Grapes of Wrath catered our wedding last weekend, and the food was AWESOME!

We both love appetizers, and the Grapes of Wrath team did an incredible  with putting together a selection of appetizers that went above and beyond our expectations (the polenta cakes were so good!).

We had read other reviews about cold food and this was a definite concern of ours going into the wedding night. Dana and her team made all of those concern go away, when the first course (ravioli) was served hot, and the buffet food was the perfect temperature.

We are so happy with the food Dana and her team provided and would highly recommend them.

I had a appointment  to meet up with Dana to see what her company could do for our wedding. She called me the day before to tell me that she couldn't work with our budget and had more important things to do.  Like go to her nieces recital. This was so rude and unprofessional, we have to drive six hours to meet with her and  I told another catering company that we could meet at that time since we were meeting with Dana. I own a Subway and we do catering too. I would drop everything for my customer.  She was so rude and unprofessional do not use this company.

**Update**  I learned last week that someone from Grapes of Wrath called the bride and asked her if she would talk to me and ask me to remove my review.  I would like to state that absolutely nothing in this review is anything but my observations and opinions based on what I saw and was informed by the catering company that night.  I do not work for any competing catering company - I'm a stay at home mom - and I was only helping out as a favor.

I helped out a wedding at the Old Whaling Station Adobe house and Grapes of Wrath handled the catering.  I had not been in attendance to any meetings beforehand so my observations are based solely on the hours before the event and a few hours into the event.

The staff was very friendly and were very efficient in setting up the tables and bar area.  However, once the event started I noticed that they hadn't really changed clothes except for adding vests to their white shirt black pants ensemble.  Some were in really grungy tennis shoes, girls with long hair not pulled back, black aprons were filthy looking.  Mostly they looked pretty unprofessional.

After the ceremony the chairs were moved and then the tables were set where the ceremony took place.  The tables all had specific numbers and a diagram was supplied to the caterer, but tables were out of order.  Wouldn't have been a big deal expect the table that was mistakenly put near the back was where the mothers & fathers of the bride & groom were sitting.

During the cocktail/app time it was discovered that they were serving both the wine that should have been reserved for dinner and the sparkling cider which was reserved for the toast only.  About the time that the buffet should have been set up I was informed that the food was not present.  They had loaded another party's food and the other party had our food.  The location of the other event was 30-45 minutes away and they were just then trying to fix the issue.

I worked for one of the top 5 catering companies in the Bay Area and while I don't expect everyone to live up to those standards I do expect things like having the correct food and having staff that look professional and clean at an event.

I'm unsure how you can bring the wrong food to an event.  Not just one or two dishes, but the entire menu.  Mostly, I don't understand how this mistake wasn't at least caught earlier than right before dinner.  Maybe it's because none of the food was cooked or prepared on site (which is definitely something that would have turned me away) or maybe it was because none of the staff unloading knew what the menu was for the evening?  I'm not sure.

Of course, I'm not saying that mistakes don't happen at events.  I've seen my share of crazy things happen, but missing an entire menu?  Sloppy and disheveled servers....not my cup of tea.

My wife and I were married on October 29th and all i have to say is that everything went perfect. Grapes was amazing, we honestly were just looking for food that was a good base for people so they wouldnt get sick drinking. We were blown away, while i didnt get to eat that much (was a little busy) , my guests all raved about how good the food was. Another great thing was that they set up and cleaned up, which no bride or groom, or family member wants to clean up after the event. They truly made the wedding relaxing and made sure we did not have a thing to worry about while the wedding was going on.

I have read some of the reviews on this page and really in my observation  there are a lot of Bridezillas out there. GOW staff was amazing, the bar tender was great. I cant remember if he had a tip jar or not, but my thought on that is why not. Yes we payed gratuity to GOW, but my guests didnt, if they want to put money out for "free" drinks let them. Why do i care if he puts a jar out. If i was offended by it, i wouldnt put in any money. With that said i dont think he had a jar out.

I would honestly tell anyone that is planning to get married in Monterey to use GOW, they are amazing and very helpful. If i could guve more than 5 stars i would!

