LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place!

My cousin lives nearby and introduced me to Grant's Market on one sunny afternoon! She said that Grant's makes the best sandwiches around. Sandwiches?! I'm there!

Grant's is a cute, little shop with a huge selection of wine, beer, chips, imported cheese, gelato, Boar's Head deli meat, Bread & Cie bread, fresh salads, bagels, hot/cold coffee drinks, you name it! The people here are super nice and the food is consistent every time!

Every time I come here, I order the same sandwich: The Californian on sourdough (turkey, cheese, avocado and the works on any type of bread). The also have a good selection of bottled root beer. My FAVORITE is Henry Weinhard's Root Beer.

Be a S.L.O.B and visit Grant's! You won't be disappointed! :)

Grant's is a great spot in one of the neighborhoods I love! First discovered it after stopping in at Halcyon tea.  It's a small grocery plus deli, and while it's not the best as far as prices go for regular grocery shopping, it's convenient for stopping in on the go.  Had a roast beef sandwich from their deli counter, and the bread, meat and everything else was really fresh and delicious!

Grant's has a nice selection of wines, as well.  This is a perfect pit stop for a spur-of-the-moment picnic.

Four solid stars for this deli (no opinion on the little market because we were just there for lunch).

I stopped in here with my mom last weekend and was pleasantly surprised by the friendly service (sometimes local hipster-y places like this can make you feel like a fish out of water if you aren't a regular) and on-point sandwich selection.

I had the caprese on a roll (seriously orgasmic sammich with wet buffalo mozzarella, fresh basil, ripe tomatoes, olive oil and balsamic vinegar -- OH MY) and my mom had the marinated chicken breast on sourdough with lettuce, tomato and warm melty cheese. Both were good-sized, had fresh ingredients and satisfied us for the entire day.

The best part about having lunch at a little local place like this is that I always feel so righteous afterwards -- I supported a local place, I ate healthy food with fresh ingredients and I didn't spend too much! (It was $20 for two sandwiches, a bag of chips to share, two cookies and two drinks.)

We'll be back, Grant's!

I really want to like this place.  I love the neighborhood, the homes, the less hipster of peeps, etc.  But after coming for a lovely Sunday afternoon, I was going to get a ham and cheese sandwich.  The great guy at the counter, though I loved his look and his handle bar mustache, the poor guy was a poor listener.  On one sandwich no cheese was added, and the meat was processed.  My ham was something I could have bought at costco, and there wasn't a whole lot of meat in it at all.  The lettuce was a joke, little square bits that gave the illusion there was more in there than you were actually eating.

I am a fan of their market.  They have tons of unique bottles of soda that were fun to try.

I love the porch seating outside, great on a sunny day as it is so very peaceful and quiet around.  But, I'll make my own sandwiches for lunch.

This was a really great local organicky market with prepared foods and kombucha and a legit bagel. Tons of hippies. If I lived in San Diego, I would try to live near here. Yoga, bead shops, awesome.

It's a cute little store--a little pricey--but convenience can be expensive. I miss living in 'hood, it was a delight to spend my hard-earned money there. They have good, fresh food and unique products you won't find at other stores. It's great.

I don't know why we don't take advantage of this place more.  I like the South Park Special - turkey, ham, bacon, provolone, and avocado and the partner likes the Californian - turkey, bacon, choice of cheese, sans avocado.  They have a different choices of breads and cheeses, so it's up to you.  There's also a variety of sandwiches to choose from, and salads, and breakfast items.  Oh and they do the coffee thing to.

I hadn't been here in a while, but they've cut back on their red wine selections and added a small dining area inside.  They also have a selection of gourmet items, sodas, waters, and a small section of vegetables.  You can pick up a meal to cook here, but don't expect something like Whole Foods.

Again, I will suggest calling in your order because the girl said it would only take 10 minutes and she was right.  It also beats waiting around with the annoying yuppies who looked like they smelled a fart.  Today, these two customers were getting impatient because the credit/debit machine was slow.

Doesn't anyone pay with cash anymore?  It's so much more easier and convenient.  LOL!

I wanted to tell them to "Shut the F#%& up!"  because the people that work there are really nice.  And then I wanted to tell the woman, "Next time go to Subway!"

Other than that, this is a great place to go.  One lazy day last summer we walked down and had an enjoyable lunch with a few strangers and their dog.  So yes, dogs are welcomed as well.

