A lot of people don't realize that there's an Amtrak station in Santa Clara.  They end up going to the train station in San Jose.  The Great America station is located under the bridge off of Tasman and Centennial, right next to the Santa Clara Golf and Tennis Club.  I usually take the train to Fairfield to visit my fiancee, and the fare costs $21.  It's about a 2 hour peaceful and scenic train ride.  

My only complaint at the station is the lack of staffing. Unfortunately, it's an unstaffed location, so you would have to purchase the tickets on the train.  The station is also home to Ace Train, a commuter train, so you'll see the regulars there.  If San Jose is too far for you, try the Great America station in Santa Clara.
