Review from Sgt. S.
Medford, MA
En route home from Maine to Boston, on the only nice day of the weekend, we needed to make sure that we did something fun and outdoorsy with our 2.5-year-old daughter. We knew she'd wake up from her nap somewhere near Portsmouth, and I remembered seeing something once upon a time about this place. We looked it up on the trusty BlackBerry, and boom, we were there.
Everything Jon A. said is spot on -- inside and out, this place is top notch. The touch tank inside has horseshoe crabs, sand crabs, a lobster, and lots of little fishies, and the volunteer staff is more than happy to take as much time as it takes for you to get enough. And don't forget the giant plush fish (4 feet long!).
If the actual waterfront is too rocky or muddy for your toddler, take her to the water feature outside the Discovery Center, and she will love splashing in the "stream." As we were leaving, our daughter said, "The waterfall is my friend."
We'll be back. -

If you are looking for a unique thing to do with your kids this is a good option. Located at the end of a nice neighborhood and right on the water there are a lot of opportunities for play, learning and fun. They often have organized programs that you can attend. They are well organized and well done.

The best things in life--and the best views--are free!
Whether you have 30 minutes or three hours, the Great Bay Discovery Center--formerly known as the Sandy Point Discovery Center--is a great place for the family to have a walk, enjoy the NH outdoors, and learn a little about the natural environment of the area.
In addition to a wonderful boardwalk through the salt marsh, the Center also has trails that wind their way through the woods, a model gundalow (a boat that is a cross between a barge and a sailboat) and a lobster boat for the kids to play in, on and around. Our boys (ages 3 1/2 and 6) enjoy looking for birds, squirrels, frogs, sticks, rocks, leaves ... you get the idea. It's just one of those great places to let the kids get some fresh air maybe learn a little something despite themselves! -

We often stay at a friends house about a mile from her. We always make a point of going. Our children are now 11 and 12 and they still have a great time. There are also some geocaches you could hunt for on the nature trails. This place is a MUST see.