Grapes of Wrath catered our April wedding that the Holly Farm - they put on a great spread of food and had a lot of really cool dishes for us to choose from. On the wedding day itself, they were totally on the ball - the service was impeccable and well organized, and no one was wanting for food at the end!

I wish that hubby and I could have enjoyed the appetizer stations because everyone really loved that. Grapes were also super accommodating in meeting our request to swap out the regular bread for naan bread with raita to match our curry, and making sausage rolls for appetizers (although they were american "pigs in blanket" and not the british version we were hoping for).

However a few small picky things - the food was cold when it was served (even though its buffet, could have been warm!) and there were a few small details that were missed (blue cheese on the salad when we specifically wanted feta; taking a few months to refund coffee that we didn't have). I also really wish that they would have done an individual tasting with us beforehand so that we could be sure of exactly what we wanted and work out the small details - I do understand that with a huge volume of work it is hard to do individual tastings, but it would be nice!

All in all, very happy with the service - Dana and Tamie are really easy to work with - albeit a bit disorganized sometimes - and I think our guests enjoyed our food and the great service.

Worst experience ever! My husband and I got married at the Holly Farm a couple years ago. I've been meaning to write this review for years as I am still steaming from the experience. Love the Holly Farm (amazing property and people) but for as much as we spent having our wedding there, I am still upset that we were forced to continue working with Grapes of Wrath after the nightmares we experienced early on in the planning process. When I finally complained to Holly Farm, we still had time to choose another caterer - but we were forced to use them.

Specifics on the experience with Grapes of Wrath: unbelieveably unorganized, missed/late to appointments (after I had driven over an hour to meet), did not return phone calls, failed to send contracts/paperwork when promised (I am talking over a week late), failed to send revised contracts with the appropriate changes we had spent hours reviewing beforehand, the list goes on and on...just an absolute nightmare. I would never, ever use them or ever choose a venue that required me to work with them. Frankly, I'm surprised they are still in business.

I'm going to cut straight to the point: If you are planning a wedding at Memory Garden, use the Grapes of Wrath as your caterer. Dana did so much more than just provide us with amazing food, she really, truly gave us peace of mind. Now i know that might sound cliche and i feel kinda corny for saying it, but let me relate a little bit of our experience.

We met Dana over a year before our intended wedding date. at the time that we met her, we didn't have our minds made up on a venue, so we were coming to Monterey to check out Memory Garden and go to a tasting for TGoW. After being wowed by the food at the tasting, we got a few mins to sit and chat with Dana. We told her we were thinking of doing our wedding at Memory Garden sometime in the spring of 2010, at which point, she pulled out a diagram of the layout of the garden and explained exactly how she does her weddings there, and believe me, she has it down to a T.

This is where the peace of mind starts to come in. You see, Dana wasn't only our caterer, she turned out to be our event planner. She explained to us how everything could work out if we wanted to have a wedding at MG and the fact that she has so much experience working at that venue sold us on both TGoW and Memory Garden. Since Dana can provide a lot of the supplies in addition to the food (tables, dance floor, linens, heaters, etc.), it takes a lot of the guesswork out of the planning, and therefore, takes out a lot of the work.

Also during that first meeting, Dana related a little bit of advice to my wife and I that really stuck with us and helped us to enjoy our wedding; as our wedding was more than a year off at that point, she told us, more or less "don't think about the wedding every single day and stress out over it, this is going to the be biggest party that you ever throw and you want to be able to enjoy it. If you think about it every day from now until it it comes, you'll just be miserable". That really stuck with us and as it turns out, we didn't obsess over it and we really did enjoy it.

As for the day of, it couldn't have run smoother. The food was delicious, everything ran seamlessly, the servers were on point, and it really did turn out to be one of the best days of my life. Thank you so much for everything Dana

Oh, and before i forget, I highly recommend 2 things that were a smash success at our wedding: sangria and taco bar. Very important!

I can't say enough good things about Grapes of Wrath. They catered my wedding at the Holly Farm in Carmel a few months ago, and I couldn't have been happier. A few highlights:

    1. Dana and Tamie (the owners) are really fun and easy to work with. They're very professional, and (more importantly) they are very good at what they do. We worked with Dana to design our menu, and after asking us a few quick questions she basically suggested a menu that was perfect for what we wanted. Everything tasted fantastic, and the meal was really fun--nothing like the usual boring wedding food.

