This park is gorgeous, I didn't realize how close one could actually get to the HOLLYWOOD sign. The views from up there are undescribable - bring a camera if you can (I wish I had).  We hiked through the Observatory parking lot and kept going up. Eventually we were looking down at the Observatory, not to mention all the breathtaking pieces of real estate.....ahhh - one day, one day.....

Its a pretty decent climb - we were able to take the dogs (bring water for your pups please!!) and there were even some parts where they were able to be off leash! The trails were exceptionally clean (except for some horse shtuff but-eh-whatev) which is refreshing from others where land mines are known to turn your hike into an obstacle course
They were a handful of snobs who snorted when the dogs didn't understand traffic laws (stay on the right...oops) but you can shake those people off with a positive attitude so uh - I snort at you for not understanding that dogs don't understand traffic laws ;-p

I'm pretty athletic and after all the  I'm sore! I feel good, solid and rejuvenated. I recently decided that the bi or tri (ahem....) weekly trip to the beach I take on an almost frequent basis isn't enough exposure to be able to recognize the true natural beauty Los Angeles county has to offer. Deciding to go for a hike was an adventurous choice since Runyon is as wild as I get and I'm so glad I did!
I really look forward to hiking more and discovering new and even more challenging trails throughout LA....maybe one day - I could even be the adventurous type!

Hands down, best park in all of LA! I practically grew up in the park and I have such great memories of it from when I was young to when I was a teen to recently.

When I was a kid: I started riding my bike here with my dad when I was about 7. On top of that there's a carousel, swings and lots of places to run around. I hit my first golf ball here! They have a zoo that's so-so if you go when it's not 100 degrees outsides. I recommend spring or fall when the animals aren't hiding out.

The teen years: Great make out spots, cool places to walk around and hold hands, like the old zoo. You can even stand in the old, tiny cages and feel badly that you're human and have never had to live in a cage. Hiking was good too, after we got out of the cages. Be careful of how dry the ground gets in the summer. Once we found an old hidden garden that someone had planted after a fire in the 1970's. I doubt I'll ever find it again.

And now that I'm all growed up: My company has it's picnics in the open field next to the Autry Museum.

This place has everything!

I live so close to Griffith, why don't I come here more often? My excuses: it's so big and so intimidating and I didn't ever want to get lost, but after my first time hike last Saturday up to the observatory, it's not so bad. It does look easy to get lost though...

The hike was great, I went in the morning (8am) so it was cool and had plenty of shade (the sun didn't hit parts of the mountain yet). I was surprised at how steep it was. I didn't see an abundance of poop (like other yelpers had mentioned) but I DID see a woman whose Beagle  took a dump and she did NOT bother to pick it up! Where is Park Ranger Pineda when it counts??

I also saw lots of Korean people all geared up in their hiking clothes: robot-looking clear giant visors, walking sticks, hiking shoes, backpacks, you'd think they were off to see the wizard.

Parking was surprisingly scarce, maybe b/c it was a Saturday. But you have to go to Fern Dell and just park on the side of the road, although I did see a parking lot if you continue on Fern Dell. Next time I want to try that cute little restaurant/stand Trails. It's too cute.

Best quick hike... start at the entrance to the park on commonwealth and walk up to the dense forested grove of pine trees and sit on the benches overlooking the sprawling city.

An escape from urban life. From hiking to horseback riding. I was born in Hollywood and Griffith park and the Observatory only gives me fond memories. I think they still have the train you can take your kids on for a mini adventure through the woodsy environment. Take a nice bike ride through nature and wave to Bambi. Great place to have a picnic or serenade your loved one on your guitar. In one word Solace.

Great park.  There are parts of it that is like walking back in time.  So much of untouched Los Angeles.  So much to do there.  You can spend an entire day there for basically no money.  Great value.

For the sheer enormity of it and the many things that you can do here, the place gets a solid 4 stars.  The running tracks are great.  The early morning horseback riding is excellent.  The observatory is incredible.  Especially on a clear night.  The size of the park is also it's negative - it can be difficult to navigate and it's not always clear where exactly it is safe to park the car.  Sundays can be both fun and annoying - lots of families barbecuing, but then again lots of kids running around and getting in the way of you jogging or simply enjoying a little quite moment of communion with nature.

