Definately a must for me. If the kids want to go swimming, we come here. Plus they have everything else in the world to do here. I am dying to go play some baseball, kickball, volleyball, or even boche ball here sometime very soon!
It's huge- I'd get lost, I swear. And don't get me started on people who can jog all the way around the lake....I could but it would take me 6 hours and tons of breaks...a walk is nice though. This place is where rollerblading should never go out of style.
Great for everyone, dogs too!
WOW!!! What a GREAT place! Such beautiful locations are hard to come by where I'm from in California, the Bay Area. Well, it's just different. I love it here - the air is so clean and fresh, there's lots of people around hanging out and exercising in the park, and the view is just beautiful. So much green. I love that there's a lot of people here all the time, it makes me feel like I'm really part of the life here, and it feels more safe too. I love how there's musicians playing marimbas and such exotic instruments. They smile at you when you walk by.
There's boats too, they cost money but it's probably worth doing at least once. And it looks great for a nice run too.
If you're a photographer...oh my goodness. So many good photo ops here. Especially at dusk...and I'm sure at dawn too. =) The little dock...the ducks...the beautiful trees...sigh. What a great park.

Riding bikes around Greenlake on a nice day can be fun... AND DANGEROUS!! Other people are insane! The only thing predictable about them is that THEY WILL GET IN YOUR WAY. I saw a lot of old fishermen around the lake the other day. The only things I can imagine coming out of greenlake are tires, body parts, old boots, and 3-eyed fishies like in the Simpsons.

For the first 5 years of my life in Seattle before knowing about Golden Gardens, this has been my second home during warming sunny days. I have countless memories here.
Watching friends in their softball league, re-learning how to rollarblade, swimming (yes swimming), walking around Greenlake, laying in the sun reading.....
My only complaint is that it gets super super busy on said nice days.

It's my fav, I must say. I can run, walk, ride a bike, rollerblade, or play tennis there. On a sunny day I can lay out in my bikini on a blanket. On a cloudy day I like to watch the duck brigade, especially the three outcasts who hang by themselves in the brush.
I say hi to the doggies who say hi to me. I smile at the men wearing short jean cut offs and the women who are a little too crazy to be running. The variety of people to watch is infinitely entertaining. The lake, wind, and trees are healing. It's just downright good.
Watch out when it's sunny and hot, they come in packs.
Green lake a fun place to take the kids to play or just go by yourself (and your pet on a leash) and go for a nice walk. It gets very busy on the weekends when it is sunny but worth the crowds. A nice place to spend the day.
I'm not a native, but Greenlake holds dear to my heart. Why? Because my fiance did something funny, but dumb at the same time. We were in the middle of the lake, on the paddle boat when he decided he wanted to jump in and cool off. It was a nice hot summer day. The funny part was he cooled off, but couldn't get back into the boat. LOL! I actually had to rescue my prince. I helped pulled him back into the boat., which he was struggling to get into by himself for a good 10 mins. Then he put his male pride away and let me help him. I felt like a hero. I hope he learned his lesson, we went home and he got a nasty body rash. LOL! Now we can look back and laugh at it. When we're not engaging in lifeguard trainings or water sports, we love to do our walking around here. Though on the real nice days, I try to get here real early to beat the rush.

Since we are still having weather that would make even a viking frolic in the grass while squealing like a 3 year old, I decide to go jogging or "yogging" ( It might be a soft J ). There is nothing like a beautiful day to make one feel like shit about the beer fat that one has diligently packed on all winter. Anyhoo, the park is beautiful, even though it is a little grimy and smells like duck poo from time to time. Look out positive body image, here comes the Andrew express.

