Heading up to Asheville for the weekend and I broke out the yelp in Sylva. This was the number one place. I have been to Sylva with my dad growing up to buy Christmas Trees around the area but never stopped in town. I wish I could have talked him into stopping. The city, Sylva, is a hip place. The people are friendly and lots of young people with and without kids.
Guadalupe yelp reviews are spot on. The atmosphere is great, the wait staff was friendly and the food was very good.
We were with another couple so we sampled a few dishes.
Started out with a few beers. The selection was great. They had many micro brews to choose from.
The Salsa sampler is chef choice, (3 of the 4 that they make). The mango Salsa was sweet and would be good for breakfast and it takes the heat off of the scotch bonnet salsa. I thought it would be hotter but they balance the heat well.
My wife and I had the a pulled pork dish with rice, black beans, tomatoes and goat cheese. Goat cheese rocks. I need to buy a goat for the house :).
We wanted the pickle okra but they were out. They brought us some plantains instead. They were very tasty. Spot on with the texture and flavor.

The best way to sum up Guadalupe is Fresh ingredients. It tasted like they had a garden on the roof and were picking from it.
If I am driving any place around this area, I will be stopping for lunch or dinner. This is a must place to eat in Sylva,

With all these stellar reviews, I really wanted LOVE Guadalupe, but it turned out to be just okay.

We came on a fairly slow Monday night, and our server seemed utterly uninterested.  I tried out the build-your-own burrito, except without the wrap. The chicken was sort of dry, and the "coconut" rice is a funny neon yellow color. Everything else- beans, tomato, avocado- was just alright. I felt it lacked the kind of oomph you expect from a Caribbean fusion restaurant.

One thing I did really like was the lime crema, which is a condiment made from sour cream, lime and cilantro... all my favorite things. That was really great.

Guadalupe... not bad, but no real reason to come back here either. Except maybe for the lime crema. :)

Guadalupe Cafe, a small, hip restaurant on Main Street is the best restaurant in small, hip Sylva, NC.  They took an old soda bar and made it into a terrific place to enjoy a great beer, a nice (healthy pour) glass of wine and some terrific tapas.

The Okra Appetizer is always a great place to start.  All of the main courses are good, but anything with pork is probably the best way to go on your first visit.  My favorite is probably the Adobo Pork Tostada.  Make sure to ask for the homemade hot sauce (not on the menu) for a nice, vinegary, spicy kick to your meal.

It can get crowded on Friday, but feel free to belly up to the bar and enjoy your meal there.  If you're in town on a weekday, try visiting on Tuesday and you'll hear some of the best old timey music these mountains have to offer.  If you ask nicely, Hal and Adam might even join you for a Terrapin after they get done playing.

    I love Guadalupes!

Fresh local food with great twists. The staff is fantastic and the live music is usually on point.

I suggest going on a weekend night and mingling with the locals!

I am pleased to have a "Local Grower/Meats" supporter type of restaurant that is as good and Veggie friendly like Guadalupe. In my first visit I had the spicy mango tofu  tacos. The flavor are well thought out and super delicious. The plate was a collage of Mexican, Asian Fusion, Indian, and Southern, with saffron style rice, soy sauce steamed greens, fried okra and the spicy mango tofu tacos.  This is a place I will be frequenting many more times to come.

i've dined in many places.  london.  paris.  amsterdam.  new york.  LA.  dar es salaam.

so please take me seriously when i say that, to this date, guadalupe cafe is one of my favorite restaurants. ever.

since the first day they opened, i have eaten here more times than i can count.  i lived above them for two years  and during that time i got dinner there at least 3-4 times a week.  to be honest, i ate there that much even when we weren't neighbors.  i can vouch for their consistency, which is a HUGE plus. because, seriously, how horrible is it to go to a restaurant, find a dish you can't live without, and then return to find it tasting changed for the worse?

the food is perfect every time.

they have a small kitchen, with no more than two people working at a time.  while this does not  allow for mass produced, super fast food preparation, what it does allow for is food that is cooked to order and is super fresh.  the focus is on creative, sometimes time intensive, dishes that you simply will not find at at larger restaurants. the menu is small and changes seasonally (although there are established items that are available pretty much all the time).  the  ingredients are local when possible, and they use all free-range meats (including seafood).

the menu...my favorite is the mango pork taco.  cinnamon/clove infused, slow cooked pork topped with fresh mango salsa.  it was usually served with sesame greens, which compliment the pork perfectly, but sides change based on season and availability.  they also allow you to build your own taco/burrito with ingredients such as the above mentioned pork, chicken, goat cheese, avacado-almond salsa, coconut rice, and other delicious ingredients that you won't find at your typical taco joint.

another favorite of mine is the cowgirl salad.  the lime crema dressing is perfect and i don't typically like cream dressing.  it's light and delicately spiced rather than heavy and mayonnaisey.  and ALWAYS fresh.

if a large meal isn't what you're after, guadalupe also specializes in tapas.  these also change seasonally.  past offerings include fried platains with tamarind ketchup...goat cheese empanadas...various tamales...fried okra spears....spicy dumplings.  last night, we tried pepper encrusted asparagus with tahini dipping sauce.  it was amazing.  it was spicy and sweet and crunchy.  all at the same time.

they also offer different salsas and chips which you can order as sides.  be warned, these aren't the salsas prepared by throwing all the ingredients in a processor.  they are hand prepared, chunky and FRESH. my favorite is the scotch bonnet salsa w/ roasted onions.  very hot, very special.  they also fry their own chips, which are some of the best i've had anywhere.

the have a great selection of beers.  all micro brews, with high gravity, regional, and organic selections.  they also offer a full range of wines.

there are less expensive places you can eat.  there are faster places you can eat.  but there aren't very many better places you can eat.  do yourself a favor and check it out.  you can't go wrong.

local. fresh and my favorite place for appetizers or an entire meal. meet and greet your pals or dine with your sweetheart..
Vegetarian and vegan friendly, Guadalupe is the BEST place to eat in sylva. Not only can you choose Veg and vegan options, but whats better than a "build your own burrito" with yummy stink cheeses and local veggies? Guadalupe also features Goat meat, brought to us by the famous Jackie Palmer... the goat lady. shes awesome too.
a nice list of fancy and local beers. a good list of wines and fresh local desserts. Weekend nights, you will find it a little crowded... don't go in not expecting to have an hour or so to enjoy your meal. Its worth it!!! Also, on the weekends and i know for sure on Tuesday nights there is plenty of live entertainment... thank you Guadalupe for exhisting in our little town of Sylva...yeah.
