Rich is amazing, professional and quick. My laptop crashed and I was expecting the worst in needing to re install programs. Nope, Rich was talented enough to save all of my data, got me a faster Hard drive and fixed my cd disc tray that was bent. All in all it was around or less than 24 hours. AMAZING! I CAN NOT STRESS HOW GREAT RICH IS! I will be going to this guy every time now. Not to say other places are not good its just that Rich is very thorough and has very accommodating hours 2-9pm. I dont know any other lap top technician like that.
I 100% recommend Rich for all your PC needs.
I called Rich about a problem I had with my laptop after reading all these rave reviews on Yelp. He called me back promptly and calmly talked me through my problem.
While he wasn't able to personally help me with my problem, I greatly appreciated his demeanor. He even recommended some other businesses who might be able to work with me on fixing my laptop, which was going beyond the call of duty.
I'll definitely call Grey Matter again.
I recently came in to have my laptop keyboard after spilling juice all over it. I explained to him the problem and he quickly ordered me a new laptop keyboard within a day. He also kept me updated with the shipping information/ prices ( He explained to me how he searched to get the best deal for a new keyboard when I went in to have it replaced). Rich was also very knowledgeable and explained to me the various parts of the keyboard and how it's exactly put together as he opened my laptop, cleaned it up, and put in the new keyboard.
Overall, I paid 24$ with shipping for the laptop keyboard (which he ordered for me) and another 8$ to have it installed. I was very impressed at the customer service and small price I had to pay at the end of it! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
After seeing the great reviews on Yelp, I called Rich to schedule an appointment to come in and have my DC jack repaired for my laptop. After I arrived at his place, Rich helped me for about 5 minutes, and then he told me I had to leave because he had a lot to get done and rushed me out of his place. I was so rushed I had to return to his place to get my laptop power cords. This was totally rude and unacceptable. He told me he didn't recommend having someone repair my laptop because of the age of the laptop. Anyway, I purchased a brand new laptop, but I will never recommend or go back to him with my new laptop if I have problems because he didn't seem to want to give me the time of day. This is not a good business practice to earn the business of long-term customers.
Rich is amazing! I dropped my netbook (Samsung N120) on Saturday afternoon and cracked the screen and since it's my owly computer and I can't afford a new one, I was very, very sad.
I looked up Yelp reviews and found Rich - and he's every bit as friendly and great to deal with as everyone else says. I'm on a super tight budget so the fact that Rich looks at your computer and gives cost estimates for free is so wonderful! And he explains exactly what he's going to do every step of the way.
Rich took a look at my computer right away and gave me a price estimate (roughly $40 for the screen and $40 per hour for labor with a time estimate of 1 hour). He asked me to leave the netbook overnight and told me that he would have to inspect it for internal damage too (turns out there was no internal damage) and that he'd get back to me by the next morning with more info.
A few short hours later, he emailed to tell me there was no internal damage (phew!) and that found me a screen on eBay (he doesn't keep them in stock) - for only $36, a slightly lower price than he'd figured.
Within a few days, the screen had arrived and he installed it - and everything was all new and shiny and perfect and ready to pick up by Thursday evening! He even went way above and beyond with an added surprise for me - he added space to my hard drive (which was getting dangerously full!). The netbook works great now and I'm super happy and grateful to Rich!
Rich has a good business model of working from home. That's why the price is very reasonable price. And, if I got it correctly, there is no charge for an easy diagnosis. Meanwhile, another computer repair shop on Valencia charges $35 for the same service. And there is no guaranty if its possible or not to fix your laptop.
But the most important for you will be how fast he finds the root of the problem. In my case I had no idea why my laptop had been showing a black screen. Within a few minutes, I've learned what could be the possibilities. We agreed to leave the laptop until he knows what my cause the malfunction.
After a few hours later I got a phone call from Rich notifying me what's wrong and how to fix it. I was really glad to hear that, because he found the reason which was a hard drive problem and some court that was disconnected from the screen.
I believe it reasonable to have my laptop fixed by a knowledgeable computer repair specialist!
amazing! Rich is a pleasure to work with and he will make sure to take time to walk you through your computer's problems and the potential solutions. He keeps you updated on the progress of repairs and tries to get everything done in a timely manner. He runs the shop from his home so don't be shocked when you arrive and find computer parts in every corner! He is incredibly knowledgeable about different computer problems, but will be the first to admit when he doesn't have the expertise to address your computer's problems.
Rich replaced my laptop's motherboard almost two years ago now and everything ha been working great ever since. A couple hundred bucks to give my laptop an extension on life was well worth the investment and I thank Rich for guiding me through those decisions.
Being in the middle of an online class was really the worst time for my computer to start causing problems. I found Rich on Yelp, and he was great. I dropped my computer off Monday night, and it was ready to pick up Wednesday afternoon. He diagnosed and fixed the problem, updated some programs, added a few great Mozilla add-ons, cleaned the computer, and more, all for only $48.
His evening hours made it possible to drop off and pick up my computer without missing work. The location is great too - easy to reach on public transit, and no problem finding parking on the block if you decide to drive.
I will definitely use his services again.
I wanted to replace my whole network at my office and install newer up to date computers and a router, etc. Richard did the shopping, bought all the components I needed and installed everything at my office and made sure it was working. Oh boo, latest laptop and a fatal hardrive DUMP. Luckily, I did back up not too long ago, even so, it's still and expensive kinda repair. Rich to the rescue! He installed a used HD and I am up and running. So far I have been very happy with the service of Grey Matter, it's the only place I take my electronics. Rich has very reasonable prices too.