Greenlake is my favorite local park. I have fond memories of this place. As a child my siblings and I all swam in the lake-that of course was when it was safe to do so. There are pictures of us in diapers in the water. Now a days I think the geese and ducks purposely lay their waste nuggets in a mine field to prevent us from geting to close to the questionable water. When I first was old enough to go on dates, this was where I had my first date- paddle boat across the lake. When I was single and had my dog, this is where we would go for walks right up until she got too old and weak. When I began dating my now ex-husband we used to ride our bikes around the lake regularly or attempt to play tennis. Once I had my first child strolled around the lake sneaking bread to the ducks asking the men that are fishing there if they caught anything and if they did were they actually planning on eating it? When I need to reflect or time for myself my internal compass drives me here where I will lay out with a good book or just watch people go by. Thank you Greenlake for the mental scrapbook I carry around with me of all that you have given me.
1 star for what you offer children:playground, toddler pool, a safe area to ride in all their protective pads and helmets, bubble man
2 star for keeping this park very clean and landscaped ( nothing you can do about the waste nuggets)
3 star for activities: tennis, paddle boats, pool, sports field
4 star for local restaurants in the area that serve great food, beverages
5 star for the people: you see all walks of life there

I've rented paddle boats here a couple of times. I always seem to get a real rickety one, where it's a total bitch to peddle, like the things all wonky and stuff. Then, I get tired and start floating off into the middle of the lake. Sh*t....it's so black, the water. WHAT'S down there? My mind starts reeling. What if a freakin' monster lays at the bottom of Greenlake and somehow I've awoken it from it's eternal sleep with my lame peddling? Maybe it's Cthulhu!
JESUS, get me OFF THIS VILE LAKE NOW! GOD HELP ME!
Somehow I make it back to the shore, to dry land. Why am I the only one to sense the horror deep inside this lake? Why?

I just about -live- at this park during the time when I'm not living in Germany. I try to get here, rain or shine, for at least one lap of fast walking every day, followed by a stiff cup of coffee or beer up in Tangletown (56th & Meridian). It is just part of my life. On really nice days, especially at the weekend, it can be stupidly crowded. Deal with it.
The fresh air, the three-miles-without-intersections, the numerous cafes and restaurants nearby, the easy road access, all add up to greatness, and is a major item that keeps me in the Seattle area. Green Lake park just about -is- Seattle to me, I'm addicted.

Greenlake gets 3 stars for the great people watching. One time I was at the lake and these people brought their pet ferret and were putting it in the lake and making it swim. I'm pretty sure it was trying to drown itself to escape them. They also brought a large inflatable pool and were using it as a boat. It was pretty entertaining, but when I got home there was a rusty fishing hook in my beach towel. Not cool.
Another time I decided to bring my new pink roller skates that I purchased in the children's section of Sports Authority and take a spin around the lake. Bad idea. I was lapped 3 times by a large man on roller blades and adults and children were laughing at me the whole time. At least someone was entertained.
Finally, my coworker likes to go running. One evening she was running around the lake when she spotted a pant-less man pleasuring himself IN THE LAKE. First gross, second scary. Regardless, I will still probably go back to the lake in the future.
Yes, it's crowded. Yes, there is no parking. Yes, the water is dirty so swimming is out of the question. Yes, it's basically a place for people watching instead of exercise... But despite all that, I still love Green Lake. :)
It's a flat and easy loop around the lake. I love running around this Sunday mornings before brunch. I can run around it forever--or at least until my knees give out.
For the fitness-minded, the inner loop is 2.8 miles and the outer loop is 3.3 miles.

I would enjoy this park if it wasn't so packed all the time. It is great for an occasional stroll. But the proximity to traffic and the hords of people keep me away. I guess I will have to go in the middle of the night but then I will get jumped by the masses of thiefs that I am pretty sure jsut hang out in the bushes waiting to grab my bling.

My friend and I like to pretend we're getting some exercise by running a casual lap around the lake. By "run a lap," I mean "start out running, lapse quickly into a fast-ish walk, then come to a complete stop as we get distracted by the yummy blackberries on the side of the path."
Seriously, I know we're not supposed to eat hem because of the nearby car exhaust or something, but they taste damn good and they motivate us to keep walking, because once we've eaten all the blackberries off one bush, we've gotta keep going to find more.
To add a note to the biker vs. pedestrian argument here, though--I also frequently ride my bike around the lake, and I too get annoyed by the people who walk SLOOOOWLY in the bike/rollerblade lane. Stay in the lanes, people. They're labeled for a reason, whether you like it or not.