    2. They're completely full-service. GOW caters the event, but they also help run it on the day-of. Dana and Tamie worked with Erin, the Holly Farm wedding planner, to make sure we were all always on the same page and everything went perfectly. GOW does all the events at the Holly Farm and they have the same staff at every event throughout the summer, so they really know what they're doing.

    3. They're actually a really great deal. I can't remember specifics about the pricing, but they don't nickle-and-dime you like other caterers do. You don't pay, for example, by the crab cake (or whatever) or for each additional appetizer you add to your menu. They charge a per-person fee, and you have a lot of flexibility to tweak your menu without affecting the cost too much.

    5. They make everything easy. I had some strange requests--my family is really obsessed with a few dishes from various restaurants in my home town, so I wanted to serve them at the wedding. After they were delivered, GOW integrated them into the meal and made sure they were presented perfectly.

Anyway, the bottom line is go with GOW--I promise you won't regret it.

In June 2010, we married at the Holly Farm in Carmel. Grapes of Wrath is the exclusive caterer, which seems to leave no choice but I will also add leaves no disappointment.

We hired Grapes of Wrath for Rehearsal Dinner, Main Event and Brunch the next day. Every meal was excellent and well presented, I come from a fairly picky family of 5 Star Travellers and Eaters. Their prices are reasonable, I would say commensurate with the quality.

Grapes of Wrath is extremely attentive to the client needs. In our case, they even purchased new serving bottles to house vodka on every table, (Russian wedding) and made our first toast with family (vodka, caviar) right after the ceremony exactly as we envisioned. All the food they prepared tasted amazing, very current cuisine, with attractive presentation. They allowed us to source our own caviar (Tsar Nicoli) and served it our specifications.

Grapes of Wrath is very creative and even helped chose our linen colors. Both my husband and I think they did an exceptional job and employed a wonderful staff. Everyone at Grapes of Wrath is very warm and caring and their involvement went beyond just food, they helped coordinate so much of the day at the Holly Farm. We would not hesitate to hire Grapes of Wrath again or recommend them to anyone.

Grapes of Wrath did such an amazing job for our wedding last weekend!  Everyone commented on how delicious the food was!  (and when do you ever hear that at a wedding?) The staff was amazing from start to finish and they were all absolutely fabulous to work with.  From the first time we met Dana and Tamie until the end of the wedding night when the staff was sending us home on t with a beautiful keepsake platter of food (which we ate, happily, sitting in bed sharing our favorite moments of the night!) Grapes of Wrath have been the BEST!
I can not recommend them highly enough.  They made our day wonderful, seemingly effortless, beautiful, and delicious,

We got married on Sept 19th at the Memory Garden in Monterey.  We chose Grapes of Wrath as our caterer.  From the very start we were very impressed.  We were up front with Tamie and Dana that we were on a budget and needed to keep the cost as low as possible.  This is not easy for a wedding with 150 people.  From the start they helped us by giving us quite a few ideas on how to keep the costs down, many of which we used for our wedding.  Tamie sat down with us and planned out the menu, table settings, and the timing for the entire evening.  The Grapes of Wrath was basically our wedding coordinator but didn't charge us extra for that service.

We were extremely pleased with the job that they did at our wedding.  The food was excellent and the service was amazing.  The h'orderves were delicious.  The dinner buffet was great, the Castroville chicken and the grilled vegetables were perfect (special kudos from our vegan friend, who said the food was fabulous!)  We received a lot of compliments on the food.   Even my dad commented on how fabulous the crab cakes were (and he is difficult to please!)

Justin, who was running the show the night of our wedding, did a fantastic job, keeping us on schedule and making the wedding go very smoothly.  He was also very good at interacting with the families and guests, we got a lot of compliments on the crew and how nice they were and how quickly they responded to requests.

Our wedding was great in part because the Grapes of Wrath ran the show just like they said they would and we got to have a wonderful stress free evening to celebrate with our family and friends.  We definitely highly recommend the Grapes of Wrath to anyone who is looking for a caterer.