Convenient and reliable.  What more could you ask for?  This place seems to have it all, and it's only about the size of a coffee shop.   I think what I like most about this place is the fact that it's designed to keep you around.  Inside the market, they have a section towards that right with seating that is meant for people to just chill and relax at.  I've seen a few people enjoy the sandwiches from their deli or sipping on their morning coffee before jetting off to work.  The also have board games and such to keep you and anyone else you may be with occupied.  What a nice, homey touch.

They also have a nice selection of wine, beer, cheeses, and more.  You can purchase name brand supplies if you feel more comfortable with those types of products, but they also carry things from vendors/companies you've never heard of.  They also have fresh fruits and veggies to pick from.  This place is a bit on the pricey side though so be forewarned.  I managed to drop over 30 bones on two bottles of wine, pita chips, and hummus one night.  One could argue that sounds about right but we all know that would have cost around $20.00 at a major supermarket.  But on the upside, you're supporting and helping sustain local businesses.  And if you're in walking distance, then you just helped out Mother Earth a little bit more.  There you go, two incentives to check this place out if you happen to live near Beech and Dale.  Do it!

Grant's Marketplace is awesome! The Joe's Favorite sandwich on Rosemary Olive Oil bread seriously rules my life. Order it. And call it a "Joe's on Rose". It's fun to say and they'll love you for it.

They have a million different root beers. I, for one, love root beer. They also have Kombucha. Last time I went they were out of the good flavors, and they didn't have any Wonderdrink! Boo! They also have a huge wine selection, and gourmet cookies, and tons of chip flavors...

I can't see myself grocery shopping here, because it's not really cohesive for that, and some things are overpriced (like the Baby Bell mini cheese wheels... 8 or something for like $5!), but they're independent so they can't have everything for 50 cents like major chain groceries can.

Still, they get 5 stars because that sandwich is so fucking good. My best friend brought one to me at work one time and I haven't deviated from it since. How can you not love a deli that uses Boar's Head???

Plus, they're open late for a neighborhood indie market, and you can call your sandwich order in, if you can't make it by the 6:30 cut off, for instance.

I LOVE GRANT'S!!!!!!!!!!

I've gone to Grants ever since it opened.  I live right behind it.  I typically sit outside with a few of my friends every few days or so.  It's always been a decent place to pick up some beer or coffee.

However, today I heard management agreeing with an angry neighbor about his disdain for dogs who can't be completely silent.  This is after a younger kid's puppy briefly yelped outside.  At the same time, the kid heard them complaining and scurried off...

Personally, I was offended.  I couldn't believe it.  It's South Park.  It's Dog Town, San Diego.  And there, two men complaining about dogs at noon.  Not at night.  Not in the morning.  At noon!  Like it really matters at this time.  The establishment is dog-friendly yet the it seems a few neighbors are not; to the customer's dogs.

I'm sorry.   --  "methinks not."  This is entirely DUE to the angry ranting neighbor who made the atmosphere very unpleasant for more than a few of us.

This review isn't for any product or service in general.  It's not a bad establishment at all.  The food and prices are not bad and the place in general is quite nice.  But for me personally, I don't think I could ever go back.  If the ranter wasn't reinforced I would say that I was a "fan."

Do you get kind of embarrassed when reading http://stuffwhitepeopl... because you see a little bit of the post in you? If so, this is the small market place for you.

The deli section is always fresh and the sandwiches are really great, and really well put together. I've never had a chunk of roast beef fall out when I'm eating it which is great. They've got both Kettle Chips and Dirty Chips! Oh dang!

The really great thing about this place is the selection of unusual cola's and root beer. I work down the street and I always pop in before hand to get a couple different ones to sample. I think the Frosty Root Beer is the best. They also have a nice selection of wine, cheese and a solid, if unremarkable selection of beer. It's like if a "White Person" had a dream about their ideal corner store, except they didn't sell cigarettes, but had a deli. Well worth the trip to South Park if you aren't local.

Service is helpful, friendly and efficient so tip 'em well!

It's no wonder I'm broke. I have great taste. If you are too good for most grocery stores, then shop at Grant's Market in South Park. This is a true specialty store for people who don't just think, but know they are special.

Amy's Grocery List:

1. Tuna Salad.

Mr. Grant knows what's up with tuna salad. The tuna is top quality, and the fish to mayo ratio is spot on. Add some chopped dill pickles (pickle relish often gives tuna salad a sweet flavor- YUCK!) and fresh parsley, a scoop perfects the Greek salad.