My seattle summers consists of greenlake, greenlake, greenlake. :)
LOVEEEE IT. Thinking about it makes me happy.
After work, rush to change and get in a jog or go rollerblading. It's when I can zone everything out and just enjoy the sun, my ipod, and my alone time! But, its also a GREAT place to catch up with friends...walk around the lake, or lay out on the grass and read a book or chitchat with your coffee from Starbucks, or ice cream from Mix.
It's all about the people watching too! The ages range. From the kids swimming (although the water is mcnasty, they dont seem to care), couples young & old, those first dates where your able to get in a good view and good convo, families with kids and strollers, people with their dogs...MANY MANY dogs. :) But yes, so much going on!!! From street ball, to soccer, tennis, softball, volleyball, canoeing, paddleboating....
One negative- parking can be a b-word. Especially if your trying to get a spot in the main lot. good luck! better luck street parking or other lots around the lake.
FYI: avoid running when the sun is about to go down: the little flies start slapping you in the face. I look pretty ridiculous flinging my hands everywhere.

For the love of me I just can't get into this park. I hate the fact that Greenlake Ave. runs all the way around. When I go to a park I want to be away from the street and cars and noise. I don't get why people come here when there are so many other gems in this city (Volunteer, Discovery, Seward).
I think it doesn't help that the last two times I went here it was dark and stormy and gray (which would send anyone into the doldrums). But with my little time left I will focus my park energies on those places where I feel I can re-charge...and not suck my energy dry like Greenlake. Sorry Greenlake but I'm filing for a divorce....Irreconcilable Differences.

I don't know anything about the facilities. I do know that walking the path around the lake has helped me calm down and restore my sanity on more than one occasion, as well as providing good exercise for my body. When I first moved to Seattle and was jobless for two months, I walked around the lake multiple times a week in the sun and warmth and it was one of the most refreshing things I did for myself. The wide array of people and so many beautiful dogs make this always interesting. There are some times that are better than others to go around the lake, but for the most part my problems with crowds have been few and far between. I know I won't live in Seattle all my life and when I move, Green Lake will be one of the things that I miss the most.

It appears that I can no longer get away with eating whatever the hell I want AND not exercise AND not gain weight. Le sigh. So I've taken to jogging around the lake a couple times a week. To my immense surprise, I actually enjoy this. Much better than running the streets of Seattle and dodging traffic.
I usually run once around the inner loop (2.7 or 2.8 miles) and then maybe rollerblade around once more. The course is nice and flat and there's lots of interesting people and pets to admire, or to mock, as the case may be. I love the little ducklings that follow their mommy around. And all the open grass!
Parking can be a total bitch, so minus one star.

Great park. The facilities are awesome (basketball courts, soccer fields, playgrounds, pools, etc.) the running and biking paths are great, and there are always plenty of persons to people watch. Quite a bit of wildlife to watch if you pay attention. Also, I've never been hassled for setting up a slackline between the trees, which is nice. The only problem with being such a cool park is the crowded factor, but thats a small price to pay.

This is a gorgeous park. While running along the 2.8 mile paved inner path, it's easy to forget that you're in the middle of a city. You also have the alternative of running the 3.2 mile unpaved outer loop.
Like everyone else has said, it tends to get very crowded. But, even when things are crowded, having separate lanes for runners/pedestrians and bikers/rollerbladers/skateboarders helps keeps things under control.
It's a great place to run; you can keep a steady pace and an eye on how far you've run. People also run/walk at different speeds, so you never feel super slow.

Greenlake Park is SOOoo not haunted, Boobsock Tubetop! Yeah, I'm talkin' to you! Yep, callin' you out...
I run this badboy of a 2.8 mile loop, twice sometimes thricefold, several times a week, and not once have I seen a ghost, had an out of body experience, etcetra, etcetra.
What I do know about Greenlake Park is this:
I do not have a giant bicycle (wish I did), nor have I seen this individual (wish I would). I also do not squeal by on my practical Shwinn, yelling out obscenities to those who might wander into the 'wheelz' only path (when the feet only path is too crowded)- 'And hey, you crazy F*cker- I know who you are.. next time you flip me off, I got a stick with your 'spoke's' name on it!
I like to run the lake. I enjoy watching people in impractical shoes on cell phones, really 'get into their groove', really, 'workin' it out'.
I enjoy the runners/ walker's 'today is the first day of my new life! I'm doing this every night! This is my life change!' facial expressions as they pass by. They're gonna make it happen. Watch for it. They're goin' home tonight and chowin' on salads and rice cakes. Give them a hand!
I love you, 'Mr. Shorty Shorty Jean Short Rollerblade the day away Jackson'. Go on witcha bad self.. You and them blades.. HOG WILD!
I heart the place where you can sit on the cement and yell things at passers by, like: 'SHhhssshh. Damn! Heeeey.. don't run away!" or "Yow.. Mama- look whatcha done did!'
I dig the park. It's a great park. Sure, there might be an evil abcess of a sore in the middle of the park (it's called the lake), but hey, it's a good place to get your 'physical fitness swerve on'.. and so much more.
Good times.

