My first experience at this restaurant was as part of a series of family reunions.  My cousin brought us here because he hoped I would like everything about this family-run business.  He was right.

We were a party of ten.  Everyone's meal was prepared and presented perfectly.  Since there was a lot of plate sharing going on, I was able to sample several dishes.  Nearly every bit of food which I saw, smelled, and tasted, brought back happy family memories from very long ago.

This is not Daphne's, or food which has been engineered using indigestible fillers from China (http://www.alibaba.com...) which lend mass and volume to "value meals."

It is also not a mystery ethnic kitchen (with accompanying questionable hygiene) foisting  their product on a good-natured, unsuspecting and undiscriminating public as "Greek Food."

The Greek American Family Restaurant is exactly what the name says.  This is a dining experience for discriminating individuals who know and appreciate the difference between cultures and cuisines.

The atmosphere is open, warm, and inviting. The physical plant is clean.  The décor neat and orderly.  The menu is varied and meals take time to prepare.  Presentation and service are a matter of pride as are the quality of ingredients and the food placed before the customer.

If you really want a treat (and to go native), ask for some extra olive oil for your entrée or hors d'oeuvres ().   What I received was intoxicating in aroma, color, taste, and a momentary transport to the mountain lands of my family in Crete and Samothrace.

This place is pretty good for lunch, and serves up as good a gyro as you'll ever have, but dinner is where they really shine.

It's true that it is a bit expensive, and yes, the canned sodas are overpriced.  But in general I really don't think their prices were that out of line.  My absolutely AMAZING slow-baked lamb shank was a really big portion served with orzo, vegetables, and a bowl of very, very good avgolemono soup, all of which weighed in at an eminently reasonable $16-17.  I can't even properly describe how delicious it was, absolutely fall-off-the-bone tender and swimming in meaty, tomato-y jus.  I wanted to lick the plate.  Sweet jeezus that was good.

My friend's entree came with some sort of baked potato wedges which tasted like they had been impregnated with some mixture of deeply savory broth and lemon.  I've never tasted potatoes like that, ever, and I am now deeply saddened by the fact that I don't know how to make them.  If I did, I would eat them every single day.

I saw some not so good reviews on this place but I am also not an expert as some said they were in Greek food. I ordered the gyro combo to go just to try the place since I saw a sign advertisement that they had won some award for best gyro in San Diego. I would just like to say, although I am not an expert, the food was very good. The meat was tender and juicy and the atmosphere inside the restaurant looked nice. It was not very fancy but then again it didnt look like that was what they were shooting for. The place looked inviting and family oriented and the prices were very reasonable. I would reccomend this place to my friends because the food was great. I propably would not take a date there, but for food and value the place was great.

Executive summary: Decent food, but for what you get, they charge a high high premium.  No go for me.

    *******************
    Detail version:

    We ordered:

    1. Entree 1: close to a Shepard's pie--potatoes, eggplant, ground beef stacked like lasagna--plus some beans from a can. $18. They up-sold us on this. Similar dish on dinner special would have been $6 less.

    2. Entree 2: Vegetable dish--zucchini, rice, tomato sauce, potatoes: $12.95 (and that was a dinner special 4-6pm)

    3. Fried cheese -- kind of fun seeing the fire, but kids didn't like the heavy alcohol taste. $6 - $7

    4. 1 Beer, apple juice, hummus, and a spinach spinakopia

    Total: $80 including tip

I hate that when I pick a restaurant (overruling my husband's opinion yet he is the expert--hence he knows the cost of food), I make the wrong choice.

Maybe the day I have endless passive cash flow coming in, I wont mind the jacked up price.  Until then, I value the hard work I put in for my $$$, so probably won't be coming back here.

Service was excellent and people were nice, but the cost is simply not justifiable.  Go across the street to Savory and get Gourmet French food for the same price. :)

This restaurant was the perfect option for a delicious home-cooked, authentic Greek meal in a warm and welcoming environment.  The food was outstanding - quality ingredients prepared perfectly.

I ordered the house specialty the lamb chops which were one of the most costly items on the menu but without a doubt, worth every penny.  They are served with these delicious mushrooms on the side and a starter of the soup or salad.  Everything was fresh, home-cooked and reminded me of my visits to Europe when a meal in a family-owned and operated restaurant often had some of the best food ever.