2. Greek Salad.

I make kick ass salads. But why fuss with buying, washing and chopping ingredients when Grant's is 1 block from my house? The Greek salad here is tops. Hearts of romaine are always crisp, cold and fresh, plenty of creamy, crumbled feta and Kalamata olives, plus pepperonccinis. Under 5 bucks. Fantastic!

3. Fruit Salad.

Yeah, so you get it: Grant's succeeds at salads. The fruit salad here is just lovely. Kiwi, strawberry, cantaloupe, watermelon, grapes, honeydew, sometimes black berries. Always fresh and flavorful. A store that uses season fruits? What a concept!

4. Rosemary Avocado Smash.

Chewy, toasted locally baked rosemary bread slathered with butter, topped with a mash of avocado, salt and pepper, plus fresh basil leaves; add tomato and you're stoked.

5. Banana Bread.

Up there with my Nana's recipe. So moist and packed with bananas you'll go apeshit. Please try some for yourself!

6. Kombucha.

After a weekend of hard drinking and drug use, I inquired about revitalizing beverages. The girl warned me of the fermented tea 'It tastes like shit! But you'll feel great if you keep drinking it.' Indeed! I am now a card carrying member of the Kombucha Nation; if ever I see someone toting the distinctive bottle, they're sure to get a high five, or if on bikes, a shout-out. Beginner's advice: if fermented tea is not your cup of tea, just keep drinking it. You'll start to acquire a taste for the stuff, and it will change your life! A natural boost of energy and good for overall health, I recommend the Trilogy flavor.

7. Root Beer.

Mr. Grant takes tremendous pride in his stock of rare and delicious bottled sodas. When I'm feeling like a crazy bitch, I like to drink me a Rat Bastard root beer (Below the title reads, 'It's Us Against Them'). I'm already cool, but I feel straight rad when I'm chugging down a bottle of this spicy sarsaparilla soda. Grant's diet bottled root beer selection is also impressive. If you're sugar conscious, Virgil's or Brian's are good.

8. Real Beer. GOOD beer.

Chimay Red, White and Blue labels and Duvel. Enough said.

Boars Head meats and cheeses, sandwiches made on several Bread and Cie varieties, and a turkey corn chowder so good I might chicken out of my vegetarian stink for a cup, Grant's Market is my go-to locale for quality foods that are fresh and healthy. The help is kind, as is Mr. Grant, and with plenty of tables outside, umbrellas for shade, free wi-fi and electrical outlets, South Park is lucky to have Grant's (and me of course) as part of its landscape.

Unlike some of the previous reviewers here, I admit that I have terrible taste. If left unsupervised, I'd be munching down 7-11 taquitos and downing MGD by the case (they don't call it "Mexicans Getting Drunk" for nothing).

Thank god for Grant's being down the street from my place, which helps spare me the embarrassment of explaining my food & beverage choices by offering better options. Kudos.

Seriously, I have a few staples here I can't live without. They include their Cobb Salad (heavy on the ham & turkey), the Breakfast Joe sandwich (try it with sausage & pepper jack cheese), and the White Mocha (currently giving me the energy to write this very review).

It can be a tad pricey for some but, considering the quality of items they offer, I'm willing to bite the bullet.

it's always fascinating to sit outside with coffee or a sandwich and people watch for a while. Grant's attracts a wide array of locals, from families out on a morning stroll to dreadlocked bohemian-types out for a morning shot of espresso.

This would've been a 3.5-star review...but stocking Chimay red, white and blue easily bumps it to 4.

I just moved to South Park and have been hunting for my local grocery store.  Yelp rated Grant's so highly, but as you might read, it's because it has an amazing deli.  It should be named Grant's Deli & Market, but I digress...

Everyone loves a good deli, so I checked it out.  I tried the Californian (turkey, bacon, avocado, cheese, the works).  I was impressed by their high-quality ingredients.  I think I've found my new neighborhood deli!

$7.50 is about a buck over the market price for a deli sandwich, so I give the place 4 stars... as a deli.  They have some wine, cheese, and other market items, but It's not REALLY a grocery store so the hunt continues!

Great Pretentious Market!

Now, some of you may already be shaking your head at my use of the word pretentious.  Well for the sake of the review let us define pretentious according to the American Heritage Dictionary:

Pretentious:  Making or marked by an extravagant outward show; ostentatious.