While on my walk with some lovely company I might add I saw no ghost, boo, but I did experience the gnats, yuck. Beside taking a nice stroll around the lake you can also rent boats and kayaks, swim, fish, duck watch, dog watch, people watch and even picnic in the park. I'm glad I finally made it because now I have a new place to go for a nice walk.

I THINK GREENLAKE IS HAUNTED! BE CAREFUL!
I've been walking around Greenlake every morning with a very trustworthy stiltwalking, fire breathing, interior designer for the last 4 months (it only sounds dangerous)!
She can attest to the fact that it never rains when we go around Greenlake in the morning!
Not once! It's only a small pocket of time that we're there, and it will rain right before we arrive or leave, but never when we're going around?
Being a logical person of sciencey things, I had to discover why!
I went back through old city records at the Greenlake library and at town hall in an attempt to discover Greenlakes secret and came across some chilling facts!
The first Greenlake settler was a German gentleman named Erhart Seifried with a 132 acre homestead on the northeast shore of the lake in 1869. He arrived as an unmarried immigrant, age 37.
Chilling when you look at the facts.
My grandmothers maiden name was Heminger... GERMAN!
1869 was the year Grigori Rasputin, Russian mystic was born! That's just crazy! Rasputin just happens to be my mystic animal spirit guide guy! ("Why did I get assigned a person" you ask? ... it's something to do with the shrews not wanting me on their team, just let it go.)
I ate 132 gnats the first time I walked around greenlake at dusk! The exact number of acres on the homestead!
I'm unmarried! Just like Erhart! (I wonder why?) Plus, one day I'll be 37! (I just got chills).
AND THAT'S WHEN IT OCCURRED TO ME!
I've been haunted.
... um... or possessed?
Possibly, he's just watching me?
Look! I can't be really too sure here! Just listen to me when I say that Greenlake might not be 100% safe.
Makes it cooler huh?
Adds a bit of danger to your roller blading and poodle walking.
Oh... and to the autistic kid that always touches my arm when he walks by, "If you want a hug just ask".

Sure, it's beautiful, the dog parks is nice, there are lots of activities and shops and restaurants, etc... "what could there be to possibly complain about?" you say...
Well, I'll tell you. The supposedly great thing about Greenlake: the trail around the lake. More precisely, the illiterate masses who lack the pictographic reading comprehension to understand "walkers on one side, wheels on the other (and in one direction)". Seriously folks! Let's all get on the same page here. For everyone's enjoyment and safety. Those signs must be at least every quarter mile. I don't like weaving in and out of you on my rollerblades anymore than you do. So get your feet over in the correct lane... and all my wheeled bretheren, stop screwing it up for the rest of us by traveling in the wrong direction, it ain't safe!
Oh yeah, the car prowling sucks too.

I use to never go to Greenlake when I didnt live there, it was always hard to find parking. Now that I live there...I love it. The perfect place to live, once you are away from the lake, it is a nice laid back quiet neighborhood. Great access to the freeway and 99. I go down to the lake all the time. I tell everyone I have the best front yard in all of Seattle. Any time of year it is appealing. People watching is stellar here, you can take a nice walk, if you run or jog, you can do that also. You can easily spend the entire day at the lake or walking around. Even in the summer when it hits 80+ degrees, it seems everyone is there, but you can always find a place to sit, hangout, read a book.
Am I baised...of course!

