I really like Grassfields.  The food and drinks are cheap and delicious.  My favorite dishes are teriyaki steak tips and crabmeat pie.  Apetizers are great - love zucchini sticks, buffalo chicken wings, wedge salad... I guess all the apps are delicious.
And let's not forget about the drinks - flavorful and inexepensive.
That's my staple place to go to when I want to eat out and don't want to go far from home or don't have money.

I love this place.  Again, I LOVE this place.  We always get the seafood stuffed mushrooms and I usually get the crab meat pie and New York sirloin, with rice pilaf.  Its not too expensive and its really delicious!  The atmosphere here is wonderful and they have a lovely wait staff and I've lived in Waltham my entire life.  This place is the best to go for really anything!

The only time I've ever had a problem was when we found a piece of hair in our food, they took it off our bill and remade our food and also offered dessert on the house.  I don't really have any other problems with this restaurant.

Definitely enjoy coming here.  Visit if you ever get the chance.

I have dined here twice.  Once for dinner with my boyfriend and once at lunch I dined alone.  The food is mediocre and the service is deplorable.  Apparently you have to have grey hair and dine there three times per week to get the staff to pay any attention to you whatsoever.  I am in my forties so it's not like they thought I could be a deadbeat college kid.  I would tell you more detail about the food but it was so nondescript I can't recall exactly what I ate.  Chicken something or other for dinner and steak on a salad something for lunch.   Blah  . . . . snooooooze.

Food was bland, service was slow, menu was lousy, and atmosphere/crowd was geriatric.

I've driven past Grassfield's more than a few times and finally tried it out with 3 of my friends.  It was a huge disappointment.  Now I know I'm usually one for long, rambling yelp reviews (no matter the number of stars), but with this one I think my first sentence sums up everything that can be said about this place.

    Huge disappointment.

If you are looking for the latest and greatest this is not it. But if you want a nice place to have a tasty simple meal for a good price you got it.

My girlfriend and  I went to this place for lunch when we were looking at apartments in the area and I think this sort of sealed the deal for us.

The menu was great, it took me a while to order. The waitress that was serving us was very friendly and kind. She was attentive and kind enough to give us her perspective of the area!

The meal starts with this AMAZING loaf of bread. So good. And then whatever you order.

I have been having the stuffed shrimp every time I go. And it is always amazing. Shrimp and stuffing? C'mon!

Although, I also tried their crab meat pie which was stuffing and crab ;) and it was absolutely delicious but too much food for me.

Point is: Great atmosphere, great service, great food (and at a great price!). What more do you need :)

Great place to eat! Steak was delicious :) the first time i went, the second time i had a cheeseburger. i love to try out cheeseburgers everywhere i go, so not adventurous haha!  Thier artichoke app was ok, could have been better and its the one of things i was looking forward to.  Scallops where delish.....I've been there twice and each time im completely satisfied.

The service is great, the deocration is a lil old school but its clean and neat.  great place for family, and great laid back date night as well.  Enjoy :)

Visited this place for work lunches a few times.  The customers tend to be on the much older side.  I think another review described it as like a retirement community.  It's one of the decent tasting places to go to if you work in the Waltham area.  Service is average but consistent.  Food is pretty inexpensive for what you get.  Decor is a little outdated, but I think that is the theme they were going with?

The steak tips were ok.  Stuffed chicken messina was pretty good.

Nothing really awesome about this place, the menu is pretty small, but the food is decent. The prices aren't too bad, lot of old townies go here. The service can go either way, but recently it hasn't been too bad. I have gotten the salads and steaks here, all pretty decent.  Great place for lunch or dinner, but not really a great "date" location. I go here with the lady and her parents for meals often, because it is easy to get to. No really wow factor, but it isn't too bad.  Just "A-ok" which I feel is a fair rating for them.

When I walked inside I felt that I was in a retirement community in Florida. I guess that's how you know when something is cheap and good. Hundreds of seniors can't be wrong.

I came here with a friend for the first time many years ago. His parents had been a couple times and raved about it so we thought why not. The steak tips there are to DIE for. I've never had meat so deliciously and perfectly marinated before. It's absolutely delicious. You also have a choice of amazing sides like broiled or stuff scallops and rice pilaf, all completely delicious. And with its price tag, I honestly don't know how they can stay in business. I would assume it's because they get a constant flow of people in and out their doors from the positive word of mouth.

