the place was EMPTY (it's beyond me why they even have hostesses at this place anyway) and then another 10 to order our drinks, and then another 10 to get them. I guess it was because our drink order was complicated (two blue moons). They also served them with lemons instead of oranges, but at that point i was just happy to get anything.
And the food is just terrible. At least they give you chips & salsa to keep you from getting up and walking out. -

I would rather give this 3.5 stars. On a cool night, there is a fireplace you could sit near. The food is really good and the views are great since it is right at the ferry terminal on the water, but the restaurant appears to be understaffed and the kitchen timing is terrible. Every time I go I keep wanting and hoping the experience will be different, but they consistently cant get it together- whether the restaurant is busy or dead. I found myself looking for the waiter to order additional drinks and waiting far too long to both locate the waiter and once ordered to wait for the drink to actually arrive. The food either came out all at once after loong waits, dishes were forgotten, and the last time we got one appetizer, the meal and then after we were done with the meal, the second appetizer we ordered came out. If they could improve the kitchen timing and hire more wait staff, this place would be a favorite.

Review from Monica S.
For a restaurant and bar that prides itself on margaritas, heck, there's even a dedicated menu with different varieties, I was so let down with what actually came served in my glass.
Upon first observation, everything seems incredibly promising. The backbar is fully stocked with tons of different tequilas and the menu featured key phrases like 100% de agave, top shelf, Grand Marnier, crushed grapes. It seems fresh and up to snuff with current trends in freshly made cocktails. But then, oy, THEN you see the bartender gets a call for a top shelf marg. He adds the 100% de agave tequila (a necessary base), he then adds Grand Marnier (awesome), but then he squirts in more than half a glass of neon-colored, artificially flavored sweet & sour mix. This is the kind of stuff you find at a ShopRite directly next to that highly sugared Daily's pina colada mix.
No top shelf margarita should ever fall victim to the artificially flavored sour and sour mix. And at $10 a pop, they're getting away with cocktail crime.
Nix sour mix. Please. And offer freshly squeezed limes.
The food was quite good and the ambiance might not get any better in Tiburon. You're sitting outdoors, waterside, taking in the extended views of the city and bay. The staff and bartenders were really excellent in their hospitality, shoutout to the amazing female manager.
I'd absolutely come back, just not for a margarita at this point. -

"Gone to the Birds"
This used to be one of our favorite places to bring visitors.
Great San Francisco view from the ferry dock
Menu has changed & staff has been cut
Happy hour is 4-7
The food is good; tasty guacamole
The beer is cold
The margaritas & mojitos are sweet
Too many birds on the patio that are overwhelming (but worse are the patrons who feed the gulls in spite of the signs that say "don't" - bird brains of a feather....
The delivery of food is slow & uncoordinated
We won't be coming back -

I went here with high hopes and with the idea I might check it out for a future event. I had never been here before, and I'm not sure I'll be back anytime soon, if at all. One of my dining companions mentioned that she heard they had changed hands - could explain things.
The views off the patio were perfect. My company and conversations were, of course, wonderful (the only thing that sidetracked me from the rest of it). The views of the dirty tables that were not cleared for a while were not. The $10 they charged for margaritas they failed to put alcohol in was not pleasant. The food was alright, but nothing I would want to pay that much cash for again considering portions and quality did not justify price. When the servers were there, they were pleasant, but they seemed too scattered and it didn't seem that busy on the patio. -