-big ass lake, apparently that have fish in it for sinking your hook and rod into
-rent boats, kayaks or wind surf
-according to Scoot K, very haunted.
-great for people watching
-great source of exercise on a beautiful day
-only smelt a rotting fish once
-pretty clean
-2.8 mile to go all the way around
-playgrounds, docks, basketball courts and other fitness equipment
I like. I will visit again

only four stars because it is too darn crowded on a sunny weekend!
I also don't understand why people bike around it...especially on the inner loop? Really, you're in the Greenlake neighborhood and consider THIS excercise? Go on a real bike ride and let us walk in peace!
I love being there on a weekday though when you can actually feel like you are communing with nature vs. being part of a herd...If it is too crowded I like to walk in the opposite direction of the bulk of people so I don't really feel like cattle.
I'm also a big fan of Greenlake because the rollerbladers that whiz by you aren't dressed obscenely as they show off their rockhard abs... That type stay at Alki for the most part and if someday I find myself with rockhard abs I too will go to Alki and parade my stuff down the promenade!

Love it. Can't decrease the rating due to parking since I walk there. Can't decrease the rating to those who don't follow the path rules because years and years ago I failed to follow the path correctly (hey, it was my first time walking it alone, I didn't know such rules existed). So, it happens and I can let that slide. I don't like the people that try to teach people the rules with their passive-aggressive way, but again, that's just the way it is. It's just a nice walk, one with tons of eye candy, a people-watchers dream come true. Is it the most challenging workout? No. But if you walk fast enough or run, it's a good cardio. One annoyance is the crosswalk light on Aurora takes for EVER. But that just gives me a chance to tighten my laces and pick out my songlist.

The part of Seattle that I miss the most since I've moved to the Bay Area. I haven't found another park quite like it. A great place to people watch, go for a jog, rollerblade, or go for a nice walk with friends or a date. The neighborhood is great and as long as you know to find street parking instead of waiting in the lines of the parking lot by the tennis and basketball courts, it's really easy to get in and out of this park. We need to build a lake like it in the Bay Area! Shoreline Lake in Mountain View and Lake Merritt in Oakland don't even compare to Green Lake.

1. Peaceful foggy mornings.
2. Tumultuous gray winter storms.
3. Clear nights with a full moon in the sky.
4. Clear mornings after a dusting of snow.
5. Lovingly-crafted inscriptions of love (if you've ever sat on one of the benches, you'll know what I mean).
6. The inspirational From Hiroshima to Hope lantern festival.
7. The despair-ridden teenager who worked her way around the lake on hands and knees, scrawling "No Iraq War" (in chalk).
8. The heart-wrenching field of white crosses/memorials (commemorating our war dead).

The biggest ass carp fish that I've ever seen in my life. Here. In murky Greenlake.
Took a lovely walk/run around the lake tonight while trying to official rid my body of last night's hang over-causing toxins. Apparently 7:42pm on a Saturday is one of the better times to come if you want to avoid the typical Greenlake crowds, go figure. Plenty of room on the trail, and still plenty of people to make for adequate witnesses should someone attempt a Doni-napping. Perfect.
Besides the usual crock pot of intriguing stories you can over hear from fellow walkers, this place is just a people watching mecca. Sweet babies in strollers being jogged past two women wearing their burkhas, a group of goth teens walking by the chubby lady who won't hang up her cell phone, dog walkers staring at the orange sorority sisters that all look & dress the same. The mixture of people and groups is genius and is truly half the fun of coming here.
There are a few rules when you go to Greenlake, though. Foot traffic on the inside lane, bicycles and blades on the outside. Don't feed the wildlife. Do smell the flowers. Don't encourage the mating rituals of the overpopulated feral rabbit community. Do challenge the serious b-ballers on the court if you got game. Leave cell phones in your car. Don't ogle. Remember your water bottle. Park on the west side of the lake where there is plenty of street parking available. Don't let your child pee in the wading pool. Do grab lunch from Spud's and cross the street to picnic at the lake. Don't forget the tartar.

