Review from sonya d.
This is cute little Sushi/Vietnamese place right by my work. I've passed by it so many times, and always wanted to pop in, but always happened to be by myself. My coworker suggested we go here today and I happily agreed. Also sushi is probably the most healthy food choice around here, so now I will go more often.
I ordered a miso soup, Alaskan Roll, and a green tea. All 3 items were filling and tasted great. The roll was packed with big, fresh pieces of salmon. However, I wish there was more avocado. The miso soup and green tea also had a good flavor and felt really good going down being that it was a cold, rainy day in the city. My coworker had frequented this place in the past, so the waitress came out and told her what the special of the day was, even though it wasn't on the menu. She ended up ordering it- Sweet and Sour Chicken- and absolutely loved it.
Overall, I like how friendly the servers are, the location, the variation of rolls as well as the option of Vietnamese food as well, and the healthy factor in my work hood! -

This place is OK. I went there because I was in the area and craving for sushi, so jumped on to yelp and saw the average rating was over 4 stars - so I thought I'll give it a try.
When I walked in, there was only one other guest in the restaurant, and tit was 7PM (dinner time). I was kinda hesitant to stay when I saw only one person, but I thought, let's just give it a try.
What was good is that their sushi cut is larger than most other sushi place. I would say most of the nigiri sushi they have were fresh enough. The spicy scallop roll was just 'meh', as well as the seared salmon. Albacore was good and Hamachi Kama was better than average.
Service was good, but I was just not blown away by their food. -

Food presentation is great here. The Chicken Combo box is what I had, vegetables were very fresh, as were all the other appetizers in the box. Staff is friendly. The only reason I gave four stars instead of five was the chicken. It was a little fatty; if I were in charge, I would give a leaner or better cut of chicken.

Only problem, the BBQ Pork was a little grizzly, some pieces not edible, otherwise it would be a 5 star for sure. Beautiful presentation, freshest produce, from a local farm in Half Moon Bay. We love the Combo Boxes, comes with all kinds of beautiful, tasty, fresh goodies. Very reasonably priced, great friendly service. Great location, a few doors up from Buena Vista (stop in for an Irish Coffee).

I came here with a few friends and actually didn't eat, but wish I had! It's a cute fusion restaurant with Vietnamese and Japanese dishes. The owner was super nice even though I didn't order anything, and was always refilling my drink!
My friends got beef pho and beef noodles, and both looked and smelled delicious! Even though I didn't eat here, I just wanted to give a rating because service was so good! If I'm ever back in the area I will definitely try it out. -

Family owned and operated, a little gem of a restaurant in a neighborhood full of tourist traps.
The owner is a lovely lady, a San Francisco local and she really took care of us last night. The food was delicious, especially the Vietnamese cuisine.
The restaurant is cozy, homey, with a soft light and comfortable seating. Pictures of Grace (the owner) with her dogs and other family adorn the walls...very sweet.
The menu is large and you have lots of choices. We tried a lot of things and everything was delicious. Tasty morsels of both vegetarian/vegan choices and meat and fish dishes. They make a lot of the foods themselves, like the noodles, and last night we were lucky enough to try the house-made sake...fantastic.
I will definitely be back. -

I want to give this place 4 stars because it's so close to my house and the people that work there are so nice, but I'm finding it hard to give a sushi place that microwaves it's unagi right in front of its customers high marks. I'm not saying they can't microwave their fish and that other places don't do the same thing, but I don't need to know that they're doing it. ;)
There are some good special (big) rolls here and they always offer me some free green tea when I'm waiting for takeout. The restaurant is cute and warm inside and good for a casual sushi night or takeout. -

