Helllooo new breakfast place!
My friends always gabbed about it but I had yet to try, being that parking is a nuisance, but so is the 28...
Similar to Squat and Gobble (conveniently across the street!) where you order from the counter and there is semi-table service. The staff behind the counter was super friendly, and not in the fake "ugh this is my job" type of way you normally hear.
My food came quick and my bagel was perfectly toasted, except had a weird pink-ish specky thing that I chose to ignore. The apples in my fruit salad were also a bit TOO acidic- not sure that that means but I ignored them as well. I think picking them out helped me fit in with the other Marina yuppies, and I'm all about keeping up appearances. (bleh.)
I was confused about the internet thing- you need your receipt, but i dont think there were any numbers on it? I will have to ask next time I got in.
Bummed to find out coffee refills are $1, but I guess you gotta do what you can in these hard times, eh? Wished the music was a little louder and the dorky guy in a meeting was a little quieter, but the food and sitting in the window in the sunshine like a kitten made up for it. Wait.. what?
I had breakfast here with friends on a Sunday. It was impossible to find seating, and we ended up at an awkward table that was too short for the "chairs" (uncomfortable wooden block stools) we had. Combine that with clumsy me = lots of food spilled on the floor.
The food was good and came out pretty quickly. I had the breakfast special - poached eggs, hash browns, bacon and toast. My friend's breakfast burrito was missing the bacon he added on (and for $2.50 extra!) but they gave him a refund for the added charge.
The cafe is very cute, with ski lift benches, fake deer heads, and fireplace with a fake fire, but I would rather have more comfortable seating.
So, my first review.....
Went to this place tonight at the suggestion of other Yelpers for a nice Marina place to grab some wine and read.
Tonight I couldn't have been more in my element.
Grabbed a glass of Pinot Grigio, 'bout an hour into my stay had the French Onion soup, delicious! and basically lounged into square shaped rustic area in the middle of the seating area.
I think the way they arranged the seating is quite clever.....
anywho....one thing I noticed was the music. When I am reading/studying, I am quite particular about my music. So, I'm thinkin', "okay, they've got like a indy-country theme goin'" which was okay at first and then I'm like, enough, because I did not come here to two-step, at least they could have like an alternative-country fusion, and then something kicked off like a Chris Issac/Tom Petty combo which was an improvement, and then the music selection must have been pickin' up on my subconsiousness because they played not one, but TWO songs by the Smitereens. After that, I am not sure what to think about the Hendrix style "Great Balls of Fire". Nonetheless, I was so into my book and the vibes around me, that I couldn't have been more content.
So, all in all, one terrific evening. I will definately be back mucho....
It's funny that lots of people seem to think of a ski lodge when they come to this place because I did not get that at all.
Their seating was quite uncomfortable for the most part and didn't make you want to snuggle up to the person next to you -- only steal their pillow from under their butt.
I will say though, I was here for an ungodly number of hours working and they didn't kick me out. Though every time the busser/waiter guy came by, I was sure he was going to.
I had their three cheese grilled cheese and it was very cheesy but also very very greasy. I guess that's the fate of cheese when it's a threesome.
I ordered a Fat Tire and was rather shocked when they said it would be $7. Maybe I'm just cheap. Yes, a little. But regardless, I heard myself saying ... "uh, no" even as I realized they had already poured it for me. I got a bit of an admonishment for not looking at the prices beforehand. True that. I order Pear cider instead and that was more in my price range.
Everyone was really nice though and I will come back. I want to try their steak florentine. Sounds delicious. Oh, and the lemonade was fantastic.
Great atmosphere in this place, its really cool inside. Ordering is done at the counter and food is brought out.
Their salads are great, I've had the Morrocan and the Yucatan Chicken which are both execllent, the only problem is they are a little pricey. I supose I can justify that since you do get what you pay for, and the salads aren't tiny.
The only thing that pisses me off is the Free Wifi thing. 5 dollars every 30 minutes? So if you buy something less than 5 dollars you get no wifi? I bought 17 dollars worth of food, and I got 1 hour and 30 minutes to eat my shit and get out. They didn't even round it up to 2 hours.... nice of them. Seriously if you're the owner and you're reading this shit, my review would've been 5 stars.
