For full disclosure, I never actually visited the Greek Sombrero in the flesh. Rather, one of my best friends was having big get-together at her fiance's sprawling country house in Jamul, and the Greek Sombrero was in charge of catering this particular shindig. Luckily this gave me a chance to taste lots of items from what the locals called "a Jamul institution" and "the best place to eat in Jamul, probably because it's the only place to eat in Jamul." Those are their words, not mine.
Apparently this business is the product of a marriage between a Mexican guy and a Greek lady. Yes, they most likely have very attractive children. And they also run a business where gyros sit side-by-side with burritos, souvlaki holds hands with carne asada, spanakopita flirts seductively with quesadillas, and tzatziki hops into bed with salsa verde to make a sticky and delicious mess. Whoo boy, is it getting hot in here? It has to be that subtropical Greek and/or Mexican air...
Whatever you think of the concept, you can't deny that they make some delicious food. The gyros were definitely my favorite -- juicy, tender, and served with rich and zesty tzatziki sauce. Given the surprising lack of good and affordable Greek food in central San Diego, having the Greek Sombrero cater this particular party made for dozens of happy attendees. Next time I end up in this part of the county, I'll be sure to check out the shop itself. Their caterers certainly gave me a lot to look forward to!
Place is the bomb. I would eat it in a house, I would eat it with a mouse.
It took me a while to find the perfect dish here... I am not really into greek food and for Mexican food, I prefer the local taco shops... but once I discovered their ribs, I was sold!!! They have melt in your mouth, fall off the bone ribs that have made me a fan! Definitely recommend trying them out.
The chicken souvalki is fabulous. the fried ice cream is the best and I don't even like ice cream. They have a tranny that sings there and he/she is great fun to watch. It's a sing along type of bar.
just so you've been warned "you ouzo, you loose-o"
When it comes to gyros, these are some of the best I've had and oddly enough they're in the gateway to the middle of nowhere, Jamul, CA.
Mexican food though... eh.. run of the mill restaurant mexican. I'll take a hole in the wall taco shop with flies on the hot sauce over that any day.
The gyros though, good enough to maintain a five star rating. Get out there and try it sucka!
I love me some Greek Sombrero. My daughter Livvie and I just trekked out to Jamul. We have been a fan for quite a while, I like the carnitas and the garlic carrots. When my husband eats at The Greek Sombrero he likes the ribs. The dining room is kinda small there were some loud drunk ladies whose voices reverberated off the walls my daughter and I practically had to yell to hear each other.
What the?! How do those 2 things go together? Pretty well, actually...
I love their fresh chips that greet you as you order your food. And the garlicky carrots are a must try. Yummy! TIP: be sure everyone tries them so you're not the only one with the hot "breff".
Good sized portions and decent prices. I've been here a few times and always enjoyed my meals.
i really wanted to like this place, but it's just not good. had the gyros (out of a box), had the carne asada (las parillas up the street is better), the margaritas are mediocre, and the service is terrible - particularly since we asked our server's recommendation and were told 'this place is on the map.' negative, ghostwriter.
The gyro taco really was one of the most delicious things I've had in my entire life. Who doesn't want gyro meat, cheese, tomato, taziki sauce and a corn tortilla? The margaritas we ordered were seriously just mind blowing, using real berries, triple sec and all sorts of other yummy things. They were strong enough to give my friend and myself a buzz after one and a half each AFTER eating so much food we were both about to explode.
Plus, their green beans were fantastic, crispy and tomato covered (usually I'm not a green bean fan).
Honestly, I know it's in the sticks, but this trip is certainly worth making!
Garlic is a god! As a result the Greek Sombrero provides a great service to the community by giving us garlcy carrots of the gods.
The Mexican food is delicious I've never actually ordered any of the greek food, though I am certainly craving some now.
Yummy. Their gyros tacos were lovely. Service with a smile! Great spot to eat after a long motorcycle ride.