I wanted to love this place because sushi is my fav and it's only a block from my new apartment. But alas, this place only got an "eh" out of me. I ordered the sushi combination and a seaweed salad. The fish didn't taste very fresh, a few pieces actually tasted "fishy" and so I didn't finish them because 1.) they didn't taste good and 2.) I didn't want to get sick.
The seaweed salad was good, nothing special to report other then it had a bit of cucumber in it too which is a little different but not mind-blowing or anything.
Another reason that this place only gets three stars is because I feel it's pricey for what it is. For my sushi combo and a seaweed salad it was $29. And because it wasn't very good, I felt kind of ripped off.
I've heard the Vietnamese food here is good, so I'm going to give it another shot and try that cuisine instead. I do love a good bowl of Pho Ga and really hope this place surprises me! Will update following experience #2. -

Review is way overdue for this place...I visited this place about 6 months ago. Forgive me if I cannot remember details. First, in very crowded area close to known area, I expected "so-so"...but it turned out a good place. Of course, it is largely depending upon sushi chef of the night, ingredients of the night...and sake. I felt lucky to visit right day, right timing...had a few specials out of the menu. I enjoyed very much...local Nishin - sashimi, sushi and grilled. It was very good. Tune was OK, Salmon, Ika (2 kinds), Tako, Suzuki, were all average. Sake selection, unfortunately, was not many. Price was, of course, major SF price...I would say near NYC price. So, CP was not good.
If I did not get that Nishin, it would be 3-stars though. -

A friendly place to stop by for lunch. With a welcoming staff and the smell of Asian spices, Grandeho's is a fun place to dine.
Lunch time is the best time to come here. Deals! I skimmed through the menu to find a Lemongrass Scallops Combination, which came with Miso Soup in a BIG bento box (height wise!). The portions turned out huge and uber yummers! The scallops were drowned in a spicy black bean sauce, with the whole black beans!
TIP: Be sure to ask for the spice rack. The spice rack includes soy sauce, crushed chili peppers and other spices you may want to add to your dish. Oh and tell them it's your birthday for a special mochi treat. -

Pretty good food for the area - although prices are higher than normal, that's expected since it's in such a touristy location. Their pho has a lot more veggies than you'd expect, but the portions are good for the price you pay. The last time I came here with coworkers they gave us their special - beef salad - for free as an appetizer, as well some fruit for dessert. The sushi wasn't bad either.

I consider myself a huge sushi person -- I understand the differences between a good and bad sushi restaurant. Overall, this place is very good. Some of the vietnamese dishes, fresh spring rolls and the seafood claypot, rival San Francisco staple The Slanted Door. The sushi is SOLID. The rolls are incredibly inventive. If you are obsessing about super fresh and exotic nigiri, then go to a different restaurant (Sebo, for example...rob a bank first though). As I said, overall this place is very very good and you will not be disappointed.

I do believe without Korean-Sushi-Fever, Sushi won't become this popular.
It's Korean creation that mixed with the red-hot sauce with mayonnaise.
It's Korean creation using the sauce all over the Jive Ass Rolls.
So,
why not call themselves Korean Sushi?
Well, I am tired.
Why?
Cuz I don't care anymore.
I don't care about Authentic or not.
Even Great Authentic Jap restaurant, you may run into a dick head drunk-chef or rude waitress.
That's possible, isn't it.
About this place.
Very friendly waitresses.
Good size of counter and 2 men were behind.
2 is good. An older man and a younger man.
The older man was main chef.
Clean counter though.
It was decent Nigiris.
Good size and shape and I verified dimples.
Well trained chef.
100% Korean and Korean style Sushi, I may say.
Why I need to mention "Korean style sushi"?
Coz the hot sauce?
Well, my answer is,
"Sweetness".
Shari was too sweet.
It not just Shari.
I ordered Kamekyo Tofu which 2" cubic Atuage-dofu covered with Teriyaki sauce mixed with starch.
It wasn't bad idea, I think it is good idea for a appetizer but I had the exact same feeling when I eat KFC.
The feeling.
You know the feeling when you went too far, too late to come back, you don't feel anything but just eating, MORE.
IT WAS TOO SWEET.
That's why I say " Korean Sushi".
But I didn't dislike this place because everything else was fine.
Clean and good service.
It was ALL RIGHT.
P.S. I know nothing about Grandeho-1 at all. Yet.Listed in: Pseudo Sushi