My laptop was running like trash and the fan was working like a helicopter even if nothing was running. I concluded that it was a fan problem (which requires the whole computer to be disassembled on my laptop) and called him specifically telling him to clean it. When i got my laptop back he stated that after disassembly (which takes about an hour) he found that the fan was not particularly clogged. Instead he found that viruses and malware was causing my computer to run at 100% at all times. He explained he felt guilty charging me for cleaning something that wasn't essential to the problem (despite that I specifically told him to do that) and he cleaned out and updated my computer. He probably spent at least an extra hour on work I hadn't asked for, free of charge. The computer was running like new and looked BRAND NEW! I pretty much had to force a tip down his throat. Great guy. Many thanks Rich.
I went to Rich with a video problem on my Toshiba laptop. He fixed the problem, and tuned up my laptop. He was kind, professional, and a good teacher. I highly recommend him.
Rich was so nice and helpful. Turns out what I thought was a defective power jack in my laptop was a defective power cord. Rich suggested I buy one on Amazon. He took the time to briefly browse Amazon to zero in on some candidates. I ended up buying 2 power cords since they were so affordable and they solved the issue.
Look forward to calling on Rich again, if I have any additional issues with my Toshiba.

I am so thankful to have found Rich on Yelp - he is truly wonderful and was a pleasure to work with. Incredibly knowledgeable, honest and affordable. After having a terrible experience with Geek Squad I found Rich who fixed my computer in a timely manner. It was refreshing to work with someone who was so transparent - if you have any computer problem Rich at Grey Matter should be your 1st call.
This guy is beyond amazing at fixing PCs. You MUST go to him if you have any technical problems, even if it will only take 5 minutes. Because he is SO honest, he will only charge you for that 5 minutes. He is HANDS DOWN the most honest and most affordable. He is so inexpensive for what he does, and he has the best prices of any computer repair service in the city.
I found him through Yelp because I called TechCollective, TechBrains and all of the other small business tech services and they were too pricey. They were at least double what Rich quoted me and he did the job brilliantly. He charges extremely fairly (dare I say, almost too fairly; I don't want him to go out of business because he is too fair!) and more importantly, he is very adept and skilled. He told me he's been working on computers since the 70s! So he's got the skillz with none of the attitude.
Save your money, save your computer, go to Rich. He is worth hopping onto the N Judah for. Guaranteed.
Rich does amazing work. On two separate occasions, Rich has saved me by saving my broken PCs. At the times I've been most despondent about data loss, hard drive failures, etc., Rich has quickly restored my faith in tech humanity, liberally spreading good PC karma.
The first time, on a friend's recommendation, I went to see Rich with a crashed laptop hard drive that held all my personal information, including my Master's thesis, the most recent version of which had not been backed up. (My bad!)
The second time, just recently, I returned to Rich with a 5-year-old desktop that had failed so badly that it would not boot up.
In both scenarios, Rich worked promptly and tirelessly, getting my systems up and running in no time! Rich recovered data that I'd figured was lost for good. On my desktop, he replaced the hard drive, upgrading parts to new standards as he went along, and invested hours upon hours to resolve my case to his high expectations. He then proceeded to apologize that he went over the quoted estimate and told me that he'd be fine to honor that, despite doing twice as much work. What a guy!!
In both cases, Rich invested more time, energy, and expertise to exact a solution FAR better than expected AND for less money than expected! In addition, all along the way, whenever I stopped by, he would provide me with tips, clues, and teach me little work-arounds!

The Best!!! Rich is a fantastic resource for anyone with a PC desktop or laptop who is not tech savvy, moderately tech savvy or just wants someone to take on the time consuming work that comes with PC maintenance.