Well. I am torn. 5 stars for the food. I mean it was the best wedding food anyone can ask for actually. People are still talking about how FRESH, DELICIOUS and ORIGINAL the food options were.  In fact, Dana even brought out fresh Thai basil from her garden the morning of our wedding and put a spring of it on EVERY plate of Caprese salad.  People's eye were bugging out of their heads when they tasted the salads and wheatberry rice dish and the olive rolls freshly baked and all the local veggies and even local organic beef.
They even made a tofu dish no extra charge just for my husband who does not eat meat!
They set up our dessert bar for us even though we brought in dessert from a different vendor. It was gorgeous with flowers and perfect lighting and silver platters and cake plates, etc. REALLY classy with attention to detail.
And the food was so obviously local california cuisine.

The reason they get in between 3 and four stars is because they are total space cadets and tough to deal with. They dont call you back or forget what you asked for or send the wrong invoice. If they had a business mind working with them, they would be phenomenal caterers. The food is superior to others, and they let that speak for itself. But, trying to do business with them is aggravating and frustrating.   Would I recommend them?  Yeah because their food is so good and they are nice people. You just have to have patience and be zen, which I am not when I am planning a wedding.

Grapes of Wrath did the food for our June wedding.

    1. Delicious food, wonderful setup.  The food was fantastic.  They were good about dietary details, such as putting cheese on the side for me since I'm lactose intolerant.  Their appetizer setup is great - we chose a Mediterranean griddle with really yummy toppings and they did a great antipasto and cheese bar.

    2. They are occasionally slow in responding to phone messages or e-mail, but I think that's because they're so busy.  You'll realize that they pretty much act as a free wedding planner - we met with both Dana and Tamie on separate occasions and they were so organized and helpful with details we hadn't even considered.  They were really patient with our questions - for people who work with picky brides all the time, they were so calm and cheerful.  If you go to their office, they have fun linen samples you can play with.

    3. The total cost ended up a little over what we expected, but that's probably because I didn't factor in the cost of place setting rentals etc.  They don't charge per appetizer or some such nonsense, just per head.  They can also arrange linen rentals and set up for the reception (we had our wedding at Monterey Museum of Art at La Mirada).  We got a ton of amazing food for a reasonable price.

Overall, they do a great job and our guests were impressed with the presentation and quality!

We used Grapes of Wrath for our wedding a few weeks ago and it was great.

Our wedding was held at OWS adobe and it was a choice between catering ourselves or going with GOW.  I was absolutely in love with the location, so I was going to make it work, either way. I work in the restaurant business and was reticent to use them as I felt they were a bit pricey ( they originally quoted us bottom price about 5 grand for 50 ppl).  Now, I'm lucky I have a mom who is fortunately able to spend money where she wants freely, and she insisted on using them and taking the cost hit.  I am really glad she did because they did an amazing job and I could not have imagined doing all that work.

Overall, they did an amazing job, set up to break down I didn't have to worry about a thing, and the food was delicious.  They don't just cater the orchestrate the entire event, and not one thing was left to chance; it was all very well planned.  Also, the transition between the ceremony and reception was flawless, they completely transformed the place in about a minute, amazing!

The biggest issue we had was with the bartender, who was actually kind of rude and several people(including my husband) came to me afterwards about it. First he put out a tip jar.  Now, GOW includes gratuity in their cost, PLUS the staff is making about 20 an hour aside from that.  My mom, bless her heart, had envelopes with $50 for all the staff members as an additional gratuity.  The bartender put out a tip jar, which made us all angry, because even though GOW was pricey, we went out of our way to make sure the staff was well taken care of, and then he sets up a tip jar! now, maybe he felt like he could make more money off the guests, but it's a wedding, not a club, and it was a little greedy of him in my opinion. Second, he opened several wine bottles in advance after we asked him not to.  I'm a sommelier, and we provided all the wine ourselves, so we wanted to be conservative about the opening incase we had extra.  My husband confronted him about over-opening and his response was "I know what I'm doing, I've been doing this a long time".   Well, so have we, in fact, I've been working in restaurants for about 10 years, so that comment was really unappreciated. Rude!

We ended up adding a bunch of things, more people, an ice cream sundae bar, a german sausage station and other things so we added a couple grand more to the bill.  Maybe I'm crazy, because I know weddings are pricey and we did have our wedding in July, but I still think that they were a tad on the pricey side.  If you have the money, go ahead and spend it, they did an amazing job.  If you are trying to be thrifty, maybe rethink your strategy.