The service is pleasant (they have to be patient because of the clientele) and the drinks are good. Not inventive but nice and standard.

We are new to the neighborhood so we checked it out...and it's now one of our favorite Sunday night bar dinner spots.  I forget the bartenders name, but she's there every Sunday for lunch and dinner and she's great!  They have TV's at the bar which are great for watching the game, and cold draft lines.  Their wine by the bottle list is decent and priced well too.  I tend to stick with what works..and here it's the teriyaki tips or teriyaki steak.  I get either one...and sometimes have them put it over a salad or get the stuffed shrimp combo.  I've also had both the lobster and crab pies...both yummy...but I prefer the lobster.  For sides...the rice is actually as good as rice gets, and it's all I ever get.  We've had the artichoke dip which was good...and the buffalo tenders which was basic.

Atmosphere...hmmmm... not really much of one...the crowd is old...like 60+ so if you're under 45 and single this isn't the right place for you...but if your planning a family dinner with kids or your parents this place will do just fine!

We come here most often with our parents as it is a very popular resturant with the senior citizen crowd. Good food and cheap prices make it a hot spot around 4 PM.

Everything I have eaten here is delicious. I really like the fish and they have the best rice pilaf ever. The zuchinni sticks and stuffed mushrooms are among our favorite apps.

The service is fast and the waitresses are friendly. Of all the what I consider "Applebees" level resturants in Waltham I would choose Grassfields every time!

I like Grassfield's! Why so many haters? No, it's not the Ritz. Yes, it tends to have a lot of old timers (but I love old timers, so maybe I'm partial). But it has really good food - not foodie-rific - but GOOD. Solid, tasty, good quality food.

I used to go here all the time with one of my exes. I should write a blog just dedicated to all the things I used to do with my exes. That would be some list. But I digress.

Grassfield's is not too expensive, not too fancy, but good, solid, and tasty. Recommended.

We have visited Grassfield's twice since moving to Waltham a few weeks ago and are planning to visit again tonight for dinner.  What we like about it is that the food is reliably good, the service decent and the atmosphere is pleasant.  Last week on a nasty, snowy night we wanted a burger and walked down to Shopper's Cafe, which is a few blocks away.  It was so unbelievably loud and obnoxious that we walked out after only a few minutes and said "let's go to Grassfield's again."  The place was packed, but we were seated right away and despite the number of people it was not noisy.

The first time we went to Grassfield's we wanted a sirloin but also some scallops. The waitress helpfully asked in the kitchen if they could make up a special for us and they kindly obliged.  The steak was perfectly cooked and the scallops were very tasty.

The second time the BF got a burger, again perfectly cooked, and I got the fish sandwich.  I only ate the fish, not the bun, and it was delicious.  Very lightly breaded and fresh tasting.  I got a side of the mixed vegetables and they were delicious.  The salad is also good.

Tonight we splurged and each ordered our own entree.  The BF got the aged New York Strip steak and I ordered the broiled scallops.  The steak was perfectly cooked, as were the scallops.  YUM!  I ordered mixed veggies with my scallops, but this time they had an odd flavor and we weren't crazy about them.  The fries were good, though.

The menu is not exciting or fancy, but they wisely stick to what they can make well, and everything we have had so far has been delicious  from fish to burgers to steak.

I am not sure why people are so fixated on the age of the clientele.  It seems like a pretty good mix to me.  Lots of families and people of all ages.  This is a family restaurant.  I would rather eat at Grassfield's and enjoy their solidly tasty food and simple atmosphere than try to drown out the shouts and shrieks of the morons at places like Shopper's Cafe.

Okay I REALLY like this place. I come here with my parents, yes my parents, and I love it.