There's definitely some kind of schizophrenic action going on at what was once called Grandeho's Kamekyo Japanese Cuisine and is now, on half of the outdoor signage, called "GK Kitchen". Inside, there are 2 separate menus, one for sushi and Japanese cooking, the other for Vietnamese.
They explained to us last night that they have a blended family, hence the unusual combination.
The good news is that the Vietnamese food, whilst priced high compared to TL Vietnamese, is really pretty darn good and provides some ethnic variety in whiteytown-by-the-sea. The curries are delicious, as is the bbq pork, egg rolls and fried rice. There are tons of other traditional and maybe Vietnamese "fusion" items available. The ingredients are fresh.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Walnut Creek, CA
Working in the heart of touristland, it's nice to have a normal not fish-and-chips / clam chowder restaurant within walking distance. I had the tempura udon today, which may just have not been the best thing to pick on the menu; though it was nicely presented with an adorable little pot for the spicy pepper flecks and cute soup spoon, the broth and noodles were just OK. The tempura was pretty good, though some of the veggies weren't full cooked.
We were sitting where we could see the sushi chef action, and all of the items from the sushi bar seemed delicious. So, perhaps I just got the wrong item. After reading gwynnie's review, I'm going to try something from the Vietnamese side of the menu.
Just OK. HOWEVER, I'm going to come back and give this place another try, just because I am so glad to have options besides tourist food. I will report back. -

I develop this weird mental angst now about reviewing places where I am a regular. I start to wonder how much of my experience is based on the warm feelings I've developed for a place, the owner, the staff...the occasional perks. It's like there's a shelf life on favorite places --- "after xx date you can no longer review with integrity".
Then I realized I was vastly over-thinking the whole thing. (I do that sometimes --- just pat me on the head and tell me to go play in traffic.) I decided that love is NOT blind, merely more understanding of certain foibles.
Grandeho's is one of those places I've hesitated to review. I'm a regular --- enough of a regular that I don't even get a menu any more. But since this is the place that really taught me the wonders of udon I need to share. (Disclaimer --- I don't eat sushi, so this will be of no use to you if you are hoping for a review of that.)
What's to love?
Well, the Udon of course! Big bowls of perfectly cooked noodles and oodles of fresh veggies. Mmmmmm. Sometimes, if I'm *ahem* hungover, I get the Yaki Udon instead and it's just as delicious.
The comfortable space full of plants and pictures --- mostly of the owner's Chihuahuas.
The friendly service --- I've always felt welcome and even invited here.
What are the foibles?
The wait for food --- it's kind of a joke with my fellow regulars. It can take a l o n g time to get your order.
The tea is too hot to hold --- seriously! I have to get extra napkins to wrap around the (handle-less) pottery cups because otherwise I burn my fingers.Listed in: Surviving Sushi

So, so lame.
I live around the area, and pass by this place all the time. My lady was hungry for some udon - like NOW - and I suggested this place because it is very convenient.
They were playing the Pats game on the TV, which is interesting for a sushi place. We ordered the tofu udon to go - a $8.50 dish. When the mealy looking lady who runs the cashier handed us the check, it came out to $13.50. She had added the $5 surcharge because it was "dinnertime" and because that is apparently the practice when it is "busy".
However, we were the only ones in the restaurant. The bored sushi chef looked over as he picked his grubby hands through a newspaper.
So we were looking at ~+50% on top of a takeout order. I told the hostess that that was a preposterous charge, then we walked out.
You can keep your damn udon, you thieves. I hope your empty tables continue to be the norm, though your location on the cable car line will unfortunately afford you many more unwitting customers than you deserve. -

Great place for lunch or dinner. Even though it is in the center of the tourist trap, this place truly is the locals hidden gem.
Close to my office and not far enough from home... I find myself enjoying delicious fresh fish. It is a quint restaurant with a lot of character and great service.
Their take out is convenient and fast. Sometimes too fast for call ins.
I love miso soup, but unfortunately not here. I have yet to try their sake, but I plan to.
Enjoy! -