If you are looking for a really good meal which deviates from our over-processed, chain options, I highly recommend this restaurtant.  In addition to a fabulous meal, you will find the warm and welcoming owners a pleasure to meet.

Get ready to whip out some windex and ouzo cause weez bout to hoof it to Greece, yo! OPAH!

You can't get more fresh off the boat Greek, REAL Greek food and atmosphere. We've been going here for about 9 years. That's definitely a record for me. Admittedly, a few things have changed through the years, but not the main dishes. Those have remained unchanged recipes passed down for generations. FOR REALS! This is straight up old school. Theres nothing like this in the area at all. Forget daphne's, odyssey and all those other Greece pits( yeah, I'm awesome) and head on over here to set up in Ya Ya's living room and let her feed you til you have to loosen up the belt a few notches.

First things first, it's a smaller joint, but if you call ahead they can accommodate larger parties. And the wait is LONG. Ridiculously long. I've seen dudes roll in clean shaven and leave with a beard. If you have more than 2 people eating, and order something other than soup and gyros, be prepared to be in there for around 2 hours. Service is friendly but on the slower end. Usually there's only about 2 waitresses who work the room, hostess and cashier duties. Again, it's totally mom n pop style but worth the wait.

The food is GREECEALICIOUS. For apps I recommend the skordalia, the Mac daddy of all dips made from potatoes, garlic and oil. Don't be plannin on getting any sweet lovin after eating this, cause the garlic will be steeping out of your pores so bad you could sop it up with a pita and end up getting a twofer deal. I LOVE TWOFERS! The spanikopita is also boss, and the mushrooms are so bomb that later they bring on pregnancy like cravings...even if you're a guy.

Main dish suggestions: definitely the gyros....woooweeeeeeeee!!! The moussaka, the roast chicken, the lamb, kebabs, avgolemono soup, lentil soup, FETA ON EVERYTHING, and basically all of their vegetarian menu is legit.

You will taste the love and history in these dishes. Which kinda tastes like lemon juice and oregano.

If you've never had Greek food before, GO HERE. It will not disappoint. If you have had Greek food before, GO HERE. You're lifelong disappointment issues will be remedied in one spoonful.

When we 1st moved to this area, my husband ordered 2 gyros... excellent. Honestly, the best I've ever had.... with a comment like that one would wonder why they only get 1 star. In a word... SERVICE! It seriously sucks and their dine in prices are way too high to be realistic.
The last straw was when I ordered a baked veggie plate... YUCK! It was very salty and very very mushy... when I questioned the waitress about the dish she just looked at me and replied,"It's baked, that's why it's soft." As many dishes that I have baked, I have never made baby food and try to pass it off as something good.

I will never go back... HIGH PRICE+BAD SERVICE= A BIG NO!

Being new to Carlsbad (not to mention starving) we decided to try out this place as it was not too far down the road and something a bit more original than Italian or American food. The place was cute - better than expected from what you'd expect when you pull up into the strip mall. We were greeting by smiling faces and our waitress was prompt, friendly, and honest which is always appreciated!

We started off with hummus and Saganaki which was delish - but I feel that the rest of the meal wasn't anything special. The Greek salad wasn't great - too much dressing and kind of blah, and the falafel sandwich platter wasn't exactly as I was expecting for some reason. Although I was so full from the starters that I honestly only managed two bites and took the rest home. Unfortunately it didn't look appetizing enough for me to ever go back and eat it and I shamefully ended up tossing it. Fiance had a gyro and I believe he said it was just 'okay.' He couldn't eat all of his either and we brought it home, but it just looked too dried out and un-eatable for me to try (he was out of town) so that got tossed too (I'm SO ashamed! I generally chow down on all leftovers!)

Although I have no serious or  formal complaints it was a bit spendy and I don't see us going back except perhaps for starters.

This gets 4 stars because I love:

    Native home cooking.
Service with a passionate attitude (like why I should subscribe to Greek Orthodox philosophy)
A son-in-law who cooks under mother-in-law's watchful eye.
Fabulous salads, beautiful meats, and food cooked with loving care.
    An imaginative menu.

Life is good. This Greek dining experience is excellent--especially if you can ignore its shopping center location.