Perhaps this is silly, but I go here when I feel like I need a real dose of the Marina. Now, you may question why I need to fill this quota, but something about the people there remind me vaguely of East Coasters, but with a CA twist, so it makes me a bit nostalgic for the old college days in Boston. The cafe itself is just fine--I like the decor--it feels kind of like you're in a ski lodge, and the menu is fairly good--but it's really nothing to write home about, unless you're a sentimentalist like me. Oh, and I love men in suits, and out here in Berkeley those are few and far between.
I've had the salads here, which are amply portioned and more interesting than just a few pieces of romaine, which is nice--as well as the coffee, which is not A+. It's a bit loud, so not great for studying, unless you do well with noise. I would go for the people watching, perhaps lunch, but take your coffee dollars elsewhere. The place fills a niche in the area, but it's not really about the food, it's about soaking up the Marina in all its glory.
Love the fact that the outside tables are like a small dog park. Well at least on the day I went.
This place is great. In an awesome location, totally easy to find parking in the marina, and met a friend at 1 and still got a table without waiting.
The salads are huge and fresh and totally yummy. I was full and hadn't even eaten half. For outside tables everything is pretty clean.
The chai was soooo yummy. I would drive all the way to SF just for their chai...hmm, that gives me an idea.
Wil be back, again and again....
Just push past those prepster yuppies and come on ovah!
The food is scrumptious, the java soothing, the power outlets plentiful, the parking easy (one patron even told me they rarely enforce the 2-hour parking rules in these parts - presuming the revenue base is sufficient here...), and the breakers are within walking distance.
One star short of perfect because the WiFi sucks and you do, in fact, have to deal with a fairly homogenous lot which is a sacrifice for those who like a little flavah in their lives. But doing some work here and walking 5 minutes to Crissy Field for some post-left-brain meditation makes it tough to repress this yelp.
This place is popular, packed full of people @ 10:30pm Friday nite. The menu is really what drew us in, very focused on comfort foods.
We ordered:
1. Chicken Pot Pie (I didn't try this since it has chicken)...
2. Beet Salad w/ greens and goat cheese - huge, I couldn't finish it. Maybe a little too much vinagrette.
3. Vegetarian Chili - hearty, chock full of good veggies, a tad bit too much salt. Probably the best dish of the nite though.
It was comfy and dark on the inside, super great service, food decent (but not to die for)...
Horrible Experience.
They messed up on my order and when I expressed that my meal was not what I ordered I was given attitute and it took them 20 minutes to correct it. Then they told me I needed to throw my starbucks away because outside beverages are not allowed... overall- this place is overpriced and the service is RUDE. There are so many other places to go in the Marina, so there is no excuse for this horrible experience.
ive been to grove fillmore multiple times and love that place. the food i order there is always excellent. maybe here i ordered the wrong thing at the wrong time but we came here for brunch on a sat and it was not as good as i would have thought.
i didnt even want to order their fresh squeezed OJ because their oranges looked so yellow that the juice looks yellow as well. i didnt want to ask them if it was sweet because they would probably tell me yes and it wouldnt be. i ordered the eggs florentine it was probably the worst ive ever had. the muffin was huge, thick, dry, and on the stale side. i saw tiny grill marks on it but geez leave it on for a little longer. and some butter or something on it? the sauce was cheese based and really pungent. the hashbrowns or the sauce had a slight chemical taste to it. i couldnt tell which one so i finished the hasbrowned. the spinach was raw. not sure if it supposed to be. tomatoes kind of strewn on the side.
totally disappointed. not sure if its the location or what i ordered
I'm Oakland hipster to the bone. I don't do "ritual coffee" or "blue bottle" because finding a hipster destination based on reading Yelp reviews all night and going on chowhound is the lamest ass thing. that's not real hipster. That's imposter hipster. In other words, if you want to go to a real place, you have to stumble upon it naturally. you can't SEARCH for it.
So I found myself in the Marina, an area which makes me wonder why Osama bin Laden chose the World Trade and not Marina. Should I explain? It's not the people. it's not even how wealthy many of these women are. It's not the 900 dollar strollers. It's the sense that everything is engineered to be a certain way. there's really no sense of organic growth. No real art scene. No real artists. Just wives and ralph lauren kids.