I have recently started a 2nd gig to feed my artsy fartsy side. So I took a stroll around my new work 'hood. Saw the cutest little sushi place and decided that I'd try it.
I have no issues eating alone...I got social balls of steel folks!!!
So I sat at the sushi bar and the chef greeted me immediately! Even in his broken English he was friendly and smiling. He saw me eying the dark red tuna...
"Very good...from Florida. Sometime Boston, sometime Hawaii, always fresh...fly in!
The place is pricey for lunch...Bento Box was $15. It came with a bunch of food though...two salads, rice, miso, fruit, and your two picks!
I picked chicken teryaki and of course sashimi....he gave me four slices of that beautiful maguro. Oh my lordy it was so good it melted in my mouth!!
The whole time the chef was smiling and joking with me in his cute broken English...I love that he was trying to be my friend seeing as I was sitting all alone. Even when I didn't make the credit card minimum ($20) they still took it anyway because THAT is how dope they are!!!
I will definitely go again...pricey or not. I had such a good time there...and the tuna alone is calling my name. -

I like this place. It's very much like a neighborhood joint that very inviting to those who are visiting from outside the area. They seems to mix things up very well here; Japanese and Vietnamese, modern and tradition cooking. It's not a very big restaurant, which makes it cozy and comfortable.
I've been here a couple of times. I have to agree with the cable car guy who came by the restaurant and exclaimed that it was one of the best places. The wait staff is very nice and friendly. The choices here are pretty extensive. They offer Japanese and Vietnamese fare. But it's not your traditional Vietnamese food like pho and rice plates, it was more fusion.
When I first came here with some friends (6 total), we were able to order a little bit of everything and everything was very tasty. I can't remember the Vietnamese dishes' names again since it was not your typical pho. I do remember them all being good. I recall the sashimi being fresh and cold and the rolls being yummy.
The second time I came here, I order a Vietnamese chicken combo box and out came a big box full of different tasty treats. It looked twice the size of other places' combo boxes. The chicken was very moist and the jasmine rice was perfect.
A few other reviewers said that it was expensive, I think the prices are reasonable for the location (Ghirardelli/Wharf), freshness in the fish, variety of choices, friendly wait staff and satisfaction in favor. When I'm in the area, I'm definitely coming back. -

Pretty good Japanese food but on the pricey side. The rolls were inventive but not very big so they're great for small bite eaters. I really enjoyed the salad (on the appetizer menu). The miso-sesame dressing was YUM. Also, the place is unpretentious--ie, the sushi chefs were watching American Idol on the elevated TV, which happened to be great for table conversation.
btw, I used a http://restaurant.com coupon and saved $25. -

San Francisco, CA
Nice and comfy/non trendy restaurant that focuses on the quality and freshness of their sushi.
I've been to Grandeho's several times and have always enjoyed myself here... only thing is the rolls are somewhat small and I have a HUGE appetite so I had to order several items to calm the beast (my stomach). -

San Francisco, CA
I'm a vegetarian, so I can't comment on the fishy rolls, but the veggie rolls I've had here have been excellent. I also love the Yaki Udon! All of the food here is fresh and high quality. Their mixed greens salad is chock full of interesting things like broccoli, cauliflower, and asparagus in addition to the normal ingredients - none of the usual iceberg lettuce nonsense.
The service here has always been excellent. We haven't noticed any of the slowness that some reviewers have mentioned. It does seem a little more expensive than the other sushi places that I go to, but the quality is always top notch. The chihuahua photos are just adorable. -