This one was a tough one to rate because my expectations prior to going were high. When I walked in the place had a very nice feel. The waitress was super nice and caring. The entire environment was pleasing. So my expectation was that the food would be great. Instead I found the food to be average and very over priced. I paid about $19 for moussaka meal that should of not been any higher than $10. The salad was like something from 1970 and the canned green beans on the side were tasty but really should of been served in a hospital cafeteria and not next to a $19 meal. I had my heart set on getting the lamb kabobs but had to pass because they were as much as most fine dinning restaurants at $25. My husband had the gyro plate at $16. To be honest it was really not much different than the gyro at Angelo's.

I want to see family restaurants rise and this one has so much potential. I would recommend they lower the price point a bit. Update those salads to a more modern Greek salad and use fresh beans instead of canned.

The restaurant itself is very beautiful.  One of the nicest decors and completely unexpected from the outside.

The service was prompt.  Our server was friendly.

My nephew ordered the gyro plate - he said the tzatziki sauce was very tasty but the pita itself was rather dry, stale.  The meat was flavorful but also dry.

I ordered the moussaka - it was rich and tasty but I think it was a little on the salty side.  The green beans were also salty and were mushy.

Not bad overall just not worth the price.

This place was super disappointing.  I used to go to an amazing Greek place in Monterey and this place just doesn't compare at all. The chicken souvlaki sandwich was below average.  It just wasn't very good at all. I could make something better at home.  The rice that comes with the food was bland and tasteless.  The lentil soup flavor was good but the soup was more brothy than lentily. The tzatziki sauce was subpar.  I was overall really disappointed because I was hoping to find a good Greek place in my neighborhood.  Not only all that - the prices are ridiculous!  For a sad little souvlaki sandwich for dinner it is $25!!! I kid you not!  Absurd.

My husband agreed his lambshanks were just okay, nothing special.

There is nothing to make us want to give this place another chance.

The only redeeming factor is the lady, I assume the owner, was super sweet, so I feel bad writing this.

I'm not normally the type to complain about a restaurant; I can generally find at least one reason to suggest it to friends.  This place however left me with nothing but a list of complaints.

First off, $2 for a CAN of Diet Coke?  If you're going to serve me a can of soda then please, pour it in the glass before you bring it to the table so I can at least pretend I'm getting my money's worth.  I wasn't even the one who ordered the Coke and I was bothered by this.

Second, when I'm already paying upwards of $20 for a single skewer of chicken I shouldn't have to pay an additional $1.25 to have salad instead of soup with it.

Third, I'm paying upwards of $20 for a single skewer of chicken?!  $24 to be exact.  Which happens to be $2 higher than their website says it should be.  In my opinion (especially in this economy) if I'm paying over $20 for an entree, it had better be gourmet, so fresh it was killed this morning, made by a celebrity chef, or big enough for two.   This was none of those.

Fourth, again with that $24 chicken souvlaki platter.  The chicken was decently flavored and cooked well.  The vegetables on the skewer were not.  The onions were burnt to a crisp on the edges and completely raw in the middle; the peppers were mushy and charred.   1/3 of my plate was also taken up by 2 huge slices of cucumber, a giant tomato wedge, and a pile of salty dehydrated mushrooms.

Lastly, I understand it was closer to closing time (about 8pm on a Thursday - they close at 9) but I felt like we were inconveniencing the employees with our presence.   I had a hard time relaxing and just enjoying conversation with my friends.  It was very reminiscent of living at home with my parents as a teenager, knowing someone was just around the corner disapproving of what you were doing.

I've fluctuated between 2 and 3 stars (I'd give 2.5 if I could) because the quality of my food wasn't bad.  My meal wasn't horrible and I do have a container of leftovers in my fridge (if only because I have an extremely small appetite lately - my meal was not large enough for a normal person to expect to have leftovers).  However, I have no intention of returning here and if asked about it by friends will suggest they try any of the other fine greek restaurants in town before this one.

The place is located in a little strip mall and if you blink you might miss it (both the restaurant and the strip mall).  But it is worth seeking out.

It is small and intimate and family run.  You will meet the family and feel like a regular after one visit.  And there is value to warm and friendly service.  It makes the meal more memorable.

The food is fresh, plentiful and delicious.  Keep in mind that the dishes tend to be on the pricey side, however, the prices are posted online so fair warning before you order.