Rich is the best! My computer with what looked like terminal heat-stroke and Rich not only revived it, but now it's working far better than it was before.
I cannot recommend Rich enough for electronic crises. He is super competent in computer fixing and has a wonderfully calming demeanor. And his pricing is extremely reasonable. He will totally treat you right.
Rich was super helpful. I couldn't figure out why my computer was running so poorly. It was slow, my sonos wouldn't run off of it, I couldn't update windows, I often had to force shut down etc. I had run a bunch of diagnostics and defrag to no avail.
He tracked down 3 major problems including some problems with my virus software that was using up most of CPU processing power. I would estimate he did about 6 hours worth of work, but only charged me for three.
He was super honest, responsive, dedicated and quick. He also guarantees his work.
I rarely yelp anything but since I recently used recommendations for Rich on Yelp, I might as well share my experience. And I've read a thread below of another client with a similar experience...and others who agreed to that thread.
1st work = great, but within a couple of months, my laptop bombed. Went back to Rich explaining issues. He'd said he'd get in touch with me but made no initiative to set appointments or timelines despite my continuous communications that I'm flexible with my schedule.
I waited & waited & waited. After multiple emails with no response, I initiated a phone call.
FINALLY! Dropped off my laptop with his commitment to give me a status update on Sunday...nothing materialized. Close to a week has passed, no updates / progress. I had to initiate another phone call. Got put on hold with some weird "elevator music" for 5+ minutes. Either by accident or not, Rich didn't attempt to re-call, so I had to make a 3rd call only to remind him whom I was, my issue, etc.
He said he would look into it and get back to me that same night...nothing. Next day, FINALLY, initiated by him, an email stating he couldn't fix it. Up to this point we knew the issue, it was a matter of ordering a new part as the original piece he had ordered and installed was defective. If he'd done it before, why couldn't he do it again with a new part?
In frustration, I emailed back with a COMPLAINT; which apparently wasn't to Rich's liking. DEAL WITH IT. I'm not the 1st nor the last. He left me in the dark for several days because of personal issues, yet I was polite, patient and understanding. I didn't see the same sentiments in return. Had I not reached out on the 3rd attempt, it 's be pretty safe to say, my laptop would have sat there for another week.
Rich is a nice and honest guy.... don't get me wrong, but this is still a business. If you, the owner, can't make the bare minimum effort of a 5 minute email or phone call to your client for a status update, get someone else to do it; simply say you're looking/working on it... That's as difficult as it could get. At least your client knows what's going on. It's still a business!
Furthermore, some of us telecommute...so it does impact our professional schedule when our laptops are not available. Let us know progress / updates so we can make arrangements. We're in 2012...
Bottom line, a trustworthy and depending business isn't just about knowing your craft, it's also about customer service and keeping to your words (scheduling, follow ups, follow throughs, remembering who's who...get a planner)...an area that Rich needs a regular maintenance reboot.
Very well mannered bro when speaking to him. i called him up regarding my laptop problem which was the socket which connects the power plug in the laptop. his estimates were free over the phone. Rich was unfortunately in New York at the time attending personal matters and could not be present in SF, but was kind enough to order the necessary part/s for my laptop.
Overall my perception just by talking to him on the phone is that RIch knows how to convey with the problems and needs of his customers, and his prices are reasonable. Regardless, reason i came to him was because it was a physical problem towards the laptop in which i could not just Google and try to fix so myself. I highly recommend his services if you cannot do so.
Rich is a very friendly, very helpful guy, and overall cannot be described as anything less than awesome.

As a newbie laptop user, imagine my chagrin when I tripped over my recharger cord and crashed my new laptop to the floor. I'm new to the area, an IT idiot and it's a Sunday afternoon....the perfect storm.
I called Rich after reading the great reviews on yelp. Not only did he make time to see me on Sunday evening, he stayed up all night, found and repaired the problem (my computer is so new he couldn't even order a replacement part; he had to fix the part that I had destroyed), and even upgraded my driver to make my touchpad work better. All in all, I ended up with a better computer than when I turned it in to him. ALL WITHIN 24 HOURS. He was friendly, courteous, efficient and knowledgeable. His prices are great too. I most definitely recommend Rich.
Rich is both personable and knowledgeable. My girlfriend's laptop had a hardware issue which was beyond my expertise to fix myself. I brought it to Rich, and he quickly diagnosed the issue, looked on eBay with me to get the best price on the part we needed, and had the laptop back in perfect condition as soon as the part shipped. He explained the work in detail and his price was very reasonable. He had even cleaned the laptop by the time I arrived to pick it up.

Rich is obviously very good at his job, and he's very generous, to boot. I'd been building a PC when I realized that I didn't have a few cables (SATA and DVI) I needed. I called Rich looking for them, and I was able to pick exactly what I needed (for an amazing price) within minutes.