The grove is good. Good coffee. Awful morning burrito. What i like is their investment in the space. All natural wood everywhere. it's a hella handsome space. I wish there were more investments like these in Oakland.
I recommend the Grove on Fillmore instead. It's near the Marc Jacobs store where you can at least see some graffitii and public art.
On my third time to the Grove, I expected a better than average meal. I did not get that. The enchiladas came out lukewarm, and probably 5-10 minutes later than needed. My friends burrito looked pretty damn dry too.
The decor gets 3.5 stars though.

Never had anything to eat there....but I really like the atmospere...plus, tea is good (can't really mess it up, can you? lol)...service is good too
Maybe it is just me, I don't understand why people like The Grove so much. The food is um . . . nothin' to write home about, fairly disappointing actually. It is always crowded and hard to find a seat. The ambiance is ok, but it really isn't much. They do have some outside tables maybe nice for an afternoon drink on a sunny day.
Beautiful people come here to stare at other beautiful people while pretending to be doing work on their laptops and that is about all it is good for.
Disappointed. Me, Bf and friends walked up and down Chestnut looking for a nice little cafe for lunch (but we were in a breakfasty mood since we woke up at about 1pm and it was about 2pm). This looked good to all of us so we ordered and sat down (no waiter service, my pet peeve).
The ambiance is the only reason I give this place 2 stars. Its very chill, cool, kinda reminds me of a ski lodge with all the dark wood, the fireplace, etc. They have lots of comfy seating, too.
I had a grilled cheese sandwich with three cheeses and turkey. My sissy had the cheese and chicken quesadilla, and we shared a bowl of tomato basil soup.
BF and his friend shared the Eggs Florentine and some breakfast burrito thing. They both thought everything was ok.
Who the F puts pickles on a cheese sandwich but doesn't write on the damn menu that they are going to do that?! I pulled the pickles off my sammie but still couldn't eat it because the pickle juice had soaked in to the bread and it tasted so bad I almost puked. The soup was ok, but it was really chunky, and didn't arrive hot so yeah... basically... NO.
My sissy had about 2 bites of her quesadilla before she was over it because it was soooooo dry and bland. She had a couple bites of my cheesy pickle grossness to hold her over until we could get back to the Valley and get some real food.
I was pretty disappointed about our $60 breakfast/lunch.
For a cafe, it's such a cute, cozy, casual spot. You can spend as much time as you want there and no one will stare at you to get out. There's free wi-fi. The food is ok...nothing amazing.
I just like going there because it's just a chill place to have long catch up conversations with my friends.
Must try the breakfast special with whole wheat toast! They also do amazing salads, soups, and sandwiches. There is always a ton of people inside of here on MacBooks or chatting with friends over huge lattes.
Service is super fast, food is reasonably priced and well portioned, and I've never had a bad experience here. Everyone that I introduce to the Grove seems to like it a lot. They're always playing good music, and the way I feel when I stroll into this place is simply "city." Yes, I am an urban dweller with my laptop or stack of papers, eating my weekend brunch while John Mayer sings some late 90's music to me ;-)
They also have alcohol! Not sure why you'd have drinks here as opposed to the plethora of other places in the neighborhood, but I certainly can't fault them for offering it on the menu!
I was stuck in the Marina on Saturday craving a good carb-lucious breakfast so it was off to the Grove for french toast or waffles!
I was flip flopping up until the very last moment when I blurted out, "French toast!" And then I immediately regretted it. Because...
It's Semifreddi's sweet batard! I was thinkin', "That's some big bread. It better not be dry."
Oh oh oh oh! The french toast is perfection. Where shall I begin? The insides of the toast were moist and eggy. The edges of the toast were crispy and ever so slightly burnt. I didn't tell them to put the butter on the side so I presume that the butter was melted into my toast. The syrup was the perfect compliment to this wonderfully textured french toast. I barely noticed there was no sugar on top. There is a small smattering of strawberries that do their job but it would be nice to have more.
*wipes drool* I'm going to experiment making this at home so I can save myself $7.50.

Coming here reminds me why I don't care to hang out in the Marina.

After a tedious morning of shopping at the Warehouse jean sale, I wandered around Chestnut with my friends looking for a place to eat. We passed by a bunch of places with yummy menus, but we ended up picking The Grove because it looked like it had more seating available.