By all means, get one of the lamb dishes.  The meat is incredibly tender and juicy.  But we enjoyed everything.

Greek wines tend to be on the sweeter side but they mostly work for me.  They actually have a pretty good selection of Greek wines, but you can ask for a recommendation if they are unfamiliar to you.

Overall, it's a fine establishment which serves quality food in a warm environment.

The food is good, but there's a bit of nickel-ing and dime-ing that prevents me from giving it a higher rating.  For example, the hummus is around $6, and when we ordered it, the waitress automatically asked if we wanted extra pita with it, because it only comes with one. This irritated me -- the restaurant knows that there's not enough pita, but uses it as an excuse to get an extra $ from you rather than just give you the appropriate amount.  They charge $ for hot water too.  Dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) were delicious but there was only 4 on the $9 plate.

Don't get me wrong, the food was good and the wine very cheap. I think those small things just rub me the wrong way, especially when you're just starting the meal off. The waitress, other than the systematic nickeling and dime-ing was very gracious, letting us sample the wine and was overall friendly.

In no other restaurant will you find food this tasty, and the environment this homey.  It is completely family-run, and your server will either be Rita, the mother, or Angie, the grandmother (the father Emmanuel is in the kitchen cooking up whatever you will be feasting on that day).  When your food comes, you will feel that it has just been home-cooked and that you are a guest in their house.

It was because of the inviting ambiance that I chose to propose to my girlfriend (Erin T below) there two Saturdays ago.  Rita and Angie helped me surprise her with champagne and flowers, and aside from my stuttering and stammering, all went really well, and I got the answer I was hoping for.

Walked in and was told they stoped serving lunch 5 minutes before. There was nobody in the restaurant and the owner? who was waiting on us just sat in her booth and scouled at us while we looked over the overpriced dinner menu. We were told we could only get the lunch items if we ordered it as take-out! We got up and left and went to the greek fast-food down the street.

I want to give this restaurant 5 stars partially because the woman who owns the place is an absolute doll.  She was really conscious of the fact that my husband and I are vegetarians, and she told us about her family, her mother's recipes, and her life back in Greece and then Canada.  Plus, we really loved that, when we walked in, we heard many other patrons speaking Greek (we love places that are more traditional-- which this definitely is).

We ordered a falafel sandwich, and it was the best falafel I've ever had-- not too dry or crispy and really flavorful ($12).  We also had a more traditional dish of  green peas & artichokes, which was really rich and flavorful, although really, really pea-heavy ($17 or $18).  Our meals came with soup or salad, and we had a *delicious* vegetarian bean soup that the owner said her mother used to make during the war.  The pita and hummus were also both very soft and some of the best I've ever had.

Overall, the quality of food was really high, but it was more traditional to Greek origin and not so "Americanized," which I think could throw off a few people.  I had a traditional Greek wine based with resin that the owner swore I wouldn't like because it was so different, but it went really well with the food and was a very unique wine (I wouldn't recommend it to everyone because you have to be OK with a very different taste).  My husband had a Greek beer, Marathon, that he liked a lot, too (I tasted it, and I thought it was unique and good as well).

Service was a bit slow because it was only the owner working with three or four other tables besides ours.  As other people have mentioned, it is also expensive, but the serving sizes were pretty big.  With tax (before tip), it was $53 for our two entrees, two beers, and a glass of wine.  Not too bad, I guess, especially when you are supporting a family-run, traditional restaurant, which I'd much rather do than dropping the almost the same amount at some gross chain restaurant.

    4.5 stars, overall

This is one of the best green restaurants I've ever been to! Everything here is homemade and delicious. The restaurant prides itself on using the best, fresh ingredients with no preservatives. The atmosphere is very much like a family restaurant (casual and homey) however the dinner menu is fancy. They also have the best gyro sandwich I have ever had; the meat is seasoned to perfection. This is probably my favorite lunch spot in the area! The dinner menu is a little on the pricey side so we usually do stick to lunch. I highly recommend checking this place out! As an FYI they are closed on Sunday.

