Finally, a mechanic that I can trust.  I had gotten my oil changed by one of those $19.99 places and of course, they gave me a huge list of things that were "wrong" with my car, adding up to roughly $300.  I took the list to Griffin's Auto based on Yelp reviews and asked them to check it out.

They told me I didn't need most of those things, and they actually found something that was wrong with my car that nobody else had noticed - some cylinder thing had ripped and they said that's why it was hard to change gears.  I paid a fair price for the work and felt like they saved me money not only on unnecessary replacements like the oil change place had told me to do, but they saved me money in the long run by catching something bad that would have caused more damage.

Not to mention, they are in the heart of Little Italy so while they did the repairs (they were done in a couple hours!!) I did my shopping and got to peruse the neighborhood.  Not like being stuck out in Kearny Mesa or something with nothing to do.

    Check them out!

Groupon got me here. Their amazing service will definitely bring me back!

Got an oil change and enjoyed their nice-and-cool waiting room. Their staff was awesome and they've since sent me recommended services as well as discount coupons via mail/email.

Definitely a GREAT and trustworthy garage!!!

Where do I even begin with this place....

First, they are only open during the weekdays, not Saturday or Sunday ( I assumed not Sunday). They are open till 5 but only take appointments until 3 and the last appointment that can be scheduled is supposedly until 2 or 2:30. So basically this place only services unemployed and retired people. I asked them how long it would take them to do an oil change and they said it would take an hour or up to two hours. REALLY??? It takes that long for a f'n oil change??? I've never been to a place that has taken that long unless its super busy or crowded there.

And its interesting to see how reviews for this place has either 1 star or 5 stars...weird.

Notice that most of the reviews are either 1 star or 5? Kinda fishy...and the only positive you see is their location. But anyway...please read on.

    HORRIBLE! Horrible, horrible, horrible.

I was a little skeptical after reading some of the reviews here but I had a Groupon and figured I'd try it. How hard could an oil change be? I could not have been more wrong. Only open 8-5...and I work 8-5 so...um? Brought it in on MLK Day and the guy barely said anything to me except for the fact that the Groupon only covered a certain amount of oil so I'd have to pay more. Ohhh, gotta love the fine print. In about an hour it was done which was nice but when I go to sign and pay they quote me for a new water pump (around $700) which caused some confusion. I find out later why......I had my water pump replaced like a year ago. Leaking already? Really?

So I say thanks and that I'll look into it. Now today, two days later, theres some noise coming from under my hood that never happened before. For real? So now I'm taking my car into my real mechanic (John's Automotive) to see if they can fix whatever Griffin's Auto Repair did.

Needless to say I will NEVER be returning.

    Blake Griffin owns this place!!!

Just kidding. It is a slam-dunk though if you need an oil change and are in the vicinity of downtown. I got mine done the other day and the fellas behind the counter were really great helping me out even without an appointment.

They hooked it up lickety split while I was able to get some work done at a nearby coffee shop. All it took was leaving my phone number and they gave me a call when it was complete. Two hours later and my baby was purring with some new synthetic inside of her.

It seemed a tad more expensive then what I've been used to in the past, but it was a small price to pay for the premium stuff, and a friendly location so it'll be my go to from now on.

I recently took my 2004 Pontiac Aztek in for its annual check-up and was absolutely delighted with the service!  Having moved here from Texas, I knew I would need a dependable place to take care of my car and was even told by one of their vendors that I had come to the best place in San Diego which I found very comforting.  I am delighted and could not recommend them any higher.  Now I just gotta let my friend Rudy at Rudy's Automotive back in San Marcos, Texas know the "Beatlemobile" is still in good hands.  Thank you very much!

Super convenient since I live nearby, but not happy with the service.  I brought my car in because it was making a strange noise.  Got a call back later that day with a reasonable estimate to fix the problem, along with a suggestion to fix something else with the car.  I just wanted the initial noise problem fixed and didn't inquire about their suggestion.  I told them to go ahead and fix it, but apparently he took this to mean, yeah, do everything.

So when I go in to pick up my car and pay my initial estimate of less than $100, I'm presented with a bill for over $350.  Maybe this is my fault for not being clear?  I don't know.  But when I told the guy, no, I didn't say to go ahead and do the other work, he just didn't seem to care.