The menu is a bit limited-steak, chicken, or scallops/crab/shirmp, but the food is daaamn good for the price you pay. 16 bucks gets me a crab meat pie and an ny sirloin, if thats not a deal I don't know what is.  And its GOOD food. The steak was really tender and cooked perfectly at medium rare. The crab meat pie is my favorite thing on the menu. I pair it with a steak though because I cannot imagine how big and filling the solo entree of it is.  But its basically crab meat and this buttery filling topped off with ritz cracker crumbs on top... SO GOOD.  Also, I highly recommend that everyone order the zucchini sticks as an appetizer. FRIED ZUCCHINI STICKS! OH MY GOOOOOD.

The service was great, really friendly girl who was speedy and perfectly timed our food from the appetizer to the salads to the entrees. The MOD was a bit crabby, and the hostess didn't greet us with a smile, annoying little details but what can ya do?

Don't expect much from either the interior or exterior decor. Not so classy.

Grassfields may have the reputation of being for old people but if old people food tastes this good then send me to the retirement home now.

I worked in Waltham and I have been eating lunch at Grassfields for 25 years.  The food has never disappointed. The clientele over the years has changed and nearly everyone at lunch has a walker or cane!

The fish is always perfectly cooked and fresh. The crab pie, plentiful and delicious. One of my favorites is the Swordfish kabob specials. They have a steak teriyaki thats amazing. The service is friendly and tends to remember the regular customers. When I walk in most of the wait staff knows my favorite and will automatically tell me if the swordfish kabobs are on the menu that day :-) my own version of "Cheers"

The clientele may be older and the place could use an update but it is clean and comfortable and the food will not disappoint.

This location does a decent job serving up those old favorites your grandparents loved to go out and eat.   Definitely an older crowd like every Grassfield's.   My favorite here is the Honey Glazed Salmon and a side of the rice pilaf.   Reasonable pricing with good size portions.  Good service makes it a nice choice for a casual meal out.

Very disappointing....I've actually been here many times for dinner. It has always been kind of a "go to" place when I've wanted quick, reasonably priced comfort food and a glass of wine for dinner and I happened to be in that part of Waltham. Last night was different, maybe it was the rain, maybe I was just cranky, but the food was definitely not up to par....I just wanted a burger and onion rings for dinner, nothing special. Ordered their bacon Swiss burger, asked for the onion rings, was told that Grassfields doesn't have onion rings, but I could have rice, or a baked potato or fries.. Who ever eats a burger with rice or baked potato....?
Anyway, the burger was smaller than I anticipated and while it was cooked the way I wanted it, seemed too dry. The "applewood smoked bacon"... definitely something out of the package from any supermarket...
I met a friend at the restaurant and they had a more substantial meal, especially the substantial amounts of salt in the rice side dish...
Will I be back, probably.... maybe it was the rain that threw everything off, But geez... get some onion rings or I may make Beat Da Wrap my new fav!

Sometimes Grandma really does know what's best. I had my doubts about dining with the senior citizen crowd, but Grassfields is a cozy restaurant and the menu is fairly extensive. I was actually impressed by the number of options from salads to burgers and other meat and seafood entrees at very reasonable prices ($18 for filet mignon? I'm there!). They even offer inventive specialty cocktails....imagine that.

Crabmeat pie appears to be one of their house specialities because it's featured in a number of the surf 'n' turf combos (i.e. steak tips and crabmeat pie or sirloin and crabmeat pie). But I took one look at the specials page and felt that I just had to order the lamb osso bucco. Luckily, I was not disappointed. It was just fall-off-the-bone delicious, swimming in a wonderful dark sauce surrounded by large chunks of sweet root veggies. The lamb shank was so large (4 inches at least) and meaty that I could only finish half. It came with a side dish of yummy rice pilaf, and they cleverly hide spinach in the pilaf, so you feel a smidge less guilty eating a heap of buttered rice.  Also, the complimentary loaf of soft bread comes out on a bread board for do-it-yourself slicing. It's a nice homey touch.

Sadly, there was no room in my tummy for dessert, but our super sweet waitress kept insisting that we eat more, trying to tempt us with mint chocolate chip pie. In fact, she was definitely on the pushy side when it came to taking our orders at the beginning of the meal, but I just think of it as being at Grandma's house and she just wants to make sure you are well fed!

Grassfields is like Old Faithful--you know what you're in for.  I'll dine with the Golden Girls any day if it means paying small bills for good, reliable food.