I was originally craving a mimosa, but the white chocolate mocha caught my eye( http://static.px.yelp.... ). I'm glad I changed my mind...I really needed the coffee. The mocha was nice and creamy and the barrista made pretty little designs( http://static.px.yelp.... ).
Two of us went for the turkey club( http://static.px.yelp.... ), and our other friend got the eggs florentine( http://static.px.yelp.... ). The food looked so good, and it was! The ingredients were super fresh! I even added bacon into my turkey club....bacon makes everything better!
I saw a lot of people ordering the breakfast burrito, and it looked super good. I'll be back another day to give it a try!
Conveniently located 3 blocks from my abode, the Grove on Chestnut has been my go-to spot when I've needed to wade through reams of paper peppered by obtuse argument. My decoder: Sam Adams on tap. My nourishment: spicy chicken wings. My challenge: having to explain to colleagues why my papers (and laptop keyboard and screen) are peppered by tiny splotches of spicy chicken wing sauce and the occasional orange fingerprint.
(- 1 star for lacking free wifi).
The Grove is a great place to grab a quick lunch or sit outside and read a book with a beer all afternoon. They have great outside seating at both locations. I love their sandwiches... The three cheese one is amazing. I would also reccomend the salads. You can build your own which many people do not know. They have great portions and I always have enough to bring home for a snack later. The prices are typical- not cheap not expensive. I love how they allow dogs to sit outside by the tables. The service is quick and friendly.
*Preface: This review applies to both the Grove Cafe on Chestnut and the Grove Fillmore. Although I moved to a block from the Fillmore Grove about 6 months ago, I've spent a lot more time in the Chestnut one so it's most appropriate to post here.
I love the Grove Cafe's atmosphere. The dimness, the rickety tables, the newish electric fireplace, and the cramming in of customers all contribute to this character of this place. Given that I enjoy yuppies, love my laptop, and get a kick watching soccer moms personalize their orders (salad instead of chips, dressing on the side, no mayo, no crouton, etc.), I really do love coming here. I could go on, but you get the idea.
Now, what I don't like: I feel like the staff has been trained to try to take me for a ride. I'm someone who doesn't appreciate the upsell--if I order a tea for 3.50, you don't have to suggest that I may enjoy a giant cookie or a slice or pie or any of the selection of "delightful" desserts that you may have to offer EVERY SINGLE TIME. If I order a meal and ask for a glass of water, it doesn't mean that I hadn't thought of perhaps wanting a nice glass of fresh OJ or a coke or whatever designer rootbeer you have. I see it, you place display models of these things right under my nose at the register. I'm already paying 10 bucks for a sandwich, just leave it alone!
I would leave it at 4 stars, but I'm also taking off another star for the pay-for-internet system they have set up. They have not one but two deep blue wireless connections set up for the customer's convenience. Their monthly plans are more than I pay for internet at home, and their daily plan--well, I can't remember the cost, I only remember thinking it was a way too much. If I bring my laptop, I always try to sit next to the window to try and snag the Squat and Gobble signal (or the Tango Gelato one at the Fillmore location)--guilty. I just think it's a shame to have to pay for internet after paying for a pretty expensive lunch with so many cafes offering free internet in the area, like the Coffee Roastery or Espresso Roma.
That said, I come here mostly to read and go to other places for the internet experience. Of course, it's their prerogative to run their business however they want to, but know I would come here a lot more often if the internet were free and if they didn't have a bridge to sell me with each register experience.
Oh yeah, I like their food. I didn't actually get to that...
I enjoy coming here once a week in the mornings to get some work done without being bothered. It has a nice ski lodge feel to it and they have wifi so it does the trick. The food is average to above average depending on what you get, but it is on the pricey side for a cafe. Much better on weekdays as weekends its gets much too crowded.
Recommend the Chicken Nachos. Draft beers are big, selection is pretty good. Service is great. Guys at the register are super hunky and very friendly.
Evenings, sit outside if you can snag a table, drink, eat and people watch.
