Dennis cuts my hair, and has for the past few years.  Yesterday I received the best haircut he has ever given me.  And I have always like the ones in the past.  I just tell him a few ideas I have, and let him makes sense of them (because he is the expert, not me).  He is a great story teller too (Yesterday it was about some movie with "Ben" the rat), so time really flies.  Also, Ronnie, the guy who washed my hair before the cut gave me an incredible scalp massage, something I think a lot of salons have forgotten about.   Love it.  I feel cute and stylish, but not trendy.

If you want your hair colored perfectly, go to Alison at Gro. Seriously.

I never find beauty industry pros that I stick with because so many of them just make little to no impression on me -- either that or they make a bad impression because they're not terribly skilled at what they do or try to force some style on you that isn't what you wanted.

But Alison is an artist. She understands layering, framing, highlighting, lowlighting, texture, and depth. It's pretty phenomenal the way she can make me look so good with hair dye. I trust her completely -- so much that when I go in, I usually just say, "Do something awesome."

I have never gotten my hair cut at Gro, but every person I see coming in or out of the place looks great and very "a la mode."

And "a la mode" means basically "of the fashion." People don't have ice cream on their head at Gro. But if Alison told me that Pecan Praline with jimmies was the best color for spring or that ice cream is a great glossy finish, I would totally believe her.

I cut my own hair, and I do a pretty good job, but I wanted to pick up some new pointers and get a fresh take without paying anything, so  I found a listing for hair models. After finishing cosmetology school, beauticians have apprenticeships where they cement their skills. My stylist Tammy went to the Aveda Institute and was working on an apprenticeship at Gro. Every Tuesday she does a Free Cut Day to build a clientele.

It was a great experience, man. Gro was laid back, uber chill, didn't give me any attitude when I arrived a few minutes late, sat me right down and got started. They don't make their staff wear uniforms, so emps get to make their own fashion statement.
Tammy was warm, adept at making  conversation, and did a good job.

It makes me want to go back and pay her to cut my hair as a real client. Maybe one day when I'm rich.

I have been here twice.

If you can afford a $55 [plus tip] hair cut, see Nicole. She rocks the hair!
(She gets five stars, her fees knock the review down a notch, though.)

Be warned, cash only tips!

I came to this salon very open minded with the idea that I wanted to go dark for the winter, everything else I left up to the stylist.  I am extremely satisfied with the color choices and highlight placement.  I think that I've found a place that I can trust to color my hair.  Now I just need to find someone I can trust to cut it.

I chose this salon after reading the reviews on yelp.  I went in for a cut and highlights.  I met with my colorist for a consultation, and while she seemed to listen to me during the consultation, the color she provided me with was nothing like what I asked for.  Then I had my hair cut and the stylist who cut my hair also didn't listen to me so I ended up paying $200 for a color I didn't want and my hair barely trimmed (I had asked her to take off two inches) and the cut ended up growing out oddly.  In their defense, I do have really curly hair.  However, I made a point of mentioning this when I made an appointment.  I didn't contact them after to complain, I just decided I'd never go there again and try someplace else.

Simply the best unassuming salon in Chicago!! I have been seeing Dennis for at least 5 years and never have I been disappointed. I don't even walk in with an idea of what needs to be done to my head because Dennis has enough vision for the both of us. If you are looking for a creative, chill, unpretentious place to to get a cut and color, try GRO!

My friend at work recommended that I try this salon.  (I live in the city and was previously driving out the suburbs to get my hair done).  I am VERY PICKY about my hair and freak out every time.  After going for the first time, I will be a returning customer.
Nicole cut my hair and gave me a slight bang.  The front desk staff and all the stylists are friendly.  The salon has a cool atmosphere without the attitude.  I liked that my stylist took her time using her thinning shears and told me not to use razor scissors anymore.  I can tell she really knows her stuff.  I highly recommend it and don't find it too expensive given that I used to pay way more at Mario Tricoci and my stylist in the burbs.

Great stylists. My pal got her hair done there free cuz she worked the front desk and they were excellent at cuts and very skilled at color. I'd go, but I just ask my friends to cut my hair with sewing scissors.

Gro is set in Bucktown, which is a bit of a hike from Lincoln Park/Lake View, which is where I live.  However, Juan has been cutting my hair since before I moved to Chicago from Michigan, and he does such a nice job that I don't usually mind going out there every few months or so.  The salon is pretty expensive at $50 a cut plus tip, but coloring seems to be more reasonable.  The salon itself is very friendly -- the receptionist always greets me promptly and alerts Juan that I'm there.  The set up of the surrounding is very modern, but not too in-your-face trendy; the music isn't too loud or too crazy, so it's still a relaxing experience.

I have had short hair for most of my life, and avoid going to the salon as it always results in tears.

Never again! I had my hair cut by Nicole, who flies out regularly to work for modeling agencies in NY, and she did a beautiful job. I just left it completely up to her, and it is literally the best haircut of my life! She says that hair is her passion, and it really shows. She's not just a stylist, she's an artist!

i hate hate hate hate getting my hair cut.  i have very curly long hair [your jealous, i know] and each time i have gotten it cut the stylist does something that was not requested by me because they like my hair and think they can make it better.

same thing happened at gro.  i walked out of there with some ma joad grapes of wrath type hairstyle that i immediately put under a hat after i paid.  a few days later [i give haircuts a few days of me styling it to see if it works] i called the salon to express my dissatisfaction with the cut.  they offered to fix it, but i declined.

everyone was very nice but now, i cut my own hair.