Ive been coming here on the daily to do my hiking workouts. Never again will I ever do cardio at the gym. Hiking never gets boring.

I usually start off at the Greek Theater, take a offroad hike up to the Griffith Park Observatory and occasionally run into wildlife animals such as deers, coyotes, and hawks. Thank god I have yet to run into rattlesnakes.

Then I get onto the next hiking trail only to climb some steep mountains while trying not to slip or you know what will happen, Game Over.

You want to talk about improving your conditioning? Try pushing your body to the limit while running up a mountain, as the air gets thinner due to the high elevation. Now thats a lung work out. Your legs will also be burning due to the incline of the mountains.

When you get to the very top, you can see all of Los Angeles, Burbank, and all the other neighboring cities. The view is nothing short from spectacular.

A tip for you first time hikers: Take it easy and get acquainted to nature before you start going on the off road hikes and climbing. Youll hurt yourself if you dont, trust me. Buy some hiking shoes if you think your going to go everyday, worth every penny.

Summer is here. You want to lose weight? Forget the gyms, Griffith Park will own your ass.

Griffith Park - oh how I love thee!  Great place to hike with a wide assortment of trails.  Not too far away from me in Downtown LA, but the park is far enough to make me feel that I am somewhere deep in nature.  There is nothing like melting your stress away with a nice hike with stunning views.  Especially on a full moon!  Night hikes are amazing.  Get off your butt and go there already!

It's 2:23 AM and I can't sleep because I am so flippin sore from my loooong hike at the Griffith Park today. Janani S. suggested a group of us get together and go for a "leisurely hike". Sure, I was down for a leisurely hike since I had never been hiking before. Uh little did I know I was going to be going up 30 degree inclines and scaling down mountains. WTF happened to leisurely. The trails aren't marked very clearly and the map sucks. We got lost about 10 times before we got on the right trail to the Griffith Observatory. I'm not even kidding, I  almost cried tears of joy when we finally got to our destination at the top!

Although I was expecting something completely different, I'm really glad I went! The workout I got was killer and I'm sure my ass will be sore for days. Definitely glad I went. The views are amazing! If you go to the top of Mt. Hollywood, you'll be able to see a 360 degree view of the city and the sad layer of smog that envelops it. I really love that in the middle of a hustling bustling city like LA there are places like Griffith Park. :)

What i like about Griffith is that with so many trails and little parking areas, you can do a completely different hike any given day.
However, i wouldn't really classify this as real "hiking."  It's more like walking along a very well defined path.  I would rate this a 2 out of 5 on difficulty.  There are plenty of little off-shoots that you can take, but they generally lead to another wide well-defined path.  I guess this makes it easy and accessible which is great, considering such a beautiful place can be kept in good ol' LA.  It's also dog friendly, but i keep Asahi (my dog) on a leash here.  Most of the other dogs on the trail are friendly, but people also mass-walk dogs here ( i guess because the trail is wide enough) and it's better to be safe than sorry =)

Overall its a great leisure hike with nice views and amenities (trash service, bench areas, etc.)

after the renovation of griffith park, a lot of new visitors have been visiting with the observatory and such. I enjoyed walking through the observatory. They have expanded greatly with another underground floor with the planet exhibits and fun facts. There is a cafe, restaurant, and gift shop nearby. Admission is free unless you want to watch the laser shows. Parking is a bit difficult as it is limited. I parked on the hill on the sidewalk, but I would recommend that you don't as there are a lot of parking enforcers driving up and down to give out tickets.

Griffith Park is one of those places that you can thank your lucky stars because it is practically in our backyards.  Its very rare to see such a large place as this in the middle of the city that has been left relatively untouched by human expansion.  You can catch wildlife running around the park  such as deer and coyotes.

Griffith Park is not all about the Greek Theater, the LA Zoo and the Griffith Observatory.  Aside from these attractions it's the wildlife and trails that are the jewel of this park.  You can choose a trail and hike up the hills and forget that you are in this fast paced city.  You can take a seat on the many rocks or benches that you see throughout the park and listen to the wind and birds or watch the hawks as they hover overhead looking for some food.  You'll catch a white tailed rabbit run across or see the countless squirrels going up and down the trees.  My favorite are the woodpeckers pecking on trees and watching the phoebes catching insects mid-flight.

