We went in here for some hard-to-find supplements and were pleased to find they were not only in stock, but were on special.

South Lake Tahoe is truly lucky to have such a well appointed (albeit small) organic and heath food store in their midst.  It is a shame this place is not larger. The baked goods and selection are impressive for such a tiny shop.

The Pros:
Great selection of herbal supplements.
Awesome fresh baked goods.
Impressive array of bulk staples (grains and oils).
Reasonable prices.
Knowledgeable, helpful, friendly staff.

The Cons:
Small shop can get crowded easily.
Hidden behind Blockbuster (hard to find the first time).

The bottom line: This is the most hippie-riffic place we visited in South Lake (we didn't hit the head shops or pot co-cops though). It serves a diverse clientèle, but it has no peer in the area.

Grass Roots Market is the first place I stop when I arrive in South Lake Tahoe. They are conveniently located at the Y and carry everything you could need for a meal (sans alcohol). The staff is always friendly, their produce department is small but really nice! Great vitamin's, skin care section, and baked goods too!

Definitely the nicest place to buy groceries in South Lake Tahoe without the crowds at Raley's and Safeway.

This is one of those places that I love about the south shore. Having spent  seven years living there, I used to make fairly regular trips to this little store. There was a time when there was no Trader Joe's in Carson Valley and only the one in Reno and sometimes it's just too far. This was the best place to pick up vitamins, fruits, veggies and any number be things.

One my favorite lunches was a bottle of Odwalla Mo' Beta juice and a slice of pesto pizza, which they make fresh daily.

The only problem is that it's not big enough for me to do all of my grocery shopping at. That's why I always thought they should expand to a larger building and further towards Stateline. The south "Y" is not that great of an area and needs some changes for anyone to really want to go down there. Their small size and location leaves something to be desired, but if you want a really good organic food store, then you should definitely make a stop into Grass Roots.

Where: Tucked back behind the Keep Tahoe Blue store and to the left of the Y (while you're in the area check out the impressive selection at the adidas outlet store!)

I usually stay at a cabin in S. Shore, so when I opted for camping this time I was in a quandary about where to eat. Intending to keep things simple, we ate out in lieu of the whole camp stove, dishes, yellow jackets thing. (There were 5 bears at Fallen Leaf Lake!) We tried several different restaurants in the area (see my other reviews) but kept coming back to Grass Roots for breakfast and lunchables for our hikes. The prices can't be beat and they have a great selection of grocery items, prepared foods, organic produce and gifts. I can honestly say they have the best prices I have seen in years, yet they do not skimp on quality. I wish I could shop there every day but sadly I live in Marin.

Last week they had a yummy lowfat rasp/strawb granola on sale for $2.89/lb. I brought a huge bag back with me! That, mixed into some Brown Cow whole-milk cream-top cherry vanilla yogurt is tha bomb! My friend tried the organic pizza (fresh, by-the-slice ) and I bought an eco-friendly yoga mat on sale for a great price. I ended up using 2 yoga mats as my sleeping pad--not recommended. Bring a ThermaRest.

Nice people, good stuff. Go.

Grass Roots' fresh-baked bread is a staple in our house, and their pizza and cookies are all awesome. The produce section is small, but all organic and has almost everything I need. For such a small store, they have a very good selection of natural and cruelty-free beauty products, spices, and bulk-good items in dispensers, including rice, flour, raw sugar, barley, organic popcorn and granola (of course). I'm not that into supplements, but if you are, this is your place.

The staff is always very helpful & friendly.

The only health food store in South Lake Tahoe, Grass Roots boasts a sin-inducing bakery that produces divine bread (try the pumpkin-ginger-raisin...mmm) and cookies (the gingersnaps go quickly, so get their early), and also serves fresh homemade pizza (flavors vary from pesto-garlic-spinach on spelt to veggie pepperoni-pineapple on whole wheat).

While not as large as a Whole Foods, Grass Roots has a reasonably sized produce section, a substantial bulk bin area, and rows upon rows of vitamins and supplements.  Whether you go there to browse, people watch (its South Lake Tahoe's hippie central) or buy, it's a great example of a locally owned Tahoe business.

I love this place!  Yes it can be more expensive but they have really great specials sometimes, and often you can get produce at 50% off.  The sales staff is really helpful and they will order things for you when they can.

There's no organic section, cuz all the produce is organic, nice. Small, but well stocked, friendly and locally owned.

Nice local bread, baked fairly often.

Huge supply of vitamins and hippie supplements.

Grassroots is Tahoe's only organic food store, so that already gives it three stars.  It gets four for their bulk food section and their bulk spices, along with their to-die-for chocolate chip cookies.  Most of the other foods I only buy on sale, because that's the only way I can afford it.

Ten years ago I'd have given Grass Roots five start for no other reason than providing organic produce, grocery items, and supplements/vitamins.  In the last ten years, however, the big grocery stores have added much of the same stuff. But they're still worth four stars because their produce is better than the monster stores, their bakery goods are great, and they're committed to the cause.   Keep up the good work!