Well this pretty much defines Grant's Marketplace.  First thing you notice is the the real lack of groceries.  This is more a place to get your wine and cheese and bread for your fancy little cocktail party.  They do  have items that you would find in a grocery store, but they are so marked up that it is really better just to stick to the fancy stuff that you can't get from the Food Bowl which is right down the street and much cheaper for general groceries.

I have had a few sandwiches here and while they are good, they are nothing to call home about, and at the same time they are a little on the expensive side like everything else at Grant's.

Grant's has a very great and friendly staff that make the experience a lot more personal and enjoyable compared to competing markets.  I tend to get out of work late sometimes, and I would notice that my favorite baguettes would be sold out when I got there, so the nice checker lady gave me Grant's card and told me to call in the morning and they would hold a loaf for me!  That is great service.

Other Grant's notables that people often forget or don't know about is the fabulous root-beer selection.  There are tons, and I often get two or three different ones to sample.  I think that the people there think I am some little kid.

"You know that this is root-beer right"  questioned one employee while I set my items on the counter.

"Oh yes I do!"  I replied "But do you think that you could put it in a brown paper bag so I can look cool drinking it on the patio in the shade of an umbrella."

"Surely"  the employee retorted.

"Thanks, but don't call me Shirley."

I thought the concept of 1/2 stars was ridiculous, but Grant's really does deserve another 1/2 star.  I've been here a few times since moving to SD in October, and every time I find something new tucked in the shelves.  This time it was their selection of Santa Barbara Olive Co. products.  If you are a martini drinker, these are a must!  The blue cheese olives are awesome!

Anyway, I had the Joe's Favorite sandwich on rosemary, for $0.60 extra.  Definitely worth it.  Many sandwich joints skimp on either meat or toppings, especially guacamole, but not Grant's.  Perfectly proportionate sandwiches, not too big, but not tiny either.  Sure $7-8 for a deli sandwich may be steep for some folks, but it's a treat and Grant's makes it worth it.  The selection of root beers is impressive; always something different to try (I recommend the Rat Bastard -- read the ingredients).  The wine selection is small but they keep it economical -- I should know as I used to work in a wine warehouse store in Chicago and I'm familiar with many of the under $15 labels.  Fresh selections of Bread & Cie breads and excellect potato chips keep me coming back.

Boars Head deli products are the way to go if you're going to be saving a bit of cash by making your own sandwich, and Grant's features this brand exclusively.  The only thing that would make Grant's better for me is a live cheese monger rather than the prepackaged section, but that's getting a bit pretentious of me, I admit.

This is the Apple store of neighborhood markets. It doesn't stock cheap stuff, or have huge variety, but what it does have is high quality. You won't find thirty kinds of Pinot Noir, just three good ones.

It's the place to go when you need to whip up something good for company, or treat yourself, or just have a last-minute need for one of the absolute necessities like eggs or milk or wine. It has a lot of crackers, dinner-party essentials, pasta, bread, cheese, wine, etc. The selection of fruits and vegetables is miniscule.

Yeah, it's a bit pricey. I'm OK with that. It's the antithesis of the seedy trash-magnet of California Liquor nearby. It proves you can sell indulgences and still have class.

"There's a fellow named Luigi,
He comes from Napoli,
I wanna be like Luigi cause he's always got money,
With a book in his pocket,
and a pencil in his hand,
Luigi's gotta the busines,
I no understand..."

I was singing aloud and riding my bike from North Park to Southie with the sole purpose of checking out Grants.  You see, I've found myself many a time staring through their windows when I have left Hamiltons for the night.  Glaring past the glass wishing they were open so I could partake of their ice creams, sandwiches, gi-normous selection of root beers, and other items of goodness.

I pulled up today in sheer curiosity and excitement hoping that today, since it wasn't midnight, that I would be able to taste their food and not just their reputation.  Slowly strolling the magical aisles of this small wonderland of food I deeply appreciated their many pasta sauces, pestos, and spreads they had to offer.  For a place this size, Grant's has a surprisingly large amount of beer, wine, cheese and other fun, festive delicacies.

I settled upon a Caprese Sandwich, Kettle Sea Salt and Vinegar Chips, Fiji Water, and a Virgil's Root Beer.  Now please note that Grant's already was serving me 3 of my favorite afternoon delights, the Kettle chips, Virgils and Fiji.  So the fantasy of Grant's hinged on the yet to be tasted Caprese sandwich.

