***Confetti and jazz hands for my 100th review. Woot woot! ***
While road tripping to Providence for a half marathon, the homeslice and I decided to take a little detour to Greenvale Vineyards. Because you know, drinking wine is the best way to hydrate before any long distance run. [It is not].
We had absolutely no problems navigating to this gem in Rhode Island's rustic wine country. Just driving down the long rugged, tree-lined entrance to the vineyard wowed us. Wine tasting was $15 for 6 wines [5 whites, 1 red] + tasting glass! Of the 6 wines I only liked their Skipping Stone blend of 90% Cayuga and 10% Vidal Blanc. I am definitely NOT a fan of the stainless steel ageing process that they use for most of their wines. It gives off a sharp, metallic taste that cut into my teeth. However the Skipping Stone was subtle and fruity - perfect for Sangria.
We purchased a bottle [$13. holla!] and staked out a premium spot on the grounds for our picnic. Yep, don't forget to pack a basket! We had delicious food, incredible wine and the soothing sounds of live jazz music in the background. That there scene was simple, yet surreal!
After we stuffed our faces and got a little sauced from the wine, we decided to explore the vineyard -- barefoot. We ran though endless rows of vines, giggling like 8 year olds. In that moment in time, we were young and free and had not one care in the world. The overall experience was....perfect! Just perfect!Listed in: Dear Winter, Die!

This was the second stop on my wine tasting trip and I was quite impressed with their exceptional whites! To quickly run down the list:
Rosecliff Pinot Gris - deep coastal nose, light-med body, firm citrus notes, good acidic finish
2007 Greenvale Chardonnay - buttery nose, less fruit with more oak, med weight, light acidic finish
2008 Chardonnay Select - light butter and pebble on the nose, heavier weight with ample oak
2009 Vidal Blanc - light peach notes and crisp finish
Skipping Stone White - honey on the nose, light weight, notes of honey throughout, short finish
2006 Cabernet Franc - mild smoke and wet stone on the nose, great weight, notes of sulphur, black licorice and tobacco, lingering finish
The winery itself has a very laid-back atmosphere with plenty of open grass for a picnic or just lounging around under the sun. They also have quality live jazz on Saturday afternoons from 1-4 pm, so it's a great time to visit if you haven't been yet! -

The smallest of the tasting areas in the immediate Newport area, but by far the most interesting of the tours.
The guide takes you through a number of the growing areas and tells you about the grapes, the planting history and why stuff is where it is. Also gives you some frank information about what didn't grow for them as well.
If you are lucky you will also get to meet the fuzzy cows.
In the summer they do live music in the tasting room on Saturdays and people can picnic around it.
The tasting room is small, but the wines are good (some very, some just OK, the Vidal was our fave) and they servers were very helpful in explaining the wines as well.
If you are visiting wineries in the area of just looking to fill and afternoon you should include this winery when you visit Newport winery as well !!! -

Definitely not a bad way to spend a summer afternoon. Greenvale is located only 5 minutes or so out of Newport and has some great scenery to take in.
We did the jazz tasting. It's $15 for 6 wines (4 of them were very very good and the other 2 were good as well) and you get to hear a live jazz band in the background which was a nice touch.
The only reason why this place doesn't get 5 stars is the dog. After the tastings my girlfriend and I decided to eat lunch on the ground (most people will do this). The owner's dog would not leave us along. It kept trying to eat our cheese, olives, bread, etc. and wouldn't let up. 75% of our eating time was us trying to get him / her to go away. I love dogs, don't get me wrong, but not while I'm trying to eat. -

Vines. Woods. Water. Furry Scottish Cows. You can't ask for more in the way of scenery.
A couple of picnic tables outside the tasting room (converted barn - mmm... nice old woody smell) invite you take it all in.
All of the grapes used in their wines are grown on the property, using the neighboring Newport Vineyards facilities to make the wine, almost all whites. The Vidal Blanc was really somethin' memorable - grabbed a few bottles and can't wait to meet again.Listed in: E-I-E-I-O

I agree with Dave P. The staff was great...We loved the dog-a beautiful golden retriever. The wine-no...just no...Wonderful setting...but the wine...nooooo. I'm not sure if it was the steel barrel over oak....or what exactly it was...but 12 bux for a tasting....not worth it at all....

