10 reviews for Grandma Sally's Family Restaurant
Over the river and through the woods to Grandmother's house we go. Ok, well we didn't exactly cross a river or any woods but we crossed some big intersections and that has to count for something.
Grandma Sally has pretty tasty and cheap breakfast. I don't know about your grams but my grandma has black coffee and dry toast for breakfast...uh uh, not Grandma Sally!
Turkey sausage, eggs, grits, hashbrowns, and pancakes...all good!
Coffee was strong but good and never empty.
No frills here, just a neighborhood eatery.
When I was in High School, Grandma Sally's was an occasional hang out spot for me. Their food was always - how do i say this? - food. That's what it was - it was food. And it wasn't bad! it wasn't great, mindblowing, or sophisticated, but you know what? it wasn't bad!
This morning I went for the first time since I moved back to Oak Park, and you know what? it wasn't bad! *Extensive* Menu Options! I went for the Southern Eggs Benedict - first off, I've never had this before, I didn't even know it existed, but how awesome is this dish?? Forget the canadian bacon, let's cut to the chase and use a sausage patty instead! and you know what? we'll throw a couple slices of tomato on there so you don't feel like you're a complete fat ass! Genius. I will try to popularize the existence of this dish elsewhere.
I also recommend the plain crepes!
And I don't know what people are talking about bad service?? I'll grant you the people here are not going to try to be your best friend - no big smiles or chit-chat, but you know what? competent order taking, frequent coffee refills, came over to the table twice and asked if we needed anything - I don't need anything more than that.
Oh and here's something that i thought made the service actually stand out: I had ordered fruit with my southern eggs benedict and they brought me cantaloupe. i don't like cantaloupe, but didn't say anything. When the waitress was taking my plate away, she commented on it - something like - "you don't want the fruit to go?" and i told her i didn't like cantaloupe. she started walking away and then was about to ask if i wanted anything else, but the hostess/assistant manager(?) beat her to it. I thought it was pretty thoughtful 1) take notice that i had not eaten it and 2) that 2 different people offered me something different even though it was the end of the meal, and there was nothing really wrong with what they brought me.
Now here's the last thing, I half expected to be dissapointed because after having been to so many great brunch places in the intervening 10 years since I've been to Grandma Sally's I thought to myself, "there's no way i'm going to still like Grandma Sallys." but you know what?
I *did* like it. and you know what? that's sort of comforting - it's nice to know there's a decent breakfast place nearby, and the more i think about it, the more i think the name is appropriate because when you think of 'grandma's cooking' you think of 'fulfilling' but you don't really think of 'sophisticated', and that's what this place, unsophisticated, but fulfilling. Thanks Grandma....Sally's.
Great food and reasonable prices. They are open for breakfast and lunch only. The weekend mornings get very crowded and you have to wait, but it's worth it.
Good food... very resonable... an M.D. i worked for years ago used to walk his entire staff a couple of dooors down to eat here when we worked saturdays. There are a couple of waitresses I'd like to strangle... but food and speed of delivery to talble make up for it... even when croweded you almost never have to wait more than a couple of minutes to be seated
We ended up here after the big Denny's debacle Tuesday (it was literally a 2 hour wait at both of the ones we went to), and we were incredibly lucky we did.
I had biscuits and gravy, two hard-boiled eggs and some of their apple pancake. Have you ever had "baked to order" desserts at Grand Lux Cafe or Cheesecake Factory? Aren't they usually pretty damn delicious? Well this apple pancake takes 30 minutes to bake, but it is just as good and just as worth beignets or cookies. If I were a boy, I might consider making love to this apple pancake, a la American Pie.
Actually, no I wouldn't, but that's how delectably moist and decadently rich this apple pancake is. The batter is egg-y, cake-y, and delicious, the baked apples golden, sweet and with hints of cinnamon...I don't even really like apple pie and this apple pancake rocked my world.
I enjoyed my biscuits, gravy and eggs, and the rest of my table devoured their omelettes, Zamboni crepes, Grandma Slams (seriously), but we all agreed that that apple pancake was the best part of the meal. So we didn't get a free breakfast from Denny's, but we pretty much got the best breakfast anyways.
FYI, the owner of this place is related to the owner of Yolk downtown - just as a heads up, a lot of their items are the same. So if ever you're in the burbs, craving a Yolk breakfast, come over here, you'll likely be able to score the same meal.

We have gone here over the years a few times a year. I went today with my mom and was very disappointed in the service and with the hostess.
My mom ordered a French slam, which is french toast, two eggs, two sausages and two strips of bacon. I ordered the Florentine Benedict (Benedicts are the speciality or so it states on the menu). Came out fast but mom got pancakes and my egg yolks were almost hard). I pointed out the problems and the hostess came over and stated that's how their poached eggs are, while I tried to explain to her that poached eggs are not hard -- she became argumentative and loud. Lost my appetite with that scene -- won't be returning.
They also own Yolk in the south Loop.
This place has something special going for it, even though the decor is slightly stuck somewhere in the 80's. It's got the pastel color scheme going on, as well as those cheesy glass cube wall partitions that were so popular in the 80's. I like it because it's a no frills place, as any good breakfast spot should be.
Our group stopped by here on our way to Oak Park's Frank Lloyd Wright tour. We arrived at about 11 and I was at the point where I would have eaten just about anything. Seriously, I didn't care if I had to hunt my food down, cavewoman style, just pass up the hot sauce and coffee and i'm ready to go. The worst of it was the wait, which was anywhere from 20-30 minutes. When you are as food deprived as I was (didn't have much of a lunch or dinner the previoius night), those twenty minutes are an eternity.
Fortunately for my dining companions (because lord knows what might have happened) the food came out quick, I was eating my omelettes, toast, and pancakes within minutes. There was an endless supply of coffee refills, always a plus. We split the baked apple pancakes, which I highly recommend. Just trust me on the baked apple pancake, it's really good. The portions are huge however, and in spite of my hunger I could not finish everything without risking going up a dress size. I was glad to know I would be walking the food off. It's situated outside of Chicago, and as far as I know the best way to get there is by driving.
Seconding the first reviewer's recommendation of the Meat Skillet. That thing will shave a few months off the end of your life, but it is worth it. Grandma Sally's is a great neighborhood diner type of place, really a standout for their breakfasts. The service is a little gruff, but I think it adds to the charm of the place. Very family friendly and my kids can always find something they want on the menu which is a big plus for me. I've never had a problem like the ones described below in three years of coming here once a month or so. But then again, I've not once found hair in my food and I don't complain about my food unless it is for some reason completely inedible. Never had that experience at Grandma Sally's. Recommended, especially if you wanna see where the retired mobsters have breakfast on Sunday mornings.
If you have a body and you want to kill it, come to Grandma Sally's and we'll make you a skillet.
This is probably the best breakfast spot outside of the city. They offer an extensive menu. The feature of the breakfast menu is the baked apple pancake (available on weekends only). They also have a wide variety of skillets. The Meat Lovers is my favorite. It's 2 eggs, any way you like, on top of bacon and sausage, and ham, on top of potatoes. This is all topped with melted Colby-jack. Yes, it will kill you quicker than a bullet, but that's why I only go once or twice a year. If you ever find yourself at Harlem and North Avenue around breakfast time, check it out.
Burnt toast nasty attitudes food sucks hair in my waffle. The worst place ever for food.I showed them the hair the lady explained no one here has dark hair I go are you F**in kidding me everone in here has dark hair. The front lady hostess same thing. Ignorant and arrogant. I will never give them my bussiness again.