Oh memories.... every time I think of Grassfield's, I remember how my posse and I used to roll up in this joint during my freshman year of college just about every week to join the elders for dinner.

But then, I remember how much I love their steak and crab meat pie combo. Now, I only really come here with my BFF, Ryan, who doesn't mind dining with the elders. Actually he loves making friends with 'em. But he's also a Walthamite and so he's used to Grassfield's.

Certainly a great date local, a special occassion place, or just because you feel like it.

Oh yes, and don't forget to order the fried zucchini!

YUM!  We always forget about Grassfields, and I have to remind myself to go there more often.  The food is delicious, the prices are fantastic and the service is always good.  What else can you ask for?

We went for dinner on Friday night and the place was busy, but without a long wait.  That was a nice surprise since I was hungry!  My husband and I were both in the mood for steak, so I got the teriyaki steak and he got the strip steak.  We also shared a Caesar salad to start with.  The salad was delicious (their dressing is really good).  The steaks came out and they were delicious.  The teriyaki steak is AMAZING, the flavor is so good.  I got veggies which were really yummy (although I'm not sure they are that healthy since I think they were cooked in butter).  My husbands french fries were delish.

Overall, we had a great night!  I only have 2 complaints:  1) they brought out our salad with the bread and then entrees came really fast after that.  I like it better when things are spaced better so we can have a break between courses.  We felt a little rushed.  2)  I think they mixed up how to cook our steaks.  I ordered medium and my steak was a little underdone, husband ordered med-rare and his was a bit overdone.  I liked mine, but he was a little disappointed.

But those 2 points were minor and considering dinner was under $50, we will definitely be back!  Our server, Kathy, was so super nice and very attentive as well.

Grassfield's is clearly the place Walthamites take Grandma on her birthday and judging by the size of the crowd, I wouldn't be surprised if the clientele came from such far-flung locales as Arlington and Belmont.  The average age, even accounting for the grandchildren, must be somewhere in the mid-sixties.  And any place where my friends and I--all in our mid-thirties--can be the youngest people in the dining room is A-OK.

The food is bountiful and comforting, the menu running toward the sort of things grandparents like best: meat, potatoes, fish--nothing too flashy.  The lobster and crab meat pie is the best and as much as I consider trying some of the other menu choices, I frequently look no further than the meat of giant sea bugs, baked with butter, cream and breadcrumbs, and served with a heaping portion of the best rice pilaf ever.  My dessert last night was a warm piece of pumpkin spice cake with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel syrup.  Pumpkin is my favorite gourd and I will dream about that cake for many nights to come.

This is the kind of place you want to give one star to, but you're forced to give them the second star because they weren't...you know, THAT bad...but they were pretty friggin' awful.

I could probably write a long, droning, serious review of Grassfield's, but let's just hit the highlights:

    - octogenarian clientele, with a menu to match. Including dribble-proof slipcovers.

    - Proudly and vocally serving USDA Choice beef.  Same as at Stah Mahket.

    - Prices that prove there is really no place to get a decent meal within 4 miles of the joint.

    - Sour beer lines = great fun for everyone!

-Fish that was suspect, flaccid fries, a drab freezer burger, calamitously crunchy calamari, and a loaf of bread that looked and tasted like a cartoon.

That said, they weren't filthy, and the waitresses were really trying.  I can't bear to give them the dreaded OneStar, but honest to God, if you find yourself feeling hungry enough to eat here, just get some gum and drive the 3 miles to Newton.

Grassfields must be a goldmine for the owners.  It is always busy, comfortable nice atmosphere. Great place for all ages, not trendy but good food.   The rack of lamb is an amazing deal (think it is a special only). .   If you go during busy dinner hour there might be a wait, but you can always have a few cocktails in the bar, great sea breezes!!!    I used to visit  family in Waltham and that was the place we always connected for a get together with friends.   Funny thing is years ago the building was a drive thru car wash!!

Final note to the reviewers who says say the place is filled with old people;   this is not a trendy restaurant with a martini bar like you would find in the Back Bay, it is a neighborhood restaurant patronized by locals for the most part, and yes, god forbid, many of them are over 55. So get over yourselves, believe or not you will be there someday too!! Until then maybe it is best you stick to the trendy, noisy, overpriced restaurants with $15 cosmos and $35 entrees.