Each time he figures out what others scratch their heads at and I always leave him with a computer humming and purring like a cat in the sun. I have gone to many so called "Computer Techs" in the past. But when you finally meet an expert, it's like finding the Holy Grail! I took my laptop to Rich after buying it on Craigslist. He was very professional and actually listened to what the problem was, and answered my concerns. After a couple of days it was fixed, then he gave me the bill. Boy was I shocked! Not only did he not, over charged me for the repair. But he explained exactly what he did from start to finish. It almost took the entire page! It wasn't just a sentence, "Fixed computer" like the other receipts I received. The best part? A week latter I noticed the fan he had mentioned before was getting way too load. So I naturally took it back to him to fix. There were other issues, subwoofer, led lights ,etc. A week later fixed! Again, no over charge! Now you say, how is this a good thing? Not only did he explain, in detail what was fixed, but showed me where he bought the replacement parts, the old parts(which I kept), and all the receipts! He even re soldered some of the connections that were dried out, and vacuumed out the pet hair! I didn't even know there was pet hair in the laptop! lolz
Richard is "The Man" when it comes to computers. And I will be taking all of my pc problems to him from now on. Look, you have a choice.You can take your pc and /laptop issues to the fly by night, "Joker and Boy blunder", comedic duo like the others. Or just try Rich out? Yes, it might be a home business, but cost the savings will translate over and you'll know a little more about your pc that you didn't know before.
I've been long overdue in writing this review. If I could give 10 stars, I would. Rich has helped me twice in repairing my keyboard on 2 different laptops when other people thought it was a lost cause. Not only that, he was willing to help me out in an emergency situation (I was going out of town) with just an hour's notice. He's extremely knowledgeable, thorough, and has excellent customer service skills. If you have any hardware or software issues with your computer, run, do not walk to see him!

When the ac jack on my laptop got messed up I felt so helpless. I went to craigslist and searched for all the computer repair technicians out there in San Francisco. Don't get me wrong there were tons! But when I called each and everyone of them their prices where way out of my budget. I
don't think that it is worth paying $300 for fixing something like the ac jack. I almost decided to buy a new laptop when I found Rich's Ad on craigslist so I immediately emailed him about my baby. He replied so quickly I though it was a fake post. I emailed Rich back and he gave me the diagnostic and everything, he also gave me a quote of how much the entire job was going to be.........to my great surprise his price was soooooooooooo convenient that I almost cried. So i dropped off my baby at Rich's, and he kept me updated everyday. There is not a day that went by that Rich didn't email me with an update which I think is the greatest thing in the world. It took him about 3 days to fix my baby. When I went to pick it up there my baby was all brand new and in top shape, it was like when i first bought it. I couldn't believe that it was running. Rich also updated everything in th laptop (which I doubt any other technician would have done). I am so happy with the results and the price. I will never look on the net again for another technician because Rich is the best. Thanks Rich!
Rich is AWESOME! he fixed up my little PC so it is as good as new. He can fix ANYTHING- and his prices are beyond reasonable. I love knowing I've got Rich in my corner.

I first found him on Yelp when the connector in the computer for the power cord broke inside the computer. At the time I wasn't sure what happened. But found it it just snapped and the piece was still in the computer. Rich was able to repair the piece and only charged me for less than an hour labor.
The next visit was with the BF's computer. It somehow "lost" all information about being able to log onto the internet. The BF is not particularly computer literate so after myself trying a couple of fixes with no luck I again called Rich. He took care of it and added a couple of browser options just to be safe, again less than an hour labor.
My most recent problem was bigger. After turning the computer off one morning, the screen would not power back on when I tried to get back on in the afternoon. I immediately called Rich. I brought the computer over and unfortunately found out that my motherboard died. Rich was most helpful in sending me links to other computers while I shopped around and even held on to my computer for a coupple of months while I decided what to do. After purchasing and returning a computer I did not like the feel of I decided that strictly financially speaking (since I am not working right now) I would prefer to fix it rather than get a new computer. For less than two hours labor and the cost of the motherboard I got back my computer all cleaned up outside and inside. He cleaned my fan, the keys. Cleaned my files, deleting duplicates which all meant that now my computer runs better than when I left it with him.
If you need any help this is the guy to go to. He is friendly, very knowledgeable, and reasonably priced for his amazing skills. He works from home and is a bit of a night owl so it makes it convenient for those working during the day as he is available until about 10 at night.

Richard really listened to the description of the problem I had, was able to stop by the same evening prepared with a cd to boot my computer just in case (he was right), and he fixed the problem in under an hour. I had struggled with restoring a system image created with Windows 7 after Dell replaced the hard drive on my 9-month old computer. I will definitely enlist Richard's services in the future and tell everyone I know to call him when they need a tech-hand.
