Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument
2 reviews for Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument
The newest of the National Parks, operated jointly with the Bureau of Land Management, and thankfully, the surrounding region hasn't seemed to wise up to commercializing just yet. *Huge.* Each of the four visitor centers has a different focus: Escalante (ecology, biology); Kanab (geology, archaeology); Cannonville (the cultural landscape); and Big Water (paleontology). Many scenic dirt roads, but the area runs a risk of flash floods so you should always check weather conditions with the visitor center.
If you can only do one hike: the Lower Calf Creek Trail is an easy but long 6-mile non-loop hike that wends its way into a red-rocked canyon, through reedy grasses and sand, and around about when you're losing patience with the whole damn thing already, finishes off at a waterfall and a very cold, spring-fed pool for swimming, wading, and posing for the photographic payout. Keep your eyes open for the river trout once the trail moves closer to the creek (around marker 11 of 15).
Also, a thank you into the Internet void to the Good Samaritan who came upon my car keys that I left in the bathroom, didn't drive off with my very nice rental car nor take anything from it ... and simply left the keys in my car door. This park brings in good people. Please let that continue to be the case.

Take one of the old roads north from Big Water/Lake Powell. Got a flat tire on my truck but it was really cool.
