I absolutely love the atmosphere of this place. It's an exterior chic bar/lounge in Miami's Design with an awesome vibe.
From the moment you cross the big wooden doors you feel a different type of energy. The restaurant has been working on their food and what we tried was delish! If you arrive early, you can grab a table and actually have great conversation but I warn you that later in the night it gets loud! (pretty obvious with the Mojito review Rick did)
We ordered a mojito and got great service, but the mojito wasn't all that great, a 3.5 in our Miamism Mojito scale from 1-5. But don't judge the place by the mojito, the food was good, the service excellent and we jambed with the music.

Dear Grass,
I am just so disappointed, I don't even know where to begin. We came here on Saturday night, after walking all over the Design District getting our Art Basel on. Looking forward to a good meal so we could continue partying our night away, we decided we would come in and take a minute to relax and enjoy.
You had a special Art Basel menu, which I can't say I was fond of to begin with. Then, to add insult to injury, your waiter began by telling us everything you DIDN'T have available. WTF? He didn't even introduce himself. Bad vibe from the get-go...
Now faced with the dilemma of deciding what to order from what WAS left on the menu, I needed a drink to calm my nerves, as did the rest of the party. We ordered a round and waited... And waited... And choked a little while we waited... And then finally our waiter returned with our round. Starving and ready to order, we had to beg him to stay to take our order because he was already running off.
The DJ was the only thing that kept our mood light, even though we were all a bit edgy at this point. He was playing good tunes and had us all jamming! :) Props to the DJ!!
When the food finally arrived we were all floored at what was being presented to us. The "Box of Mac-n-Cheese" that a couple of us ordered came in tiny bowls with what looked like a total of 5 macaronis. NO JOKE. 2 of my friends sent theirs back without a second though.
The BF spoke up on our behalf and actually asked them to bring more, which the waiter eventually reluctantly did. I wasn't even impressed when I ate it. The burratta cheese (which was the reason I ordered this dish and convinced everyone else to as well) was OVERPOWERED by the overwhelming lemon zest flavor. I expected it to be tasteful, but it was just too much.
Luckily, what saved the day was the cheese and meat platter I ordered. The different salami's were DELISH and paired well with the Gouda and Brie cheeses that were served. Unfortunately, this could be obtained anywhere, including my own kitchen.
Overall, the entire experience was more than disappointing. The bill was ridiculous for what ended up being 1 round of drinks and a couple of meals.
Grass, you need to pick out these WEEDS before you can be lush and green. Hope you get it together and try harder.
Respectfully,
SabrinaAnna*
"Overly Priced Bad Service"
I'm not one to complain about food, but this was a whole other experience. Food was ridiculously priced and portion was smaller than a kid-sized entree. $22.00 for a bowl of Mac and Cheese. Not even anything out of this world!
The only thing worth mentioning would be the cool ambiance and decor. Come here for drinks only. If you are going to dine, I would save myself the agony and money and go elsewhere.
Cons: Rude and inattentive staff, food quality, pricing.
An experience like no other. I go out a lot trying to find something new and different, yet everytime I'm greatly disappointed. Every once in a while someone will do something different with the same ingredient but NEVER does anyone INTRODUCE a new ingredient.
This is what Grass Lounge Exe Chef Micah has done- She has MADE a NEW, CREATIVE menu--
I go to restaurants and then i got to markets and I can replicate all the same stuff and most of the time, not bother going out to eat- BUT GRASS makes me want to come out and try something new and exciting. To finally open a menu and see an ingredient like Hibiscus Rose, or Elk, Ostrich etc I mean come on--- This is exciting--
Come on Miami chefs- try to step it up a little- Your days of Mojito's need to come to an end- and PS the Truffle french fry is not the most innovative thing out there! Stop copying each other and start taking notes-- Go to Grass and get inspired!
I went to Grass twice in November, '09. Once for the inauguration of Micah Edelstein as the new chef, and a few weeks later for a special anniversary dinner. Grass adds a very stylish destination to the Design District which is becoming the up-and-coming area for the best in food in Miami.
We were part of a group at the "chef's table" near the entrance the first time. We loved the decor and music. Plus Micah did not disappoint. She puts at least two, but more often three or more different food types together that you would never imagine with wonderful results. I always love her food. Wish I could win the lottery and have her as a personal chef!
One negative was that they charged a different amount for corkage than what we were told on the phone. But, to their credit, they did honor the corkage charge we were originally quoted.