Review from Jacob that honest guy w.
Oakland, CA
I would give it no stars it were not sunny that day.
Dear Guaymas, what in the hell happened to you? We've been going to this upscale Yucatan inspired restaurant for about 6 years. We really enjoyed the fact that they put a lot of thought into their food and that it has wonderful items that you normally do not find at Mexican style eateries.
Our experience yesterday was a fatal blow to future trips to this establishment. I used to enjoy their Pollo en Cacahuete which was a great grilled chicken breast in a spicy peanut sauce. We also loved their Camarones Rellenos which were huge shrimp that were stuffed with jalapenos, cheese and bacon wrapped. We really came for the Plato de Entremeces which had wonderful black bean and duck sopes which were pastry cups filled with duck and one filled with black beans. All were wondeful and the entrees were always accompanied by wonderful rice, black beans and salsa.
I don't know what the owners were thinking but they really screwed up with their menu change. The menu we were given has shrunk by 60%. All of our wonderful items are gone and what what we were served was pedestrian Mexican Taqueria slop. It sucked. Hell, just add burritos and put the nail in the coffin.
I reluctantly ordered the calamari and it tasted like fish. Not crispy calamari that had a consistent breading but a sloppy mess that had a bad fishy flavor to it like it was tossed in there with whatever other fish they fried. It was awful.
Since none of the signature Yucatan dishes were on the menu anymore, I hesitantly ordered the Chicken Enchiladas. What came looked like a dish I could of gotten at any Taqueria in Oakland. Refried beans, two pathetic enchiladas and crunch Spanish rice. It was almost enedible.
To add insult to injury was my wife's $14.00 Shrimp Taco. Tiny little "breaded" shrimp plopped down on three tortillas and topped with cabbage. Where's the salsa? Where's the Mexican Crema? Lime? Cilantro? Nothing? It was embarrassing.
Also missing were the prompt Latino wait staff. Gringos have now taken over and it has just lost any true quality that it once had.
Three margaritas, one app and two entrees equaled $90.00. That is a
rip off.
The best change they made was by putting in new patio furniture which we will never sit in again.
I don't know who the brain child is behind this horrible business decision but you are now going to be trolled only by tourists and loyal locals like us are now being shut out because of your terrible business model. Shame on you Guaymas.

Verb of the day: HAPPY HOURING
Guaymas has quite a spectacular location, right on the water where the Tiburon Ferry docks. From inside the bar, you get a little slice of water view. Outside on a warm day, or on the top deck, you get a spectacular view.
Happy hour here is a great deal and goes 'til 7 p.m. Margaritas and Mojitos are $5, and all appetizers (except oysters) are 1/2 off. Jammer and I shared Ceviche (a nice size portion, but a bit bland and un-limey) and some lightly spiced fried calamari. Chips, seved with 3-types of fresh salsa, were free and refillable. The bar attracted a nice crowd, seemingly happy to take advantage of the nice location at happy hour prices.
My favorite thing was our especially smiley, happy-to-be-there bartender, Francisco who, when we said we'd share a 3rd margarita, pourd it into 2 separate glasses for us. Kool. The 4th star is for Francisco. -

Seems to still be nose diving. This place has been around forever... they need to pull up and figure out, precisely, what is going on. If we need to pay more for good chefs or fresh ingredients, I think we will do it. But pay attention to the reviews and trends and subjectively evaluate your process because it's pretty bad right now. the 2nd star is for the location... which isn't leaving you much love on the food....
The Tortilla Soup was like saltwater. It was so sad. The Oysters were fine. The veggie plate was sloppy, but wifey enjoyed it, although somewhat bland (the salt was all in the soup). Margs and Sangria are always fine....
but they need to have a pow wow or something. Service was frightened and nervous.... he wasn't bad, but for whatever reason he was scared to be at work rubbed off on us pretty obviously. I hope they can pull it together.1 Previous Review: Show all »

This place is horrible. Service is beyond slow. We waited for 40 minutes for our food when the restaurant was empty on a Tuesday night. We were a party of 4 and the waiter forgot to enter one of our orders in- which he realized after 3 plates were served, so in total, we waited for 50 mins for our food. Eventually the waiter stopped waiting on us and the manager took over. We sat right by the kitchen so I don't think that they forgot us.
As for the food. Please, I am not a fan of Chevy's but I would have rather gone to Chevy's instead. This place is just expensive. $20+ for 2 seafood skewers with black beans and rice.. I think I will pass. The food is not bad- just not worth your money.
All I can say is that the margaritas are ok. The salsa is not bad either.
Pass on the dessert. If you want to get the ice cream tacos, stop by your local Safeway and buy ChocoTacos instead. You will get your money's worth there instead. It's probably less than $6 a box anyways. The chocolate mousse is decadent- I guess. It is too rich and can only have a few bites. The churros are a little softer than the ones they sell at Taco Bell. The flan seemed like it was not set yet. If you like flan that is like a panacotta, then order it.
The manager even lied to us about getting parking validated.
I will never be going here again.
