I'm a knitting fiend, and I think Greenwich Yarns is just great.  It is small and cozy, but always seems to have what I need and I always leave with one more project than I came in with.   The staff is incredibly helpful, and it is always enlightening to work on a project at the table.   I used to be kind of intimidated by Laurie, but she really is incredibly nice and accommodating, just maybe not super perky, in your face happy, which is just fine by me.  They have also been really great about special ordering what I need and being pretty flexible about when I could pick it up, unlike another yarn store I frequent.

RUDE sales women!  I am in my 30s and went in to this store to just browse and was greeted with stares from the knitting circle at the table (all women in their 70s+)  I ended up buying needle covers and I don't think a single word was exchanged between me and the sales woman.  SO RUDE.  I will NEVER go back here.  There are so many other warm, friendly knitting stores in this city that I don't feel I need to give my money to the unappreciative!  And their prices are sky-high.

KRISTINA:  Hello!

YARN LADY:  (cool and dry) Yes, you're in a yarn store, so you're off to a good start.

KRISTINA: Um.  Ok, well.  I also need a bootie recipe!

YARN LADY:  You mean a bootie PAT-TERN.

KRISTINA:  Yes!  That too!  HA HA HA HA HA HA!

YARN LADY:  (silence)

KRISTINA:  HA HA HA HA HA HA...HA...haaa...ur.

YARN LADY:  This bootie pattern is quite simple, for beginner knitters.  You will need one skein of this angora.

KRISTINA:  (feeling yarn)  Oooh, soft.  WHOA!  That's expensive yarn!

YARN LADY:  Yes, angora is not cheap.  But booties are quite popular in this yarn.

KRISTINA:  Yesh...my boo-tay IS quite popular in angora hot pants...HA HA!  HAAA HA HA HA!!  BWA-HA HA HAAAaaa....aa...urg.

YARN LADY:  (silence)

I know I'm a dork.  I'm just thanking baby Jesus I didn't break into Sir-Mix-a-Lot right then and there...and believe me, I came thiiiis (one millimeter) close.

Not a huge store or selection, but I noticed a number of yarns I have not seen in recent visits to other stores around the country.

Staff (owner?) was helpful but I didn't find her to be very warm or friendly. I think maybe the pace of the store is just very slow and mellow, as opposed to some of the more bubbly, happy LYS I've experienced.

Other reviews mention The Table -- I also was invited to sit at the table for help with a problem, and was allowed to "test-run" some needles to see if they'd be a better fit for my project. The folks at the table were interesting and conversational, and I could see this being an entertaining place to hang out and knit... though I didn't feel especially welcome, I get the definite impression this would change with familiarity.

I recommend checking it out if you're in the area!

I learned to knit at Greenwich Yarn and I'll always be grateful to them for that!  Three consecutive Saturday morning classes and voila, I can now whip up a scarf or a hat all by my little lonesome.

The staff is great and its a very welcoming, non-intimidating store.  If you get stuck or make a boo-boo just bring it in and they'll help you with it.  One time the owner spent 10 minutes re-working my botched stitches back perfection--gratis.

Plus they carry the full range of Rowan yarns, my personal favorite.

IF you are EVER in the mood for CRAZY party time with the wild and crazy knitters of this AWESOME city then check this little hidden place out. After having a cocktail or two off of Fillmore St, maybe you'll be inspired to knitt something fun for your new sweetheart...or maybe you just like looking at yarn and feeling the fabric and seeing this colorful display.

Seriously, though. I am impressed by this little store that has been there for 25+ years. And I am going to take up knitting again...when I have time. :)

A total hidden jem. I love the look and feel of the place. It's a warm friendly place, IDEAL for the beginner knitter. They are going to take good care of you here. The selection isn't over whelming, but at the same time, it's inspiring and enticing. And when they say "yarn sale" they mean it. It's not a bin, it's the BACK YARD.  This store is a joy to shop at.

I took a beginners knitting class here and they were great. The owner Shaley is super sweet and helpful. The class I took was 4 weeks for $80. Then I think I spent another $70 on supplies (yarn and needles) I made a baby hat! I now consider myself a beginner knitter.

Laurie, the owner of Greenwich Yarn, is incredibly helpful, and I think this is the best yarn shop in the city. She will help you with any pattern or budget, help you correct your mistakes and answer all of your questions. It's a great, well-lit, friendly place to spend an afternoon knitting and talking with very dry, funny women. There are always a couple of knitters sitting at the table, discussing techniques, patterns, joking about whatnot. So come on by for a good knit!

This is my favorite Yarn store in San Francisco and I have been to all the other ones. The selection is amazing and I end up buying something every time I go there. They have great knitting books and magazines too. It is a very friendly environment, we can always hang out, sit and knit  and chat (and eat) and share design ideas and get advice from the owner or other people who work there or other knitters. They also help you in calculating the number of skeins you need for all your projects. Also the yarn is nicely organized so you have the possibility to see and touch everything. yup, definitely my favorite yarn shop.