Before we left, the staff let us check out The King is Dead, the attached club. If you want to go to the club, I suggest you eat at Grass first. It's much easier to get in from the restaurant than from the rope line in the street.
When we went back two weeks later for an intimate dinner, things had improved. There were already changes to the menu, and the dishes were, as always, great. Even dishes we had before were improved. It was a chilly November evening, but they did have those outdoor heaters which helped make it cozy. When we called earlier to confirm the reservation, they made a great suggestion of bringing a blanket for our legs. Good call.
We're looking forward to going back for their Special Valentine's Day dinner. I know Micah will surprise us with marvelous dishes for the event. And I can't wait to see what they put in their signature decorative jars for the occasion.
I'm a South Florida Foodie, and the food here is fantastic. Bottom line.
I absolutely LOVED this place. The decor is unlike that of any other restaurant in Miami - such a cool vibe. I went in because I heard Micah Edelstein from Top Chef was the new chef, and I to say I was delighted by the food would be an understatement. Everything is super light so you can try a bunch of things (I definitely recommend trying a few dishes instead of just one). after I tried atleast 3 dishes I still had room for dessert, which was awesome and all natural (I was told by our waiter).
Definitely recommend this - great date place.
I was here for a networking type of event so they had free rum drinks & apps. The apps. were good! The mojito was absolutely disgusting. I didn't see any grass anywhere.. but I didn't go to the bathroom so maybe thats why? The atmosphere was nice, although it started to rain and there wasn't enough cover to fit everyone. They have cool hand sculptures on the walls and I love the flowers in the jars :0) I will have to re-review after going there to actually eat one time I suppose.
Well the food for the most part was extra good, expensive for the uptight atmosphere that takes its "design district" location way too much to heart. The place is comfortable on the drier cooler nights (avoid in august if I were you). Lookout for Miami Spice they usually participate with a severely reduced menu and special price so you can try and see if its for you, its not for everyone.
Other people got the atmosphere right: Azn-Zen theme, grass on bathroom walls, trendy bar under tiki hut nicer than Nikki Beach...
So, PROS & CONS:
+ ok to good food (the meat dish looked delish and huge - I would come back to try that! potstickers was just okay.)
+ good and creative drinks
+ nice ambience
+ good service
+ free admission to club King Is Dead since you're already inside (free before 11 or 12 anyways)
+ Design District locale
- pricey! appetizers (croque madam & croque monsieur duo w/ proscuitto and sunny-side up quail eggs is a good appetizer but tiny - 6 bite sizes for $16; recommended wine pairing which was just okay was at $8)
- King Is Dead may not open for you to go into even on a Friday if there's not enough of a crowd in the outdoor (restaurant) section.
- weather dependent, no indoors section (but luckily it was a good weather for us)
Why Five Stars?- FOOD! -Ok Lets Talk Options! Miami is beyond famous and worldwide at that -for everything from Scarface and Miami Vice - to now Reality Shows and Celebrity Chefs on every corner! But really? When we live here is that what we get? I have to say that we are super privileged to have as many options as we do within 20 mnts of each other- but I need REAL! not just 'Famed'..... annndd OHHH MY!!! Did I get it ! Are you serious in the Design District -in a night club gone discreet but artsy dining venue?? Well YES! and how was I pleasantly surprised with: Fresh cut Parpadelle and Incredible Organic ingredients and a FAB array of exotic spices! The Actual''' International flare on this menu made me believe again in the Confusion of This Fusion that has been so sloppily pushed on us for years! Welcome Home Chef Grass!! We Missed You!!! and PS almost forgot about how awesome food could be! Thank you!!
Had dinner here with friends a few weeks ago on a Saturday night. The setting is great. The restaurant essentially consists of an open courtyard. Most of the dining area sits in the middle of this courtyard underneath a tiki hut. Very unique, though maybe uncomfortable on the hottest of days. We were lucky in that it was a relatively cool evening, having just rained.
From their Miami Spice menu, I ordered Crispy Lemon Chicken Spring Roll, a chicken entree (forget the name), and Chocolate Lava Cake w/ Vanilla Ice Cream. The food was absolutely delicious and the service attentive. I look forward to dining here again, Miami Spice or not.
Thought of Grass for an informal impromptu business meeting I needed to have on Friday night. The covered cabana like sections were informal enough to see the sky and feel the weather and quiet and private enough to have a conversation. We ordered several appetizers and every single one was perfect. The foccacia with marscapone and caviar almost made me order seconds. Pot stickers two ways and meatballs were all delicious and perfectly presented. My choice came with a wine pairing. Nice to see a South African wine one the menu. Overall I was just shocked at the prices. Seemed too expensive ($14+-) for such small bites.