My husband and I were married in August and GOW did our wedding reception at the Old Whaling Station Adobe. The day of the reception, the day-of-event staff was great, the food was good, everything went flawless.

The months leading up to the wedding, however, we're frustrating. They (meaning Dana & Tammy) rarely respond to emails or phone calls (Even the voicemail we left them reminding them our final balance was due and we needed to give them our CC) and your best chance of getting an answer to anything in a timely matter is to catch them on the phone.

Don't try to set up phone conferences with them either, Dana suggested we have a phone conference with them one Saturday to discuss our final menu and fabric decisions. We thought it was a nice option so we would not have to drive down to Pacific Grove. Needless to say at this point, no one was there to answer our phone call, so we called the cell phone #s listed on the machine, no answer there either and no phone calls back to our voicemails.

I get that they have a lot of customers, but they could at least be more organized and respond back to their clients. They gave me the impression that they did not value us.

Three stars for their day-of-event staff and the food.

We went to a tasting at Grapes of Wrath while we were deciding on caterers, and after tasting their food we were INSTANTLY in love. The people here are totally friendly and welcoming, and they were an absolute pleasure to work with. On top of that, their homemade guacamole and chips are totally insanely delicious. We're going to stop by on our way back up during a tasting just to taste it one more time! They made a menu everyone at the wedding loved, and I can definitely recommend them to anyone, 110%. Thank you Grapes of Wrath!

Grapes of Wrath were the caterer for my wedding on March 6, 2010 and they were fantastic!  From the initial consultation until the thoughtful thankful card we received from them after the wedding was over I was impressed.

Grapes of Wrath was recommended to me by a friend.  I was an out of town bride (living in New Jersey and getting married in Monterey), so I was unable to actually taste their food before the event since they only do tastings once a month, but my friend's recommendation couldn't have been better.  Everyone raved about the food.  We had a sit-down dinner of 90 people serving 3 different dishes (fish, beef, and vegan).  Everyone's food was served timely and was hot.  Considering we were married at La Mirada which doesn't have a kitchen this was impressive.

They were also great to work with.  Very easy-going and relaxed.  They listened to what I wanted and stayed within my budget.  We communicated mostly through email (because of the distance) which worked great.

The night of the wedding, the service staff were friendly and everything went together so smoothly.

I would recommend Grapes of Wrath for sure!

GoW catered our wedding at The Holly Farm in August.  We went to one of their open houses (typically the last Sunday of each month), where we met Dana and Tamie, who were both super energetic, patient and accommodating.  We did experience a bit of disorganization and a few long (1-1 1/2 weeks) lapses during email and phone correspondence (in their defense, this happened during July, the busiest time for them of the year).  However, when the day came, GoW did a phenomenal job of catering our wedding.  The staff was fantastic, the place settings were impeccable and the guests are still raving about the food.  We ended up selecting the lamb, fig stuffed pork chops, butternut squash ravioli with butter sage sauce, hippie wild rice salad and their signature salad.  Of those items, the lamb, ravioli and signature salad were the standout items, but really, everything was delicious.  The mojitos were a hit (and unfortunately, ran out during the reception) and the appetizers (namely the tostadita griddle) were an elegant and fun way to serve hors d'oeuvres in place of the typical waiters and platters style.  GoW excels at what they do and really go out of their way to accommodate your preferences and style.  They've got a great mix of easygoing attitude, high energy and professional expertise!

Grapes of Wrath catered our wedding in June at the Henry Miller Library- and did a fantastic job.  Months later, I am still hearing our guests talk about how fantastic the food was.  Perhaps even more important than the fact they provided seriously great food for a large event at a site without a kitchen, is that my husband and I didn't have to worry about a thing on the day of the wedding.

From our first meeting with GOW, I was amazed at how helpful they were for wedding planning in general and how creative they were.  They had great ideas for meeting our budget while getting just what we wanted, and great perspective on what made sense to do ourselves and what NOT to do on our own.  We really got to spend our wedding planning time focusing on what mattered to us, and ended up with the most fantastic experience i can imagine.