Griffith Park has enticed me to pick up running again after a long absence.  I have now explored much of the park this way, and plan to keep exploring because there is so much to see.

Griffith Park is one of the reasons why I can't seem to move out of my apartment.  I can't give you up.  I pretend it's my own personal backyard.  If you're on a budget; a picnic, a hike, a ride on the bike, a run,  a trip to the zoo, a ride on the train and on a pony, for the little ones are at very reasonable prices if not free.

There's plenty of hiking trails here ranging from .25 miles to 4.5 miles, although it really is easy to get lost.  There's usually an organized night hike here.  Surf online for details.  Take a map with you or a compass...or stick a GPS somewhere, bring a charged cell phone just in case you need to scare a coyote with your obnoxious ring tone.

Find me running through the main trail most of the time with the little brown rabbits skipping along, while I avoid the Horse doo doos or riding my bike around carelessly...

Griffith Park -- another place I used to haunt as a kid, especially Fern Dell. In those days there wasn't graffitti and trash all over the place. It was quiet and almost deserted.

You MUST go to Fern Dell, especially if you can make it on a quiet weekday when the parking is better. Just lose yourself there. Take in the beauty of the ferns and flowers and listen to the brooks and waterfalls. You'll come out a new person.

It had been a long time since I was last in Griffith Park.  The Observatory gives you a nice view of Los Angeles on a clear day (which was the case today).  The outside is very nice and green (which is something of a rarity in a lot of areas in and around Los Angeles).  The interior holds many different exhibits to entertain the kids.

On the way out of Griffith Park, we saw a small wolf/coyote/feral dog wandering around (probably looking for food)...you don't see that everyday on the 405.

Hiking at griffith park is truly an amazing spectacle to be apart of. I still have trouble believing that this park even exists in the Los Angeles area. I went one day with some friends when the sun was setting and it is was one of the coolest experiences I've had in LA. When your hiking up the hill you can actually see all the gross smoggggggg just sitting in LA like a dirty bubble. But when you finally reach the top you can see the beautiful sky and smell the fresh air. And let me tell you it is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! great place for dates too.

Griffith Park is essentially the heart of LA. Businesses, traffic, and lives swarm frantically around it, yet once you get here, you are in a respite.

I have only dappled in the outskirts of this 4,200 acre park, but I must admit that I am already smitten with this place. My visits are typically afternoon jogs on the East-side trails running from the Pony Rides up to the Victory Blvd Bridge. There are usually plenty of other runners, dog walkers, bike riders, and occasionally horseback riders to wave to along the route, but it's those days that I find myself alone that I look forward to since they are usually the most memorable.

I was fortunate enough to have one of those days just yesterday... there was no one on the trail but me and I was working my way up a small incline which crests at an overlook of the 5 Fwy. I must have been in my zone because I suddenly noticed that I was no more than 5 feet from a Red-Tailed Hawk perched on the railing. I froze, hoping not to scare him off, but it was too late. He spread his wings and glided over to a thicket of trees across the road.

With the anonymity that is perpetual in this City of Angels, Griffith Park always shows you in unique ways that there are still moments in this world that were only meant for you.

** As of January 27, 2009, Griffith Park is officially a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument! **

I agree with Armen, we need more parks. One problem though, the State is broke. Another reason? We have crazy residents who will never allow for another park to be built. But for Griffith Park, I love this place. I train here for my marathons & triathlons. I haven't seen all the routes yet but I usually enjoy my run from the LA Zoo, through Eckert Trail and into the Hollywood sign. One way is approximately 6.5 miles. We are many years behind any other city. We have so much sprawl. Everyone lives in their nice big homes that at the most has 2 stories. Of course there would be no more room to build another park. Look at NYC or SF or even a place like Portland. They have such nice walkable cities and beautiful parks. What do we have? Fast cars, Gucci purses & racist bigots who think that transit & parks will draw Mexicans into their neighborhood. I'm ashamed to be an Angeleno.

