I lived in Somerville years ago and always had pleasant experiences with Green and Yellow Cabs and their drivers. Yesterday was a perfect example:

I arrived at the restaurant to meet my friend for dinner in Davis and got a call from her that my car (that she borrowed) broke down on Route 16. I immediately hailed a Green Cab and explained the situation. The cab driver was very helpful and got me there quickly and safely. I said something about calling AAA, and he immediately gave me the phone number (really thoughtful!).

We were trying to get through the traffic before the car got towed and we weren't going to get through in time. I asked the cab driver to pull over and if I could leave my stuff in the cab so I could run to the car and try to stop them from taking my car. He thankfully agreed. When I got to the car, I asked my friend to go back to the cab and pay him while I talked w/the tow truck driver. When she returned, she said he was concerned and hoped everything would be okay.

I wish I knew his name- he was so nice that I would like write him a thank you note. He was very professional and calming through the drama of it all. I appreciated his help and concern greatly!

My heart belongs to Green (and Yellow) cab 4-eva ;)

A few friends and I called them last night around 12pm for a cab from Somerville to Cambridge and the driver showed up in literally 3 minutes. The driver was awesome- we had a good time chatting with him.

Later that night, around 2:30am, we tried calling pretty much every Cambridge cab company in attempt to get from Cambridge to Somerville. I got voicemails or responses that went something like, "yeah... we'll send someone soon... not sure when... it might be a while." Which didnt surprise me. It was, after all, 2:30am which is their busy hour.

Not sure why I didn't try them first, but I then called Green Cab in Somerville and was told we'd have a ride in 7-10 minutes. Five minutes later our glorious wheels arrived. Again, a very pleasant driver.

So, 2 excellent experiences with this company in a 3 hour time span. Highly recommend it.

This is the only cab company I use in Somerville now because I am always impressed with them. I dont know much about their service when you call to get a cab asap- I only used them for this once but they were there pretty pretty quickly. But what I do know is that they are by far the best in making reservations. Every time I call, no matter what day or time, it sounds like I always get the same guy and he is always very efficient. I give him my phone number and then he already has my address in the system.

The cab is always waiting for me about 15 minutes before my reservation and the drivers are always friendly. Also, for some reason a lot of other cab companies rarely ever answer the phone, but this company always answers even though sometimes it takes about 6 rings.

There are two reason though why I am giving them 4 stars instead of 5. First, I almost always have luggage and sometimes I struggle to get it down my porch steps and into the cab. But most of the time, the drivers do not get out of the car to help me with my bags...but they do always help me when we get to the airport, so at least they are halfway helpful in that regard. Second, and this is a huge problem with all cab companies in Boston, it is nearly impossible to get a cab when it snows. You would think all the companies shut down or something when it snows because none of them will ever answer their phone when its snowing, and usually not for the next few days either. I get that they are really busy, but once it took me calling about 10 cabs before finally I had to book a car service. So if you need to reserve a cab and know its going to snow, then you should call a few days in advance to get a reservation, but no company ever seems to guarantee that the cab will actually be there. Your better bet is to call a car service because they are at least a little more reliable, but its very hard to get a car from them too when it snows.

In transportation, reliability and timeliness are KING. And royalty is Green and Yellow Cab. Or as close to it as we can get in this puritan land.

Each time I call, they are damn friendly. They always arrive in less than ten minutes and the drivers are all chatty, in a nice, jovial, casual way. They know the city well, always ask which route I would prefer and I never feel like they are taking me for a ride. Yes, even as a local of one year and half, I am still concerned about my unfamiliarity with certain parts of our city, and have this irrational concern that cabbies are always trying to take the scenic route. No Sunday strolling, lollgagging or pussyfutting around with Green Cab and Yellow Cab. They are direct!

In temporary, city-bound travel, you can't ask for much more. Except maybe more hybrids.

NO WAY! That bitch did NOT just hang up on me!!

I work at a veterinary hospital and we always call green cab for our clients. I just called them for a very nice man with a cat (He didn't want to walk home with his cat in 90 degree weather) and they say 10 minutes. About 15 minutes later a cabs shows up and the driver comes in saying he's allergic to cats so he can't take the gentleman home. WTF? I definitely told the dispatcher where I was calling from. And she even knew who we were just when I gave her our address, she said oh, the vet clinic?