I went here with my friend who was visiting from Australia after we got off the cable car. We walked around saw every place in the area/Fisherman's Wharf were selling tourist food. Although my friend is a tourist fried clams, crab legs, chowder, and fish and chips didn't appeal. Especially after getting some fresh and tasty Thai food in the city earlier, the expectations were set for healthy and tasty.
I was so inundated with tourist food in the area a Japanese/Vietnamese restaurant started making a lot of sense. I walked in there thinking pho will be a 'backup'. I ordered a sushi combination plate with some pretty fresh fish. My friend got the lemongrass chicken which was pretty tasty.
Have to speculate and say they may have correctly racially profiled my Aussie friend (who is white). They didn't bring out steamed rice with her lemongrass chicken and asked her if she wanted rice. Friend said no. If I go into a Vietnamese place anywhere and order lemongrass chicken they serve it with rice.
The location makes the prices kind of inflated. The area has a lot of places where a hamburger and fries costs $15. -
Review from Beatrice T.
Los Angeles, CA
The staff was friendly and the place wasn't horrible but for a $11 bowl of pho and $12.50 for plain eggplant.. I expected much more.
We were there for a large group and found the place to be pretty accommodating and cozy.. a more mom and pop type feel. Was rather surprised by the prices but hey.. it's fisherman's wharf.
The meal started off nicely with complimentary deep fried spring rolls from the chef. But the entrees came out unstrategically afterwards.. One person in our group received his pho 10-15 minutes before anyone else received their dish.. the last person to receive food ordered a papaya salad so that made very little sense. The guy across from me didn't get what he wanted so his new dish was on the house.
Our pho was pretty good, but was served warm and had to be sent back to be reheated. The eggplant was sauteed in a great sauce but could have been cooked a bit longer for a more tender bite. The crab and shrimp fried rice was clearly fried in a dirty wok with burnt flakes overpowering all the flavor. That was left untouched and should never have been given to us.
All the dishes had potential, just poor follow-through. If you dont' see steam, it's not hot. And if there are black specs throughout the dish... please don't serve it. Hate to give bad reviews to places with sweet service, but a girl's gotta eat.. and to eat good food. -

4 stars for food, +1 star b/c of their good looking nephew.... what a ladies man he is.
i was invited to eat all the tuna i wanted and meet husband #2's familia!!!!!!!!!!! so, of course i went!!!
the sushi was decent quality, and i tried uni (urchin) for the first time here... not my cup o tea. i don't know if i'll try it ever again. orange sea blob is what it should be called.
i also had the pleasure of eating some toro (fatty tuna) too... yum
and after i was about to explode red tuna sashimi, i had some dessert....
p.s. i wish i knew what Grandeho's Kamekyo meant. and i also didn't know there was a number 1. -

San Francisco, CA
I was really pleasantly surprised by this place. I was a reluctant recruit to a fusion restaurant, but I wanted to eat close to the party I was headed to.
At first I looked at the prices and thought "wow, double the price of pho in the sunset", and was even more surprised that my bf ordered a combo plate (tacky).
But, I was taken aback with the portion size and the amazing taste of the vietnamese bbq that the combo plate had. The vege pho I got had a great mix of vegetables and a lot of noodles (i had been expecting more broth, but at least this was more filling). I'd definitely make this a destination next time I'm headed to fisherman's wharf. -

I will concur with much of the review where if you're a regular, the chef throws in freebies. The service isn't bad if you're a newcomer, but compared to the pampering you get as a regular, it sure feels like it.
The sushi is fresh and there are a lot of interesting rolls. It is a bit on the pricey side. I went with a group of 12 people (half regulars) and even with the freebies, we still spent nearly $500. -
Review from Kim D.
My friends and I came her for dinner before our NYE event at Ana Mandara. It was a close walk and the place was very welcoming. We got a few rolls and agedashi tofu. Bonus that the restaurant gave us some complimentary noodles (very good) and fruit/orange desser (cute). The tofu was good and the rolls were pretty basic. My friends got the spider roll which was huge and they didn't know how to attack it. Generally speaking the food and service was ok. Nothing spectacular and unfortunately, the fish wasn't too fresh I think since I did break out in hives a little...no biggie happens sometimes but it was ok. For being on a budget and wanting a decent meal near our venue it was good and did its job.

