Great hotel!  I believe the hotel is about 100 years old.  So the architecture fits the name of the hotel!  I'm an old-fashioned kind of gal, so I appreciated the crown molding, wainscoting and all that good stuff!

We booked the standard city view room.  I was impressed by the size of the room!  It had a nice sitting area and a big walk-in closet!  The rooms are updated with a cottage by the sea decor!  The hotel is within steps to the beach and the shops.  Even though we were on the 4th floor, we could still hear a lot of noise and late-night music from the street.  Next time, I'd shell out the extra $50 for a ocean view room.

Most importantly, I was really impressed with the door captain, Benny!  He's spectacular!  Made us feel welcome and at home right as we pulled up to the hotel.  All weekend as we were coming and going, he'd remember us and have our car brought up in no time!  The hotel charges a day rate for valet parking.  But with service like Benny's, I felt like a celebrity!

This place is awesome! My employer booked this hotel for us for a meeting a few weeks back, they know wassup

The decor is very nice and old schoolish, kinda like a victorian home with all the modern ammenities. I was going to give it 4 stars because when we arrived to the room they had just changed the window dressings and the curtain rods were sittin on the bed in our room.

I called the front desk and within minutes they sent someone from maintenance up. This cool older Filipino guy took care of it in a jiffy. I asked him to give me a good "inexpensive" restaurant recommendation since he's local. He walked us all the way down stairs and outside and gave us directions to all the good burger joints and Asian places.

Thanks!!!

Fantastic hotel, very nice decor and they are very helpful here, the pool is nice and the hotel is right in town which is nice especially because they have good stores, resteraunts and galleries here. The beds are super soft and they have a walk in closet and Ipod dock. When you arrive they bring your luggege and you to your room in a golf cart.

Very disappointed...
Pros:
- Nice room, walk in closet and flat screen TV
- Nice pool ( a bit cold though, even if they mention "heated", customers -including us- complained about the temperature of the water...)
- Great location, can't beat it
-Nice staff

Cons:
-Small bathroom, tiny bathtub and one small soap for a family of 3 people during 4 days (???!!!)
- Breakfast "included in Bed and Breakfast package... Well, actually you are restricted as it is not a buffet (can't have 2 beverages like an orange juice and coffee or a simple yogurt and toast).
- No coffee/tea maker in the room, as well as no fridge. You have to call them and ask for one. We asked for a kettle to make some tea or coffee but they just brought 2 coffees...
- we have been charged what they call a "package tax" which was absolutely not mentioned when we booked. (aournd $25-30 per night)
They do a promotion so that you think you have a deal, but in the end you don't.
We were really not happy with that last minute tax...

I love the architecture of this hotel.  The patio area is a really nice place to throw a birthday party on a sunny weekend day.  There is valet service for your guests, and the catering is really good.  We brought our own cake and whatever was leftover they boxed up for us.  It's walking distance to the beach too.  The staff was friendly...everyone had a great time...Happy memories...

Yeah baby!  This hotel is fantastic.  For $205/night, my girlfriends stayed in a beautiful room with down pillows and comforters and SUPER SOFT beds!  They also had a huge plasma TV, an iPOD dock/stereo, free wireless internet, a walk-in closet and free breakfast in bed every day!!!  When we were running late for a wedding at the cove, the valet drove us there in a little golf cart for free!   This place made me feel like a little spoiled princess and I will definitely stay here again!

Can't say enough about this hotel. Friendly and attentive staff, affordable rates, beautiful grounds, and a fantastic room. When we visit, we stay in a junior suite with full ocean view - highly recommended. After much research, the hotel's website offers the best off-season deals. The Bed & Breakfast package is a steal, offering a delicious breakfast at their award-winning restaurant Nine Ten, in addition to significantly discounted prices on rooms. All in all, this hotel is great find.

Sometimes a girl's gotta get away.  I spent a weekend here with two girlfriends and took advantage of their Surf Package.  I was not disappointed!  The hotel is nice, clean, has an adjoining restaurant and bar that's open fairly late.  Fluffy, comfy beds, pretty big bathroom that was good for sharing with 3 people.  I did not hear bumps in the night, although people do party out on the street and you can hear it from rooms facing the street.  But this didn't bother me a bit.  Our room was on the second floor with a beautiful ocean view and if you opened up the windows you got a lovely breeze that added all the more to the beachy atmosphere.  The pool was small but it served it's purpose.  Would have been nice if the bar served drinks out there though.  The breakfast included in the package was hearty and delicious.  The hotel is centrally located, so you're pretty much within walking distance of anything you'd want to do while in La Jolla.  There's many restaurant options and you're near the beach.
We walked to the Surf Diva shop to prep for our two hour lesson.  As someone who is pretty much scared to death of ocean sports for fear of sea creatures and riptides, I was hesitant to try surfing for the first time.  But I think this was the best possible location to learn.  The waves were warm and manageable, the instructor was a cool chick who knew how to teach a beginner with the utmost patience and encouragement.  And I was able to stand on my first try out in the water!  My girls and I were giddy afterwards.  I never thought I'd enjoy it as much as I did!
I highly recommend this hotel for a stay on it's own, but if you're looking for a fun weekend with your girlfriends, you must do the surf package!  And it was all very affordable, which can be hard to find in the summer.
