Review from Darwin G.
The first most enticing thing you'll notice walking in is their pizza. Even though they may not be a pizza place, they just do something I want. Square pizza, thin crust, amazing toppings. They have cauliflower, straight tomato, potato (should've gotten this), mushroom, and more. I think they might be able to heat up your slices.
I personally want my food, especially pizza, scalding hot. My cold slice of mushroom slice ($3.00) was incredible. Nice amount of salt, well cooked mushrooms, thin easy crust. I can't fathom what it would taste like if it was hot. Next time, I'll surely explore their other pizzas.
Finally, you must get their pizza Bianca (focaccia with olive oil and rosemary), which gets you a huge slice for $1.75. Great for just a snack or to make sandwiches with at home.
Bring on my favorite food, bring on the bread. -

How is it that I haven't talked about this place after being faithful for 5 years?!
If you have bakeries in your blood like I do, you'll love this place. Simple decor, but delicious breads, and even more delicious pizzas and sandwiches at lunch: bresaola paninis and cauliflower pizzas - mmmmmm color me happy! Granted, expect NY prices at NY portions. It takes 2 slices and a roll of some kind before I can consider that I had some semblance of a lunch. All the more reason for that 3pm snack! (Personally as important as the afternoon nap) -

I don't understand how this place has such high ratings? It has left me wondering whether the reviewers who say "it transports me straight back to Italy" have ever actually been to Italy?
I tried the cauliflower with breadcrumbs pizza. The first thing I noticed is the size: it is TINY. I have wallets sized bigger than that thing. Now I'm a small girl, but I would need at least four slices to make a decent sized lunch.
The "pizza", if you can call it that, was so crisp and baked it was like eating a biscuit. Pizza in Italy comes out hot and thin, and still soft enough to be a little floppy. Grandaisy is the exact opposite. If they are not trying to compete with Italian pizza, then fine, but I wish other reviewers would stop making comparisons and call it what it is: a biscuit with mediocre topping. -

I do like this place, but the prices are really high and the portions really small.

I've never stepped foot in here, but my excellent husband frequently spoils me with a breakfast from Grandaisy.
We're in love with the bresaola panini, the pizza bianca con pecorino (takes us right back to the Italian coast) and the croissants aren't bad, either. Quality stuff. Makes for great meals.
I am also a huge fan of the iced coffee, actually. It hits the mark. -

Still love their vegan sandwich (and friends love all the other varieties), but a friend & I had a "can you believe how good that was" moment after devouring the seasonal artichoke pizza. Have to get there earlier during the lunch hour as it is usually gone by the time we arrive.
Pizza bianca with fresh artichokes & garlic... heaven with carbs:)
other favorites Ginger Cookie with lemon filling, Ginger cookies (packaged on the side wall), chocolate brownies, and Carta bread packages (think saltine crackers made with olive oil... my Mother In Law is addicted & we ship them to her in NC)1 Previous Review: Show all »

I'll keep it short, I'll keep it sweet -- I'm busy, you're busy (and possibly hungry)..
Amazing sandwiches. I love the Panino Greco, especially.
I frequent the Sullivan Street location and almost every time splurge on a dessert of some variety (in some peculiar need to try them all). That said, the Lemon-Coconut Tart blows my mind. Too great for words, but obviously I still attempt to convey its greatness with such!
And the bread! How did I wait so long to mention their bread? It's great. Too many options to mention (and I've tried a handful), all of which appear to be pretty much fantastic. A fine cohort to a homemade soup, if you ask me!
Thus concludes my review. May it serve you well. -

It's still a great place for bread and bakery items but quality is going down.
Pugliese is compact, flat inside, far less holes than in the past, probably because of a less accurate leavening process.
The "Sette Grani" is wet inside all the times: I'm not buying it anymore.
Pizza bianca is really chewy, like made the day before.
Bottom line: still OK, but there are better alternatives. -

Fantastic bread and other sweeter goodies! You can't go wrong with the olive rolls, the cranberry-nut rolls, or the flourless chocolate cake.

