Never thought I would be rhapsodizing over turkey OR having bird shipped to SF from Tyler, TX...but I am doing, both! Pronto!
My 1st tasty bite of a Greenberg bird was at a party on Saturday & I am hooked. Turkey may induce sleepiness but who cares when it's this tasty?!
The succulent meat is complemented by perfect crispy skin with the most amazing tangy herb rub imaginable.
I don't know what they put in the "secret rub" but it is addictive!
If there was a Academy Award for poultry, this would bring home the Oscar!
Greenberg's ships and it surprisingly reasonably priced for a ready to eat delight.
Recipes on website look yummy & gumbo is top on the list to try, if & that's a BIG IF, there are any leftovers.
My only complaint: offering is limited to just turkey.
Can only dream of other meat possibilities & holding out hope for ham in the future...Cheers to Tyler, TX & turkey!
Greenberg has been part of our Thanksgiving tradition for many years (even before Oprah opened her massive maw and exposed the world to what is the best smoked bird available).
This smoked delight is well worth the price. I've never found one to be dry or overly smoky in flavor. I've even been known to eat some of the skin (which even the Greenberg folks recommend avoiding) to enjoy the full effect. On occasion you will find pockets of spices and herbs that overwhelm, but they're rather obvious when you're carving it and are easy to avoid or trim out entirely before serving.
I personally prefer to heat mine a bit, but have been known to forgo adding time to preparation in order to dive right into the succulent flesh.
Skipped getting one for Thanksgiving in 2008 and opted for a cheaper smoked bird. We regretted it immediately. Never again. Might have to order one at a random time to sate my craving. Thank goodness they ship.
I am perplexed as to how anyone could give Greenberg Turkeys less than the five stars they deserve. Heck, they were one of Oprah's favorite things and you know she has taste. (But, if you don't like Oprah, don't hold that against them :)) These delicious turkeys are great served at room temperature and require no labor. No cooking a turkey = more time to enjoy the holidays with your family! These turkeys are smoked and injected with peppercorn and when the holiday is over, they make for great leftovers.
I look forward to my Greenbergs every year and it is just not Thanksgiving or Christmas without them. Being originally from Tyler, I know first hand that the Greenberg family are a well-respected, beloved family. So get your order in early, because these turkeys "fly" off the shelf. Ha!
How stupid to rate a product you don't care for. It would be like me rating Brussel Sprouts.
I learned about Greenburg Turkeys when I lived in Tyler, Tx, and it's one of the best things about Tyler. The turkey is perfectley smoked, and the injected pepper gives just the right kick.
Sure, it's not for everybody, but for this body, it's a 5+
It just isn't Christmas or Thanksgiving without a Greenberg turkey. There's a reason that many East Texas families have a tradition of serving this great smoked turkey for the holidays. The combination of strong smokey flavor with the tasty mix of injected spices make for a truly amazing turkey, and as others have said, the leftover turkey sandwiches made with this stuff are epic. Plus, since they ship all over the country, I'll still be able to get my Greenberg fix now that I live in San Francisco.
Somebody sent me one of these as a gift right around Thanksgiving time this year. I had heard from a few people that Greenberg's turkeys were excellent, so we were excited to finally try one. We saved it and ate it as our Thanksgiving bird. It was pretty good - but with a VERY strong smoky flavor. You have to love the strong smokiness, or it might be too much, as it was for some of our group. It is really good as leftovers in a sandwich or paired with other ingredients that are robust enough to stand up to the heavy smokiness, but as the central theme of a large meal, I thought it was a bit much. There is something quite delightful about receiving a huge turkey as a surprise in the mail, though, so it makes a fun gift - just be sure the recipient likes smoked meat!