The wait wasn't very long at all for the sandwich even though there were several orders ahead of me, probably 10-15 minutes tops.  If your a person who wants fast food go to a Wendy's or McDonald's.  Or you could pick up one of many publications (several being free) that they have at their store.  I picked up the Reader and enjoyed the weather outside while I waited for my sandwich to be done.

Soon enough I was sinking my teeth into a pretty decent sandwich.  The white break was soaked yet not dripping with EVOO and Balsamic vinegar.  The tomatoes and basil were fresh and the mozzarella was plentiful.  I couldn't find something to complain about.  If one searched hard enough the cure for cancer could have been found in thier sandwich, which is also probably better tasting than chemo cocktails. Who would have thought?

Grant's Marketplace floated in like a fairy godmother after I wished on my east coast roots to find a true, deli sandwich in San Diego.

My standard being: quality cold-cuts, thinly sliced, layered upon first-rate bread and adorned with proper condiments- not as an option, but as a steadfast rule.

Grant's seemed to have read my rulebook, but more likely they had written it. Boar's Head meats (no turkey roll here) lured me with its bacon-like beacon from our familiar friendship back east. The bread could also hold its own, which showed guts, since most places out here treat it with secondary status- oh, how wrong they are. Besides the regulars (wheat, white, etc.), Grant's offered marbled rye and crispy, rosemary loaves from Bread and Cie (local bakery.)

This rosemary bread was essential for my first-meal-of-the-day favorite, traveling off breakfast's beaten path and directly into the "Rosemary Avocado Smash"( rosemary olive oil bread, avocado, basil, salt and pepper.) While eating my "oh, so San Diegan" dish, this town's deli potential gained some ground.

Classics like the messy warmth of a Ruben or the salty coolness of a BLT were rivaled with "freshies" like Caprese (tomatoes, mozzarella, basil) and "Smokin' Joe" (roast beef, cheddar, bbq sauce.) The "Californian" quickly became my #1 (a metaphor for my present "state" of mind?) with turkey, white cheddar and avocado.

Grant's rounded out their reputation by swinging a mean ladle when it came to homemade soups and left me with the question, what's more important - oxygen or turkey corn chowder? Stocking shelves with unexpected finds like pancetta and high end wines, they still make sure there's enough bottles of Coke and Stewart's root beer to sip with your "sammy".

My standard (ended up) being: Grant's standard.

It's easy to become a fixture once you grow some roots, so I'll be here often, at an outside table, just gaining a little east coast perspective from this west coast deli.

Oh yeah, Grant's is the best.  I don't really do any grocery shopping there, but I've had lunch there three times now.  Every time, I've had different cashiers and they've all been really nice.  The sandwiches are great - not super fancy hoity toity, but just good old fashioned sandwiches and they have a huge selection of drinks, chips and other things to compliment your lunch.  They also have gelato, which looks good, but I've had the self-restraint to refrain from dessert so far.

The vibe of the place is great too - with outdoor tables wrapping around two sides and an awesome giant wood table inside.  I love that they have the little buzzer things to notify you when your sandwich is ready, so you don't have to hover around the counter waiting.

Finally, Grant's isn't too far from my house (an easy bike ride) and it is a hugely needed source of quality foods, since Gala has the basics, but really doesn't deliver when it comes to anything very interesting or fancy.  Yes, I know Grant's is expensive, but what do you expect from a well done, local grocery?  Now we just need a good source of fresh fruits and veggies and I won't ever have to leave South Park!

Grant's is one reason I love the South Park/Golden Hill areas. You'll be driving along on a residential street (or biking in my case) and suddenly you come to a strip of funky business. Grant's is one of them. I walked in and found it full of the necessities (cheeses, fruits, vegetables, seasonings, beers, condiments, dairy and a wonderful wine selection). On top of all this, they make great sandwiches. Try the caprece sandwich. It's fantastic.
I love the back area of the store which has some tables and chairs for you to enjoy your lunch. There's also a nice big patio area outside.

There's also a small coffee bar and about four flavors of Italian ice cream ready to be served up.

I'll definitely be back. The staff was very nice and helpful and seemed to take pride in their jobs. Grant's has my business!