If you're craving carbs for lunch (as I generally am), Grandaisy is a delicious cheap stop in the Soho area.
The pizza here is generally thinner than what you're familiar with. I like the cauliflower and the mushroom, but also give their specialty pizzas a try if you're there.
Since a slice of pizza may not fill you up as a midday meal, make sure that you grab one of their yummy pastries for dessert. The lumaca ("snail pastry") is one of my personal favorites.
Also, it may be worth following their twitter account since they sometimes offer special one-day discounts/offers.Listed in: It's Time for Lunch

Best european style bakery in manhattan
Positives:
* Best pastries, better than amy's bread, balthazar, and every other place i've tried in manhattan
* favorites are bread pudding by far, and neapolitan cheesecake. Pastries are not too sweet, soft and moist, perfect flavor. Never had a disappointing item, it's all very good.
The place is pretty pricey ($4 to $5) per item though.
The upper west side location is just as good.
Wife has given this place a rare seal of approval, given only to about five places in new york. She expects the best from new york and wont settle for less. -

Snaps. Finally a review with 5 stars.
[cauliflower pizza]
The style pizza in grandaisy is thin, and doesn't necessarily have marinara sauce. The bread held well against the ingredients and was really good.
[hazelnut pastry]
Oh, so delicious. I think it was probably because of the amount of oil. But it was good
[pizza bianca]
Huh? It's bread with some sea salt. Really guys? I didn't think it was that good.
Overall, cheap + good food = 5 stars. -

This place had my heart from the first minute I found out about them!
I volunteer for God's Love We Deliver and they always have nummy baked goods and stellar pizza for us to enjoy after our shift. I was so consistently impressed that I asked our contact one evening where this heavenly spread comes from every week. Turns out Grandaisy donates it! Super karmic bonus points, peops!
And their products are SOOO good! Their super thin crust pizzas taste brick oven baked (I have yet to be inside of Grandaisy so am not sure of the set up). The cauliflower is one of my faves. But the potato is NOT to be missed!
I've been doing so well on my diet that I splurged last night after volunteering. I had half of a raspberry tart and almost slapped the wall! It was that good! Since I was hooked and had to see if they put crack in every baked good, I - of course! - had a duty to try half of their pistachio cheesy eggy creamy dense ambrosiac tart. Yup. Equally crack laden. Though I do believe there was a hint of hash in this one since I think I forgot to chew due to how phenomenal it was. And - of course! - I had to wash all of that down with a sliver of banana nut bread (which is SOOOO darned clse to my grandfather's - God receive his soul - that I almost cried).
Lastly, I packed my bag up with the AMAZING artisan rolls & breads they also donate to GLWD. I'll be having one roll every morning this week for breakfast.
It's obviously from the quality of their product and the generosity of their souls that these are top notch people running a business that you should support as often as possible. Get the word out, y'all! -

Oh. YES.
We happened upon this place by accident and thank goodness we did. If you are a bread fiend (as we are) you will love it here.
I would forgo the sweet treats such as the banana bread and carrot cake and focus on the delicious flat breaks and loafs. Bread with rosemary and olive oil can go a long way... a very very long way. Needless to say we ended up spending more time in this place then we anticipated (we had just come from brunch) but just couldn't resist the deliciousness of it all! So, 2 treats and 4 flatbread slices later (which only set us back a measly 10 dollars) we went home stuffed and satisfied.
My only complaint is that my home base is nowhere near this little piece of heaven. -

Overhead and overseen in the Grandaisy entrance:
Blonde Girl, Aged Mid-twenties: "Omg, we have to go in. This place is super caa-youte, you'll love. Mike says it's the best bread evar."
Her Mother (Presumed), Aged Much Older: "If you touch another piece of bread today let alone walk into that bakery, you're not going to fit into your wedding dress AND I really don't feel like witnessing another binge and purge before the weekend."
Blonde Girl pouts, looks inside longingly at the various wheat and baked goods like a puppy begging by the dinner table and then starts playing on her iPhone, trailing behind her mother as if reduced to 12 yrs old.
Oh, New York City dolls...
I, however, did go inside and I bought some onion foccaccia and brought it to share with my coworkers. A sort of last supper before I moved. It was delicious, Blonde Girl, wherever you are. -

I almost always come here for the Pizza Bianca only.
With rosemary and just the right amount of salt, although I will add more olive oil. I can eat this alone as a meal.
The other pizzas are also very tasty, though seems a little pricey for small slices. Recently, the young lady from the bakery recommended the green olive roll - yummy also. It's all good. -

"Pizza Cavolfiore" is to die for. It's Caulifolowers and Gryuere cheese on top a thin-crispy pizza. Mmmmmm....
"bianca" looks very simple, but it's very flavorful. Soft inside, crispy outside. It's very delicious ;)
It's cheap and delicious. Amazing. -

I am a simple man who does not claim to know a lot.
But of the few, few things I do know, one of them is that the Grandaisy Bakery Lumaca ("snail" in Italian) pastries are the bomb-diggity (yes, the bomb-diggity is a scientific definition). Flaky, buttery, with a raisin here and there tossed in for good measure...
Man, they're all sorts of tasty.
This is all the knowledge I wish to impart to you currently - hey! Don't give me that sass! That's all I got, honest! Be grateful! This one little nugget is a keeper.