While we did the decorations for our wedding, GOW helped set everything up and the display of the food, bar and other areas was seriously fantastic.  GOW also kept events moving throughout the night- something that I really didn't want to think about.

Lastly, Tamie and GOW staff were really fun to work with and really seemed to care about the quality of their services.  I feel very thankful for all they did to help create such a great day....

Dana and all of the Grapes of Wrath staff are AWSOME.  My son was married on Satureday.  We had planned an outdoor wedding, but a week before http://weather.com started predicting rain.  Dana found us an alternate site for the reception, but worked with us to get a tent so that we could keep the wedding at the Old Whaling Station.  It was wonderful.  Dana went WAY beyond the call of duty to make sure that we were happy and that the site was beautiful.  On top of all that the food was delicious, all of the guests loved it.  I HIGHTLY recommend Grapes of Wrath catering.  The food, and the therapy - were incredible!

Grapes of Wrath was the basis for all of our wedding planning . We chose the Old Whaling Station as our site, so Grapes of Wrath came with it since they are the OWS's exclusive caterer. We never regretted that as our only option. Throughout the wedding process Dana and her staff were professional and true experts in their field. We attended a food and wine tasting which I would recommend for anyone considering Grapes because you will fall in love with their tasty and delicious food. I liked the way Grapes made everything simple and easy and worked within our budget. At no point did I feel pressured to do more than we could afford. On our wedding day GOW staff was courteous and professional. They did everything they said they would do and were great at it. The only thing I would say was a little off was the tostadita griddle service. At the tasting the tostaditas were more like tacos which we loved, however, on our wedding day I think they were trying to do tostadas and the tortillas were hard and chewy instead of either toasty or soft. I would have liked the same we had at the tasting which were soft. I tried to tell the tostadita chef just to cook the tortillas a little more but he said that's the way they were supposed to be, oh well. I grew up heating, cooking and eating tortillas so I thought a suggestion wouldn't hurt. Anyway, other than that., everything was wonderful and I would definitely recommend them to anyone who was looking for a laid-back, low-key caterer who is not pushy and who listens to what you actually want. Thanks Dana and staff!

Grapes of Wrath catered our wedding in July 2009 at the Holly Farm.  I loved working with Tammy and Dana.  The food was incredible, their prices were very reasonable, and they were a delight to work with.  They have an open house once I month (I think), so you can try them out before hiring them.   I'm very happy I used them for our wedding.

Grapes of Wrath did a wonderful job for my daughter's wedding two weeks ago. The staff and service were excellent, they listened to everything we wanted for her special day. The food was excellent, many of the guests commented on how delicious it was. My daughter and her husband are cooks themselves and felt that the food was wonderful, overall a great experience with Grapes of Wrath, I would recomment their service again.

What a CROCK!!! Totally unorganized and unprofessional.  I called 2 weeks ahead to make an appointment to come meet with someone and do an initial consultation.  I spoke with Dana the manager/owner.  At the time she seemed a little flighty but I thought I would give them a chance. I called about half an hour before my appointment to confirm and get the address to where we were to be meeting and Dana asked if we had done a budget.  A little peeved at her lack of knowledge (even though we had spoken at length and done an in depth discussion on the phone).  She seemed to have no notes or no information about the client about to come in.  When I arrived at the office Dana was sitting with another couple discussing wedding options.  I was shocked.  She asked us rudely who we were and if we had an appointment.  When I explained we were her 12 o'clock who had called to confirm only 30 minutes earlier she embarrassingly admitted she thought the couple sitting with her was the couple on the phone even though I had again told her our names when I called...did she not ask this walk in couple there names??? Rather than asking these people to make an appointment for later she asked US to re-schedule.... Seriously !!! When I explained that I had driven 90 minutes for this appointment she offered to let us go up to the reception hall on our own to look around as a wedding was currently being set up.  The lack of organization made me go no further with this company.  If you cant even get my initial appointment right on your calendar how can I put something as important and expensive as my wedding in their hands.  Not to mention if it was my wedding I would not want people wandering around asking questions and interrupting the people who are supposed to be setting up my event, unsupervised.  I am SORELY disappointed in this business and would definitely NOT recommend them to anyone looking for a caterer and reception venue.
