Our realtor referred us to Guaranteed Rate Mortgage for our first home purchase (a condo). We worked with Shimmy Braun and Tom Fishwick, with additional support from Courtney (I forget her last name). These guys were *awesome* throughout every minute of the process: getting pre-authorized, then getting a commitment letter, then the final approval. They respond to phone calls and e-mails in a timely manner, and answered all of my newbie questions with patience, authority, and accuracy. During our closing, Tom even faxed over some paperwork in very short order to correct a misprint on one of our documents - he did it so quickly that the entire closing took less than 90 minutes.
In addition to all that, they got us a good interest rate and a better-than-average mortgage interest deal with our 5% down payment.
I will definitely be calling Guaranteed Rate again when we eventually sell this condo. Highly recommended.
We met with Leslie on the recommendation of my brother-in-law. He warned us that she was a bit intense. I was still caught off guard. She is is pretty amped, and broadsides you with he strange humour. She is nice though, and you can tell. She explained everything about the whole process to us very well, and we felt pretty comfortable.
However, she doesn't have a license for IL, so she passed us on to her team and they did most of the work after that meeting. That would have been fine, but it seemed Leslie was a little too hands-off.
We planned on a huge down payment. As in 6 figures. They all knew that, as well as exactly which bank accounts we had our money in, which were all non-local internet banks. We were first-time home buyers, and a little ignorant of all the fine points of the process. This they all knew, but no one checked with us to make sure we had all our ducks in a row for the closing. We found out the day before closing that we needed all that money in a cashier's check, which you can't get from a bank that has no local branches. And since the amount was so large, the liquidity was severely diminished. We ended up not closing until 4 days later because off all this. I feel someone dropped the ball at Guaranteed Rate, and no one was there to pick it back up and help once things went haywire.
If nothing else, make sure you do not close on a Friday!
Love these guys/gals! My LO, Jonathan Jerrotz, out of the San Diego branch is AWESOME. Goes way above and beyond typical expectations and does whatever he can to get the job done, and get it done right. His assistant Danielle also works very hard to make sure things go smoothly and efficiently. I can't thank these two enough for working hard for me and my clients. Thank you, thank you.
I must say, I am very pleased with the rate, the fees (none!) and the process of my most recent refinance with Guaranteed Rate Mortgage. Historically, I have worked with others in financing two mortgages, and I'm very happy that this time I shopped around. My neighbor spoke so highly of Shimmy and his staff that I just had to call. And again, the experience was nearly perfect. Tom Fishwick was professional and attentive and above all, patient. He explained all details to me when asked so that I felt comfortable with what can be a daunting experience. There were some glitches at closing, but they were swiftly and easily settled with no ruffled feathers at all. Again, I had a great experience and would definitely call Tom again if I needed to.
We just closed on our first home last week. I called several lenders and brokers and was not able to get a decent rate and could not get pre-approved for the amount I wanted. So, I called Guranteed Rate and spoke to Jason Duffy. He pre-approved me for the loan amount that I wanted and gave me a very good rate. He was extremely efficient and professional. He didn't waste any time and he always returned my calls promptly. The closing went quickly and smoothly. Thanks Jason for your help!
Nikki Pill and G-Rate Rule! That sounds like a punk band, I know. I have bought and refi-ed homes several times and have some experience working with mortgage brokers both good and bad. I found Nikki extremely easy to work with and incredibly efficient at getting the deal done.
Additionally, I'm a Realtor and I have referred several clients to Guaranteed Rate. I think they are a great company and very competitive on their rates. If I have one complaint it's that the loan officers are somewhat married to their desks (by company decree, I believe.) This is not a problem for an experienced homeowner but I find that first time buyers may need a bit more "hand-holding." I don't know if that is a reason to dock them a whole star or not....let's say a half-star.

George Kennessey and his remarkably able assistant Amanda Dodge made the whole process of obtaining a mortgage a breeze! My sister also used them a year ago, and had a very positive experience as well. Very competent people who are on top of things each step of the way. TRULY EXCELLENT!
I recently used a broker named Michael Nielsen. My entire experience could not have been smoother. I checked around and not only did he give me a completely fair deal, he was very patient and explained the MANY aspects thoroughly and smoothly.
I used a family friend in the past and was referred to Mike from a friend and I was glad that I gave him a shot. TOP NOTCH and very ethical!!