Then I called her back after the first driver left and asked her why she sent that driver here. She was like, well I sent another cab already. I'm like, yeah but why did you send him in the first place? You knew where he was coming. She was like, you didn't tell me what kind of pet you had. ??? WHAT? She was like, some people have allergies, we all have to make compromises. ???!!!!WHAT!!!??? I said, OK, well, why would you send him with the likelihood of it being a cat?? And she's like, look another cab is on the way and i have to go. Then she fucking hung up on me. I called back to tell her we would never use their services again and she didn't fucking answer. Damn caller ID.  Fuck themmmmmmmmmmm.

I called Green Cab Saturday, 5/16, from Cambridge Street, around the corner from Sullivan Square T station, at about 10:10 AM.  

The flaming bitch who Jennifer E mentions in her review answered the phone with the worst attitude known to man.  She insisted I give her an address # of a building I was standing near.  The corner of Cambridge Street and Florence Street wasn't enough for this arrogant skank.  

I got off the phone and bitched to my friend when another cab driven for another cab company was approaching and looked empty.  Sure enough, I hailed this cab and we happily went to our destination.  My friend, a nicer human being than me apparently, insisted I phone said skank BACK and let her know we didn't need a cab from her afterall.  I did this for the DRIVER of the cab the skank radioed NOT for the skank...

ok, so that was kind of harsh. The owner sent me a message saying they were making or had made some changes. I appreciate her contacting me & really appreciate to know that no one has to endure the stories and scenario's that I did re: bj anectodes.

I will try their services again. with friend, in the daylight and report back.

Seriously the best experience I have had with any cab company in Boston, Cambridge and Somerville. I know I am not a local now, but I did spend 5 years in the Boston "area" so I do think I know what I'm talking about here!

After waiting over 45 minutes for Metrocab, as usual, I gave up and decided to take a chance on Green Cab. Serge was an awesome driver, he took me the quickest way from Porter to South Station. He chatted with me but only because I wanted to talk to him, and was amazingly nice. I was running late for a bus and low on cash, so he helped me out way more than I ever expected any cab driver to do!!

Much love to Green Cab, you will be my number one choice in the future for sure!

The person who picked up the phone is so curt. Three words total!
Person: *picks up* "Taxi."
Me: directions, etc.
Person: "Ten minutes." *click*

Not exactly the friendliest service I've ever had.

However, the cab arrived in FIVE minutes, the guy was really helpful with my luggage, and I arrived way faster than I expected (at the cost of a hair-raising ride, but that's pretty normal for most of the cabs around here). If you're in the Somerville area and need a ride, try these guys!

4.5 stars....to be exact.

I've had excellent luck with them. Nice drivers(in the past I have had really, really rude service from other providers!!) and they usually get to my house within a few minutes of calling! There was one mishap in service once but no one is perfect and overall they have been phenomenal.

I do hope they get more hybrids though! As Donna T. mentioned.

Wow, nice scam fellas. Let's start from the top:
3:30am - I call the dispatch for morning pickup to the airport. The man on the other end of the phone was curt, but otherwise efficient at getting my info (no big deal, this is boston afterall). I'm scheduled for a 645am pickup for a 9am flight. Pretty early I think, but I'll sleep on the flight, so I let that slide too.
6:35am - The cab arrives at my apt and waits outside. Thanks for the prompt arrival!
6:40am - I'm lugging my oversized luggage into the cab, driver just sits in his seat and doesn't even open the trunk until I ask. I don't mind lifting my own bags, I'll just be less generous about the tip. But pop the trunk please!
6:45am - We're off and I guess the driver does the signature how do you want to get there. I just want to get to the airport, but thanks for asking. So I tell him to go the way all the other cabs go, down storrow drive and through the mess of tunnels. now upon hearing this, he makes an immediate turn AWAY from the airport, to get onto storrow drive all the way out in allston, the furthest possible place he could start. Mind you, we were in central square, there are much more direct routes.
6:5xam - The cab finally crosses the point near longfellow bridge where we should have been to begin with.
6:59am - Finally get to the airport, fare comes out at $35.