He agreed to take off $30, and never apologized.  I don't think the guy cared whether or not I came back or not, which you would think as a first-time customer he would.  It just seemed shady, and I didn't leave with a good feeling about the whole situation.  Oh, and that noise, it came back the very next day.

I got the $14 groupon and used it today. Had to pay another $5 for taxes and disposal cost which i was kinda bummed about but Oh Well. Still a pretty cheap oil change. It took an hour to do which i was kinda surprised about but the thing about it is I have no reason to go back. I guess I've been spoiled after  going to Boulevard Automotive in PB where you get such great customer service. I got my oil changed but will most likely never be back.

And If you need a mechanic, go to boulevard automotive...Trust me!

I live about 4 blocks from this place and brought it here out of more convenience then anything. Had a pretty bad coolant leak on Caddy Escalade ..

Aside from the high prices, which I could not really dispute given the problem at hand .. The guy at the desk was very knowledgeable, courteous and professional. He highlighted the root cause of my problem, outlined what was necessary and what was not and had me on my way.

I know everyone wants major mechanic work for cheap prices, but the reality is you get what you pay for! .. This place is awesome and have a proven track record.

My car was making some crazy funky noises and I chose to take it to Griffin's because of the good Yelp reviews and the close proximity to my apartment. Wow, was I disappointed.

First of all, WAY overpriced. Charged a lot just to diagnose the car (which didn't take them very long to do). The repair price they quoted me was outrageous. Now, I know that sometimes cars need repairs that cost a lot of money. However, the price Griffin's quoted me was insanely high compared to the six other car places I called for a quote. In fact, the next highest price I found was $220 LESS than the Griffin's price.

The worst part was when I went to pick my car up. It's an awkward situation when you don't get the repairs done at the place that diagnosed it, but I was very polite and thanked them for what they did. However, the dudes that were pretty nice when I first came in gave me some MAJOR attitude and aggressively questioned  my choice to leave, basically treating me like a stupid girl incapable of making decent decisions.

The shop dog was majorly cute but definitely didn't make up for the rude jerks working there.

So this place would be like the equivalent to your dad opening up an auto garage repair shop. By this I mean the garage was a garage, not a gay hair salon garage full of fruitcakes who need hugs, but a I want a pizza with broken glass and live grenades kinda garage.

They didnt try to kiss my ass, they knew I didnt know shit about cars; so they didnt BS me with the mechanic talk.  Best of all, I said thanks and I got the man nod.  If you are a real man, you know men dont say your welcome.  They give you this nod like...what the fuck homo did you really just thank me?

So in one day they got my car back up and running.  Never bothered to go into detail as to what they fixed as they knew my gay ass would just stare at them and nod and grunt like I was an actual man.  They did break everything down in detail on the reciept and the pricing seemed fair, but what the fuck do I know.

Anyways, about a day later, they followed up with a phone call making sure I was satisfied with their work and if I was experiencing any problems...and well...I felt loved....

like the kinda feeling of love you get after your dad kicks your ass and sends you to your room, then calls you down to eat and watch the football game...

    ! :-)

2 weeks  in the garage is two weeks too long for my Sexy Betch.

It happend one evening while driving home from work. Like a skinny bitch in 6 inch Manolo's, I blew a tire! GASP! Sexy Betch was road kill on the runway from hell (southbound on Interstate 5.)  Luckily she was still able to ease me onto the side of the road....

1 low profile tire later, I was told there was a NOTIFICATION recall.

QUESTION:  What the f_ck is that?

ANSWER:  A recall that the Audi company won't pay for but is ordered by the court to send out notifications..

(lame ass sucking if you ask me.)

Her timing belt was frayed.. HUH?!!!  Who believes the dealers? Not me. A new battery and 4 mos later. Again I was told by another dealer my timing belt was bad. Well, we all know what that means on an Audi TT Quattro. You either fix it now.... or get a new engine when it blows!

    AAAAHHHHHHH!    Not my Sexy Betch!

So I did what any techno saavy Sexy Betch loving individual would do... I PAAAAANICKED.... and then went online... (I wasn't about to trust a dealership)... Yelp reviews told me Griffin's Auto Repair did a fantastic job... even on import cars like my Sexy Betch. I was told they were clean, reputable, fast, and reliable.. Not a single negative word about them.

