"Great  ride through the mountains of NC on older trains. It is also a good way to see the "backwoods" of NC. The movie "The Fugitive" was partially filmed here and Bryson City, NC.

This is a great family trip or for couples.  There are many lodging options and lots of other things to do within 25 mile radius

This may not be the lamest thing you can do in western North Carolina, but it came close for us. There is practically nothing to see on the Nantahala Gorge trip except miles of kudzu, kudzu as far as the eye can focus. You have a choice between the air conditioned senior citizens car (not really a senior car, but I reckon there wasn't anyone in that car less than 60) and the open air screaming kids car. We chose the AC so it was a more comfortable ride, and the advantage of the premo car is that they serve booze there. So we got nice and liquored up, that made it marginally more interesting. We hope this cautionary tale spares some other travelers from making the same mistake.

Well it finally happened again (only three times in my life so far)! We were victims of the ultimate tourist trap well marketed on the Internet etc. I had much expectations of what this might be (no I did not expect the Orient Express!); none of which were experienced. For $ 140. to sit in a old dirty rail car that was hot, uncomfortable for 4 hrs. looking at walls of stone, kudzu, and junkyards was not our cup of tea. It stopped at a small tourist village that offered lousy food, and flash back scenes of the movie Deliverance. The food, and drinks offered in car was poor, and very expensive. The only positive thing was the waitstaff in car was good, and the check in station in Bryson was very efficient. Also; $4. to park your car.