This isn't the first time I ever took a cab to the airport. At 6am, it's usually a lightning fast drive and the meter rings up near $25. How can you screw around so bad to tack on another $10?!? Suffice to say, I was not happy with the shenanigans and I will never call this cab service again. Stick with metrocab, the drivers are just as retarded but metro gets you there for less.

Here's an update for you: First this and now you try to discredit my review online by saying there was no reservation. If you can't find my reservation, then you have terrible backend operations as well as terrible service. You want an address, it was 35 Inman St in Cambridge. Now what are you going to do with that information, suddenly you can find it? This why yelp needs negative stars.

Since I posted this scathing (and mostly deserved, I think) review, the dispatcher in question was identified and is now seeking employment elsewhere. I commend the dispatch manager and the owner of this cab company for sincerely apologizing and taking action and responsibility in this matter. They were understandably horrified that one of their employees showed such a lack of professionalism, and wanted to reassure me that this was an isolated incident. They are not jerks! (Disregard that bit in my post below). One bad apple shouldn't spoil the whole bunch. Green and Yellow Cab are a family-owned business and seem to have had a great customer service record. They are truly genuine and ready to make amends where customer service is concerned. I'm upgrading my rating to 3 Stars (A-OK)  because of the owner's actions, and I'm going to give them another shot.

I hate you Green Cab.  Sure, if I dispatch you on a Tuesday night you will come...but what about Saturday night when I hail you down?!!??!!?  I'm not drunk and all I need is a ride home when the T is closed!  I waived down 3 EMPTY green cabs that refused to drive me to Brookline!!!!  WTF!  It took over 30 min to battle it out with the other fellow club/bar goers.  That is just unacceptable.  

My favorite part of the ride was when I found some unlucky previous passengers phone and tried to do the right thing and give it to the cab guy figuring he'd be an ok source to give it back.  He was pleasantly excited to get it, "Ohh the owner will call soon, and I will charge them $20 to give the phone back"....Is that even legal!??!!

So I can't speak to Green Cab's ability to navigate Boston, but when it comes to Somerville they are amazing! I live on a weird not-really-a-street street and they always show up on time -- and without a GPS. My friends always get lost the first time driving over, but the Green Cab guys are on top of it.

The drivers usually are really nice and interesting to talk to. I love the fact that unlike other cabbies, you don't have to sit there while they talk to/yell at/joke with someone on their cellphones. I tend to take a lot of 6am flights and they're always pleasant even at that hour! I also like the fact when you call in the dispatcher uses your cell number to determine your home address and that they don't run up the meter while I drag a second suitcase down to the cab.

The only negative I have is that sometimes you can call over and over and no one picks up. But it hasn't happened too much and usually only at peak times on a Sat night, so I'm willing to let it go.

Reviewing cab companies is kind of bogus because it all depends on the driver, but I have to big up this service.  We called for a cab, they said it would be five minutes.  Then it BLEW MY MIND when they actually came in five minutes.  How often does that happen?  Then the fair was $5 cheaper than it usually is when I ride with one of the scoundrels parked in Davis.  Green Cab has definitely earned my trust.  Check it out if you live in Somerville.

Two recent factors caused me to want to write an update.

First, right after I wrote my initial review, I received a message from the business owner, thanking me for my feedback and assuring me that they were working their best to address any issues mentioned on yelp.  Personally I think that's very cool and indicative of the care they have for quality of service.

The other is I've taken a number of cab rides recently, always from green cab, and they've always been early, except once when they've been merely on time.    As cold as it is outside nowaday, that's something I absolutely appreciate.

Thank you Green Cab for:
..driving me that $3 cab ride home when I forget where my feet are due to inebriation or exhaustion..
..having an air freshener that isn't that standard gross vanilla stuff..
..entertaining me with probably fake stories about finding stuff in the Charles River on a long cab ride from Davis to the South End..
..actually knowing the area..
..being nice and getting out of the cab (no matter how cold it is) to help me with my bags..
..always being available..
..being nice even when I'm completely sassified from a 12 hour plane ordeal..

and for not gunning it when I try and cross the street. You're the best!