I'd gotten 4 estimates already, did a couple of hours of online whoring, and after hearing what Marshall at Griffins had to say, It behooved me to bring my car in for his FREE estimate. 3 hours later, I get a call and a quote... not much farther from his initial quote on the phone,  and VERY competitive to others I've gotten estimates from (he knew his stuff.)

After a quick conversation at home, I gave Marshall the go ahead. By 5:00 pm that same day my car was ready to go. Only one extra belt was necessary, and all the extras (thermostats, thermometers,  suspension coils...) that the dealership suggested -- TOTALLY unnecessary! No nonsense is what I get from Griffin's Auto Repair (just like all the reviews say). They'll look at the car, and suggest only what needs done. Trust me, other places tried to sell me more.

Marshall stayed later so I can pick up my car after hours. And even installed my tail light GRATIS. What a cool guy! I appreciate the honesty, knowledge and reasonable prices Griffin's offers.

THEIR COMPETITION EVEN GAVE THEM A GREAT REVIEW!
    What more can I say?

Now I have my Sexy Betch back.. and as promised I will think about getting her some new shoes as well.  "Betch needs to be back on the street earning me some $$$.. she aint no good in the garage!"

Griffin's Auto Repair doesn't just come recommended by me.. Apparently their competitors agree that they do good work. Now that's a great endorsement.

Quality  *  Experience  *  Knowledge  *  Reasonable Prices
A good job goes along way, so I  will be sure to recommend this place to others.

I give this Auto Repair Shop 5 WOOFS and a parking lot peee! I won't go anywhere else. I'M GRIFFIN'S BITCH NOW! ;-P

(Addendum: they called to see how my car was running 5 days later and told me how they appreciated my business.. That's a Class "A" shop right there!)

My go to spot to get honest, reliable auto work done. They are CLOSE to my house, but even if they weren't, I'd still come here.
Took my car in recently and they inspected it from top to bottom. Suggested things that needed to be replaced and showed my why. No pressure sales going on here. Just good work at good prices by friendly people.

I think these guys are very nice, but make sure you shop their prices.  Hoehn Audi beat Griffin's quote by $400 for full kit timing belt replacement and fuel pump.  Griffin also said I needed a thermostat replacement for $500.  Hoehn said, no, the thermostat was only $40 because they were already working in that area of the car.  Hoehn tested the thermostat and said it didn't need replacing at all!  So $400 saved on work done, plus $500 saved on bogus thermostat replacement = I could have been out an extra $900 had I gone with Griffin instead of Hoehn!

Edit: I should have updated my review on this a long time ago, but life happens. After hearing an unusual noise coming from under my car (a 2000 Honda Prelude) and noticing a difference in handling, I brought my car in here about a year and a half ago, and I was told it would cost almost $60 just to take a look at my car. Being short of options at the time I took it, and they told me nothing was wrong, but I also had them do the periodic maintenance (180K miles) at the same time. That ended up costing me around $400, which isn't bad, but I'll come back to that in a little bit.

I took the car to a different shop (Firestone on B Street), and they showed me the sheared bushing and broken knuckle joint I had been driving around on for several hundred miles. That was replaced, and everything was all good with the car again, until the engine threw the timing belt a month and a thousand miles later. The belt was supposed to have been checked at the routine maintenance, but because Griffin had obviously not done the maintenance properly, my Prelude's engine was now a very expensive piece of scrap aluminum.

For one more experience, I asked Griffin for an estimate for a clutch and throwout bearing replacement, and was quoted a price of well over $1000. The throwout bearing is *part* of the clutch assembly, and the Honda dealership quoted that same replacement for less than $600. Let me repeat that. The dealership, usually the bastion of overpriced repairs, quoted me more than $400 cheaper than Griffin.

Bottom line: do yourself a favor and stay away. A cute dog does not a good repair shop make.

"A lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part."

This is the sign that hangs on the wall of my office, which I point to every sub that comes crying about this, that and the other.

Lucky for me, No such sign hangs on the walls of Griffin's!

Each and every time I call, usually noon on Friday, "Can you squeeze me in today?"

"No problem, just bring it by, and we'll have it done by 4."

