Ok, let me just say right off the bat that Great Scot market is more expensive that your average mega chain grocery store.

Now that I said that let me explain why I like this market.  The customer service is great.   Every time I am there if I am in there digging through the back of the freezer someone will come right up to me and ask me if I can help me find something--And they actually mean it.  Let them know what you are looking for and they will go walk you over to the item rather than just mumbling that it is in isle 7.
They also have a lot of health conscious items.  And have you seen the back drink room?  They have a great beverage selection considering the size of the store.

Ugh. I have a friend who just moved into this neighborhood so I unfortunately ended up shopping for dinner here last night.

I've been here once before and made a point never to come back for exactly every reason no one else likes it.

The prices are excessive, the food isn't that high quality, and the people that work there are pretty rude and/or incompetent.

My biggest problem, which understandably I can't actually hold the store accountable for, is all the douchebag Rittenhouse Square people who shop there. If you're too busy gabbing into your cellphone about where you're sending your kids to boarding school to say  "excuse me" then you can find another way around!

Anyway, they seriously sell standard size jars of spaghetti sauce for $12.99.

I bought the $4 one, which is still pushing it, and I had to decide against the chicken because paying $6.99/lb for chicken breast is just silly.

The place smells. The staff sucks. And the prices are way too high.

Best store ever.

Higher prices, yes.  Surly staff, probably.  Poor selection... I have to quibble with that one.  It's not the selection that's bad, it's the quality of what's available that's bad.  The last time I was there, I think I literally picked over twenty jalapenos before selecting three that seemed like they were in at least marginally acceptable condition.  But hey, at least they HAVE jalapenos.  This may be my fault for being from California, but if I can't get jalapenos, serranos, and anaheims in good condition in the same place... it's almost too much to bear.

Anyway, as a car-less shopper, this place has saved my poor-planning ass more than once.  If I need molasses, I know they have it.  If I want brussels sprouts, my odds of finding them here (questionable condition notwithstanding...) are better than any other place within a four block radius.  Sometimes, when it's 15 degrees out, that's just enough.  Tack on the additional half-star for carrying my beloved Method home cleaning products and I have a solid three-star experience.

I sincerely hate this market. I can understand higher prices, and lack of selection. But nothing can explain the rudeness and lack of customer service I have experienced here, time and time again.

Once, while checking out, I was directed to another lane--told his was closed. Fine. Only 1 person ahead of me. Once more people got behind me, he walked back to his lane, and snapped--yes SNAPPED--his fingers in the air and pointed at me. Now, there was no smile, no joke, and barely a thank you.  And that is not an isolated incident. From the non-smiling cashiers who stare out into space the entire time and make the biggest deal I've ever seen out of making sure a twenty isn't fake, to the ongoing, never-ending stocking that happens in practically every aisle so you can't even get through, is ridiculous. I expect this kind of poor service at the center city wendy's, but not an overpriced grocery store in the heart of the most affluent neighborhood in the city. Go to the South Street market on 23rd--they are so friendly and helpful, it's worth the extra walk (bigger and cheaper, too).

I hate you.  Because you are close...and you're a rip off.  Evan is right....the prices are INSANE.
They really don't have a great selection...they have a pretty small establishment.  The veggies could be fresher, the meats could be fresher too now that I think about it.  But in a pinch...this place is way better than super 8 (an Asian market) on 16th and Washington.
But still Great Scott's...you suck!

Do you want to spend $3 on a jar of pasta sauce $4 on a block of tofu, $4 on a bag of spinach $4.50 on a bag of rice, $4.50 on a pint of ice cream, and $2 on some manky looking vegetables? Neither do I. Unfortunately, it's my neighborhood grocery store. At least they have finally hired a couple of people that will acknowledge your existence.  But I am sure they'll quit soon. Oh well.

As others have mentioned - insanely priced. But friendly, almost never a line, and in the neighborhood. Also, they have pretty decent hours. You'll never really find a deal here, but for one-off shopping they do the trick.

One thing is true about Great Scot, it's not great. I'd say its average. First thing is the convenience and that definitely is great, but the downside is whoever runs this place knows fools like me will pay more so we don't have to walk too far so they jack up the prices. Secondly they are always out of stuff. White meat ground turkey, sells out withing a few hours while dark meat lingers there. You'd think they'd change the orders around. Same with cereal, the cereal I want is always sold out! I asked the manager to order something for me and he wouldn't that sucked, but on the other hand the checkout people are really nice. If only Webvan was still around I wouldn't have to settle for Great Scot.