Great sushi @ the wharf! Let Yoshi-san just go off and create some truly magical sushi sensations fo yo ass! Grubbin!
Seriously, This is some of the best Japanese food I've had in The City. Grace and all the staff have always gone out of their way to be AWESOME. Yoshi serves up works of art. And! they turned me on to Nigori saki... 'nuff said.
Edit: reduced to 4 stars because of Osamu. But I still love this place when I'm in The City. -

I don't like giving it a 3 but I can't quite give it a 4. The place was so welcoming, helpful and friendly, I had the Chicken Pho, it was HUGE, but lacked some of the flavor I was used to with some of the "whole in the wall places". I would try it again especially since they serve sushi as well! The service was GREAT, the food was A-OK...

Okay. I work in the neighborhood and thought I would give this restaurant a try.
After all, if it is a good restaurant, I would like to let my colleagues and friends know. My colleague and I decided to try this restaurant and I thought that the Zagat rating was a motivation.
The service was good, the waitress was very attentive and recommended some dishes including a special tea which we enjoyed. The prices are a bit overpriced for what was on the menu.
Overall, I thought the udons we ordered were delicious and the portions huge. I couldn't finish my order and took the rest home. -

I have to agree with Suzanne - having been a regular at both locations of G-K for about 4-5 years now... I was wondering if it's fair to even review... but you know what? when you love a place... you just love it!
The service is fantastic - Leslie (dinner service at the Cole location) is fantastic. She knows my order by heart - down to the "no shiso, please" every time. We always bring new friends to enjoy the fantastic Hamachi and the creative rolls and everyone loves it.
If you're in the 'hood, stop by and try Grandeho's - you won't regret it -

pricey, but ok food. The thing i didn't like was the wait. Then I don't like the price. We had about 5 rolls and it was almost 60 dollars. In SF where customers are fickle and most of us don't have extra cash to throw around and millions of competition, they need to bring their game, which they did not.
I was extremely disappointed. I thought their best sushi was the one w/ bananas in them. That showed a bit of creativity, but it still didn't meet my standards. -

I went back, I had the Pho, and I'm happier than ever. If you're looking for a cheap meal, a bowl of Pho is hard to beat. And if you want to spend some money, have a seat at the sushi bar. Just like the sushi, pho choices are limited. But what they had was exactly what I was looking for.

My absolutely favourite all round sushi house. Grace, our hostess, always assures a pleasant meal and the atmosphere can't be beat. The sushi grade is up there with the best but what makes this place good is its consistency across the board. From the slightly expensive japanese toro to the creative omakase offerings from the friendly chefs, it's hard to find a fault.
Truth be told, I'm a bit of a sushi bigot and I used to avoid "california rolls" and all its ilk for being non traditional. I still think it's not traditional but Kamekyo's offering tastes too good to ignore. Still worth the regular trek downtown for my sushi fix. -

My friend and I pored over the menu a good 3 or so minutes. I myself am a picture menu type of person. It helps me decide and order. I kept pointing at pictures -but they weren't on the menu. That's a cruel joke for a visual learner, eh?
The waitress had to give us another two minutes.
We ordered a sashimi lunch, and two specialty rolls and started talking about life, and what we were supposed to do with our lives, what the real purpose of living in the bay area is...and we stopped midsmidsentence! Woah! Our order arrived in a minute and a half. I know that sushi and sashimi isn't cooked, but that was really, really fast! Now THAT is service!
The tea was excellent. (roasted barley or toasted rice w/ green tea) and so was the promptness in service. Just as the thought barely formed that we would need her, our waitress would appear out of nowhere! Good mind-reading skills, that waitress!
The sashimi was very fresh and sweet. The miso was just right. The sushi rolls were just right, with fresh ingredients popping out at the cut ends! YUM!
I want to give them 4.5 stars. 5 stars if they started clearing everything only AFTER we left. Now that I think about it, it IS nice to put money down on a clean surface. Oh, and our waitress came back with our change within seconds!
Very impressed. Very impressed with her timing...