Added bonus, the nice walk through Little Italy back to the office!

Very good shop. Honest, friendly people and they do good work for a fair price. Unlike the dealership service center, you feel like you can talk to these guys and they give you personal attention instead of treating you like a number. They did an air conditioner repair for me in record time (like 2-3 hours which included removing/reinstalling the compressor). If you're downtown, go to them!

I did not see the dog, so they only get 4/5 stars.

Because Griffin's is close I brought my car in a few times but was always disappointed. I don't know much about auto repair so I gave them the benefit of the doubt until I finally caught them trying to cheat me.

My battery died on my M. Benz so I called them to get a quote. They told me it would cost $374 plus tax to replace it. I asked why so expensive for a battery, he said it was an AC Delco and that they would have to reset the computer in the car afterwards....1 hour and 45 minutes of labor. I thought it was high so I called Mercedes Benz of San Diego, they came out to where my car was parked, replaced my battery and told me there was never a need to reset the computer after dropping in a new battery if you do it right....he re-set my clock! Took 30 seconds! I paid $140 total.

Also, the last time I took my car in to Griffin for an oil change, it leaked oil severely so I called them to ask why. They said there must be something else wrong with the car and to bring it in. My car has never leaked anything from the day I bought it but poured after the oil change. Ends up the oil filter wasn't tightened. They finally owed up to it and fixed it but I was leery of there professionalism after that. Now I am convinced they are out to make high dollars for simple repairs and are not honest in their dealings with me.

The first time I took my car in they came back with over $3,000 in repairs that they say I needed which were unrelated to what I brought it in for. Since then, I asked the dealer about these supposed repairs and they said they can't find or duplicate them. Huh....

Griffin's has been servicing my car for 3 years.  Everyone I know uses Griffin's and loves them: my fiance, my old roommate, my boss, my co-workers, my friends etc.  Our cars range from SUVs to econ cars to sports cars.  Any type of car, we trust Griffin's fully.

It's a family shop and they are nice, clean and trust-worthy.   I get all my oil changes and check-ups here and they know other trust worthy people for things like new tires, windshields, auto body, etc.

I was just there yesterday to take my car and my fiance's truck in to get our regular oil change and check up.  My fiance's car also had a crack in the windshield.  Abraham, the son, called his windshield guy and within a few hours, we had the cars serviced, and a new windshield!  All for great prices too!

I will never take my car anywhere else.

Griffin's Auto Repair - Fair, Professional
    & Polite

My 1996 Sebring had developed a mysterious rattle in the area of the air conditioner, so I took my car to Griffin Auto Service. We road tested the car & found that the rattle was behind the glove compartment. It took about one hour to road test, find the problem & fix it. Still, they told me they wouldn't charge me for that repair.

If you're looking for professional, top notch mechanics, fair & polite, see Abraham Chavez, the service manager at Griffin's Automotive Service Shop - 1542 State St, San Diego, Ca 92101 or call (619)-399-3020. You can also check their web site at http://griffinsautorep...

I brought my '84 911 in  to Griffin's to check out the A/C system which was only blowing warm air.  Griffin's checked my system, filed it with dye and gas, told me their work was guaranteed and charged me almost $300 to "fix it".  I brought the car back in a month later for them to check the dye to see if there were any leaks and they said everything was good. Within another month the temperature of the air started getting less cold suggesting to me that the gas was leaking out. Within 6 months the system was only blowing warm air.

When I brought it back and complained that the A/C was not working  and expected them to warranty their work they "rechecked" my car, told me all the gas had leaked out because  there were a lot of pin hole size leaks throughout all the hoses and it would now cost me an additional $3,000 to replace all the hoses plus the evaporator and compressor. They refused to warranty their work or even refund my money.

I went to Stanco Automotive for a second opinion and they were fabulous. It turns out that Griffin's did not even replace several caps that were leaking gas continuously and the major reason why the gas leaked out.

did the job for a fraction of the cost and specialty is AC, air conditioner for cars. They made my BMW cool again and pumping cold air. Didn't try to rip me off or sell me more then what I needed in service. Did the job on time as agreed. Plus they gave me a loaner car for the day A+.