I love my evening walks around Greenlake! Even at 7 pm though it can be pretty crowded on nice sunny days, and some of the cyclists like to go around the path like a bat out of heck - yikes! At least most of them will call out a warning if they're coming up on you fast. The trails and grass are always well maintained. I kind of like the crowd factor, because it gives the place a nice community feel. Walking the inner track is nice, the hills are gentle rises that don't slow me down. Having such a nice place to walk and jog is a big boost to my plans of getting into shape. The only bad thing is the occasional pet owner who won't clean up after his or her dog (eeeewwwwwww, come ON people) but that's not the fault of the park staff - they have doggie bags and signs everywhere reminding people to clean up after their pets.

WATER UPDATE: I visit this Park at least 3 times every week.
heads up: After a new 1.6 Million water treatment (sealed the entire Lake bed), the water is great. One of the best rated Swimming areas, as the City of Seattle tests & posts Water Quality results every month. The Greenlake water quality is now testing better then many Lake Washington swim areas.
Two Swimming Beaches (North Side & West Side) have now been re-opened (summer use.)
Each is staffed by 2 or 3 Lifeguards. The West beach has a 3 meter low dive, and High Dive.
Also - there is a great roped off lake swim lap between the cement diving pontoons, that is approx 50 meters in length.
Say thanks to Mayor Nickels if you ever get a chance, as this is a huge improvement over the 90's.
PS - motor boats are not allowed in this Lake, so if you venture out to swim the whole lake, you should be OK if you have the lungs!
Just watch out for Sailboarders & Kayaks :-)

So aside from the molestation attempt a bum tried on me a few years back (seriously) near the golf course, this lake is one of Seattle's treasures. While it takes people to actually maintain this park (otherwise it would most likely be a swamp or a place to put condos. After all, this IS Seattle), it still has this rustic earthy charm about it. It's small enough that you can run, walk, bike or roller blade around it and not get super tired.
There are multiple places to play frizbee and catch or even just lay out in the sun and read. Get some lunch at one of the many nearby restaurants and eat it at the park. You can even take your kids to the kiddie pool in the north end and they can splash around while you take a nap during those hot summer days. I used to when I was a kid - you know you want pictures!
During the fall and winter there are still many athletic enthusiasts who take advantage of Greenlake. I always see people playing basketball ball or taking advantage of the softball fields. I usually take advantage of checking out the hotties. But I still get my run in from time to time.

This is my favorite Seattle walk so far. I haven't gone in a bit, so now that I'm thinking about it, perhaps I should go this afternoon again.
Walking around the lake, meeting the ducks, and seeing a couple hundred to a thousand of my closest friends that I've never met is a pretty good time.
There are stands that can be used to watch the rowing people by day and for teenagers to get drunk and fool around by night.
There is a pool and community center which, I am to understand, is super popular with the geriatric set and is one of the nicer Seattle pools facilities.
If it is this busy in the winter, it must be an absolute mob scene in the summer. I'll be looking forward to it.

There is no room and no love for you here. I will walk wherever I damn well please** and that happens to be in the outside lane at times. Deal with it. There are about 30 times the amount of people walking as rollerbladers and maybe I see like 3 bikes the whole time I'm there. Sometimes, especialy when I'm walking with other people and our dogs we can't all fit in the inner lane. Would you have us walk single file? And just leave that big outside lane empty just incase you feel like taking an invigorating lap? I might have to move into "your lane" to pass people, or I might just stay there if its super crowded. So stop yelling passive aggressive comments at me, obviously I know what lane I'm in, and if you have a problem with it get your fat butt off your bike and do something about it. Oh, and if you yell at me once you can garuntee that I'm going to stay in the outside lane the rest of my walk just to piss you off.
Rollerbladers: you're ok. You really don't take up much room and are more agile.
Fisherpeople: (or as I like to call you "fish trickers") why in the world would you fish here? You aren't going to eat the fish, the lake is supposed to be barely safe to swim in. So basicly you are putting hooks into the face of marine life and suffocating them just for fun. I hate you.
On the brighter side, what a lovely place to walk...
*note: I love bikes. I commute on my bike everyday and ride recreationaly on the weekends on BIKE PATHS. Maybe you've heard of them...
** you know why? Cause this is america, a free country. When you let 'the man' keep you in the inside lane the terrorists win.