According to Wikipedia Griffith Park covers 4,210 acres (6.58 square miles) and is one of the largest urban parks in North America.  How cool is that?! The LA Zoo, Greek Theater, Autry National Center, Griffith Observatory, Travel Town, Mount Lee (the Hollywood Sign), all fall within Griffith Park. You can also golf, hike, swim, bike, or run. Trying to imagine LA without Griffith Park is depressing. Tip: don't feed the squirrels with your lips, I learned that the hard way.

Griffith Park is the main reason why I stay in Los Feliz.
The observatory renovation is beautiful. My boyfriend and I go up there evenings to take photos and relax. It's a great escape from the city. There are so many hiking trails and sometimes there is no one else there! Really peaceful compared to crowded hiking - that doesn't make sense to me. There are a few great private picnic spots that showcase a gorgeous view of the city. Excellent for an evening picnic and great views for watching the sunset.

Griffith Park is one of the coolest places in all of Los Angeles.  The park has something for everyone including the Observatory, the Greek Theatre, tons of hiking and biking trails, pony rides, a train, and an annual wet t-shirt contest.  Wait a minute, is that true?  I'm not sure.  They should though.  That would be great. I would definitely go to the park more if they had that.  Also, watch out for wild animals in the park.  Last time I was here I punched a dolphin.

There is more to Griffith than meets the eye. Check out the back side (NE side, enter from Los Feliz @ I-5), there are less-visited trails back there, the abandoned zoo (park by carousel, go uphill), a steep climb to a fenced-off bluff.

On the normal (south) side, there's the lower trails with nice views, the Observatory, and if you go up from the Obs parking, an epic 360 view. Also there's a hidden horse ranch (not the NE one) and other trails to the west.

I thought I saw an old quarry carved out of a hill once on the SWesterly side, I haven't checked it out yet.

Good place, more faraway views than Runyon, but less mobbed.

A while ago I wrote a review of Runyan Canyon Park where I gave it 4 stars and implied that it could have gotten 5.  That was because I honestly thought that RCP was as good as it gets out here in Hollyhood, and it was 4 or 5 stars relatively speaking.

Well fuck all that.  RCP is now 3 stars at best.  Griffith Park is where it's at.

My friend dragged me up at 7 AM on a Saturday and told me to get on my bike, which had sat in my closet untouched since I moved to Hollywood 8 months ago.  The 15-minute ride from my apartment to the park entrance was absolutely terrifying.  LA is not a good place for bicycling, especially in Hollywood.  Even at 7 AM I often feared for my life.  But once I got to the park, it was all worth it.  We had the WHOLE PARK TO OURSELVES.  While you can't get a moment of solitude at RCP unless there's a rainstorm, here, on a beautiful spring morning, there was nobody to be seen.  There are about 7 large hills in Griffith Park (from what I understand) and I managed to climb about 2.5 of them before I was near death.  Oh, I'm kind of out-of-shape, I should mention.  If you're not, you'll really love this place even more than I do, and that's saying a lot, as you see that I gave it five stars.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE GRIFFITH PARK!

I always come here during the summer and winter breaks. Also, whenever people visit me from the east coast, I always take them to Griffith Park to see the Hollywood sign and the city (and the smog).

I hike here all the time and love the many different paths the park has.  It's not hard to find a secluded trail or to follow any of the trails.  Parking is free and quite convenient.  I really wish we had more parks like this in LA.

Yay for the starting point of the National AIDS Marathon Training program! I come every Sunday morning to run with my pace group and yet I never really get to discover the park itself because we hardly ever run through it.  But, I'll tell you what I like about it from what I know. I like how it's a beautiful bit of nature in the middle of cosmopolitan LA. I like how Crystal Springs Road is a great connector from Forest Lawn Drive to the 5 or 134 freeway (Yay for short cuts and dodging traffic). Lastly, I find the Smoky the Bear sign saying "Today's Risk for Fire: HIGH" to be extremely amusing. Rarely is it ever "LOW".

What I don't like is that there are specifically marked bike lanes, but no runner's lane. Boo to that.

I love this frickin' park.

I go here about four times a week.

About a month ago, I was running up a trail on the
east side of the park; I was minding my own business
when a bobcat crossed the trail in front of me.

I was amazed, exhilarated, scared!