Went to Grassfield's last night, and left very disappointed.  The previous reviewers are right, this place is the restaurant of choice for the senior citizen crowd, which in and of itself is fine.  The problem comes when the service moves more slowly than the customers.

Waited forever for a waitress (she was nice enough, but a little odd). Waited for drinks.  Waited for her to come back to take our order.  Food took quite awhile, and then we had to wait another 10 minutes for our check after we asked.  The place wasn't even busy.  Sorry, but a party of 4 with no appetizers, one drink, and no dessert doesn't need to be there for an hour an a half.  The waitress appeared to be bartending as well, but there were only 4-5 people at the bar so I'm not sure what the problem was.

The food was mediocre, didn't taste awful but everything was overcooked, someone clearly left the seafood on the broiler and the steak tips on the grill too long.  My dad said the place is known for their awesome rice pilaf, but it was just OK.  My mother can half-ass better rice on the stove at home.

I can deal with mediocre service if the food is awesome, and vice versa, but not combined.  Gets 2 stars because it wasn't horrible.  I save the dreaded 1-star reviews for the worst of the worst, but I wouldn't come here again voluntarily.

I have only been to Grassfield's at lunch but holy blue hairs.  There were a lot of canes and fake teeth around.

With that said, the food is good and cheap.  As my co-worker says, you should always follow the old people to good food and good prices.  They know where to go!

You definitely want to the steak tips and rice pilaf.  Skip the fries - you won't be sorry!

I have always been a Jimmy's on the Mall fan since back when I was young at the Burlington Mall and even though that closed down years ago this is the same restaurant with the Grassfields tag on it. You might say 5 stars and be shocked but seriously. This is the best "Bang for you Buck" restaurant in New England. I always go for lunch when home from Los Angeles and have baked stuffed shrimp and the legendary spinach with rice for $8.99...Yes $8.99 you tell me where you can find that quality at those prices. This place gets a 98/100!!
    I Duke it!

Went here once with my wife cause she loves it and her friend is a waitor.  He wasn't there, so we didn't get anything for free, but, the food was good.

The bread I believe was great, but, at the time I was trying out the Atkins diet or something, so I was against bread.  Stupid fad diets, they only make you miserable and miss out on the good things in life.

Anyway, I'd go here again to try the stuff I didn't last time.

For several reasons Grassfield's deserves 5 stars in my opinion.

Our waitress, Nacy, was extremely accommodating, congenial, and hospitable. She went out of her way to make our experience comfortable. When we expressed our desire for crispy fries, she made note of it and when not delivered she quickly went to the chef and requested for immediate extra crispy fries, which we DID get!!

The complimentary bread Nancy brought out was moist inside with a mildly sweet crusty exterior. YUMO! Nancy was kind enough to bring us a entire thing of olive oil per our request.

You HAVE to try the fried zucchini sticks that came with an AMAZINGLY delicious sauce!

The fish sandwiches were a mild fish, not under nor overcooked, lightly battered to perfection and the fresh french fries were perfectly crispy.

A caveat, avoid the crabby coleslaw lady.

The food is fine to pretty good.  The real point of Grassfields is the ambience.  I don't know where the closest retirement home is, but they must have a tunnel to this place.  Or else this place is featured in a pensioner's top 10 list somewhere.  The average age of diners is above 60 at all times.

The first thing you notice when you walk in is the smell.  It smells like the decay of the elderly.  Yet that didn't stop us from eating, and returning.  I think it's more of an experience than for the quality of the food.

1st visit - was only for dessert and I had the ghiradelli brownie and ice cream which were to die for.
2nd visit- salmon with some kind of tasteless cream sauce.
3rd visit- grilled chicken burger with bacon and swiss cheese.

I now know what to order the next time I go to grassfield's when I am in town.  But would I go there for fun...never in a million years.  It's a place for old folks who don't have taste buds anymore and can't TASTE a thing they're eating.  Every table you look over to, there are old people everywhere.  My mom actually commented that there has to be some kind of a nursing home nearby.