The internet here is unacceptable, especially considering the prices. The place boasts "free wifi" but only offers 30 mins per every $5 spent. I spent $18.50 here today (buys you a mediocre salad, coffee w/ refills, and a cookie) and used 1.5 hours of internet. Because I was working in Word and pasting into an e-mail, I did not see that my internet was disconnected. I would have had to spend another $1.50 to earn another 30 mins. I asked the manager to do me the courtesy of granting me another 30 mins so that I could access the internet and send the e-mail I had been working on for the past hour. HE REFUSED!!!!! I called the owner immediately to complain, walked down the street to Peet's, bought a tea, was granted two hours of internet access, wrote this review, and now will send my @#$%'ing e-mail! WHAT TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE! OUTRAGEOUS!
A few days ago I spent three hours at the Grove Cafe without even realizing it. This is how you know you have found a great cafe. I had been there a few times before for brunch and enjoyed myself, but its always so crowded on weekends I wasn't sure what to think about it.
I recommend experiencing the Grove the way I did, a Wednesday afternoon, large hot coffee...score one of the couches or a bench seat by the fire place and just snuggle down lost in a book or devouring the latest SF Weekly.
The ambiance and furniture make it feel so homey and comfortable, you'll never want to leave. Plus the delicious menu, gigantic coffee drinks and consistent turnover of athletic Marina eye-candy will keep you hanging out long past your welcome. I know it did for me.
See you on my next work break Grove Cafe!
One of the few places open early on a Saturday in the Marina. We had brunch here after a good workout.
I had the special Yucatan chicken salad with habanero vinegarette, which came with avocado slices, romaine, tender chicken with a good kick from the spicy dressing. This was really tasty and I paired it with a cup of tomato basil soup, which was also nice, especially with some of their fresh crispy bread.
My Americano was very smooth and they also do a huge glass of fresh squeeze OJ. Nice tasty, and healthy meal after working out, I'd come back.
Went there for the first time last night; it was a Wednesday night just before 8 p.m., and it was only a little crowded. I had the B.L.T. with a cup of tomato basil soup. Both pretty good, however it took them a long while to get our order to us. Might've been a fluke since folks behind us got their food well before we did.
Great cozy decor; you feel like you're at a ski lodge and want to while away the whole evening.
Hey, remember The Canvas Cafe Gallery & Lounge? I think The Canvas was modeled after this place but didn't quite hit the mark. I got a big Canvas-vibe when I walked into the Grove.
It was evening on a monday, and there were plenty of people with teapots as well as harder bevvies scattered about the place. The counterfolk were smiley and it was a fine experience. Seemed like a relaxing place to be on a weeknight.
Coffee was pretty weak but as it was about 10pm I got a decaf, and maybe that is not their 'strong' suit. Ahem.
I'd hit em up again.
I do like the arrangement of this cafe. Lots of seating all against the open windows and againsts the fireplace. Lots of people on computers here for the free wi-fi. I'm sorry but $9.50 for two Lattes is a little high though. I'm not whining but it was a little high.
This place is in an excellent location in the middle of the Chestnut shopping district. Service is fast and friendly so I've been back a few times when in the area. I like how the employees establish a rapor with you when you are ordering. They seem happy to be working there. More so than the store on Fillmore. I'll be back!
I am obsessed with their freshly squeezed apple juice...it's amazing! It was a great addition to my bacon, egg and cheese bagel sandwich.
Loved the little tables outside, great for people watching and enjoying a great meal in the sun when it's nice out. The service was good, fast and polite. It was really crowded when I went (Saturday around 11:30am), but that shows how much people love to come here.
This place has an old west saloon meets new age coffee shop feel to it.... very comfortable, and relaxing place.
The food was surprisingly good. I split the Steak Florentine sandwich and Mac'n cheese. The sandwich was very tasty, good amount of meat and avo, the mac'n cheese was awesome... I wouldn't suggest eating the entire bowl, it might put you in a food coma after your done.
The service was good, food came out pretty quick, and the price wasn't bad considering the location. My girlfriend and I both ate and each got a drink for about $25.
I didn't have any of the baked good, pies or coffee, which this place is know for.. I plan on gong back soon and trying out more of the menu.
*FYI - They had a good number of beers on tap
It's been years since I've hung out here, but it's still a great spot. I was a law student back when I discovered this place. So I would pack my backpack and haul my laptop here to study.