He looked at me as if to size me up. I guess he decided it would have been too much work to take me down--so he just took off up the untrailed part of the hill, back into the wild.

I have had many encounters with other wild life in Griffith Park too: coyotes, deer, snakes, squirrels.  A friend of mine was hiking at 5:30 AM and claims he saw a mountain lion.  Who needs the zoo?

I love this park.

So, every morning as I cruise ominously toward work in Hollywood, I go down Los Feliz Boulevard to where it bends and turns into Western Avenue. Right on that corner is a small grassy patch of Griffith Park with a sculpture of explorer Leif Erikson, holding it down for the vikings. I've seen families play soccer there, have picnics, take naps. Maybe it's a lazy man's recreation area for those too lackadaisical to walk all the way into the park. A place for a quickie street-side frolick.

Anyway, every morning just before 9, (or after, if I'm late -- forgive me, boss), I see this middle aged Caucasian man with a ponytail hunker down on the grass next to Leif with a newspaper, his backpack, and some breakfast nibbles. Bare feet, flip flops kicked off, usually shorts. Thick rimmed glasses. Kind of a progressive hippie vibe, you know, like a San Franciscan. Sometimes he's peeling fruit (organic or homegrown, I imagine) or chowing on trail mix like a hungry monkey. He unwittingly throws a finger to the Man as he lounges until he's damn good and ready. A slow, relaxing ritual to start his day, everyday. And everyday I think the same thing: I wish I was you right now, mister.

(Do these pathetic vicarious reviews count?)

I've been coming here even before I started walking. Beautiful park in the middle of Los Angeles. It's very big, has many beautiful hikes with great views, running/bike paths, a carousel, fields, bbq areas, a small train, observatory and pony rides for the kids.

There are always birthday parties here and everybody comes out no matter what time of day it is. I've had a few parties here when I was younger, I've used to ride the ponies and loved the fast ones. The train ride goes along the park and is a fun thing to do at least once. I took my dog on it once! They don't allow pets anymore because of a freakish incident, so I here. One section has an area for handicap children called Shane's Inspiration. I think this is a wonderful thing.

As for the hikes, I used to go on Dante's Peak before the fire. Not as beautiful as it used to be unfortunately. But there still lots of hikes scattered with great views of LA and downtown.

The observatory is beautiful too. A romantic date or fun outing to check out the stars. You can hike to it if you're up to it. Not too hard but a good workout. Watch out for the coyotes. I've seen them roam around lately. There is a big area for picnics, tons of grass to play frisbee, walk your dog, and relax.

This is a LA must whether you're a native or a visitor. Do not miss this!

Awesome place to hike..

Well not really hike, more like waling.

I showed up one beatiful sunday morning with all the water and everything.. except im wearing.... flip flop.

damn!!

oh well, i thought, wouldn't b that bad. I been through worse before.

Anyways, 3 of us start walking along the trail, and the whole time my flip flop keeps up with every1, so i would say its just more like a hangout, walking through the park.

But beware of horse.... manure. lots and lots of them.

you can spend abour 4 hour in the park and get to the hollywood sign, take some touristy pix, and be proud that u are at the heart of LA. :D

Def a go back for me, but i need to check out the Griffith Observatory next time.

The only place I got a ticket for having an open container. When I say the park police jumped out of the bushes, they seriously jumped out from behind bushes.
I thought the red solo cup would throw them off. But it didn't. It was lunch on Halloween and I was with a bunch of Hispanics. Shake em down cops!
Aside of almost having to pay a fine (the cop didn't show for court) it's a very nice park with a lot to do. Great hiking, great places for a photo or two. Just be careful when it comes to drinking.

You'd never expect that you'll find a large piece of nature in the middle of Los Angeles.

Griffith Park, the location of random wild fires and also the spot for a history lesson. Hidden behind the urban myth that dark rituals are practiced in the hills at night lies the urban exploration of seeing the Old Zoo, a sight that would make you wonder how humane it was to keep animals there. Not to mention provide a much needed spooky spot to check out.

The park has been the spot for filming from TV shows to films. I have been on a couple of film shoots that made the park look like it was a light house in Florida. Which... I don't know how they pulled it off, but they did.