There are other places that I would have preferred to have dinner, but with a group of 23 who cares… Read more »
Me and four other friends decided to check out Grass Lounge in the Design District. The minute you get out of the valet ($10), you can hear the mellow house playing in the background. We had made a reservation for 10:30 the same morning and we were promptly seated. The décor was chic, trendy, and sophisticated. It's completely outdoor, aside from some walled out cabanas along the sides. It didn't get crowded until after 11:30 which was when there was a hefty line outside the door. The food was a little pricey, but not outrageous. We had a few rounds of chilled Tequila shots priced at $10 a shot, extremely reasonable for Downtown Miami. The crowd was very well dressed, and well behaved. When it started getting a little empty (around 1:00) we went right next door to The King is Dead with no cover charge. All in all, we all had a great time and plan to come again.
Definite undertones of a night-club in this restaurant. We were the first booking of the night and the staff hadn't quite got their act together. We visited as part of Miami spice, the menu (for $36 p/head) was varied and tasty, only a soggy cheesecake let the meal down. Drinks however were way overpriced.
The crowd however was quite strange. Women dressed in face masks and carrying snakes circled the room and the other dinners seemed to enjoy photographing each other so much there were flashes firing all over the place. I suspect there was entertainment happening later in the evening, but not a relaxing end to the experience.
If you're looking for ambiance, chic, hip and great food. Can't go wrong here.
Nice evening sitting outside underneath protected area, eating drinking wine with clients with candle lit tables.
Brings back memories when I use to hangout at hip trendy places. But, I always find those that there is no lines and you can go in and out and hangout with groups of friends. This is a great place.
Unfortunately, I have a 4:30 am wake up call and two bottles of wine is all I can handle. I will miss this place.
We ordered Farm Raised Escargot, and I had a nice salad, I had the Wasabi and Ginger-Crusted Wild Salmon with spinach cous cous. I love Asian influence spices in food done exquisitely.
I wanted to share a wonderful experience I had at Grass Restaurant and The King is Dead. From the point of entry, I walked into an outdoor, paradise-like setting under the stars surrounded by exotic plants, flowers and dim lighting. Its intimate, sultry ambiance mixed with impecable service and fresh, great-tasting dishes made the experience only that more enjoyable. Whether there to dine, lounge or dance, this is a place to stimulate all your senses.
I reviewed this place as part of the YELP Elite event a few weeks ago and decided to come back and try it out on a "regular" night, oddly enough after another Yelp event - it turns out that my first review was pretty accurate - The location is all things Miami, especially on a glorious October zero humidity night, the decor and layout is pretty cool - but the place is stupid expensive -
$58.00 for two drinks - unacceptable
$16 bucks for a watered down bloodymary... no way
$10.00 plus tip for a beer -
Not worth it !!
Thankfully, we were in the company of good friends and that makes all things right - otherwise, bring your wallet and loads of cash in it.
Great chic spot in the Design District. When I first visited this spot, it was about 3 or 4 years ago when I came to Miami as a tourist. We hit it up before going to the old District(club) across the street.
It made for a great 1-2 punch. It's walled around but outdoors for the most part. Grass takes advantage of the warm evenings and is designed to make the most of it. Drinks are a little spendy, but it's worth checking out. They often host events so you're bound to end up there one way or another.
I had attended the Yelp Elite event and reviewed that event. Last night we were there as Civvies. It is a nice place, like I said before, very Zen in the decor, sexy.
On a warm night, not so fun as it is outdoors, on a cooler night its awesome, you can't beat being outdoors but...
Drinks WAAAAAAAY OVERPRICED! Ridiculously so. Really. $10 FOR A NATIONAL BEER?? $7 for a bottle of water? Whaaa? So yea at this point I probably won't return just because I can't imagine paying those kind of prices again.
I mentioned the bizzarre bathrooms, yes, the whole thing is covered in weird astroturf, and yes it is hard to close those doors and lock them. Sober or drunk.
Service? Meh.. so so.
I gave it a second chance and probably will skip it next time.
Finally went to this spot after all the rave reviews. I went for an Election Day party, which was the wrong day to go for the first time because I did not have a great experience.
The decor is sexy, however, the night I went it was overcrowded so I couldn't appreciate it. The place was smaller than I expected. The night I went it was quite cool so I appreciated being outdoors. However, on a warm night it can possibly be irritating.
