Review Highlights
I love Greg's. One of my favorite stores on Hawthorne. Great selection of just about anything for anyone.
As a fan of robots, books, cards, candles and toys, it's no wonder I love this store. Of the dozen times I've been here in the last few months, I have never left without a purchase. For me, that's not a hard task. How can you resist a monster finger puppet for a dollar?
Whenever I have to buy a gift for someone, I always go to Greg's first.
And it always smells so damn good.
I bought my mom a purse shaped like a chicken!
CHICKEN!!!
(Just don't tell her--it's supposed to be a surprise.)
Whenever I visit Hawthorne I walk inside Greg's with the intent to browse--and inevitably walk out with a funky, unique gift or card. The prices are fairly reasonable too, so if you stop in I predict an impulse buy in your future.
This section of Hawthorne is loaded with shops that sell "stuff" that runs from rummage to artsy to vintage. My "wants vs. needs" dynamic on this street could threaten the space-time continuum.
Greg's in a comfortable and well-appointed shop with nice staff and and interesting selection of assorted housewares, stationary, and novelty items. I also like their playing-card business cards, one of which I'm admiring as I'm writing this post.
I really like Greg's. It is great for window shopping on a lazy Saturday stroll down Hawthorne or also good for some cute home accessories or a special unique gift. I love that I can visit here with my mom and we can both enjoy it.
Some of my favorite finds recently: "My Neighbor Totoro" stuffed animals, stylish but inexpensive couches, wall hooks in a variety of animal shapes, and my Mom loved the vintage-looking clocks in a variety of bright shades".
What caught my eye was the totoro displays outside of greg's so i had to come in.
Not your ordinary novelty and gift store. The merchandise they sell here is cute, colorful, and from local artists as well as imported stuff from japan. My favorite items in the store were these postcards made by a local artist whose work is all around portland. I bought a bunch of postcards (http://www.papermilk.com), some paul frank stuff, a wallet and recycled tote/clutch.
On my trip i think i went to greg's three times. I also like their attractive business cards which has fortune/tarot picture on the front.
Greg's is one of those places that serves as a fantasy in luxurious functionality for me. Why yes, the allure of figurines with bobbly heads for each Chinese astrology sign is wide and unexpected as a Chinese New Year gift. But can I really justify spending over twenty dollars per animal? Of course I could use a stylish and tasteful laptop tote made by a Portland local. But for one hundred and thirty beans? Eh, I'll just lug it around in the backup it came with, once I actually replace the battery and make it porta-ready again.
But I can't blame a place that carries nearly all Northwest-centric designers and craftspeoples' work. How cool is it that Greg's now carries my beloved Northwest Shirts stag hoodie in its original green-yellow combo but also in navy blue and burgundy? Maybe you don't get excited over color choices, but you should because they are fabulous. They will make you look like a modern-day collegiate. We will talk about our crazy psych prof over a third pot of coffee at two AM once you get one.
LOVE this shop. If you are in need of a fun gift for anyone: dad, mom, friend, lover or yourself, this is a great place to find all sorts of fun stuff. Greg's stocks stationery, housewares, art and bags just to name a few.
The shop is in a good location. I went shopping there before the big storm in December and still remember how pleasant the staff seemed considering the holiday rush. I got some great gnome christmas cards made locally at Egg Press for a great price -what a steal!
The store is small, like most other shops in the area, but don't let that detour you from spending time looking at all the fun stuff.
Go down to Hawthorne on Saturday, get some great breakfast at one of the cafes, then head to Greg's for some shopping. Yay for Greg's!
I'm not usually one to give into "humorous" and novelty crap, but somewhere between the "Jesus Hates It When You Smoke" ashtrays and the Tokidoki stationery, Greg's wrangled me in.
This place is full to the brim with adorable and funny. Kitschy-cool paper and handcrafted cards that go all the way up the wall. Jesus notebooks with holy tattoos in the back. Fragrant candles, soaps, and lotions. Hairties and lapel pins. Books and aprons and keychains and la Virgen de Guadalupe magnets.
It's the penultimate of randomness that isn't at all stupid. Everything is awesome and poignant and fabulous if there are any birthdays coming up.
Just watch out--awesomeness comes with a price. But you'll be too happy with your newfound booty to even give a crap.
The best way to describe this place would have to be: Everything I want, but nothing I need. Aka: What excuse do I have to buy this thing I want?
When I walked in, what seemed to be the store owner commented on how fun & colorful my dress was. How annoying! He was already finding ways to start up my shopping excuse generator.
Then, a woman w/ a huge dog came in & instead of worrying what it might knock over in the cutely filled store. He coo-ed and went to find a bowl to fill with water because it looked thirsty.
That being said. The place is filled with the coolest, funniest, and cutest stuff. They have wallets and key chains made by local artists with cupcakes & animals. There was a wall full of Futurama metal signs & figurines. Really can't mind that.