Grandaisy Bakery gets a few visits out of me every now and then just so I can indulge in a pizza or baked good. Carbs are bad, I know.
Yes, in my battle of the bulge Grandaisy is a formidable foe but oh what a delicious, comforting foe it is! Their breads, flat bread pizzas and desserts are topnotch and hold an intoxicating spell over me. In short, I could never give up bread or carbs when such a place exists. Their pizza bianca is a crackly airy wonder of flour, decorated simply with sea salt, rosemary and olive olive. Perfect for munching but dangerously so as it's only $1.50 and huge! The flat bread style pizzas are chewy crisp with satisfying, simple ingredients like zucchini or cauliflower with gruyere. In the sweets departments, their cakes are dense and have perfect crumb. They also bake up a mighty fine fruit tart that involves buttery rich flaky pastry surrounding a mound of juicy, ripe seasonal fruit.
All told, Grandaisy Bakery bakes up some excellent stuff. It's just deadly for those of us trying to hold off the carbs.1 Previous Review: Show all »

I don't know if its very healthy to eat this much delicious bread for such a low price... but I guess we can't be healthy all the time.
Who am I kidding? Yelp has made sure that I stay as unhealthy as possible.
The place is a bit confusing though, with only some of the food items being labeled and only some with price-tags. I never did see what their $1 pizzas are...

The pizza bianca is so freaking delicious. Rosemary, moist with olive oil, salty, flaky, chewy - yummmmmmy.
I also love the little square pizza slices - I know they're a smidge greasy but they're still so tasty. I like the fungi and the zucchini best.
Moving on, the paninis are awesome. They are nice and simple with great ingredients. The bresaola with arugula and parmesan is my favorite.
Next time you're in the area, run, don't walk to Grandaisy and get a little bit of everything. I've never been disappointed in anything I've gotten there. -

Disappointment for me. I tried three things: potato pizza, cauliflower pizza, and one of their cakes (they just called it the Grandaisy cake?). Potato pizza grossed me out. Didn't even like the smell of it. Too greasy and not a fan of the potato flavor. I could see eating it with soup or combining some other flavors with it but I didn't like it by itself.
Cauliflower was alrite. Pure cauliflower flavor. Same thing about the grease and combining with other flavors.
The cake was way too sweet for me. I could smell the sugar. No thank you.Listed in: Screw Veggies and Fruit!

The idea of eating a slice of "pizza" with potatoes on it seems so wrong, but THIS IS SO RIGHT!!!!
The crust is a heavenly cross between delicate pizza crust and light foccacia. It is covered with paper thin slices of potatoes, olive oil, rosemary, and sea salt and baked until golden brown and crispy. Wipe drool now.
The "plain" is really great: just olive oil, rosemary and sea salt, but so tasty. Nothing plain about it.
Don't be fooled by the term "pizza": this isn't a saucy triangular slice of Ray's slop. It is a large beautiful rectangle of thin, crispy, spectacularness. Just like in Rome. -

Whenever I'm back in NY, I head to Grandaisy. Who else makes pizza like this? Sweet Lord of all that's good and doughy and crispy. The zucchini pizza slices with the breadcrumbs are heavenly and light and crunchy. I could wax rhapsodic about everything, because it is all good. I always leave with ciabatta for the train ride home (once eaten with Rick's Pics Mean Beans, yum) and the next day to savor. That's how I found about Grandaisy; I had dinner at Salt who serves Grandaisy's ciabatta. Some of Salt's cauliflower soup with truffle infusion and ciabatta will chase away the cold.
I have also been to Grandaisy's place on 72nd (?), where I had the refreshing pleasure of meeting the owner. She was a delight, lovingly sharing samples and small talk to the people stopping in. I purchased a variety of pizzas and sandwiches for some foodie friends who saw the light after the first bite.
Next time: Pizza Bianco (can you believe I haven't had it yet?).