Grant's, thanks for the sandwiches! Sure, the prices are a bit on the high side, but I think that's because we yanks have become accustomed to Costco prices and fastfood volumes to keep prices down. Can you imagine how much Grant's pays in rent for the corner they have in the now sheik South Park neighborhood?! I mean COME ON. :)

Love the people who work here. Love that it's close to my apartment in North Park. Love the selection of Root Beer that is non pareil! Had no idea till today (been there 3x now) that they stocked every kind imaginable.

Basically, you pay for convenience and quality, so why bitch about it? Be thankful. Thanks Grants.

Great neighborhood deli - went here after yoga at Ginseng.  Came away with Joe's Special sammie - oven baked turkey slices, avocado, and gruyere on wheat - an organic chocolate bar, and honest tea.  Helpful/friendly service.  It's a nice setup  - they've got seating inside on some wood tables/benches and an outdoor seating area with little tables and chairs.

A small quaint corner store that has bigger ambitions...especially since Golden Hill became South Park at the end of the last century.

Grant's is too overpriced to be on my rotation of places to go.  The high quality and convenience apparently has a price of 25% mark up on most products...it's like paying for food at the airport, and you aren't going anywhere decent!

Great choice of micro-drinks (especially root beer), but like everything else here, completely overpriced.

The sandwiches, albeit good and filling, are not great for the price.  Throw some chips or something with it, would you?

Get the sense that this place is overpriced?

Save yourself a lot of time and money by going to a multitude of other places.  You'll find a better selection, probably considerably lower prices if you venture elsewhere.

But if you are in South Park, this maybe your best bet...not worth the drive, especially at the price of gas today.

Yo and the nice girl behind the counter is enough to get a bonus star for Grant's Marketplace.

(BTW: The deli closes at six pee-em so don't be late.)

Yeah...after last night... looking for cards and spaghetti sauce there... I decided that I officially like the bubbly little girl behind the counter. She so different from me... definitely a hell of a lot more charming to be sure. Bouncing off of the walls, smiling..."hahahahahaha!"  Me:  GRAWWWRRRR!!! you don't have any Peligrino water????
Her:  "No butcha want some fresh pasta? I have more than I need!!!

Hey kiddo, if you reading this I appreciate your kindness. I should have left you a bigger tip, I will hit you  w/ with some more bills when I come in next time.

This little market is one of the best kept secrets in South Park. Good selection of wines and champagnes. although you'll pay a bit more for them. The owners and their staff are cool, low key and very friendly.

When I'm on duty and looking for a lunch spot, I always point the cruiser toward Grant's for one of their sandwiches. Nothing like made to order AND fresh.

I just got back from Grants, it was my first time there.  I went from word of mouth of my friends and fellow yelpers.  I went to lunch there after a 9 mile hike so needless to say, I was hungry.  I ordered the tuna melt with smoked gruyere cheese and tomato on the rosemary bread.  It was amazing.  I love how the flavors played together.  I picked up a ginger cherry ale to go with it.  Ryan got the clam chowder and it was also delicious.  They even have gelato!  The customer service was great, very short wait time for the food, nice seating to sit and enjoy your food.  I will be back, and I will recommend this place to everyone!

I literally moved to South Park in order to be within waking distance to Grant's. In the morning, I walk there with my little pom, Wallace, and tie him to the metal post dedicated solely to doggie-tying (complete with dog bowl big enough for Wallace to climb inside and submerge himself, which he does). I get coffee and walk home if I'm alone. If I have visitors in town, or I'm feeling particularly wealthy, we stay for a super awesome breakfast sandwich. The service is usually super friendly and helpful, except one time when they forgot about me outside, but I forgive them because they felt really bad about it.

A lot of my friends have moved away recently, so at night now I walk to Grant's for the self-indulgent bottle of inexpensive but good wine and yummy gourmet groceries. Yes the food is a little more expensive than it would be at Von's, but I'm paying for convenience and I'm ok with that. I have yet to try it, but in last night's self-pity trip, I saw that they have little trays of FRESH home-made pasta (lemon linguine anyone?!?!?!). Geeked. Fo' real. Who wants to join me for dinner?

we tried this place in September since we moved just down the street. i was hoping they would have a better selection of vegetarian/vegan selections at the deli counter then they did.
Lets just say i settled for a bagel and then spent well over 20 minutes waiting for my $3 day old tasting bagel, and for the 3 employee's working to finish up their lengthy conversation while people where standing there waiting for their food to be made.   Next time I will take those 20 minutes to drive to big city bagel in hillcrest instead.