Didn't get to have a drink or eat because it was too crowded. I would return if I were going to a particular event, but would not go out of my way.
Love this place! Very swank and cool! I have enjoyed hanging out here, having cocktails and bottle service before (Belvedere, of course). But I had dinner there the other night - new menu - and it was amazing!
They had this chicken salad with strips of grilled chicken, cabbage, melon and a really light dressing. It was awesome! My friend had the skirt steak which she said was yum and I had the chicken and a side of brussel sprouts (which were like candy!).
Great service & a great bottle of wine - New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc and the night was a true success!
I will definitely be back for dinner! Can't wait for them to open their inside club!
One word best describes Grass:
Sexy.
Picture yourself walking into an outdoor, starlit environment complete with drinks, good company and amazing music. Grass is the perfect spot to launch- especially with Miami's picturesque winter fast approaching.
While drinks are certainly not by any stretch of the imagination cheap--that's the point. Grass is not your local watering hole. It's not a techno-tranced out club. Its a sleek, sexy place to have dinner (surprisingly reasonable) and a few drinks. Consider it the perfect place for special occasions and romantic dinners.
*My only complaint was that while our party was eating dinner, they occasionally blasted smoke/fog from the walls, which kind of got in the way of eating.
OMG....I love this place, from the time you're greeted by the valet, to the time you leave I was treated like royalty, the service was impeccable the food exquisite.....although reservation is suggested, I didn't have one and accommodations were made immediately.
Everything about it's ambiance was inviting and relaxing, I can't wait to go back!
This is a great place to have dinner and dessert! The ambiance was sexy and sultry. With its lushly landscaped nooks divided by bamboo, palms and walls of ferns that you can feel as you lean back in the creamy couches, it really plays up Miami as tropical paradise!
Last time I was here I ordered to start a ,mango mojito & the Lobster, Ginger-Poached Shrimp and Crab meat Plateau~Fresh Lobster, Jumbo Poached Shrimp and Lump Crab avec Homemade Mustard Sauce and Cocktail Sauce for $52. Then we had the Daily Ceviche Tasting~Ahi Tuna then moved on to order my entree. I had the Salt Stone Seared Japanese Grade 5 Kobe Wagyu Beef Loin with Lemon-Garlic Oil Sauce for $81. For my sides I chose Grilled Asparagus and Blue Cheese Infused Yukon Gold Potato Puree. Delicious!
For dessert I had Chamomile & French Vanilla Panna Cotta with a Peach Reduction and Fresh Berries!
One of those new, hip places in Miami's newest up-and-coming neighborhood known as Midtown (less smelly and more pretty people than New York's Midtown). I like it. Plenty of outdoor/bungalow seating (it's a full restaurant too), interesting music, and good drinks (as pricey as most New York bars, if not slightly pricier).
Note that this doesn't really seem to be a pick-up bar, so I'd at least bring a hooker so as not to look lonely. Everyone else has one.
Many times I have grazed the leaves of Grass; roamed with the rest of the wolf cattle, drunk, with no shepherd in sight. No. Miami's Blues have never dared to show their tight shorts and batons in here.
I came on Friday with a party of 12. The herd at the entrance was bestial; in my Vodka induced state I feared an stampede. We ordered two bottles so that we could get in amidst the wolf pack -No- we ASKED for two bottles; but the bouncers apparently had discovered that they were part of an ancient lineage that linked them to King Ramses and Moctezuma respectively. Our VIP's howled to the best of their ability, but still we waited 20 minutes to be whisked to the pastures...
Finally inside, I drank some more. It was a long way to the the bar since we were herded tightly. Dancing was out of the question. I stumbled to the restrooms and upon entering remembered where I was; fake plastic grass covered (plastered) walls sorrounding the toilet -- Oh Grass, have I never told you before that THIS is the part of you that prompts vomiting out of proselytes and cougars? How the hell do you think someone feels when touching tickling grass while drunk?
The fence was high, I don't remember how we got out. I never did.
It was decent scenery and decor, BUT.... This place was not only boring on a Saturday night, it had horrendous service. we had a table sit next to us with everyone smoking, which did not sit well with us. I wouldn't think that would be allowed, but it was. It is technically outside (it feels closed and the air doesn't circulate as if you are outside. We asked the hostess (couldn't find the waiter for a while) if we could pay for the drinks we had, and it took such a long time for them to figure it out, they still had the food come and refused to let us go without paying. Some guy (Manager) and some other lady made a big fuss. Talk about great customer services skills. NOT!! We just ended up walking out. Luckily they did not chase us out with the way they were behaving. I am definitely not going again.