Mmm bread. This is where I get all my bread, even if I didn't realize it at first. My local grocer receives fresh loaves of their pane pugliese daily, which I buy religiously. About 30 bottles of olive oil later, I finally noticed the little tab beneath the bread crediting the bakery. Since then I've been to Sullivan St. a few times, mostly to sample their other breads though I still hold the pugliese closest to my heart (I am almost ashamed to admit it, but I have not tried any of their pizzas).
They have very little in the way of sweets, so I'm a bit reluctant to add it to my Patisserie list, but what they do have is very good-- in particular I like the pear butter tart and the cheese danish (though in a cheese danish battle I think Ceci Cela would win). -

This lovely bakery is literally just around the corner from my apt, and I am a big fan. I get a slice of pizza bianco (basically it is rosemary foccacia) and it is a generous slice and it costs....$1. What? Literally, I can split it between myself and someone else, and along with sauteed greens, or salad, or some good cheese, that's dinner. $1? If you need more, buy 2, or 3, or 4, and you still haven't spent over 5 bucks. If anyone out there has a cast iron pan, this particular type heats up amazingly on that type of pan. Also, it holds up very well if you were to sautee, say, some kale or swiss chard and top the foccacia (ooops..."pizza") with it. You can pretty much do anything with it and it's great. The other pizzas are good, as well; the cauliflower happens to be my favorite.
The place is great, and anywhere that serves peach nectar is okay in my book (harkback to my youth).
And by the way, for anyone that was wondering (seems to be a few), it is now called Grandaisy because Sullivan St Bakery was owned by a husband and wife. They got divorced, and he retained custody of the title "Sullivan St Bakery". The wife, apparently, got to stay in that space on sullivan, but could not use the name. She renamed it Grandaisy, while the new location of the actual Sullivan St Bakery is on 47th st. Just letting all know... -

On a windy day I could glide from my window around the corner to grandaisy. At first I didn't understand the fuss. Then, I found heaven in 3 places:
Pizza Bianca
Zucchini Pizza
Pain au Chocolat
Here's the deal with all 3 of them. They need to be heated before eating. For the first two, I ask them to heat them for me and eat them there. The pain au chocolat I heat in the toaster oven at work. It's incredible. The goods can be a little pricey, but the oral pleasure is beyond comparison. -

CHEAP & DELICIOUS.
I bought two groupons for this place for about 1/2 off and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of all their food. Pizzas and baked goods were both delish and I don't even know what to suggest because I liked everything I bought which is about 75% of all their inventory. I'm actually embarrassed to admit that I've finished $15 worth of food in less than 2 days. And that's happened twice already.

Great great. The pizzas are terrific. They're thin and room temperature. They've got shavings of fennel and complex hard cheeses.
The whole wheat boules were a staple of my diet, cut up for Italian sandwiches, or decadent if healthy French toast.
Grandaisy, or perhaps its former sister Sullivan Street Bakery provide bread for a lot of the restaurants in the neighborhood, and throughout the city. You can tell when you get their bread. It's got a real thick crust. It's got a slight coffee flavor, but with a delicate fluffy white inside.
It's great. Eat it. -

The first time I went here, I got the pizza zucchini and was not impressed. It was good but not fresh and the man hadn't warmed it to be hot enough. I like my pizza nearly scalding hot. I decided to go back there again for the pizza bianca which is a great deal at $1.50. It's huge so I just had that for lunch. It was oh so tasty and definitely beats out the pizza zucchini. I'll go there again to try the pizza pomodoro but I know I can always rely on trusty Bianca if I need a cheap meal.
I also tried my friend's bresaola panini which was amazing but too pricey for me at $7.00. It's great quality but the portion was too small and left her hungry. Only get that if you're one of those light eaters with a lot of cash! -

I'm so spoiled b/c I work a block away from this bakery. It's a perfect place for breakfast, lunch, and coffee. For lunch, I had the bresaola panini and though it looked petite in size, it was still delicious and filling! In fact I like the petite size b/c it's easier for me to eat/handle :-) I had their brioche for breakfast and it was pretty good, though I would have liked a filling inside. They carry Illy coffee which is a major plus.
They were giving pumpkin pie samples and it was soo delicious! I need to go back and buy a pumpkin pie. It was one of the best pumpkin pies I've ever had!
I have yet to try the pizza-ish pizzas! It's too bad there's no recession special anymore b/c the prices are $3+ as opposed to $1.50. I was so tempted to try it before but now after reading the Yelp reviews, I must!!Listed in: Sweet stuff!!

Whoever suggested the potato pizza (and I think there were many), you guys rock. It's like having thinly-sliced, perfectly-salted, somewhat greasy potato chips atop foccacia. Yum. I also tried the funghi pizza, which is overloaded with mushrooms. It's funny to note that while it doesn't have enough salt, one can actually see the salt crystals atop the mushrooms. Not sure what's wrong there...
All in all, a cute little bakery. I just wish they'd find themselves an oven so I could have warm pizza...