Grant's loves America.  You can tell when you take one look at the Root Beer selection.  It's common knowledge that in the late 40's America chose Root Beer as out nations official beverage.  Shortly after the rest of the world followed our lead and it is now known as the official beverage of planet Earth.  Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous "I have a dream" speech with an open bottle of A&W's  underneath the podium.  When Gandhi ended his hunger strike as a protest against British rule in India guess what the first thing to pass his lips was... Root Beer.

OK, I've been trying for a long time to appreciate Grant's... but this place drives me absolutely insane on so many levels. First, can we talk about the prices here?
-They mark up nearly 25% on everything! I know it's convenient to have a neighborhood marketplace, but Food Bowl is just around the corner and their prices are normal!
-Not only that but CHECK THE EXPIRATION DATES!!!!! Here's a short story: I wanted a tuna sandwich so I ran over to Grant's and bought a jar of Mayo. I wrote the date on the top of the jar because I often forget how long things have been in the fridge. A few months later while cleaning out the fridge, I checked the expiration date on that Mayo, it expired 3 months prior to the day I bought it!!! I almost vomited!  This has also happened to me with eggs and milk!!!!
-Their produce is disgusting, pick up one of their onions and see if it doesn't melt in your hands.
-I give them one star because their food is good... but again, the prices are outrageous. Additionally, it takes entirely too long to get your food. Don't run in there if you're in a hurry, like I did this morning when I waited 20 minutes for 2 bagels!!!!!
-Another star because their staff is super nice!
Overall, I would rather just go to the Food Bowl. At least it's made me shop smarter so I never run out of anything!

***UPDATE***
Owner contacted me... told me I could shop at Walmart if I wanted the best deal in town. I don't want the best deal in town, maybe that wasn't clear. I'd like fresh food at a fair price... I'll stick to the farmer's markets. Don't think I'll be going back here any time.

The GOOD- great selection on niche items like mustards, vinegar, real sodas.  I go there for wine when I am in a pinch, a little pricey, but hey, its a small business so what do you want?  Staff are friendly.  Seating is decent.  Dog friendly.  Bread and Cie delivers daily, Sunday, too.  The Avocado Smash is amazing.  Decent cheese selection.

The BAD- the produce needs CPR.   Joe has an attitude and can be petulant.

The UGLY- while the staff are friendly and most are knowledgeable, the service is S-L-O-O-O-O-W-W-W.  Even with 4-5 staff behind the counter, I waited 25 minutes for 4 sandwiches, with only 2 people ahead of me.

The SUMMARY- work on the produce, teach staff some efficiency, a good neighborhood market to have around.

I love Grant's. It fills a need in the neighborhood: good cheese, bread and cie (oh my stars, i love their oatmeal/apricot cookie), a little gelato, great sandwiches, and the best beverage selection for miles (Mazaras is pretty good, too).

I've always had good experiences with the people who work there. The owner is quirky at worst.

Grant's is a corner store that brought some real quality to this corner of South Park. Fresh Bread & Cie bread and pastries every day, amazing selection of candy including Necco's, good selection of bottled wine (although I would prefer a few more bottles less than $15). Inside and outside informal seating. A water bowl outside for the doggies....and Grant's now has public bathrooms!

My friends and I have always found Joe and his staff pleasant and efficient. He's a small businessman offering a great service at a fair price.

I'm a regular here on Saturday morning, if you are too, stop and say hello to the group of loud women outside.

Grants is one of the only reasons why I miss living in South Park. Awesome deli sandwiches and great old timey soda pops! I'm a fan of Kim's Favorite. The multigrain bread is a bit more like squaw bread, but is delicious. The grocery selection is well curated, but as other reviewers have indicated, a bit pricey. But if you live in the neighborhood, it's an awesome place to stop in to, and as a deli, it's tops. Great staff, great location, awesome patio. Go Grants!

Love the sandwiches and soups.  God, I wish they carried the clam chowder more often.  Other soups don't disappoint.  I can't help but always get their greek sandwich on flatbread.  My boyfriend always get something different and I've loved all of them (I get to taste it all without any risk! hehee).  Between Po' Boy's in PB and Grants, I don't know which sandwich to pick!

I never met the owner (thank goodness?) so service has always been pleasant.  Like that they carry boar's head products.