I LOVE Grass! Very romantic, reasonably priced food. Fun and you can party next door at The King is Dead.
You have to go when the weather is warm and perfect like now.
Very disappointing. Not all was bad though the night started good though. We arrived before the rest of our party and the hostess was nice enough to show us around, including the club next door "The King is dead." My wife and I sat and ordered drinks Long island and a Mojito. The drinks were great but a bit pricey ($14). Skip ahead to dinner, menu is sparse and favors seafood (entrees are 4 seafood, 2 meat, and 1 chicken dishes). My party of 11 ordered at the same time but the food was delivered over a 30 minute period. My wife's Marsala-Soy Skirt steak was ok. My Ginger-Lime Mahi Mahi was sent out cold yet overcooked. If your looking to have drinks and appetizers its ok, but be prepared to spend and going during winter cause if it rains you get wet and if its hot their fans are annoying.
Interesting and fun restaurant to go to. The seating is all-outdoors, all-the-time, although a large portion is covered by a grass bodega. At least I think it's a bodega, what exactly is a bodega anyway?
The waitstaff was that desired target of professional and hip, didn't bat an eye at my order for a Rusty Nail, and had good working knowledge of the menu. The could stand to do with some wine class, however. I asked what the vintage(s) they had of a certain bottle on the list and the waiter said he did not know, but that it was a 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon.
Order with a flashlight can be a bit awkward, especially as the flashlight our waiter had was this ultra-bright LED affair. Cool torch, but a bit strong.
bullshit! i came here once for a yelp elite event and that was great. last night was a different story. i went with a group of friends (we were probably 10 in total) and we couldnt really get in cause nobody knows why. i overheard some security guard guy saying something about their no-sneaker policy and definitely no sandals policy. i was wearing sandals. its miami, saturday night, gallery walk. what the fuck? so i waited for 5 minutes until i decided to jet and conviced everyone else to do the same. i dont really wanna hang out with a bunch of people wearing fancy shoes drinkin overpriced coronas topped with a fuckin lime, no thanks.
For my birthday a group of friends and I headed out to Grass Lounge in Miami, located in the heart of Miami's Design District at 28 NE 40th St, for a fun filled evening of great food and dancing. Being 5 and half months pregnant, I did my research on the venue to make sure it was safe for me to be there. The entire venue is set outside covered by tikki canopies and the gorgeous Miami night sky, so smoke was not an issue or even slight concern for the evening. Their website does not do it justice, as it was even nicer than the pictures portrayed! The array of bonsai trees, gorgeous vines and bamboo that cast elegant shadows, and apothecary jars filled with large colorful flora are just a glimpse of the beauty that is projected from Grass Lounge.
Everyone from the hostess to the bathroom attendant were extremely pleasant and genuine. The music was diverse and enticing with DJ Hyper on the table. On a Friday night you can expect to hear anything from classic 80's to today's hottest house beats and, of course, some Latin flavor to spice things up a bit! The menu was incredible and filled with a variety of tastes and textures to please every palate. Our table enjoyed Miso Rubbed Chicken Salad, Marsala-Soy Marinated Skirt Steak, their daily ceviche, and delicious crab-cakes just to name a few of the delectable dishes. Our server, Bruno, was incredible and when the rest of the table ordered a bottle of vodka he brought me my own carafe of sprite since I obviously would not be joining in on the alcohol being served. Personal touches like that are what truly creates the culture of any venue. I know I will definitely be heading back to the classy and chic Grass Lounge both pre and post-baby!
I had dinner here a few weeks ago and loved this place! I think what I liked most about it was the atmosphere (although the food was delicious as well). I agree with the previous review about the ambiance, it's very sexy and perfect for a romantic date or a night out with friends. I'm all about the vibe and Grass Lounge is totally my kind of place. I can't wait to go back!
the other reviews pretty much sum up grass. but i just wanted to let you guys in on a little secret. on friday nights they do an all you can eat bar-b-q. yeah, at grass... i know! random. but really tasty. i've been 3 times now and i've enjoyed myself everytime. it's $20 all you can eat. they do steak skewers and chicken skewers, corn on the cob, these tasty little corn breads, hot dogs, and all the typical BBQ fare.
if you like the ambiance and bar-b-que, you can't go wrong with this. it hasn't gotten that busy yet, though it keeps getting busier everytime i go.
so go before it starts getting super packed. on the other hand, if it doesn't start getting busier, i heard they might not keep it.