Nice staff...
The wine...not so much. I cannot believe they audaciously charge $12/tasting. Napa and other Cali vineyards charge nothing to $15-20/tasting. BUT, at least you're in for some good to fantastic wine.
Now, you're probably thinking, "you can't compare Cali to R.I." And you'd be right because the wine (both white and red) at this place was completely unpalatable. They seriously need help in the wine making department. -

I don't live far from here and go occasionally.
The place is pretty but the tasting room is not set up to accomodate the busy weekend tastings. Also, some of those conducting the tasting do not know enough about the wines.
THEIR DOG POOPED IN THE TASTING ROOM LAST TIME I WAS THERE AND STUNK IT UP. LOL....... -

I broke my vow of silence of three years on Yelp with this visit to Greenvale Vineyards. I absolutely adore this place. Quaint, unassuming, and wholesome are words that come to mind when you come here. The wines were mostly white, but all were decent and the staff was extremely helpful and laid-back. As a northern Californian living in DC disappointed with a few VA wineries, this experience has restored hope in this oenophile's continual desire to add entries to her blackbook of winescapes.

Greenvale, Greenvale: I cannot wait for this summer, spending Saturday afternoons listening to Jazz, sampling your wines and walking your grounds.
My friends and I discovered this little vineyard, while attending school. We've been going, starting every spring for years. Every weekend while studying for the bar last summer, we'd take a break on Saturday, head down to Greenvale with a picnic basket of assorted cheeses. We'd bring my dog and a blanket and grab a bottle of wine and listen to the weekly live Jazz.
The vineyard stretches down to the Sakonnet River, and is nestled right in between Portsmouth and Newport. It's right on a farm, and the owners welcome you to roam around. The grounds are picturesque, and the wine is delicious (especially for Rhody wines).
Words and the pictures posted really do not describe how beautiful it really is. I debated whether or not to review it, it's one of those places you just want to keep all to yourself. -

Easygoing staff
Yes, you're taking the right road
Decent tasting price
Greenvale is very much off the beaten path, so much so that when I went here with my father we thought we were on the wrong road. Since two men in a car together are incapable of asking directions or turning around, we were fortunate to be on the right road after all.
We arrived for a tour at the time displayed on the website, to little fanfare. The only other person there was the attendant and an enthusiastic dog. She was, however, happy to give us a tasting of a few wines (a favorite being the incredibly crisp Skipping Stone White). When it became apparent that there were no other akers for the tour, she happily locke up shop and took us around the vineyard herself.
It was a great little vineyard, and for the cost of the tasting we enjoyed a few glasses of wine and a tour. Of course the vineyard certainly enjoyed the money we laid down on 6 more bottles of wine. Definitely a nice afternoon date destination in the fall or spring. -

Personally, I enjoyed my visit to this place very much. I've been here twice, once for their harvest festival (you get to try 9 wines as opposed to 7) and another on a random visit. This is a very small vineyard, I believe the man giving the wine tasting said they sell about 3600 cases annually.
I loved the tour of the place because it's gorgeous (it's right near the water-- oh and you can rent this beautiful site for a wedding or some other wonderful event!), they have 2 friendly dogs and 2 friendly fuzzy cows/steer. The tour was very informative about how they grow their grapes and the different types of grapes they have. Also, since I know next to nothing about wine I enjoyed the informative wine tasting experience. Each person who gave us the wine tasting explained the wines and how they should taste by explaining how some of the wines should have a smooth finish or a lingering aftertaste, etc etc. It was very informative for a wine n00b like myself and I believe all that detail helped my brain and palate to work harmoniously to know what tastes to look for in the wine.
All-in-all, it was a very nice place and a nice experience. I would come back here again even though I've tasted all their wines twice, especially to visit those friendly animals.
FYI: The wine tasting cost $8 for the 7 wines and the tour is free. Their bottles of wine range from $11.99 to $25.99. -

