Review from John B.
I am sure there have been lots of Scotch-fueled fights in this place. The atmosphere is odd, and probably worked better when the world was bathed in a haze of cigarette smoke. I'm sure Utica's power brokers still gather here to discuss which historic buildings they're going to pave over next.
The food is institutional. I was not surprised.
When I ordered a UC, the bartender asked, "why you wanna do that to yourself, eh?" Which, in my opinion, was a boorish way for him to express his wish that I'd ordered a more expensive drink. -

We ate here because most places in Utica on Sunday are closed- The food was very good- the service? Our waitress was very high strung and strange...The house Merlot is excellent, although the house Chiati was far from good. I had the calamari for an appetizer/dinner-not a home run- and when served the waitress says"here is your calamari and you got a big portion here so don't expect that next time you come in" WTF? Anyhow it was served with a major ketchup cocktail sauce- I did not like it.I asked for marinara sauce halfway through the plate- better choice.
Other folks at our table ordered veal marsala and said good, mannocotti good and chicken francais- good- my son got chicken parm and not that great. Overall there are much better restaurants in Utica serving great Italian food and the service---the lady said she was gone for 6 months and now back- HMMMM.... -

This place gets 5 on the food, 3 on the service so it gets a 4. We have gone here every year the night before the Utica Boilermaker and the food is always really good, and the service has been pretty spotty the last few times. Still we'll keep going back because it is worth the hassle for the food.
The Grimaldi Greens are woth the visit alone. A mix of garlic, cheese, sauted greens, and I think possibly crack, makes me want to eat a whole bowl full. Since we are running the next day and are already overloading ourselves with saturated fat with the greens I usually get some of there great home made pasta with a simple sauce and maybe a meatball but I've tasted other peoples' dishes and they have always been good.
Never have had dessert there but based on everything else it is probably good, just may take you 30 minutes to get it! -

My very first utica dining experience was at Grimaldi's. I thoroughly enjoyed their fried calamari and greens grimaldi, although it was a little too hot for me. My linguini with white clam sauce was delicious as well. I also got to try their version of chicken riggies, but was not too impressed. It was tastier at Cafe Del Buono.

I have eaten here only a couple times. The food was always very, very good. They did a HUGE favor for us once: hosting a large at-the-last minute retirement party. (It had been booked, and then a disgruntled staff member cancelled it behind our backs!). They were fantastic!! Sent out free mini-pizzas while food was being prepped; later, the waitress told me the owners were in the kitchen cooking for us! Should go more often.

Guilderland, NY
Pretty disappointing. Utica's specialties are Chicken Riggies and Utica Greens. Grimaldi's take on both of these classics fell way short of expectations and comparison to other local haunts. Otherwise, atmosphere nice and service accommodating. Wouldn't go back. Too many other Utica Italian restaurants that do it better.

To be generous, it deserves 3 stars for effort. Only had lunch for three there, and it was okay, but not worth a detour off the NYS Thruway. Nice, old-fashioned bar, though. Ambiance is pleasant with some historical overtones as evidenced by the photo gallery going back through the years. Give it a shot if you are close by. We were told by the hotel concierge that it was the best downtown eatery open for lunch, and perhaps that's the case. Not much competition in Utica at that hour, unfortunately.