Gotta remember this place if I ever do white elephant for Christmas.
Greg's has the most beautiful and unique cards. I could spend hours browsing the postcard section alone.
I've seen most of their inventory in various stores around Seattle, but it's nice to have it all in one place. Wish there was a Greg's in Ballard.
This place reminds me of many a "fun crap" store in San Francisco, especially on Valencia St. In Portland, it seems all the more charming.
To the nice lady who helped us out - you hooked up Wifey with a wallet she's sure to cherish for a while, and at a reasonable price too. And you laughed when I said virgin velcro. That's 5 stars in my book.
This is one of my favorite stores in Portland! They've got a smattering of adorable/funny/pretty stuff, tons of great cards and postcards (they carry an extensive Stella Mars collection), as well as lots of great local wares, too, and a few nicer home decor items.
By far the thing that keeps me coming back to this store again and again is it's great selection so reasonably priced. It's also a great gift-ing store, when you're looking for something more interesting or unique than you'd ever in your wildest dreams find at Lloyd Center or the like - and there's something there for everyone. I've bought for friends, for my mom, for my brother, even for my grandmother. There's an eclectic mix of stuff and you're sure to find something great.
On a side note, this is also one of my favorite shops to take out-of-towners to.
Great creations from Queen Bee, cute card selection, and crazy posters and trinkets. Plus they have My Neighbor Totoro softies! Can it get any better?
Plus: Greg's just updated their store layout and stock. If you haven't stopped in recently, you should.
Greg's is a knick-knack and interior shop on Hawthorne with a mod bent. All manner of wall clocks, prints, and bistro signs are on the walls, but the best stuff is either the fun furniture in the back or the little fixtures in the side room. The furniture collection is surprisingly good for such a limited selection, and there is almost always a portable bar, caf table, and bar stools on hand.
The side room has a lot of drawer pulls and---somehow---really tacky lawn decorations. Why such an otherwise great shop stocks garden gazing balls and themed windchimes, I'll never know, but they also have coat hooks shaped like monkeys and other fun details to spruce up an apartment.
greg's is a cool little shop in the Hawthorne district with lots of cards, gifts, and local art/goods. Lots of kitsch and style on their shelves, it's like a toy store for grown-ups who haven't, well, grown up. If you take the time to peruse their shelves, I bet you'll leave with something good.
Large and lovely gift shop for the super hip - you know who you are- you have the inside scoop on all the postmodern kitschy jokes and innuendo.
I like the selection at Greg's, and it IS a good place to buy gifts. That said, I find that the markup there is kind of ridiculous. You can buy basically everything Greg's has (Queen Bee, PaperMilk, Nikki McClure prints) through http://buyolympia.com for cheaper - we're talking about a $4 difference for a calendar or poster.
I shop there anyway, to support local business and avoid generating waste by shipping, etc. but I really wish they had more competitive prices.
Cute supply of strange trinkets and gifts, but I've had strange experiences with the sales staff-- they seem a little but surly. That may have been a fluke, though. Good place to shop if you're seeking greeting cards and oddities, but I haven't found an awful lot of stuff I want to take home. I guess it's a little too kitschy for my taste.
Greg's is for browsing. They have plenty of cute knick knacks, acoutrements, stationary, cards, and lotion to look at it. When I wrote that last sentence I realized I could be talking about a Hallmark Home Store, but I mean it when I say the selection is cute! Thinkhallmark gone hip and adorable. I always see something in here that is useless that I feel I must have and usually come to my senses before shelling out. Nevertheless, Greg's is a great place to buy cards on Hawthorne.
Full of cute, retro toys and gifts, Greg's is the perfect place to find a last minute birthday or housewarming present. Wind-up robots, gnome dishware, plastic decorative animals, fake patches of grass, retro lamps, and an array of Japanese toys only touch on the unique odds and ends you might find upon browsing. With an always helpful and friendly staff, Greg's continues to help Hawthorne remain one of the most unique districts in Portland.
Greg's is a lifesaver when you need that one last gift. Between the lamps, candles, Japanese toys, and other knick knacks, they always have something you can wrap with pride.
One od the best places in Portland to find gifts for the person who has everything (and likes odd things)! Wonderful selection, good prices, and friendly staff.
there is a new-ish Greg's up in NoPo, quite near my house. it is a dangerous place to go to - just because i seem to want to stay in there and check everything out for hours! there are some really nice (e.g. Queen Bee) things, some completely goofy things ("Everyone Poops" books and the like), and a great gift card selection. i also really like the staff/owners... they are just super nice people. yea, it is a bit pricey, but so are all boutique-y places, so i don't think Greg's is outrageous on that end. hip, fun, things-you-don't-need-but-fun-to-check-out.