Tasting includes 6 wines, pretty simple white wines and a lean red table wine.
Vidal blanc was my favorite that made me say "wow". The other wines were just OK.
This is one of the prettier vineyards, they do wine tastings in a barn and you're surrounded by vines and nature.
Our girl was pretty nice and had enough personality to make the experience interesting but didn't have a whole lot to add other than that she really likes wine. -
Review from Kevin W.
The tour is awesome, the wines not much to write home about, the guy whom did the tasting lecture (more like fairy snob telling) on the patio was a bore. First I thought he was cute but once he started babbling on I knew it wouldn't be good.
What should have taken about 30 minutes to sample 7 wines (yes 7 wines) last like an eternity (1 fourty-five minutes). TOO DAMN LONG.
Will not go back. -

I would say this is not my favorite vineyard in the area. I tried to mix it up and visit a new vineyard on my trip to Newport. This is very easy to get to on the way down to Newport. The road to the actual vineyard is beautiful, like driving into an untouched land. There is a very picturesque view of the Sakonnet River and a nice background for taking pictures.
I was in love with the whole place....until we went inside and the tasting was $8, and I only enjoyed one of the wines. The wine I liked was called Skipping Stone and I think I enjoyed the name as much as the wine. "Skipping Stone is a blend of 90% Cayuga and 10% Vidal Blanc. Very light in color, the wine is aromatic with a bright, crisp, floral nose -- delicious and refreshing on the palate." The wine is also affordable at $12.99.
I think I would have enjoyed this experience much more if I haven't been a regular at The Newport Vineyards for awhile now. The area is lovely and it would make for a great day if you are not already a fan of the competition. -

If I could own any one of the wineries along the Coastal Wine Trail, it would be Greenvale Vineyards. Located along the west bank of the Sakonnet River, the beautiful and bucolic Greenvale Vineyards is arguably the most impressive property of the lot. What began as a simple agricultural venture -- an attempt to grow a marketable crop (i.e. grapes), and therefore preserve the land from future development -- has now turned into a successful winery in its own right.
Greenvale grows many of the same grape varieties you'll find at other vineyards in the area. However, what separates them from the rest is that they focus entirely on quality rather than quantity. They don't attempt to market a wine if the grape cannot produce a respectable wine in the style of the varietal. While other wineries may attempt to sell a dozen or more wines, Greenvale sells as few as six or seven, and in limited quantities. Of these, I consider at least three to be of high quality and value. The Skipping Stone White and Vidal Blanc are refreshing, dry, and very drinkable, and a tremendous value at around $14 per bottle. At a higher price point, the Elms Meritage (a blend of Cabernet Franc and Merlot) is possibly the best red wine I've tasted on the Coastal Wine Trail. Round these out with the Chardonnay Select (which is not too expensive at $23 per bottle), and you have a very impressive selection of wines.
If you are traveling along the Coastal Wine Trail, do not complete your trip without paying a visit to Greenvale Vineyards. Sample wines in the restored and renovated stable, walk among the vines in the vineyard, and purchase a few of your favorite bottles to bring home. If you enjoy this winery as much as I do, it'll become a "must visit" on all your future itineraries. -

a gorgeous vineyard with some pretty good wines.
this is a small vineyard. actually, they used to sell all of their grapes to newport vineyards, but ultimately decided to bottle their own.
though i wasn't tremendously impressed with their reds (a little sweet), i did like their vidal blanc and pinot gris, both of which were reasonably priced. so, being the drinker i am, i picked up a few bottles of each.
didn't go on an "official" tasting day, just stopped by. the staff was informed and friendly, but i couldn't fandango a tour since there were only 2 people working and between 5 and 10 people going in and out for tastings. ah well. -

This is only the second time I've ever visited a vineyard, but it made me excited to see more! Greenvale has a beautiful location near the Sakonnet River. The tasting was great, $9 to try 6 wines, and the tour was FREE. We found a nice spot in the shade and sat on stumps drinking cold white wine on a hot day. The staff is super knowledgable and I would definitely recommend this place.

One word-fantastic! The locations is quaint and the staff were absolutely wonderful. I arranged for a private tour and they were just great to work with on the event. We had our wine tasting outside on picnic tables under the trees-a very private event with nice wines. This winery gives you a unique experience, not the industrial business like most of the wineries, just a beautiful location with folks who value the environment and one to one interactions with their customers-highly recommend.