I am not sure why this place doesn't have more reviews, but the ones it has definitely represents the restaurant well. It is not a restaurant you would go to because of the looks on the outside, but you will not be disappointed with your experience. The customer service is nice and the staff is Greek, which is always a good sign. My roommate and I both had the amazing Gyro deal to go. It includes a gyro, with rice or fries on the side and your choice of soft drink for $7.95. We both agreed that the gyro was one of the best we have ever had and the rice is also flavorful. The gyro is standard with meat, onions, tomatoes and of course tzatziki sauce served on the side. If you are looking for a great deal for a gyro meal this is definitely the place!

I'm currently addicted to their lamb chops ... and the mushrooms ... and the potato fries ... and the sauce ... and the chicken soup -- oh dear!!

Try it, you'll love it!!  Oh, and that flaming cheese appetizer -- YUM!

Since I do like soda, this restaurant does serve canned ... and no refills.  I choose water with lemon, sometimes.

The falafel sandwich was delicious, the gyro plate was good, but the hummus was below average. All I know is if you're a greek restaurant charging well above average prices, you better have some amazing hummus. Not worth $15 for the gyro plate either. I wouldn't go back based on the pricing alone. If only the Mediterranean Cafe were closer to Encinitas, it's better and cheaper!

I just can't get enough of this place! It's no wonder that they are a San Diego favorite! I will forever order the Gyro sandwich, which is about a once-a-month craving for me. The fries are so awesome. Great every time, stellar job guys!

The food was passable, but it was priced well beyond where it should have been... $15 dollars for a Gyro platter is about what it should be, but $8 for a 4 small slivers of feta and some average kalamata olives?

Also, the posted hours are not quite correct.. the door may be open until 9, but the kitchen closes at 8:30.

I'll agree with the other reviewers that the ambiance was indeed homey, the menu with the hand written prices was really that touch of, well, I'm not sure we didn't get the 'I don't want these people around at 8pm, so I'll charge high' menu.

Not recommended, unless you have nowhere else to go.

Too expensive for what you order and for those people who are allergic to msg please ask before you order. Food are very salty. I don't think we are coming back.

I like this Greek restaurant as well. They also serve great dishes made with Greek Love....Traditional setting and good service make it a nice dining experience.

I loved having dinner there last night. The lamb was amazing, the atmosphere cozy and fun. I highly recommend it!

Maybe because I grew up eating greek food, this place just wasnt that good. Allthough some things on the menu are good (the grape leaves) it is way overpriced. Every time i go in there I feel like im being watched like a hawk, I am part greek myself and do know the culture, and I do not feel welcomed in the restruant.

This is a BAD deal.  We ordered the Dinner Entree falafel sandwiches - $13.00.  There were 3 felafel - 4 french fries and a 1" plastic cup of hummus that did not taste like home made (think rubios salsa container).  Taramasalata was bountiful, and they asked if we wanted extra pita so there was plenty but we weren't sure if we were charged. Oh - did I mention the owner laughed at me when I asked if something could be made w/o dill.  We were told 35 minutes - it took 50 minutes - for take out.  No apology offered.  Compared to Alborz, sorry, but not worth the money.  Really miss Daphne's for local "cheap" fix!

My boyfriend and I have gone to the restaurant twice so far and we absolutely love it!  There is a real home feel from the food and the family that runs the restaurant.  The satziki is so amazingly delicious!  I'm normally not a fan of lamb as it has the "wild" taste to it, but Greek American Family Restaurant can really prepare a delicious tasting lamb.  No wild taste at all.  My boyfriend and I go out to alot of restaurants and when we want a good home cooked meal, we'll return to Greek American Family Restaurant.

We love Greek food, most places have turned it into a novel fast food. This place is authentic, it is run by a family and that is something that really makes it unique. The inside is blue and white, beautiful and haunting pictures of Greece grace the walls along with family photos, and a mural depicting the 'Big Fat Greek Family'. I love this place because as good as Gyros are I feel that I can branch out and try authentic Greek meals here. They have great lunch prices too!

I tried it once and wasn't that impressed.  However, after reading these yelp reviews, my wife and I decided to give it another shot.  We still walked away disappointed.  I won't give a detailed description of what we ordered, etc., but just feel it's on par with fast food greek.

Adorable gem in North County.  Run by a cute couple of Greek origin, everything that comes out of the kitchen is a joy.  Their location isn't exactly prime (a little hidden) and the prices are a tad high (only reason for 3 stars and not 4).  I'll definitely go back.  Closed on Sundays.