Green Cab seems to be sliding. The newer drivers simply don't know the city enough to get me where I need to go when I need to be there.

But once in a while you get one of the old-school townie guys, and it's awesome. That once in a while keeps me calling them when I need a cab.

Honest, fast, nice people.  Three things you cant say about most Boston area cab companies.

Basted on an old arrangement with the city, they can also serve Charlestown - and if you live there, Green (and Yellow) cab is your best bet.  They always have a cab sitting at Sullivan, and another on Main St...so they can be to you in 10 minutes TOPS.

Another great thing they do is allow you to call the night before if you are going to South Station or Logan.  Tell them the time you want to be picked up the next morning and they are sitting outside your place when you open the door.

Great cab company.

I ordered a cab to go from Kendall Square to the Financial district. Not too difficult, you would think. But the guy who showed up had no idea where he was going and didn't even know where Washington street or the Old State House are. He said he was new to the job, but that's no excuse - you should at least know the main streets in a city before picking up passengers.

Also, there were 3 of us, but he refused to clear out the seat next to him, forcing us to cram into the back seat.

Hit or miss.  Still better than taking a random cab though.  

Green Cab has two kinds of drivers: awesome Somerville locals who know all the shortcuts and complain about funny things all the way to your destination.  Then there are the random guys who have no idea where they're going or take you the long way, and who claim to have no change for a $20, making you really uncomfortable because you try to have less than $20 but sometimes you don't and then you're like "okay... so...?"  

But it's basically worth the coin toss for the chance that you might get someone who knows what they're doing.

As with all cabs, I present a general suggestion:  

GET TOM TOMS.

It seems there is an influx of foreign cab drivers who do not know the way to the their won asses...

That being said, Green Cab has been the fastest and most knowledgeable of all the cabs in which I have passengered.

The owner sent me a message to let me know that they do have one hybrid cab and are researching ways to get greener (though she seemed skeptical about the practicality of hybrid vehicles as cabs). She also argued that passengers can choose their own routes, but as I explained, we are still new to the area (not to mention that we'd never been to Logan airport before this trip). The cab company that took us home did not take advantage of us and cost less than half the price. The owner of Green Cab offered a refund of the difference in fares and to investigate the ride, but I've already learned my lesson and have moved on -- sorry. Maybe you'll have better luck.

I've had to take a ton of freakin' cabs in the Boston area (My fist wants to have words with whoever decided the T should close at 12:30am. BIG words.). I've had a lot of sketchy experiences. Never with Green Cab, though.

They arrive quickly, the drivers and dispatchers are friendly, and I've had no cab cleanliness issues. They've also been especially nice when I've needed to transport my whiny cat to the vet. And, man, that cat makes all the drilling going on on my street sound like white noise.

Soooo much cheaper than most of the downtown or Allston based cabs. Snag one of these guys and you'll be paying at least a dollar cheaper - plus, and this is a shocker, I've discovered that these guys have usually ::gasp:: driven in Boston before! Unlike many of the others it's not likely that you'll have to be offering up your own directions as they take you home.

Took my first Green Cab the other day and it was awesome. The guys that drive cabs for this company are like 200% Somerville and I LOVE that. My driver spent half my ride bitching about people he drives to the airport who are from California and complain about how cold this winter is, and the other half talking about his granddaughter. It was just the dose of Boston I needed before taking off on a business trip. Plus, since they're locals, they know just about every shortcut around, and got me to Logan in record time!

After we shared a particularly unpleasant ride with Ambassador Brattle a few years ago, a friend passionately recommended Green Cab.  "They are the best," he said.  He was right.  I have taken Green cabs around Cambridge and to Logan many times since then and have never had a problem.  The drivers are knowledgeable about the local geography, respectful, and most importantly, honest.  At the taxi stand to leave Logan, one has to take whatever car is next in line, but any other time, the only cab I'll take is Green.

I highly recommend Green Cab.  The guy who drove us to Logan at 5:40 AM was very friendly and courteous, not to mention prompt.   I think I got the guy other people got -- the one who went to BC.