There's a Carousal that is great for kids, as well as a couple of train spots that will make any little boy weep for joy in how loud the choo chooing is.

There's tennis courts that are on a first come, first serve bases. So you can get your swing on. Golf course there is also great if you fancy your stroking practice.

Not even touching on the Greek, The Observatory and the Hollywood sign. All landmarks that anyone and everyone should visit and see up close. Truly an experience.

The park is closed after sunset, but you can always take a night drive through it. It's like going 100 miles from civilization without actually wasting all that gas.

Oh yeah, The festival of lights is held here every year. So if you want to be stuck in two hour traffic seeing a half mile of Christmas lights, then it's your funeral.

Other wise, Griffith Park has it all and makes an excellent weekend adventure. There's plenty of BBQ pits to grill to your desire and families can be seen hanging out here spending quality time.

I give this place a solid five for all those reasons and the most important one..... HIKING.

I love the hiking trails here. They can range from the really easy to the extreme. It's great for getting out and being active.

Though the only thing I would advise is what Heather G. Pointed out. There is a bit of a prescience from the gay community looking to be.. a little out goingin their... um.. yeah. So watch out for those areas.

I go to this park 3x/week to work out because it is on my way home from work. I do a lot of hiking + jogging hoping to trail run it all one day once I build my stamina. Like a true Virgo, I'll give you precise location of where to park should you like to experience the same hikes as me:
If I'm coming from work (UCLA), I'm taking the 405N to the 101S to the 134E and exit on Zoo Drive and drive on it towards the ZOO (=south if you're looking at a map) till it says "Merry-go-round parking" where I turn right and park almost immediately before another right turn where the official Merry-go-round parking is. You'll see a trail beginning to your left, it's easy to spot it because there is a green sign to put your dog on a leash with a picture of a dude with a dog. This is a beginning of the Lower Beacon Trail that usually takes me an hour to hike and will bring you back to your car through a loop. You should pick up a copy of the Griffith Park's trails available at the visitor's center which is 5 minutes away from you if you walk south (=down) from your parked car. (You can google the Visitor's center, it'll point you in the right direction). The map is a photocopy and I scoffed at it first, but somehow it turns out to be a pretty precise rendering of what you'll find once you'll hike all the trails in GP.
Another trail that I do starts at the end of the Commonwealth Canyon Drive in Los Feliz. Let's say you're taking the 5N, exit on Los Feliz Blvd, turn left (=going West), and make a right on Commonwealth Ave and drive all the way to its end. Park on the right side of the street and follow the paved fire road for about 5 min till you'll see another sign with a dude and his dog on a leash - this is the entrance to the Hogback trail. You'll come to a fork and you want to go right. It'd help if you had your xerox copy of the trails from the Visitors' Center that I was mentioning earlier to know exactly what I mean. The Hogback trail will take you all the way up to Dante's View where you can see the LA in all its glory (on a clear day ;-))
If you have any parking questions whatsoever or questions about the trails' level of difficulty, please email me!!! I'll be glad to help!
As far as the scenery, It's all right; the trails are very well maintained so you can do some really good running/joggin but since I come from a country with beautiful forests I'm not too thrilled about the LA chaparral. Don't expect a nature scene that will take your breath away...
I give this place 5 stars for the awesome cardio, soft trails, free parking and accessibility.

Once upon a time, there was this beautiful park by the name of Griffith. It was a land of greenery, good times and fresh air.

Cut to three years later...

Closet gay househusbands have converged on said park, making it a hotbed of afternoon delight for those who are same-sex oriented.

Translation: Stick with the garden section at Home Depot. It feels less like an episode of Dateline's "To Catch a Predator" than this park does.

***** My Favorite Spot in Los Angeles

This place cleanses my spirit and soul each and every time I climb the mountain.  At one point a few years back, I was able to climb the mountain 2x a day.  The views, the animals passing by, the sound of the dirt and sand crunching under my shoes, the ability to be above the smog, a true bird's eye view of the city of Angels and the "country" feel drive up and down to the spot.  Life is better with Griffith Park and Hiking in my life.

This is a great place to go and be alone or take a friend and it's all free.

Get up there and let yourself free.

Onward.