    Original Review:
Just had my first experience with Griffin's, a big 90k mile service.  I can say that everything about the experience was great.  The people were knowledgeable, pleasant, helpful, and inspired confidence in you.  The cost was reasonable, and overall the experience was one that I wouldn't mind repeating next time I need car service.

    Updated Review:
After about 8 times through, I feel that the prices crept up.  I had problems with ALL 3 or 4 times I did a night drop off.  They never checked for the keys that I dropped through the night drop slot, and they did not check phone messages stating that my car was parked down the street.  Every time I did a night drop, I had to call them again the following day to make sure they knew my car was waiting, and they never knew.

The last service in had two problems.
1 - When done, they told me that the vehicle pulls to the left.  They said that I needed an alignment, but they don't provide the service, so I should go elsewhere for that.  The next day, I checked the tire pressures.  The front left tire as 15psi.  I added air and guess what?  The car didn't pull to the left any more.
2 - They replaced my wiper blades without asking.  This violates CA state law.  $30 to replace wiper blades.  I could have done that in 5 minutes for $12.  I know I could complain and get my money back, but I'd just rather not go back and prefer to spread the word.

That was my final visit.   I liked them very much at first, but got soured on the experience.  We'll see if the new shop does any better.

I had been here in the past with my Audi, they charged hundreds less than the dealership quoted and were quick with repairs. The other day, I was leaving my building in Little Italy and saw a large bolt sticking out of the tire on my Montero. My husband had the Audi and I was on my way to take my son to an emergency dr's appt. I had to be in Mira Mesa in 25 minutes. I stopped by the shop to see if they could help me because it sounded awful and I was afraid that it would go flat. Marshall fixed my tire in 5 minutes at no charge. I made it to the appt. on time My Audi is back in there right now for new spark plugs. I should be picking it up this afternoon. I am sure that the work will be great.

Griffin's is amazing. Abraham and Marshall are 100% honest, 100% knowledgeable and 100% helpful. We have a Subaru with 97,000 miles and got a 90k overhaul and checkup last January. Since then, we only take our car to Griffin's. This sounds a bit cliche, but they really do 'care' about their customers and the cars. I can't say enough good things about Griffin's. Also, Sancho (the resident canine mascot) is another huge plus :)

I have been here a few times and have left disappointed each time.  "Why do you keep going back," you must be wondering?  Well, it is one block away from my apartment, and I am a fool for convenience.  The last time I was in, I totally felt the "you're a stupid little girl, so we're going to take you for a ride" vibe, which, honestly, I just don't dig.  They also quoted me a price for a service that was so outrageous, even the Audi dealership quoted $200 lower!!  Lame sauce, I tell you!  Anyway, now I am in desperate need of someone to fix my poor-old-hooptie, and since these turds were so turd-like, I must venture out of my Little Italy bubble--much to my chagrin.

ME: "Hi, can I get a quote on an oil change for my car?

DUDE @ COUNTER: Points at prices on the counter. Sign says $37

    ME: "Deal!"

    DUDE: "What kind of car?"

    ME: "1988 Mercedes 300E"

    DUDE: "Oh, thats $120."

    ME: "Thats why I asked...."

DUDE: "I cant fit you in today anyway."

I don't like the condescending attitude that is followed by proof that my question was valid to begin with... Griffins, STAY AWAY! This place is conveniently located and that is about it.

I've brought my BMW 3 to this shop for repairs a few times. They're fair and they explain things well. I brought my car in with my  "check enigine" light on. It turns out that I didn't have my gas cap tight enough. They reset the light, told me what was wrong, and didn't charge me. These guys are great!

These guys were super nice, gave me an appt. right when I needed it, even drove me home while they checked my car out.  It was ready an hour before they said it would be, and were reasonably priced.  I will be going back!

I found out about Griffins through this sight actually, and they had alot of positive reviews so I thought I'd give them a shot. I had a problem with my car that I had put off too long, and they were close to where I work as well so it made it very convenient. I dropped off my car in the morning, and they gave me a ride to work in my own car so that they could also get a feel for the problems my car was having. They dropped me off at work, and fixed the problem before the end of the day at a very fair price, and they will also give a 10% discount if you mention you are on http://yelp.com. I have already referred a friend there. I will be back, hopefully not too often though, lol.