Years later, I'm back in the city, and it's still a nice spot to eat, drink and people watch. The staff is great. They're very friendly. This goes from the cashiers to the busers. The actual crowd can be hit or miss because it's mostly locals from the Marina/Cow Hollow area. But if you know the general demeanor of the people in the area, you deal with it and laugh when things progress to presumptuous or silly. Sometimes though you can also meet some nice people there. However, for me, it's really more about the atmosphere and being in a space where I can relax.
They have a good selection of beverages. Unlike other places, they also have a great selection of food from sandwiches, salads, soups and interesting side dishes. What I like is you can make your own salad and since I'll eat smoked salmon every chance I get, I ordered a salad with smoked salmon that was just divine.
It also has a nice rustic interior with lots of dark unfinished wood, big glass panel windows and skylights. An added perk, they've got wifi. I believe it's free. I'm not 100% sure because I subscribe to Boingo and it's also a Boingo hotspot. Check the other reviews for details on free wifi.
The Grove Cafe was part of the whirlwind tour I gave my bf weekend before last. We were doing the Marina, Palace of Fine Arts, GG Bridge and Fort Point on Sunday. So I figured we could get a decently filling start at the Grove. The food was tasty, I had scrambled eggs with hash browns, he had the BLT. We both had what I believe is the largest serving of fresh OJ I've seen in my life... very good. The only down side was that it was insanely crowded (granted it was a Sunday around 11am) and it took a really long time to get our food.
A little pricy, and crowded... but overall a good spot for breakfast or lunch.
I like both the Grove locations - whether at the Fillmore or the Marina, the ambiance of the cafe remains the same. Comfortable, cozy, and simply a warm environment. It is a good place for a cup of coffee and a meaningful conversation, might be too loud for people like me who like to sit in a more quiet cafe when I need to do work on my computer.
I enjoy their mocha, teas, and hot chocolate. Not exceptional but exactly what I wanted and expected. Love the drawings with milk on the foam of the drinks - so creative! I haven't tried any food at this location but my friend raved about the chicken pot pie and it DID look delicious. They also served it at almost 9:30 PM so I think it's awesome that they can still serve food so late. Good for the hungry people who want coffee while somehow missing dinner.
The servers have also been very friendly. My friend and I stayed until the cafe closed and they did not rush us and wished us a good night even though they were waiting for us to leave so that they could clean up and close! Definitely appreciated :)
Grove Cafe gets 3.5 stars - 3 for the food, and 4 for the ambiance/atmosphere.
The food wasn't terrible, but it was by no means spectacular. I could have cooked everything that we ordered myself, and it would have tasted the same. And I'm no cook! I got 2 poached eggs, 2 slices of bacon, and 2 fatty triangles of buttered wheat toast. I think that was around $8-$9. It was good, but not sure that all of it was worth what I paid for. I prefer hearty breakfasts, and while the above sounds like a lot, it really wasn't...
The bf got an omelette with spinach and tomatoes, and two types of cheese, along with those fatty slices of toast. His meal was a little better than mine. Neither of us particularly enjoyed the rosemary hash, which comes as a side to most breakfast orders...
I can recommend getting their OJ because it's huge (and reminded me of those hurricane glasses you can get while at Pat O'Brien's in Nawlin's) and definitely fresh squeezed.
I can also recommend sitting outside and people-watching if you get the chance to get a real feel for the Marina and its folk.
Note: You order your food at the counter in the front of the place, and they bring your food to you, so just keep that in mind if you're instead looking for a full-service, sit-down place. And you'll probably have to endure somewhat of a wait here.
Its where I get things done, its where I am productive, its where I chat with people, its where I do my hobby reading... I go here so much! I can bury myself here for hours...
Not only all this, I love their brunch food (hello sol's bagel); I love their big lattes, their warm teas; I love their nachos; I love their salads. Its my all-in-one-place.
The only thing is (otherwise it would be 5 stars), finding a seat during busy times is so hard and not all seating is close to electric outlets which one needs to juice up their laptop... so a little annoying. Oh I wish they had free wi-fi... come on now...
But I do LOVE this place...its my second home, my second office...
Excellent atmosphere, very laid back feel.
They have all kinds of breakfast foods, (omelets, breakfast burritos, French toast, etc.) salads & sandwiches. Great place to go grab a coffee & just hang out with a book, some work or a laptop.
The orange juice is fresh squeezed and delicious. The breakfast burritos are good. Everything I have tried there has been good (although nothing spectacular).
